I almost had hope for an affordable sushi restaurant near my office. But eating in Soho, NY will always be stretching your money out no matter the place. This place has very good lunch special deals and appetizers, lots of potential. The part that disappoints was the freshness of the food. Granted I only ordered appetizers during my visit here because I needed rice and some side dishes to the lunch I brought to work. The rice itself, what I ordered was fresh white rice and I can see clearly how stale and decayed in color it was - light brown and not the healthy kind we substitute for lower glucose. And this was on the dry side. The Kani salad, had higher hopes because this is a dish where ingredients are always fresh. The side dish itself was so stale and not enough tempura crumbs or Japanese mayonnaise gave it a decent flavor makeover. Food not being fresh is a very important factor in any restaurant. This definitely needs work. And would improve more foot traffic in this place. With all the shoppers in the Soho area, it's a good location for hungry goers. Stopped here before playing a show at Bowery Electric. They serve alcohol on-site, so we kept it simple with 'Kirin Ichiban.' Small to Medium sized venue (based upon your own opinion), mellow music playing, & friendly staff. We had the Spicy Tuna roll, which is a basic roll, but still very good. Specialty rolls we had the Dragon Roll, Prince Roll, & Festival Sakura Roll. All were very very good. This is place is too random for me to say I'll be back, but I WOULD come back if in the area looking for sushi again. Very good experience, very good sushi. The naruto rolls tasted nice and I recommend them with spicy mayonaise. The Inaka Chicken ramen was the best ramen I have ever tasted in my life. The chicken was seasoned well and all the other elements in the ramen soup added up. The service was good. The waiter asked us 2 minutes later right when we sat down what we wanted. The service is very fast. The environment I would say is very aesthetic. There were old style chinese paitings, hanging leaves, and an aquarium. Also the music was very good. Sushi Lunch Special review - I would highly recommend this as it is probably one of the most affordable sushi lunch spots in town - for 3 rolls to cost about 16 dollars, before tax and tip. So I ordered a variety - to sample their fishes and selection. I had the miso soup - classic version, quite yummy. Salmon Skin sushi roll - also a good one, definitely worthwhile. The skin was crunchy, paired well with the rice and sauce. Overall was on par with the classic roll. Spicy Tuna roll, instead of the spicy mayo on top, they mixed the spicy sauce and some crunchy (probable panko) into the mix, overall decent. I would have liked it without the hidden panko. Eel and avocado - this was a bit sadder, there was much much more avocado than eel - but still decent. This may have been my least favorite of the option I had there. Definitely would stop in for the lunch special, but nothing that is an absolute must-visit location. Although if you are looking for some decent cheap sushi rolls for lunch - it is worthwhile to stop in! read more

The outdoor aesthetic was very nice (a modern yet rustic setup) and we were given menus and water within the first few minutes of sitting down. We decided to try the Japanese style fried chicken. The portion wasn't bad (photo doesn't show but you get about 8-9 pieces). It was fried very well but lacked flavor and seasoning. The sauce pairing (spicy sushi mayo?) was a great choice, and it added some flavor back to the dish. When it came time to pay and leave, we had to wave/gesture for someone inside to attend to our table. There was only one other table dining on the other side, so crowd/being busy wasn't the case. Overall, this place isn't on my list of spots to visit again, simply because fried chicken is a pretty straightforward menu item but it wasn't seasoned well, and that makes me hesitant to try a more complex dish from here. read more

Decor is quite bland, nothing exciting or eye catching. Service had to be the worst aspect of this place, I came in by myself during my lunch break and sat at the sushi bar. It took them 15 minutes to just bring over the menu I had to ask the sushi chef about 3 times. If the place was packed I would have been more understanding but it was just me and two other tables in the place. On to the food, it was just okay. Nothing super amazing or that stood out. Just a boring, can find anywhere bento box. Tempura was super crunchy though so that was enjoyable. The rest was just okay. Ok it's official, this will be my new go-to sushi spot!! We ordered 2 lunch special rolls (12-4pm): spicy salmon and salmon avocado and 1 special roll: dancing eel avocado. Each individual piece was HUGE and stuffed, fresh, and delicious. The spicy salmon was not dry, it had a good amount of spicy Mayo in it! Lunch meal comes with miso soup or salad. For dessert, we got tempura green tea ice cream. It's similar to deep fried ice cream but with a thicker batter! They take cash or card. Very pleasant staff, affordable meal, all hidden on a quiet street. This whole meal (3 rolls, 1 soup, 1 dessert) is enough for 2 ppl, maybe even 3 depending on your appetite haha! I've had both very good and very bad experiences with this place so it's honestly a toss up every time my roommates and I order sushi from here. It's good because it's one of the lesser expensive sushi places we order from but that's balanced by sometimes it's pretty disappointing. Maybe I'm just weird when it comes to sushi who knows!! So I opted for my friends and I to try a new Japanese restaurant - Mottsu. We made a reservation in advanced since we had a party of 12-13 people. We started off with some appetizers since most of us were hungry and than later worked our way to the sushi. Crispy tuna with wasabi avocado sauce -- This was one of the appetizers we had that truly captivated me. I'm not a huge fan of tuna and still becoming accustomed to raw and seared fish, but I've got to say this was a good choice. It was crispy on the outside and smooth on the inside. Very tasty indeed. Kani Salad -- Excellent and loved how there were panko bread crumbs sprinkled over the salad. Popcorn Shrimp - lacked flavor, but came with a tartar sauce to dip with Grilled Squid with Teriyaki Sauce - The squid was cooked to the right texture and was tasty especially when smothered with the teriyaki sauce Other appetizers that were ordered was the sauteed tilapia over spinach with lemon sauce, miso soup, and a special order of Tuna lover. We all ordered a bunch of random sushi rolls to share. I certainly cannot remember all of the rolls we had, but these are the ones I do remember: Boston roll, sweet potato roll, spicy calamari roll, spicy salmon roll, Salmon Don, dragon roll and a lot more. The platters of sushi were beautifully decorated and presentable! Since we spent over $300 dollars at Mottsu and we had a large party, we were given a complimentary dessert. How sweet of them! We had a fried cheese cake tempura. It was amazingly delicious. Everyone was just digging in since we didn't have forks, but it was okay. After one of my colleagues had a bad meal from our usual Japanese delivery spot, someone suggested that we try Mottsu. I had never heard of the place, but was willing to give it a shot. The menu was rather diversified and included a large number of lunch specials. In addition, they allowed customers to essentially create their own sushi rolls by switching to brown rice and/or soy paper, adding different sauces, etc. Keep in mind, though, that each tweak came with an added fee. However, since someone else was footing the bill, then I guess I could tolerate it! My appetizer portion of Portobella Mushroom Teriyaki was decent, but the sauce was very watery and had even leaked out of the container and into the bag, ugh. I ordered my Dragon Roll with both brown rice and soy paper. I found the eel to be fresh and flavorful, but the brown rice was very mushy, so each piece began to unravel as I lifted it with my chopsticks. Basically, the delivery was fast, and the food was enjoyable enough. My complaints would be the price and the messy presentation, though that might have been due to the fact that my food was delivered rather than consumed at the restaurant. read more

I learned of this place because my sister have always wanted to try the sushi tacos here however, we came at noon and couldn't pass up the lunch special offer. I ordered my usual Spicy Salmon, Spicy Tuna and we also ordered a Special Roll called 'Giant Crispy Roll' to share. My brother and I LOVED the special roll, which was lightly fried to perfection. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen and an avocado/cucumber sushi roll with seaweed on the outside. First off, the ramen was EXTREMELY horrible. I am talking, bland water broth, no flavor and super oily. Second, the noodles were cold and very chewy, seemed poor quality and the sliced pork was so disturbing to look at it, I just took off my bowl entirely. Third, how can you screw up a simple sushi roll; well, I will inform you. The roll wasn't even rolled!! Everything was barely put together. Super disappointing.
