Beacon Inn - Lopez Island room

    Beacon Inn

The location is outstanding, close to everything. Rooms are large but lack proper window coverings…read moreso bright very early in the morning. I can not rate this any higher given the breakfast. Delivered the day before sround 4 pm;: tiny flavoured yogurt, a big dry muffin that looks like it was from a grocery store, a small packaged chedder cheese and a mandarin orange With all the local bake and coffee shops around they could certainly do better. Thank you

Normally I would not pursue a hotel near an airport for even an overnight stay - I prefer B&Bs or…read moresmall hotels in an area of interest. However, in choosing a place to overnight on my way home from Quadra Island, BC, I found Beacon Inn. It is a lovely, Edwardian style inn built in 2000 with modern finishes. It is the area's only Canada Select 5-Star accommodation. The Victoria BC airport is actually in Sidney, up the peninsula, which is a very pretty small town on the sea. Communication ~ all done via email, perfect and timely Rate ~ fair for my choice of room (third floor, no elevator) @ $166 with all taxes Location ~ just outside the commercial area of Sidney and it is easy to find Service ~ they offer an evening sherry in the lobby along with tea and coffee station, lemon water and snacks in the dining room. There is a binder of menus in the lobby. Room ~ stunning in decor: a high bed, flat screen TV, free Wifi, electric FP, windows that open for a breeze, portable air exchanger and a large bath with spa soaking tub, glass shower and full array of Nourish bath products. (see photo) Food ~ I am certain that their "gourmet" breakfast was just that, but my flight to Seattle left at 9 am and I had to return a rental car. They offer two seatings - 8:00 am and 9:15 am - neither of which I could enjoy given my schedule. I was pleased to take their Grab N Go from the fridge, described as "scrumptious." But it consisted of only a Red Delicious apple, a tiny piece of cheddar cheese, a chocolate candy, a tiny raisin muffin and a juice box. I was disappointed since part of the price of a room includes breakfast and this was less than comparable. The kitchen did not even offer a styro or other take-away cup for coffee. Hence the 4 stars instead of 5. I would highly recommend this inn if you are staying near the airport or visiting Victoria, just 30 minutes away. There are a few tourist sites within an easy drive of Sidney as well.

First, the parking and registration is not so easy. If you're carrying luggage, be prepared to wheel it down a windy path toward a the reception door. When we were asked for a travel voucher, to which we presented the Orbitz reservation number; however this was not reflected in any reservation for The Latch Inn. They were also booked with no availability, so we had to find other lodging accommodations. We called to ask for an earlier check in since the Orbitz reservation indicated check in only from 4:00pm - 6:00pm. But at 3:15pm there was no answer at The Latch Inn, so we left a message. At 6:10pm a representative from The Latch Inn called us to ask what the message was because she could not find our reservation. Bad experience with Orbitz and with this situation. I am open to management response.

There were two gentlemen working there - not sure if they were brothers or not, but they were overwhelmed with the breakfast service. While the food was very good, the service was painfully slow - plan for in excess of one hour for breakfast, even if there are only 3-4 other tables. When I think of an Inn, I anticipate a caretaker with a lot of knowledge of the area. The two men working had a huge language barrier thus we stuck with the basic communication. And yes, you will hear your immediate neighbors very clearly.

WOODS on Pender - Hammock above Airstream #1

David (who has checked us in each time) is the best! Their motel rooms are quite comfortable, rustically stylish, and come with a Nespresso coffee maker (and plenty of pods), mini-fridge, a smart TV, and triple-sheeted duvets. The breakfast pastries and dinner offerings at the on-site restaurant are delightful too. I recommend making resos far in advance since they book up quickly for summer weekends. Leave the rat race behind for a weekend or a week--or more--and settle in for a relaxing stay.

A long soak and rejuvenation in a private hot tub, surrounded by greenery and chirping of dozens of birds. One of our night while walking, a fawn stumbled across my path and said hi. Wow! Amazing! The airstream was very comfortable. Nice queen bed. Own shower and bathroom. Hot water. Wifi. Cable. Amazon firebox. Kitchen with microwave and gas stove. Cutlery, pots and pans. Outside you have your own fire pit, 2 person hot tub whirling away and just waiting for you. A bbq set and lawn chairs and a huge umbrella to shade you. A huge hammock for those afternoon book readings. i mean, What more can you ask for? Air-streaming doesn't get any better than this! And the best part...the staff are so nice and accommodating. They'll give a quick orientation on what to do etc and if you need anything, they are a txt msg away. Yet, you are surrounded by nature and a lush flora. Around the property there are countless trails and everything is within a 5-10-15 min drive. There are cafes close by, farms, a bc liquor store, bookstore, restaurants, etc. everything is opening up now. Please go and support local and your backyard. Super easy to book and confirm. This is a beautiful quaint little family run oasis on Mitchell Bay. There are hotel style rooms, and private cabins. We stayed in a private cabin on the waterfront for our anniversary this year. The cabins are stunning. Everything was super clean. You have a full kitchen and appliances should you want to cook, even equipped with a BBQ outside! There's a small living space, and the bathroom felt like a luxury spa! The shower had pebbled floorings which were so nice. The bedroom was cozy and comfortable and not to mention pitch black which was amazing for sleep! We slept with all windows open at night and slept great with the cool air and again I can't stress enough how quiet the property is. My favorite part is the windows at the front looking at the water and the little sitting nook by the kitchen. I sat there or in the chairs out front for most of our trip just admiring the water and stillness. So pretty! There's a little greenery area for sitting, play lawn games, or fire pits for smores. They also have kayaks and paddle boards for use during the day which was a nice amenity. They also have a general store and coffee shop on property with everything you might need. My favorite part is their water system that's fully treated and maintained by them. Because of it the shower water is so soft and serene, and the drinking water is amazing straight from the tap! This was a 10/10 stay from top to bottom, and we already can't wait to come back!

Check-in was done at the lobby. At the lobby one will also find a store and a coffee shop. Complimentary movies and games can also be checked out at the lobby to enjoy back at your lodging. The store offers a little bit of everything, from clothing to snacks. Complimentary ice machines are available. Bagged ice can be purchased though. Lower-level parking is limited and was completely full in the evenings. We were lucky enough to get a parking spot every time we returned from playing. Wheel barrel type carts located at the gate make transporting luggage effortless to rooms. Adirondack chairs are scattered about the edge of the property to enjoy sipping a beverage, reading or admiring the view. A fire-pit, community BBQ, picnic area and kids play area help pass the time while on-site. The paly area is at the lobby end for those who do not wish to have quarters near noise. The cabin we were given was number 10, a handicap unit. The very first cabin upon entrance and the furthest from the lobby and play area. Our cabin was clean and well equipped. Snug Harbor provided us the peace that we were seeking at the time. My one suggestion would be to offer fresh baked chocolate chip cookies in the lobby to establish a more personal touch.

And when I say excellent price I mean about $100 a night, so yeah pretty great for 4 people. Plus there was a complimentary breakfast and free wifi, all included! There was supposed to be a free shuttle from the port where we came in to the hotel, however when we called to confirm that they apologized saying the shuttle runs to the airport instead of the port at the time we needed it. So what did they do? They called a cab for us, and PAID OUR CAB FAIRE. Now that's service. Everyone was extremely courteous and friendly. In our room, the phone didn't work because of an old cable, and when we told the desk they switched it out for us immediately, no problem. Their continental breakfast was surprisingly varied, although don't expect a Hilton line up. It was filling and plenty tasty. The room was clean and pleasant, with a very nice TV with a huge channel selection and like I said, FREE no-strings-attached WIFI. Finally, after leaving the hotel, a concierge chased us all the way to the port attempting to return a book that he thought we had left behind. I have never received such excellent service, well anywhere really, before this. I recommend this hotel 100%, 10/10 would stay at again. The town it's in is quaint and very pretty too. The pub next door however? Definitely pass on that.
