Hmm, I am not so sure what they were trying to serve here. Not anything authentic Japanese . Sushi meets Burritos ? But Chipotle or Qdoba is better if you want to have a burritos. We ordered Poke and they loaded that plate with Mayonnaise. - We also ordered soft shell crab bowl and for $14 a bowl , it came with two small pieces of overcooked dried up soft shell crab. I have tried Poke many places and I can tell you that's not how poke should be made . Their brown rice was so mushy made me think that someone was very generous with the water or did not know how to make brown rice - The avocado was not fresh, I could see some brown spots meaning it's siting out too long . Passed by this place and decided to come back after reading so many good reviews but was unfortunately disappointed. It's pretty pricey for the quality of food that they serve. I ordered the tuna, modified by taking out the jalapeños and adding cream cheese. The cream cheese was added in small sections throughout and not spread equally. The sauce it comes with was overpowering in some spots yet other bites were very bland. The burrito was also messy to eat and falling apart. It's wrapped in foil and after peeling away you can tell that's all that's holding it together, without that it started leaking and completely falling apart. To add onto the experience we came in an hour before closing and not one person greeted us or tried to lead us in the right direction (self ordering). read more

I basically never forget to take a photo for my Yelp review, unless the food is so good/I am so hungry that I inhale everything before I even think twice. So...that happened here, lol. Motomaki is a fast casual Japanese eatery, with poke bowls and sushi burritos. Totally up our alley. We were starving and about to head out to the airport when we stumbled on this place. We shared a shrimp tempura bowl, which was quite literally one of the best things we ate in all of Denver. Every ingredient tasted fresh, well seasoned/sauced, rice was cooked correctly...it was just a really lit bowl of food. One of the few times when I've wished I had ordered my own instead of sharing, haha. Also, FWIW: they have Japanese curry sauce here. I love this place. I have had their sushi burritos as I am addicted, however this time I opted for a build your own bowl and I was impressed! I ordered 2x fish (both poke salmon and poke hamachi), rice, lettuce, daikon and carrots, cucumbers, avocado, and spicy aioli (siracha mayo.) So good!! I highly suggest the build your bowl function you get so much more! I would probably double the sauce next time, and ask that they cut the cucumbers as they are slightly too big for bite size portions. Phenomenal. It reminds me of hawaiian poke bowls but a little more upscale. I also really like that there are choices of marinated fish, it really kicks the flavor profile up a notch. The brand of sodas they have on fountain tap are great too, I highly suggest the root beer. I can't wait to go back, I'm hooked. I should add that I walked in about 30 minutes to close and was greeted, served and treated well as the crew members cleaned up and did their closing duties. OMG, the sushi-rito has come to Golden, Colorado. When you actually see the portion sizes served at Motomaki, you would be surprised in a good way. The bowls and the sushi burritos are both very filling. As a tip, you should definitely try to come during Happy Hour. The burritos and bowls are both $3 cheaper. This makes quite a difference. Happy Hour occurs Sunday-Wednesday from 3-5 PM. I would describe Motomaki as a Japanese themed Chipotle. There are menu options that are pre-determined, but you can also make your own burrito/bowl with any of the available ingredients. I usually make my own bowl because I'm pretty particular in what I like. In my opinion, you might get more food with a bowl than a burrito. Whenever I order my bowl, they always give me huge portions. They include big portions of the protein you might order. If you get raw sushi salmon, expect a lot of it. Honestly, the things you like in your bowl/burrito will depend on your personal preference. But, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the ingredient options. Everything seems very fresh. If you are looking for a healthy, quick meal option, I would definitely recommend Motomaki. It's fast, easy, and relatively inexpensive (depending on what you get). read more

The amount of options is great and unique there were a few items in my bowl i felt I had never tried before and paired amazingly with the rice and fish. Highly recommend giving them a try. This is my favorite post hiking meal! It's hearty, but not too heavy. The sushi burritos are so cool and they're always an amazing explosion of flavor. You can make your own burritos and bowls at Motomaki, but I would recommend ordering off the menu. It's a better value, and they know what they're doing. Their bowls with rice are their largest option if you're really hungry! I like to do the bowls with greens so that my meal is a little lighter. It's still so much food, but it tastes great. Order the eggplant - it's always amazing! I also like the shrimp tempura. You can't really go wrong. They'll include wasabi and ginger to go with your meal, which is a nice touch. If you like mochi ice cream, you can add some to the end of your meal. If you're looking for a light delicious meal, don't miss Motomaki. Bowls are not work the price. I ordered the Hamachi bowl... there was at most 1/2 cup of tuna, probably closer to a 1/3rd. 3 skinny asparagus spears and raw onions instead of crispy. Majority of bowl was rice. I got a mix with greens and they couldn't even properly split it 50/50. Not $15 worth of food; for half that would have been OK. I dropped by this place for dinner during my trip to Colorado. I enjoyed my customized poke bowl; the fish and veggies were fresh and the rice wasn't dried. My favorite appetizer was the soft shell crabs. Service was quick. Customers can choose to order at the register which was protected with a clear plexiglass shield or at the kiosks. I do love me some good sushi. Problem is, it tends to be expensive and I'm a pretty big eater. I want to a burrito sushi place in Vegas a couple years ago and thought it was a great idea. Unfortunately, Denver cuisine seems to be a few years behind the times for things like this. When I found out about this place, I was excited to give it a try. Just wish there was one closer to me. Anyway, I finally made it here and decided to try their Hawaiian salmon poke roll. The role is a good size (basically the size of a typical burrito) Pretty creative for sushi as it includes bacon. My one complaint is that it wasn't wrapped very well. The seaweed wrap is torn making it even more messy than it should be. Overall the taste is good. Not sure if I would continue to try one of their recipes or make my own. Either way, it's good eats for a pretty reasonable price. I also respect their attempts to be pretty environmentally friendly as they use real plates and there seems to be very little to dispose of afterwards. The little things do matter. Sushi burritos - who'd a thunk it. But kudos to whoever did - a truly great concept. Except, I actually prefer the bowl to the burrito, but you won't go wrong with either. So here's all you need to know about Motomaki. Burrito (also unceremoniously called a "big roll") or bowl? If burrito, what do you want it wrapped in - nori or soy paper? (Go with the nori.) If bowl, white or brown rice or greens? (Go with brown rice.) Next, predefined or build your own? Given this option, I almost always build my own. But not at Motomaki - I love #3 - Hamachi Crunch Poke (Hamachi poke, grilled asparagus, spicy sprouts, crispy onion, tempura crunch, sriracha aioli, ponzu) - $12.75. If you build your own, fill out a menu with your choice of protein (20 to choose from including seafoods, meats and vegetarian options), "innards" (veggies) and sauces. Say yes to wasabi and ginger. Add a bowl of miso soup ($3.00 - very tasty). And a beverage - soft drinks, iced teas, hot and cold sake, beer and wine. Grab a bottle of jalapeno ponzu and take it to your table with you and splash some on top. As described above, you won't leave with change from a $20 or $25 bill - yes, somewhat more than run of the mill fast food. But, there are no golden arches at Motomaki and the proteins and ingredients are not inexpensive. For what you get, there is a fair "return on investment" - both on your wallet and definitely on your taste buds. If you've been to #poke, they're similar. But each still unique. And each still excellent. Don't make me choose - I'll just alternate between them - grateful for two really good and unique "poke" options out west. read more
