Have been here twice and it has a more laid back family atmosphere compared to the nearby popular and somewhat trendy Keeper's. The staff is friendly and the food is good. I've tried two different bento boxes for lunch specials so far and both were good. Even something as basic as miso soup isn't as salty as some locations, the tempura shrimp was crispy without too much oil, terriyaki salmon was tasty without too much sauce. Flavors are balanced overall and prices are very reasonable. Tried a few sushi pieces and the rice consistency is good as well as cuts of various fish pieces were fresh. read more

Decent sushi, terrible service, and run by Chinese people, ...very well, those words can describe any sushi joint in Houston, but this one is also super small and oddly busy! The sushi rolls here are the same as you would find anywhere else...which means that everywhere else serves decent sushi as well. So what makes this place stand out more so than the others? The terrible service comes to mind...it's not that the wait staff is incredibly mean or gets your order wrong, it's just that they are super slow. If you're not looking to spend too much money compared to dining at Azuma's then here you have it. I think it is by far the best cheap sushi out there in Sugar Land. They also have cha soba and ramen which are pretty decent. The don and udon bowls are really filling and worth every penny. There are salmon and hamachi kama's but most first timers who haven't been don't realize it takes awhile to cook. Lastly, if you're lucky to come on a day where they happen to have fried ice cream with a layer of cake then you will most definitely be satisfied. The service is decent considering there are only two waiters, though, during busy hours they tend to be doing a lot more than what is expected of them. You many want to be patient with them at times. They only have happy hour sakes because their sushi prices per order is beyond cheap compared to most expensive places. And by the way, I'm a waiter there haha! read more

I would've definitely been royalty at this place had I discovered Yelp during my H-town days. I would come here for lunches and dinners all the time to meet with people for work and also with friends for fun! They're busy but in a good way and their wait staff really tries their best to keep up with it all during the rush times. There are booths and tables and if you call ahead you could reserve parts of the restaurant for your own private party! I love their always fresh sushi made by the owner (Andy), his wife, son, and other friendly employees. It's always nice to be greeted upon entering as well! The sushi here is fresh and it's not as expensive as some other stores around the area. It's nice and quaint so you don't have to compete with other customers to get your food in a timely manner. I've been going here since it opened up and even after their little fire incident in the kitchen. The owner/chef Andy is a great guy and the more time you spend here the more he gets to know you and the more you can customize things without an extra costs! As some other have reviewed. They are a little bit cheaper than Keeper's, which is the place we usually go to, right down the street in the same plaza. We have too many check-ins at Keepers to count, only 2 here, because friends and family know Keepers more and like what they order. I came here again with hubby today, and him being half a Japanese, gave me a food and culture lesson on the food here. Long story short, Mori Ichi is authentic Japanese and Keepers is more Americanized. Keepers has the udon, ramen, sushi and agedashi tofu everyone likes to order. But Mori has really authentic native Japanese dishes that people here normally don't know to order, such as sweet shrimps and sukiyaki. They also play only soft Japanese music, and with more humble store decors. The service was great! All the waitresses speak Mandarin, which made us feel right at home. Decent sushi... HORRIBLE customer service. Plenty of staff everywhere but none pay attention to you. Took about 15 min for iced tea and a water. Then another 35 for appetizer. I ordered fried and and said was pregnant so I wanted to make sure nothing raw was in it or garnished with raw food. She assured me by saying, "well you ordered a fried roll... " I said "yes, I just want to confirm bc I'm pregnant and cannot have raw food" she said "nothing raw in that" (very rudely) it came with RAW sushi along the top of the roll. (Didn't mention this on menu). When I had to send it back she was very mad and said "well I thought you meant inside the roll" WHAT??!! Lol then she said you should read it next time, I said I did and didn't see that so she suggested I was more specific in my question. We then had to find a bus boy to pay because no one would come back to our table. This place and staff are just ridiculous. You can tell it's mainly regulars so I guess if they don't personally know you they'd rather you not walk in. read more

My go-to restaurant when I'm back in Sugar Land. My family loves this place.. Everything I've had has tasted good. The sushi and sashimi alike are relatively fresh and cheap. The bento box comes with a ton of food, the tempura is fried well, and there's a great variety in dishes. The katsu-don and similar bowls are also tasty. The portions are pretty generous for the price you pay, and most of the dishes will actually come with miso soup! I've recently fallen for the chirashi bowl. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of sashimi that came with it, and I appreciated the furikake seasoning on my rice. Will probably be ordering it the next time I'm in. My dad's a big fan of the hamachi kama. (Be warned, that takes a little longer to cook.) The service is friendly and prompt as well. I'd just recommend bringing a jacket. For some reason, I find it really cold here during dinner, but for lunch, the temperature's fine. They've also got a few TVs in here, so I've been able to catch some games while dining in. read more

This is my family's to go to sushi place since it's very close to home. We usually come for dinner around 7, right before there's a big crowd. It's fairly small inside, and they usually only have a couple of waiters/waitresses for the whole restaurant. They offer weekday specials Monday through Thursday from 11AM-730PM, consisting of either rolls, sushi, or sashimi. The different combos have a mixture of each, and come with miso soup. They also offer lunch specials daily from 11AM-230PM (or 1130AM on Sundays). These include bento boxes and sushi combos served with miso soup as well. Personally, I think their lunch specials & weekday specials are a great deal! Lunch Special F: 5/5, you receive 7 pieces of sushi & 1 handroll, either Salmon Skin, Spicy Tuna, or Spicy Salmon. Weekday Special I: 4/5, 4 piece sushi & fuji maki. The fuji maki is a baked roll. It consists of smoked salmon, avocado, & cream cheese with spicy mayo on top. It's pretty much a glorified, baked Philadelphia roll. Shrimp Tempura Appetizer: 5/5. This comes with 3 pieces of shrimp tempura & 3 vegetables, usually zucchini and sweet potato. The shrimp tempura is so light, flaky, and crispy. Chirashi: 5/5, assorted fish over rice. Typically each slice is pretty thick. They usually give you one slice of the shrimp, egg, octopus, etc, and two slices of salmon, tuna, and the like. Sake Don: 5/5, this is basically a chirashi, but with ALL salmon. This is my personal favorite, since I LOVE salmon. They give you ~10 slices, which are sliced pretty thin, but not TOO thin. It's still a generous amount. Sometimes the rice can be a little inconsistent, but majority of the time it has been great. Scallop handroll: 3/5. When I first got it, I was a little saddened to see that the scallop was not filled all the way to the top. However, it comes with bits of tempura flakes inside, which is pretty awesome, but it doesn't make up for the lack of scallop. The seaweed was also a little... Stiff. Overall, I really appreciate this restaurant and their quality of food with their price. I have yet to have any complaints about this place, but I tend to order the same things every time. Consistently good quality Japanese food at great prices! Really, you can't go wrong here. I've been here dozens of times, and I've never been disappointed. Lunch here is excellent - bento combos are filling and at really low prices as well. Shrimp tempura bento is definitely my go to! Also, salmon skin rolls - quite excellent. I almost gave this place 2 stars but giving it a courtesy star for Sugar Land relativity. If you live in Sugar Land, feel like having Japanese food but don't feel like driving into the city, I would knix the last requirement and just drive somewhere further. The amount of time that is saved in driving is made up with the slowness of service. I want to say the place is understaffed, but they have 2 waitresses, 1 waiter, and a petite restaurant. Our water glasses didn't automatically refill and TWO things were forgotten in our order... and it all happened to be the stuff my mother in law ordered. That's a no-no. How does one describe their soul mate? There are no words. I cannot comment on the quality of their sashimi as I am no expert and have no craving for such items. However, sushi rolls.... I am basic I know, but this is my achilles heel and Mori Ichi has the sharpest arrow. My favorite rolls at this joint are the Mori Master roll, Baked Salmon roll, and Mori Maki roll. Too much sushi for one person, but that doesn't stop me from grabbing the closest person to take me there. Pricing is pretty cheap for specialty rolls and the rolls are a good size. The Mori Master roll is actually on the larger end for rolls, bringing me close to aspiration, but such a good death that would be. Master is tempura shrimp wrapped in sushi rice covered in raw fish and avocado. The baked salmon roll can take a while since the salmon does require baking. Inside is spicy tuna and a variety of other items. Mori maki is a deep fried roll. Also, their tamago has to be the best I've ever had. Super fresh and flavorful. You will find no freezer thawed version here. The commute is ridiculous from the northwest Houston area, taking me almost an hour to get here, but does that stop me? No. Just a note, it's a freaking tundra inside the restaurant. Bring a jacket or a blanket or... both. read more

The sushi rolls were huge and delicious. The Katsu Don was also great, but came with mushrooms which I didn't really care about. I will be requesting to remove the mushrooms next time I visit. I used to be a regular here. The food quality is good. Twice, however, they charged me different prices than the price listed on the menu. They told me the menu was wrong instead of reducing my bill. Another time, we waited over a half hour for sushi. Turns out, they had run out of uni and went to get more. A little communication would have gone a long way. Three strikes--I won't be back. I came here tonight with two of my girl friends, in which one of them suggested this place. After seeing that their rating on yelp was only 3.5, I was a bit skeptical. I ordered the Sake Don which was raw salmon over rice. (The lady corrected me when I said it wrong...lol I am SO sorry). My friend ordered the grilled eel over ice and my other friend ordered a bunch of sashimi pieces (3$ each it seems). My meal was $13.50 but to be honest I am not sure if that is considered average price for this type of dish or not. Sadly I was too busy chatting it up that I didn't take a picture of it to show but the presentation was nice and it came with miso soup! The miso soup was average tasting but wasn't bad. I would eat it again. Our food came out in reasonable time but it didn't come out all at once for us. It was one by one with the grilled eel over rice being last. Love the presentation with that one because it came in a small bento box (japanese lunch box you see in anime xD) The salmon tasted fine but I had better at other sushi places. I love that they gave me a lot of pieces. I want to say at least 9-11 pieces. (Wish i took a picture to confirm). But I was definitely surprised that it came with that much. The rice was sushi type rice which went well with the salmon. The only thing that lacked was veggies of some sort. I expected some type of veggie in the dish but I guess you can't expect everything. My friends seem to enjoy theirs since they at it all with no complaints. The service was mediocre. The waitress was friendly. Even though we finished eating we were still chatting away but they gave us our tickets anyway. After we paid, they didn't bother to refill our water glasses. (Which is why I took out one star). We were clearly still gonna hang around to talk, you could at least be nice to refill our waters and not abandon us after getting the check. Delicious! This is my go-to place for chirashi bowls and fried rice. (Both are my guilty pleasure/comfort foods.) Their chirashi bowl is priced at $13! It's cheaper than most other sushi places in the area. The strange thing is that I feel like I haven't ever gotten the same fish in my bowl each time I order this. It may be the same fish, but the pieces just look different. I don't mind all that much, it just makes it more exciting to eat! Their combination seafood fried rice is pretty expensive ($12) but pretty worth it. It's so full of meat! The Master roll is definitely worth the special roll price ($12, too, I think?) It's got a lot of different fish in it and quite frankly, its just yummy. Oh! The sushi pizza is... Interesting. They give you a couple of options for multiple fish types or combinations. I got salmon and eel sushi pizzas. ($13 ea) EDIT: Lost 1 star from me after having come here on a Tuesday lunch (albeit the Tuesday after the massive flooding), and receiving pretty horrible service. I don't really blame them for it, seeing as how half of Houston was under water, but I still felt like they could have done a better job. Mori Ichi is probably one of the better, more traditional sushi joints in the Sugar Land area. Although they do have some Americanized rolls such as the Crunchy Roll and the Philadelphia Roll, their style of sushi-making is a lot more traditional and on-point in comparison to other places I've been to like Miyako's, Azuma, or Kona Grill. Why the three stars then, you ask? Well, ever since they opened up shop in Sugar Land, I have been a regular customer of theirs. A couple of years back, I would have given this place five stars. However, I can say that time has unfortunately taken its toll on the place as the quality of their entrees have sort of diminished over the years. For example, their Donburi used to be a bowl of awesomeness. Now, most of their Donburi items have simply become a sweet mess of just onions and rice with hardly any meat or egg to be found. Some of their soups have also fallen flat on flavor and their rolls have more rice now than filling. I remember taking my girlfriend here after not having gone in a long while, and we were both left wondering if there was even any crab in my girlfriend's California roll. Don't get me wrong, their sushi is still fantastic, but it simply isn't as good as it used to be. If you do plan on checking this place out, be sure to order the Spider Roll and the Handsome Boy. Their Sake is also dirt cheap so be sure to order that as well ;) tl;dr Mori Ichi is better than most sushi restaurants in Sugar Land, but the quality of their food has gone down over the years. read more
