Not sure why we didn't come here sooner. Some folks might remember the old Russian Tea House on University. We used to love going there. Real comfort food. Sadly they closed several years back. In the years that have followed we have been to Red Cow, Marc Heu and Great Harvest but somehow not to Moscow on the Hill. Well after getting some food to go the other day, we can't wait to go back. They are in a nice location with a large parking lot which is always a nice convenience. We ordered Verenki (dumplings), Deruny (potato pancakes), 2 beef Pirozhki, Moscow Fries and for dessert the Sweet Blintz. I love all dumplings and this was no different. Fresh and comforting. While we were a bit surprised that the Deruny was more pancake-like than crispy like latkes, we certainly enjoyed them. We especially enjoyed the caramelized onions that were stewed down perfectly to add a nice touch of sweetness to accompany that nice potato pancake. The Pirozhki were smaller than what we used to get from the Russian Tea House but we felt these Pirozhki had better flavor and could easily smell the yeast from the homemade shell. The Moscow Fries are addicting and more than enough to share. Sliced potatoes with garlic. Oh my. Oh and that dessert. Oh my that dessert. Filled with a lemon vanilla mascarpone, cranberry port sauce, whip cream and some candied pecans. The perfect complement of sweet, savory, salty, crunchy, creamy. just an excellent dessert. We really enjoyed our meal and will be making up for lost time as we plan to go back again soon!

This was my first time at Moscow on the Hill and overall a really great experience. The food was solid, but the drinks are where this place really shines. The martinis are to die for, and everything is very reasonably priced for the quality. They make their own vodka, which is such a cool touch, and it's definitely worth trying a few of the different flavors. The horseradish vodka martini was surprisingly really good. Service wasn't overly warm, but still friendly and attentive enough throughout the meal. The atmosphere is great, and the patio is easily one of my favorites in the area. Such a good spot to sit and enjoy a drink, especially in the warmer months. There is plenty of street parking around which makes it a super easy experience.

I am so happy I finally made it out to Moscow on the Hill! They don't have designated parking, but luckily street parking was easily available at dinner time. The inside is dark and dated but it was a nice day and we grabbed a table on the patio, which was lovely and spacious! The menu is very nostalgic and offers many favorites from the former Soviet Union that I grew up eating. I wanted to try something I don't normally eat at a family gathering. I got the vereniki (filled with potato and onions - more commonly known as peorogi) smothered in a mushroom cream sauce, topped with steak and onion straws. It was delicious and super hearty; not something I could eat very often. I also got a Moscow mule but was a bit bummed at how weak it was and the fact that it wasn't served in the traditional copper cup that helps keep the ice from melting and diluting the drink. I also want to point out that they added a 3.8% credit card charge (which I know is becoming more srandard), and a 20% gratuity, even though we were only a table of 5. Overall, I had a good time and enjoyed myself but not sure there is much there to bring me back anytime soon.

Excellent food and drink every time! The mango mule is superb and I love the ambience and all the food I've ever had here.

See my original review. I came back and want to say: their Moscow fries - yum yum yum and house pickles- "in other rooms, other wonders." Also try their horseradish Martini at least once, but research vodkas before you come in and pretend (in your mind) you are a vodka connoisseur. But externally you ACT like 007, ordering his favorite. Top vodkas for martinis - verified with research. (Order dry to highlight the vodka): Kettle One Holland -- peppery, classic Grey Goose France -- smooth, try with lemon twist Belvedere Poland -- character and spice Chopin potato Poland -- texture, texture, texture Haku Japan -- 美味しいです.(it's tasty) Template "dry, (insert vodka here) Martini, (olive garnish or lemon garnish" (they don't have a lemon twist; it will be a wedge #ohwell) Consider this your briefing, Mr/Ms Bond

Cozy restaurant with a unique menu. Moscow On The Hill is a gem! Their menu features Russian cuisine that will broaden your palate. Dim lighting and eclectic decor make for an intimate dining experience. During my visit they had an accordion musician playing around the restaurant which added to the cozy atmosphere. Their dumplings are a fan favorite with 3 different options, but you can't go wrong with any dumpling they offer. This visit I had the chicken Kiev which was crispy, buttery and a perfect accompaniment to the sides provided. My spouse had the czar's medallion which was very cheesy and best to order on a cold winter day. We didn't have any vodka this time but they have a wide selection with some featuring infused flavors. If you're brave, try the horseradish martini!

I was so surprised by the aesthetics and the food of this wonderful restaurant. This was suggested by my daughter and a party of 6 arrived for a wonderful meal. Arrived and realized that the date was scheduled for less than 6 people and they were amazing in getting all of us in, even though they were not taking walk-ins this night. So appreciate their thoughtfulness! Sitting in a wonderful corner overlooking the main street and side area and it was perfect. There are curtains between each table except the window front seats. Interesting layout and great atmosphere. We were also serenaded by a wonderful accordion player throughout the night. We tried so many things and shared to be able get even more (pictures included, I remembered). Deruny- these amazing pancakes/crepes with onion, wonderful Chebourek- lamb and potatoes go wonderful together Siberian Pelmeni- wonderful meat filled dumplings, get the chili-garlic Grandma's Golubsty- Three large cabbage rolls with a wonderful sauce Chicken Kiev- my daughter said it was great Babushka Stew- two ordered and loved it We also tried the desserts: Medovik- honey cake, holy honey it was good tiramisu- wonderful and you could definitely get the flavors sweet blintz- lemon and pecans on a crepe with cranberries, wowzer zapekanka- cheesecake, cannot go wrong here chocolate ganache tart- we fought over this one, small but mighty I am putting this on my list to return! We are super excited to take others to this restaurant as it was amazing and it is a must if you are in the St. Paul area!

I have been here a total of 3 times over the past 6 years, including once in 2020 right before the pandemic started, and it is refreshing for me to see that this place continues to thrive. Even if I didn't like all the dishes that I have had, I know that this establishment is a gem and needs to be preserved in the Twin Cities because there is not a lot of Russian food representation. Since I speak Russian, I was able to converse with the server in Russian and ordered some of the most commonly seen dishes and drinks, including borscht, pelmeni, and kvas. Both the pelmeni and the vareniki tasted pretty good, and personally I preferred having them with vinegar rather than sour cream, and this time was no exception. The borscht was okay as the beet flavor wasn't potent enough. Normally the color would be a lot darker, closer to the color of the beet itself, but it wasn't the case here. Maybe it got watered down a bit in some way. My friend at the time had the mushroom blinchiki and the yazik ruben. I had a little bit of both and they both were solid, pretty much meeting my expectations of what they would taste like. The ruben had enough melted provolone to provide a layer of extra flavor with beef tongue as the meat. It was slightly dry, but good enough. The blinchiki was abundant in amount for the price which was cool. Since I went here on my birthday in 2022, I had a chocolate ganache tart as well, and it tasted pretty standard, no highlights, so I have no further comments. I think this place has the potential to be a 5 star, and I am aware that I have not had any entrées yet here, but none of the dishes I had were spectacularly good in my opinion. What was nice, however, was to have Russian food options here at all, especially since I am from a city close enough to Russia, it felt a bit like home.

Why haven't I been here sooner? OMG...this is such a great restaurant! We stopped here before going to the theater downtown and had the most perfect meal. There are floor to ceiling light airy drapes separating each table in the main dining area and it gives such an intimate vibe. If you wanted someplace special to take a someone (such as a special occasion, anniversary, date to impress) I enthusiastically recommend this place. It serves comfort foods done to perfection. The bar area looked like a really cool place to stop in for happy hour, too. We had cocktails before dinner, and their cocktail menu places a heavy emphasis on vodkas, many of them house infused with flavors. I tried the Maryusa Gold (cherry vodka + champagne) and it was a winner. Apparently, they have a horseradish vodka that is fantastic, but we didn't try it. As an appetizer we got the Georgian cheese bread, and if you love cheese as I do, this is a must try item. Next time I may try their dumplings. For entrees, we got the Beef Stroganoff and Chicken Kiev. Both came with sides of perfectly cooked vegetables (crisp but tender) and mashed potatoes. My partner doesn't normally *gush* about how good food is, but they did when eating the beef stroganoff, which really says a lot. The coating on the chicken Kiev was a little tough to cut through, but that dish was otherwise very tasty. For dessert, we got a White Russian cocktail and their riff on tiramisu; both were excellent. The server wasn't overly effusive or welcoming, but she was prompt and efficient. We were able to find street parking, but they do offer parking in the YMCA parking lot next door for $5. We will absolutely be back; this was a really memorable meal. The only criticism I can think of is that they charge a 3.8% surcharge (which seems inflated) for using a credit card for payment. For a meal this pricy, I can't think of many people who carry around that much cash these days. I really hate it when companies do this; I wish they would absorb this cost into the menu prices as it really rubs me the wrong way.

Genuine Russian menu. The Vodka selection and Vodka mixed drink are top shelf. We were a group of ten and we ordered many different appetizers and created our own little Russian tapas. Beet salad, Deruny, Pirozhok, Fried Pelmini, Mushroom Blinvhiki were among our favorites. ,,,,,,,,and of course the Vodkas.

Super great restaurant with authentic dishes. It was so nice to have something similar to what my grandma used to cook for me! Service is professional and quick. The restaurant itself is very nice, lots of seating, and great bar or happy hour space. Love trying new things every time I go, there are so many great options!

Excellent Russian-themed restaurant serving authentic Russian food (even the staff is Russian themed - I kept looking over my shoulder for my KGB handler; but the staff lacked the cold indifference found at real Russian restaurants). Our entrees were very tasty and the cocktails even better. Enjoyable evening. My only adverse comment is the higher than typical credit card service fee (3.5%). It seems that either they have a greedy card processor or something else.

I think most people there might have been regulars, or it at least seemed that way. Second time, my friend tried to go to the bar to order a drink and she gave up after a while of not being served. I decided to give it a shot. I go to the bar and probably was there for 20 minutes watching everyone get served around me. They didn't even look my way. The bartender was attentive and friendly. The food was honestly a joke 0/10 do not recommend. They have no kidding 5 things on the menu. The chicken nachos were not even edible. The chicken was dry, flavorless and the chips were super stale. They have a small bathroom but yet they can fit a bathroom attendant in it. THE DJ PLAYED ALL THE HOTTEST MUSIC SO THAT WAS A PLUS. Overall it's a decent outing.
