If I could give 0 stars I would. My experience at this establishment was how I assume people in prison are treated in the cafeteria hall.
My husband and I went on a Sunday Saturday afternoon to have what we hoped would be a lovely casual lunch. I had been raving about trying Market 57 out. My husband loves oysters, as well as I, as soon as he saw this place he wanted oysters. I was hesitant as the stall was empty and a 3 person staff (a man and two women) were on their phones and staring at us as we approached. They didn't greet us. It wasn't until we asked where are the East Coast oysters from that the guy spoke and acknowledged us and said "The East Coast" with an attitude, my husband said, "Well I know that, but where?" The guy responded---I don't remember where exactly now. The reason we asked is because our favorites are usually Well Fleets, small and briney. We were looking for their advice on which one we should choose, the East or West Coast. They didn't seem knowledgeable and at $4/oyster I expected more. I was already getting a sense that I wanted to keep on walking - but at that point, my husband really wanted his oysters so he ordered 6, which cost $20.
They asked us what toppings we wanted. At the time I wasn't aware that they had special toppings. It wasn't until I came to write this review and saw the other patrons talk about the 3 flavor toppings that I realized that's what they meant when they asked. My response when they asked was "Yes please, I'd like lemon, mignonette sauce, horser---" Before I could even finish speaking this man cut me off and pointed to a bottle of hot sauce and vinegar and said the toppings are there! I just said, "Oh..ok". I could see it was just vinegar and hot sauce but at that point I was done with the attitude.
Our oysters were ready and all we received was 6 oysters (TERRIBLY SHUCKED, I HAVE NEVER SEEN DIRTIER OYSTERS IN MY LIFE). I'm relieved my husband wasn't sick after. We found a spot to have the oysters at their food stall. They were served with nothing on a bed of ice. Not a fork, spoon, or even a damn lemon wedge. And especially no cocktail sauce! I did see customers eating oysters with a container of cocktail sauce so I got up to ask one of the girls (the guy was ringing up another customer) why we didn't get cocktail sauce when I asked for it. I will admit by this point I was frustrated and annoyed to spend money at this place where we were not being helped in any way. The customers with the cocktail sauce let me know they brought that over from another stall (that should tell you something already). And the girl explained that cocktail sauce would cost extra. Now, there was a line of like 5 people and I wasn't about to wait to order cocktail sauce. I did say to her, when I asked for toppings you just cut me off -- had I known I had to buy cocktail sauce I would have!" And after that, I went and sat back down and lost my appetite after looking at those dirty oysters. I was done and ready to go find something else to eat.
So I walked on, my husband and I head off. My husband left the tray of ice and shells at the counter we sat at. At the time - I did not know we were supposed to put our tray away. Back to the shit customer service, they never said a word to us. So we left it there. It was just us and another group.
We walked to a stall about 20 feet in front of Mother Shuckers and made an order that was going to be a few minutes. So we put our number in and decided to walk to another stall that was about 20 feet to the left of Mother Shuckers. But we had to walk passed Mother Shuckers and that's when all hell broke loose.
As we passed the stall, the man shouted to my husband and me. He said "HEY!! HEY!!! YOU NEED TO PUT YOUR TRAY AWAY!!!!" As people are in line at the register he's doing this. I looked back at him, waved my hand to dismiss him, and said "What is your problem, you've been rude the entire time, how about you put it away" and kept walking.
We had walked over to the other stall and we were standing back reading the menu. When this man from Mother Shuckers walks over and starts calling both of us name after name and shouting at the top of his lungs. I was pissed, scared, and uncomfortable, my husband was telling him to F*ck off and leave us alone. It felt like another New York day with some crazy asshole going off. Until right before he walked away he called my husband a Mother F*cker and a F*ggott.
At that very moment, everything I stood for went right out the window. I gasped, turned to look at him -- and he was at the top of the stairs giving me the "what are you gonna do about it arms". All sense went out the window. I walked, more like charged, over to him. His back was to me - he was actually putting a tray away! With my left hand, I grabbed him by the shoulder so he would turn around and said "WHAT THE F*CK IS YOUR PROBLEM? This is not ok! You do not treat people or speak to people like this!"
