Food Was FABULOUS! First time visitor. It appears this is much more a take-out and catering restaurant than sit down and have table service. Waitress was responsive to our needs but didn't think of them. For example, delivered hot tea without milk and sugar or even asking it if we needed it. Delivered chicken wings without extra napkins. We had multiple sharing items and we had to ask for extra plates. Things that you expect just weren't there. However, the FOOD WAS FABULOUS! The place was immaculately clean and tidy. First off this place really deserves higher ratings, let me explain... My family was craving a traditional home cooked meal, and we are currently on a Caribbean style food kick. We decided on Morgan's after a business conference up in Newark. The place only had a couple of people when we arrived, and we were quickly serviced and had our meal ordered. There were several (~5-7) take orders that came in, some may have been preordered and others were definitely ordered on site. Each one of these orders was given priority and took quite some time to get out the door. We ended up waiting over an hour to get our food! Even another couple that was dining in, decided after their 45 minute wait that they would take it to go. They weren't too happy. Service overall was pleasant, and the food was absolutely delicious!! Oxtail, curry goat and jerk chicken all hit the spot, spicy and flavorful. Really lost 2 stars due to the unacceptable wait time. I'd consider going back, if the kitchen turnover improves. read more

I really wanted to like this place. I wanted to like it so much that I drove 40 minutes out of my way home from Philly to stop by. I entered excited. I left underwhelmed. I ordered curry goat, oxtail, and jerk chicken. Positives: -Good portion size -beef patties are good -the ox tail is savory with good sauce, large portions Negative: -Jerk chicken flavor was overwhelming with the taste of barbeque sauce, did not mesh well with the rice and cabbage - Curry goat was bland -Hot sauce was not hot at all; very overwhelming BBQ flavor as well - I paid $61 for my food items and was given one small container of hot sauce, when asking for more (for my 3 plates of food) I was told I had to pay more Wouldn't come here again. read more

We visited Old Heights Brewery, which was also great, and were looking for a place to have dinner when we came upon Morgan's Island Grill. Everyone that worked there was super pleasant and obviously was happy to be there which is not easy to find these days. The food was really spicy and incredibly flavorful. Loved the plantains! The owner/chef came out to the dining room to visit with all the patrons and stopped at our table. What a nice man. I love this place!! Plastic forks and plates, so know what you're getting but the food and people are worth it. read more

As a Hightstown native... I am hoping for the best for Morgan's Island Grill. I have seen businesses open and close, open and close over and over again since I was old enough to care. I have loved a few of those businesses and not cared for others but I am routing for Morgan and his wonderful little restaurant. Major pluses -BYOB -small family run business -best Jamaican food I have tasted -sides were delicious -Extremely reasonable prices -large portions I ordered the ox tail and tilapia combo which included a side corn bread (soooooo gooooood), plaintains and rice and cabbage. I enjoyed every bite. Ox tail, btw, is just a certain kind of beef. The tilapia was breaded and in a sweet sauce. We were served a small soup to start which reminded me of home. We ordered the mac and cheese as a side. It was just ok...but he sent us all home with a piece of corn bread and mac and cheese. He said it was a new recipe and wow...that side of mac and cheese was delicious! I ate every bite. I hope he keeps the new recipe. Best part of the whole experience was Morgan the owner. He took our order, chatted us up when possible and made us a delicious meal. As business picked up his wife took over. He made us feel like we were over his house for dinner and that is an experience you have once in a blue moon. Be aware that everything is made to order, so it will take some time for your meal to be prepared. Additionally, they had a lot of take out business coming in. I would have dated a three but service in the back was not good. Everyone working is Hispanic and that's ok given the area. Let me start off by saying, i tried the 4 meats and sides and I went back a few items because they are mixing the jerk spicy with sweetness and throws taste off. I asked if we could just swap out one items because the flavors off and the other meats we just kept. I'm assuming they felt I didn't speak Spanish but I clearly heard what the cook said when the young lady brought the food back to him to explain what was wrong. I told her to let them know all the sauces are mixed in and it throws taste and his reply was ridiculous but I'll take this up with the manager. Down to food, it's just ok. Rice and peas and plantains were really good. Mac and cheese and shrimp were ok. Didn't like the beef patty and the ribs and chicken and oxtails were probably better but with all the sauce mixing was just not good. Found this spot looking for some classic Jamaican beef patties, and it's not too far from my home. I'm so glad we tried it. We got a few patties to go for a road trip and decided to try some of their other options. We had a side of the sweet bananas, (platanos) they were perfect and fresh, just the right sweet. We had their island salad with jerk chicken. Surprisingly very very good and full of flavor! Very fresh and memorable. We also grabbed some of their fried chicken to try since it looked so appetizing. Wow so happy we did. It was juicy and mouth watering. As for the beef patties. I have tried them in many places (including Jamaica mon-:)) and we usually travel to Perth amboy for them, but we are SUPER happy with how good these were! I ordered the barbecue jerk chicken with sweet sauce. I also added delicious oxtails to the meal. Everything tasted like it was made fresh just for me. This is an Update to my last review. I had the Large Curry Goat plate yesterday 7/31/18. Its was one of the best curry goat plates that i have had! The flavors were there and there was alittle heat behind the flavor! I will be going back again tomorrow 8/2/18 to bring some back to Texas with me! I am still not a fan of the rice and peas and the cabbage was okay in favor. The meat could have been more tender for my taste but it depends on preference. All i all excellent dish. I was excited to try Morgan's Island Grill after reading all the rave reviews! I went through all the pictures before I went so I already knew what I wanted to order. My heart was set on ordering the BBQ jerk chicken (sweet) with Mac and cheese and a slice of coconut cake for dessert. The only problem is they had no coconut cake that day, and they ran out of Mac and cheese! I cant understand how this place with a limited menu can run out of Mac and cheese!?!? I was really disappointed! I ended up ordering the BBQ jerk chicken (sweet) size large which came with plantains, rice, cabbage, and cornbread. The BBQ jerk chicken (sweet) was FANTASTIC! They gave me a lot of tender meat in a delicious sweet bbq sauce. For $15 I definitely received my money's worth! The plantains it came with were to die for! The cabbage was really good too! The rice was ok/good, and the cornbread was decent. I had much better cornbread before. I also ordered the beef patty which was tasty! For dessert I ended up going with a chocolate cake which wasn't house made, but good! I definitely would come back here again for sure as I loved the bbq jerk chicken (sweet)! It was so good that I can't imagine ordering anything else! Maybe if they have a combo platter I'll try something else. I was going to wait to try the restaurant but Sunday after church I was craving curry chicken and beef patty. Hubby and I ordered jerk chicken and curry chicken, both came with rice and beans, plantains, cabbage, mixed vegetables and cornbread. They were out of beef patties, so I tried a chicken patty. Everything was good. Hubby likes spicy so the jerk was good for him, and the curry was just right for me. We will be going back again. My quest continues for that great Caribbean food. My first visit here at Morgan's wasn't a bad one. I went around 3:00 in the afternoon, so it was quiet and empty. The Restaurant appeared to be very clean; which is a great thing, the service was fast, efficient and cordial. I ordered the stewed chicken with cabbage, no plantains (as I usually do at most Caribbean restaurants). My food came so fast it surprised me. My favorite was the cabbage which I got so little of; the cabbage was more like a garnish than a part of the meal. The cornbread was a little too sweet for my pallet; as for the chicken, it was good, but not great, I found it to be a tad bit salty. I'm starting to think maybe I am a picky eater, but I like what I like.....So with that said my quest continues for that go to Caribbean Restaurant and I can't wait until I find it; until then stay tuned. read more

As per the usual with my reviews, this is my wife and my first time eating here. We walked in to a pretty busy restaurant, and for good reason. They've really earned all of their stars. I think our foo two dishes took approximately 10 or 15 minutes. The ambience is perfect for conversation while waiting though, outside at least (see pictures). I think with enough customers, inside might feel a little cramped, but it's well air conditioned. The wait is worth it. I ordered the medium jerk chicken, and my wife ordered the medium oxtail. Since I was new, I ordered it mild. A tip if you're not accustomed to eating Caribbean food: it's likely being a Medieval Times, but you're allowed to use utensils. They gave us plenty of napkins, so naturally, I dug right in. It was a wise decision to have it mild. I'm normally used to spice, but their food is well seasoned. Mild was just right for me, but I feel like I missed out on the real dish. I might try spicy next time. The oxtail is a little harder to share since there's a little less meat but the medium serving is plenty for one person. From what little my wife let me taste, it was also delicious. Definitely trying the mac and cheese next time. Also, the cornbread is so good, we got some to go. read more

Had the reg jerk chicken and it was moist and juicy with carribean explosion in your palate! Lunch menu is a few bucks less and has fries, veggies,and plantains. I live over an hour and a half from the area but always make it a point to come here at least once a year and then whenever we happen to be in the area. Today, my family and I were at a fall festival nearby. I called Morgan's and asked what time they close and I was told 6PM but that the last order would be 530PM. No problem. With this knowledge, we actually hurriedly left the festival an hour earlier than planned to make it out on time because we wanted to at least get take out from Morgan's. I called at 520PM and placed my order but when I tried to order seafood pasta or fish for my toddlers was told no because they "try not to make seafood dishes since they are about to close". I explained that it was for my toddlers who won't eat the jerk chicken or oxtail and also explained that I had called earlier and was not told about the menu restrictions, however their stance didn't change. As a business owner myself I understand that each establishment has their own rules/preferences but I just wish this restricted menu was explained to me as I would have opted not to leave the festival early instead of rushing to leave well in time to place an order and then being told these dishes for my kids are not available simply because it was 40 minutes from closing. read more

I have been going to Morgans since they've opened. The food and service is getting worse every time. Tonights was the worst and probably the last time for me. I called Morgan and spoke to him directly at 6:16 pm and ordered my usual large oxtail and roti goat. Arrived there at 7:00 pm. Paid for my order and I turned around saw a huge line behind me. I was like thank god I got here in time. WRONG!!! I waited over 30 mins and when I saw 5 people that was behind me got their order first. I asked the lady nicely why is my order taking so long. She said "well the people who call in ahead gets their food first." I was like umm I called in ahead. 45 mins before I got there. She then continues to tell me this lie that the people who got their order ahead of me even though they where behind me "called in their order before me" So all these people Called over an hour and they arrive after me. They get their meal first? Now she thinks Im dumb coz I know for a fact the lady that was behind me didn't order ahead. Honestly if she would've just apologized and said that it might've been a mistake or something then I could understand. But seriously?!?! I'm very patient person but don't treat me like I didn't just pay for $50 meal and have to deal with this. Never again!!!! I will not be coming back for sure. Secondly sorry Morgan you're food used to be the best but now it's just not how it used to be. Portions are not worth the price you charge and well you need to learn how to prep the food for togo orders. The sauce spilled all over the bag and it was a mess when I got home. It appears that Morgan has stepped back from the business somewhat. The last several months that I have placed orders I have noticed someone else answering the phone and cooking the food. The taste has not been consistent and unfortunately, I've been disappointed with my last few meals. We always make it a point to support local businesses, but my favorite dish, which is the Rasta pasta definitely was not worth the higher price point that it now is. Once you get within a block of this place, you can already smell that you're in for something good. When you walk in the front door, you are always warmly greeted by staff, very often by Chef Morgan himself. The restaurant is nicely apportioned, but unassuming; welcoming with not even a hint of pretentiousness. They let the food do the talking here, and it speaks volumes. The hot wings and jerk chicken are always top notch,and you'll never go wrong with either. This afternoon I opted for an old favorite, though: oxtails. Stewed in a wonderfully flavorful sauce and simmered for hours, they are tender and fall off the bone good. A small Styrofoam container was packed with the good stuff, as well as rice & cabbage, plantains and cornbread. At $13, a slightly indulgent lunch, but terrific value for what you're getting. Of course, no trip to Morgan's is complete without picking up a few patties for the road as well. I grab two, one for my wife and one for me as a late night snack. A few minutes in the toaster oven bring them right back to life after being refrigerated. Morgan's is a family run eatery done right. There's clearly love put into all of the recipes that come out of the kitchen. Phenomenal spice and flavors at this cozy spot in Hightstown. Seems to be a small family owned restaurant and the food is fresh and very tasty.
