I went a week ago and the most horrible customer service experience happened to me. I've been going there since I was a kid but what happened a week ago made me never want to go again. Me and my sister split our bill, so I was paying for half of the entire bill. I tipped 15% of my tab whereas my little sister (she's 13) didn't, I believe she forgot but I didn't notice until later. Anyways, the server picked up my receipt with the tip, laughed at me and pointed at the tip saying it was "too less". And then handed it to her coworker in front of me where the coworker said "no you have to tip 15%" and gave me back my split tab. And they proceeded to make me change my $5 to $10. I've always tipped coming here and it was just an awful and rude experience. If I knew my sister didn't tip, I would have gladly but the way they laughed and physically made me change it was awful. I know I should have spoken up for myself but I'm an incredibly anxious person and that should have never happened in the first place. Never going back again. Some of the best fusion rolls ever, but too many issues and more than once. Service is often slow to horrible. On two occasions came to p/u a To Go order to find it not ready even though I was slightly late on their estimated time. Making matters worse, on these two occasions people came into the restaurant after I was waiting, ordered and got served before my order was prepared. Mentioned this to the owner and he got upset with me. Family was very hungry and unhappy when I finally returned If the service issues were insufficient to turn me off, I got sick shortly after eating here on two occasions. Not going back. Unfortunately, I did not have the best experience. I ordered the ika teriyaki and there was sand all inside of the squid. There was a tomato served with it and it tasted like fish... But a bad kind of fish. The inside smelled horrible and it was hot inside. I wouldn't trust sushi from a hot environment. I haven't been here in years and it was far better back then. read more

Must Haves: Hamachi Kama - 5 stars. Order this as soon as you walk in, and it will be ready at the perfect time. Fried Rice - Must have!! SO GOOD. Best fried rice I've had in awhile. The rice grains are just chewy enough, the flavor/fragrance is mouthwatering. Sushi - 3 stars. I'm picky. Tuna is ok, mackeral is ok, hamachi is ok, amaebi (sweet shrim) is GREAT (get the fried shrimp heads that come with), escolar was ok. The Sake Don, just salmon sashimi over rice, is excellent. Great flavor, light, and totally yummy. I've had better nigiri sushi, but the other food gives this place a solid 4 stars. I would be back over and over for the first two dishes! Food The food was enjoyable. We ordered a variety of rolls, tempuras, noodle soups, steamed egg, edamame, Aand sashimi. We were quite satisfied with pretty much everything food wise. The only complaint I have is that the edamame was sprinkled erratically with salt: some had tons and most had none. NOTE: Even if you don't like raw sushi/seafood, you can still have a delicious meal here. There are a variety of cooked items and non-seafood items. The Crouching Tiger roll is good because it's got cooked salmon and red snapper. Ambiance Pretty decent and modern. Suitable for a casual date. Service This is where most of my gripes are. Don't come here if you are in a grumpy, rushed mood. Service can be very slow, and the waitress we had didn't bring us half the plateware that we needed. They brought us the food on fancy serving dishes but no individual plates for us to eat on. It felt like we had to ask five times before we had enough plates, bowls, etc to eat on. I ordered one of the sashimi combo, which came with 15 pieces of sashimi with 2 amaebi (sweet shrimp), and the sashimi slices were SO GENEROUS, PERFECT CUT (of the fish), and FRESH of course. Also ordered Toro Sushi and Uni sushi, I was in Heaven because they were so generous with their portion even with delicacies like these. Also ordered Pork Katsu as appetizer; it was a well seasoned (even without the dipping sauce), juicy and tender, no wonder everyone in the restaurant ordered this. Cons: the grouper sushi was too chewy for us, but it's not the restaurants fault. Dessert: tempura Ice cream, green tea and red bean flavor. Not the best, but definitely not the worst. For a suburban place, Mori Ichi definitely is great! Friendly staff, good amounts of food, decent quality, decent price. But, compared to what you could get downtown, this place is a bit more lacking. If I were only comparing to suburban sushi places, this would've been a 5-star review, but the thought that I could drive just 20 mins into the downtown area to get something much fresher drops this down a notch. Other than that, I definitely do love coming here! They always give superb treatment. The food has never been cold (weird that a few reviews complained about that), and I have never been neglected good service. I've only come at night (7-9), so it's never super crowded, maybe another reason I've never experienced bad service. But, advice to those who complain about lackluster service- a lot of Asian restaurants don't pester diners and are expecting you to flag them down should you need anything. This is what I always do, and it's been fine. One thing I do have to commend- the waiters and waitresses really know their menu well. Even if you only vaguely describe a dish, they will be able to remember it immediately and lead you to the correct menu option. Very impressive! Will definitely be back! read more

I like Mori Ichi. Food is good and reasonably priced. But why the 3 stars? It was the one bad experience we had last week. Don't get me wrong - food was great. But service was TERRIBLE. I don't usually write a bad review but my experience recently prompted me to. We were a group of 9 for lunch last Friday. We were seated promptly. No problem with that. Menus were given out. Then we waited. And waited. And waited... Fifteen minutes later and no one came to take our order. No one even apologized for the delay. Then I noticed that the waitress who took orders was the same one delivering food. Only one person doing everything in the dining room during lunch. Sigh, it was going to be a long lunch... I understand that things happen. Waitstaff calling in sick. I get it. But it would have been nice if someone came over and said something. Finally another waiter arrived. Someone took our order. Then we waited. And waited. And waited... Our food finally came but there was a half hour lag between the time the first person got her food and the last person. Again, no one apologized or came over to pacify the irritated customers. When asked about the order for the last person, the waitress sounded and looked annoyed at us. She went on to blame the kitchen. When the bill arrived, they automatically included a 20% tip. I understand we're a large party but it's kinda arrogant on the part of the restaurant to assume that they deserve that 20%!!! Most restaurants include an 18% tip on large parties. At 20% I would expect a high level of service!!! On top of that, I had to pay 50 cents for a to go order. Reason - because of the styrofoam box!!! I'm not quibbling the 50 cents but to be charged for this??? Why wasn't I charged 50 cents for the styrofoam box for my leftovers. Mori Ichi needs to get their act together. A simple gesture - an apology to pacify irritated customers go a long way... Customer Service is important! read more

Just A-Ok. It's on the same strip as Keeper's Sushi, but this was a bit cheaper. As the night went on, it got really packed fast after 6pm. I wasn't too hungry but decided to try out some of the food. The super white tuna nigiri was just ok, I've had better ones elsewhere. It was also a bit smaller than usual. I also ordered a tempura udon. The soup base was flavorless, it was basically water plus a pinch of salt. I kept adding the seasoning probably more than five times and still lacked flavor. The only good thing is that it comes w/ two tempura shrimp and 3 tempura vegetable pieces which is a bit more than some other places. Best part was the side salad w/ creamy dressing. Came today for an anniversary and I think this will be my new sushi spot. Today they had a few specials like fatty tuna sashimi (2piece) for $5.99. They also have weekday specials until 7:30pm of sashimi w/sushi. So this is what we had: - tempura bento box (comes with soup, salad, and chef selected sashimi ), so good! $14, not too bad. - Chopped scallop (2piece) for $3, my favorite. - Crawfish roll $6.50, it had raw crawfish and crawfish tempura in it, very food. - Spider roll, $5, im not a big fan of it but my bf loved it. - Fatty tuna, normally $9, today was $6, 2 pretty big pieces, soft, Im ok with it, it tastes like other fish to me lol. - Salmon Skin roll, $3.50, decent, but was crunchy! Was very quiet when I got there but it started to get packed very quick. To those that love sushi, get the sushi boat! I saw someone got it, and WOW, I'm so getting that next time lol I believe its around $33, good deal! My waitresses were very nice and helpful with my sushi selection. However when it got packed, 1 was unable to handle the load of customers so she did not look too happy when I asked her to help me lol. Ever since I visited Japan, I've been trying to find good Japanese food in Houston. Well, I'm glad to say this place gets a "thumbs up" from me. I would describe this place as a small, quaint family-owned restaurant. Today, there was only 1 waitress servicing the entire restaurant. However, she did a very good job of being attentive, and anticipating the customers' needs. Getting down to the food, the star of the show for me was the ten cha soba. The noodles had a great bite to them. I loved dipping them in the soba tsuyu (dipping sauce) and slurping it up like the Japanese locals do! My noodles also came with 2 large shrimp tempura, and you know I also dipped these babies into the dipping sauce. It was just heaven! The tempura batter was light and crispy, and it coated the shrimp beautifully. My sister ate the tempura udon. While the tempura and udon were great, the soup could've been more flavorful. We also ordered a bunch of sushi (spicy salmon and spicy tuna handrolls, crunchy roll, and chilli roll). These were ok, according to my brother and sister, but I think we just ordered the wrong sushi. Next time, I'll just order the spicy salmon and spicy tuna rolls. The food was otherwise affordable for the amount that was served. Also, since we came here during lunch, they did not offer ramen dishes. I will definitely be coming back to try out their shoyu ramen. My siblings may even try their don dishes too. read more

This to me is the Hokkaido of Sugar Land, and I will be back soon to take advantage of their amazing lunch specials! I came with my dad and ordered three lunch specials - shrimp tempura (A), 10 piece sushi, and the sushimi lunch special. The shrimp tempura lunch special was super delicious - the shrimp, zucchini, and sweet potato was fried to perfection, and the sushi pieces included in the bento were super fresh. The salad was overdressed though, so I didn't care much for it. The sashimi in the lunch special included 3 pieces of salmon and 3 pieces of tuna, which were probably the best I've ever had. They were huge - the thickest and most generous cuts of fish I had ever seen, and they were extremely fresh. So. Good. And it was only $8 something! Other fresh options are the salmon sashimi bowl thing with rice, the chirashi, and lunch combo H. Overall, awesome meal, all the way down to the miso soup we started with. Was introduced to this little gem by friends. I liked the different menu options given. I was told that this can be compared to Hokkaido but some different menu options and tastes a bit better. The waiter was attentive enough to refill our drinks and take away empty plates. For the price that these foods are at, it's pretty good. (Of course there are other sushi places that are amazingly delicious, but that is at a different price range.) At the end of the day, I would come here again to eat. Chirashi bowl: 5/5 There aren't many cuts of fish. But I was just fine with what I got. The cuts were thick, which was a bit surprising and great. I loved the proportions. Not too much of the sushi rice. Agedashi tofu: 5/5 Comes out with sauce separately. You pour it on when you're ready to eat. The tofu is crispy on the outside, so soft inside. It was delicious. Tonkatsu: 5/5 It didn't carry a heavy pork smell. It came with a sauce to dip in but I ate it plain. The way that it was cooked is delicious. I've been coming here for years! They have The BEST shrimp fried rice! It's tucked off in the same shopping center as fitness connection and bravos Mexican restaurant. The sushi is always fresh and then have great lunch and combo options. $4 glass of wine!! And that's standard! Best bang for the buck sushi in Sugar Land! Great lunch specials everyday. Lunch portions are huge! I regularly order the sushi special with spicy salmon roll and miso soup. This is a great compromise for sushi lover and non-sushi eaters. There seems to be only one waitress at any given time. I don't know if I am spoiled by other restaurants or if the quality has simply deteriorated, but I can no longer endorse this restaurant that used be my favorite and helped introduced me to the awesome Japanese cuisine. Mori Ichi's most captivating point to me was the cheap lunch special for only $9.50 as of February 2015. You can choose from the bento box entrees of fried shrimp tempura, salmon teriyaki, chicken teriyaki, and Japanese fried pork cutlet, and all bento box comes with few pieces of sushi, salad, and rice. You can also get one of three sushi combinations for this lunch special too. All these come in a sizable portion so you can get full from these! Out of all lunch specials, my favorite is the fried shrimp tempura, which I have yet to find another Houston Japanese restaurant that does a better job than Mori. Always freshly fried when you ordered, these Japanese fried shrimps are generous coated with bread crumbs that both adds a nice touch of crunchiness and preserves the shrimps from drying out. The bento box special gets you three nicely-sized shrimps for you to enjoy these fried deliciousness. Unfortunately, I had to withdraw my endorsement when I bit into frozen bits in multiple sashimi pieces. When I raised the issue to the waitress who asked the chef afterward, she matter-of-factly told me that it is normal because it was not completely thawed. I am very serious about my sushi and I understand that restaurants have to use frozen fishes for budgetary considerations. However, what upsets me was the frozen parts of the sashimi were parallel to the cut, which means they were pre-cut pieces. Delivering half-frozen sushi is simply unacceptable. Maybe I will return for the cheap shrimp tempura that I believe is still the best in Houston, but after catching Mori's low standard for sushi materials in action, I don't think I will be frequent here as often as I would before. --- tl;dr version: 1) Unbeatable lunch specials 2) Best shrimp tempura in town 3) Disappointingly low-quality sushi read more

Mori Ichi's sushi felt a lot more authentic than most sushi I've eaten in the States. Mori Ichi has some Americanized rolls, and a pretty good selection of nigiri sushi. I went at 9:00pm on a Friday, yet the establishment was still fairly busy. The service was pretty good though - our tea and waters were regularly refilled and the waitresses were otherwise relatively hands off. We ordered assortment of nigiri sushi and one Handsome Roll. The fish was not the freshest I've had, but it was still really good quality. I was a big fan of the red snapper and albacore, though the tuna was 'meh'. The salmon eggs and squid were both pretty good. The preparation of the rice and seaweed throughout the food reminded me of some of the sushi meals I had the pleasure of having in Japan. All in all one of the better sushi places around. A tad expensive at $1.25 / piece of nigiri sushi, but definitely worth the experience. read more
