The only jerk chicken spot I feel confident in in Manhattan is Simply Natural Grill, but that dude only comes out in the Spring/Summer as he brings his grill out on the street and does God's work. I did my best to crowdsource a good jerk chicken rec from my Instagram story, and the overwhelming favorite was Peppa's Jerk Chicken. We took the bus up to 28th street, and arrived at what felt like the promised land for a jerk chicken plate: Bob Marley on a Jamaican flag, tin wall panels spray painted with scenery of the homeland, employees slightly rude with thick Jamaican accents, etc. We both got jerk chicken plates with rice & peas and plantains. I was beyond hopeful to have a new year round jerk chicken spot. However, my hopes were stabbed in the heart when I took one bite of the plantains. These were legitimately the worst plantains I've ever had. I couldn't even believe they served us these. The plastic fork couldn't even penetrate the surface of the fried banana, they must have been sitting for DAYS. I wish they just told us they were out of plantains. Decided to give Peppas another try. Boy, what a mistake! Their food is just not good. You wanna compare? In Manhattan, try 'Jumieka'. Now THEY know how to make jerk chicken. They're more expensive but sometimes you get what you pay for. The jerk chicken didn't even seem thoroughly cooked! The patties were flat like a tire ran over them. Yuck just Yuck! Never again. *Sidebar* can you imagine that you can go to a VENDOR IN THE STREET...Jamrock Jerk.......and their food is better than an establishment, a brick and mortar store? This place has very delicious jerk chicken with rice peas and salad all for $12 ( small ) . It was more than enough food for me ! The chicken was spicy just how I like it ! The BBQ sauce was tasty and really made the dish even better than I expected. The place is small kind of like a grab and go type spot but that will not stop me from coming g back ! Was craving some island food so I happened to see this while in the area. I ordered the oxtail with Rasta pasta, oxtail with white rice, curry chicken with white rice and a small order of the jerk chicken. The food was mid. It was just ok. The oxtail were the smaller pieces of the tail and none of the big meaty pieces, just the small end of the tail. Flavors was a bit lacking but edible. The curry chicken was eh. I had better at Golden Krust and that ain't saying much. The only saving grace was the jerk chicken. It was meaty and tasty. Be sure to get both BBQ sauce and the jerk sauce. The service was poor. They were on Jamaican time. IYKYK. Took them almost 10 mins to get my order with no one else in the restaurant. Had to repeat my order like 6x until they got around to hear me when they weren't talking to each other. I don't think I will ever come back to this place. Service and food were not good and I don't even know how they stay in business when talking and joking with each other comes first before customers. read more

If you like white meat, this is the place. Out of all the Peppas I've been to, this was the least juicy. I ordered the large plate (all chicken) and you would think there would be all types of cuts - nope. Maybe I look like the type to like white meat. I give them the extra stars because service was fast and their sauces are pretty good. Not much of a sit down, just come in, order and leave. read more

Big fan of Peppas in Brooklyn so I went here for a quick takeout dinner since I live within walking distance. Generally speaking, the food from Caribbean restaurants has an inverse correlation with great customer service- iykyk. I can deal with it, but I simply cannot deal with dry chicken and certain menu items at 5pm. The extra kicker was, there were no plantains or cabbage SMDH. read more

11/06/23: New location around the job area. Decided to check them out. Basically small store front take out pick up. There's like 4 stools by a counter if you wanted to "dine" in. Ordered small oxtail with pasta. Yikes I guess their rent is high. I know oxtail has become pricey but it was a steep price for a small order. $22.58 that's about the price of a large in Brooklyn. I've been eating jerk chicken all my life and I am offended and disgusted by this that I was given. This is some kind of grilled chicken with some vinegar hot sauce on it. This is not jerk chicken. It was absolutely disgusting. I could not get past the vinegar taste. There's nothing about it that jerk.. i'm not sure if they're selling this mock jerk chicken in this way because it's Manhattan, but it's really offensive to sell this to people and try to pass it off at jerk chicken. read more

Not a fan of the oxtail from here. You will either get some of the most tender juicy oxtail you've ever had or the most tough and dry tasting oxtail. Not worth the risk given oxtail is not cheap. The rice is also inconsistent - either really dry/stale or fresh and tasty. Just not worth the risk ordering from given the inconsistency. read more

I personally can't understand why Peppas doesn't have 5 stats across the board! I go there at least twice a week to get my Mac and cheese, jerk chicken and patties. The oxtail is delicious and often times I get my filet fish, which is seasoned to perfection and tender. The staff is very sweet and they get to know you and they make you feel at home! I love Peppas- shout out to Tatiana, the sweetest young lady behind the register. read more

I have had their jerked chicken platter delivered several times and each time found the chicken plentiful and spiced just right. The rice and beans accompanying the chicken was flavorful. I could do without the plantains which I thought were on the dry side but that was incidental to a very good dinner that was the real thing at a bargain price. read more

Awesome authentic Jerk chicken with healthy portion sizes! It's not scotch bonnet inferno spicy and really hit the spot. Great flavor, juicy, came with dirty rice and I grabbed a festival on the side. Will definitely be coming back! This place just opened in the neighbor and had I only saw two 4 star reviews so I was dragging my heels on going. After visiting I'm giving it 5 stars because it was delicious. My son has been ordering food from Peppas for a few months and is always telling me about it. I came to visit and finally got to experience it myself. Over. The. Top. Amazing. Everyone was friendly and the service was excellent. We decided to eat the side counter instead of taking it home. So glad we did because the music created the perfect vibe to enjoy our meal. The food was heavenly with deep flavors. I made a promise to myself to eat there every time I'm in town. Today was jerk chicken. I was the first order for the end of the year (12/31/24). I spent over $120 dollars on 2 transactions. I'd order 2 beef patties, 1 jerk, 1 spinach, and 1 veggie a total of 5 patties at $4. I only received 4 patties...missing a beef patty. I should have checked the bag before leaving. However, I was on the phone and the woman that took my order was looking at the receipt getting the patties. How can you get it wrong or ever forget a patty...when you are looking at the receipt. Make a long story short I only received 4 patties, and I'd tried calling the Peppas Jerk at 718-757-9756 @ 12:16pm and no one answered. If someone answered the phone, then I would not have left this review. I was the first order (you are looking at the receipt) there was no way to get is wrong or forget so I'm led to believe it was intentional. Ever way bad business. read more

I felt the portion of oxtail was small for a large and the flavor or seasoning fell short. They also forgot the plantains which was a bummer. O.M.G. This new Jamaican place in the hood is such a gem! The jerk chicken is so delicious! I don't know how long they usually grill the chicken but the bones are crispy already. This beloved institution just opened on my block and I've been waiting for months so was eager to try it. So was the rest of the neighborhood as there was a line out the door. They just opened and given the demand didn't quite have the system of ordering and picking things up down yet, but all the staff were friendly and helpful. Expect some delays for now. I love Jamaican food but there are few authentic places to get it in Manhattan so I decided to try this out with a classic order: jerk chicken dinner with rice and peas and side salad. What I got was a packed - and I mean packed - tin full of about half a chicken chopped into various sized pieces and a heap of smokey rice and peas. This was more than enough for two meals! The chicken was tender and juicy and full of heat. Bone sucking good! The rice also had a smokey flavor with added curry sauce. Very complex and unusual flavors. I'm sure Jamaican food experts will have more nuanced reviews of this but suffice to say my belly was full and I was extremely happy after I devoured a huge helping. Can't wait to go back and try more things. Please note this is strictly a take out place. There is NO place to sit and given the small size of the place and it's popularity even standing against the one small counter is not possible. I'll be glad when they get things down and I can just order from Grub Hub. read more

Ordered a lunch special and recieved no meat when I watched the lady cut up fresh chicken. Wasn't welcoming. The chicken was good for the mini piece of wing I had. Shady shady. It was my second visit at the restaurant because I loved their curry goat on my first visit. I came in for an early lunch with my daughter and ordered a curry goat for myself and a jerk chicken for my daughter. We also ordered the patties 2 jerk Pattie and 1 beef and 1 curry chicken Pattie. My total came up to 50 plus dollars (no problem paying for what I enjoy) but when I asked if I can have oxtail gravy on my rice and peas the dark skinned girl with the black bonnet made a face like it was a problem so then I asked her if that was ok she said it was fine. Food great, establishment clean, but don't ever make me feel like MY CHOICES which I'm PAYING FOR does not sit well with you. I hope she sees this review and checks her attitude! From the moment I step inside of this Peppas jerk chicken restaurant I felt so welcoming, the staffs are very friendly and the food is amazing especially the jerk chicken and fried chicken with a serving of salad. their prices are reasonable like the $10 lunch special that comes with a bottle of water or soda. Oh hell yes. Walked in on a sleepy Sunday afternoon around 1 p.m., and the place was already humming. Grills sizzling, the air thick with spice and smoke. Ordered the large jerk chicken with "Peppaa Pasta" (yeah, that's how they spell it and yeah, it lives up to the hype). Waited maybe 8 minutes. Worth every second. What landed in my hands was a box of joy: chicken charred to the edge of blackened perfection, but somehow still juicy as hell. That jerk sauce? A slow burn with soul. Spicy, sure; but not punishing. I came in to pick up an order but the guy (owner?) refused to serve me and won't give me the order. I waited 10 min. and finally another old lady came and gave me a tiny burger size container with some rice and a piece of chicken in it (see picture). Not what I paid for ($16). Either the guy was racist (he's black and I'm Asian) or he had a bad day. But not the way to treat a customer. I know because I'm 70. Won't never go there again. Horrible service, horrible experience. But there's a surprise ending: I went back to my car and was blocked by an ice cream truck. I waited for 10 min and was upset. Then the young driver came back with dinner he just bought near by. Nicely apologized. Then he said, "Hey want a cone?" I was surprised and said yes. He went to the back and made me an ice cream cone. We both laughed and went our separate way. It cheered me up and THAT's a great way to treat someone, especially when you made a mistake! read more
