Sat for 15 minutes while the glass of wine I ordered never arrived and the food I ordered sat sitting, while servers did everything but their actual job. Restaurant was not busy at all. Then at the end the server had the audacity to actually ask me about tip, stating that there's a minimum tip. (??!!$ (I still tipped just very little). I am the archetype of a Myers Briggs "E" - I draw my energy from the people around me. I rarely dine out alone and I sure as hell won't go to see a movie alone. I grew up in a household where I ate dinner with my entire family every night then graduated to meals in the dining hall with college buddies then on to life as a young professional where eating out with friends is a staple of social life. I equate enjoying food and meals with family and friendship. But today I was hankering for some sushi and no dining partners were to be found. Damn the cravings of a food baby pregnancy! I came to Mottsu all by my lonesome to try out the lunch deals. $12 for 6 piece sushi, 6 piece tuna roll and choice of miso soup or salad. The fish was fresh but not of spectacular quality. The cuts of fish on the nigiri was generous - most places would have cut the lengthy portions in half and called it two pieces. The miso soup tasted a little funky - I couldn't figure out where the hint of citrus was coming from. The lunch deals are nicely priced - $13 chirashi, assortment of bento boxes for $11-13, $12 8-piece sashimi lunch. For some odd reason, I had an insatiable craving for sushi/Japanese on 12/02 (was it because it was the first snow of the season?) that I went on the hunt for some good Japanese food. 1st choice: Blue Ribbon on Sullivan St. Kitchen closed. Omen? Kitchen closed. Monster Sushi? Where is it?!?! Suffice to say, I tried my luck and headed to Mottsu. And...it was OPEN! (Yay!!!!!). Note: I love sushi but I don't want to fill up on just one thing (Katsu-don, udon soup, etc.) so I like to order one roll and 2 or 3 different appetizers (you get to taste the range of the restaurant.). So I sampled the Japanese mushroom tempura (YUMMY!), a blue fin sashimi (medium toro), a Sapa sashimi (Mackeral), Japanese eggplant grilled with miso paste (Salty!!! - although that's probably because of the miso), and the spicy calamari roll (YUMMY!!!!!). All in all, Mottsu was a good choice and service was excellent (then again, I was only 1 of 4 customers in the whole place at 4pm on a Sunday) but it isn't Blue Ribbon or Sushi of Gari because I only sampled 2 sashimi's. Overall suggestion: if you're in the area and want some japanese food, Mottsu is an excellent option. read more

I hate to splash all over this love parade (or do I?) but Mottsu is so "meh", I almost just want to steal the 2-star rating line verbatim. Every time I've come here for lunch with co workers I leave sorely disappointed. It's such mediocre food. The only plus is that it's pretty cheap, but when the food is no good, I'd rather grab a $2 or $3 slice of pizza than have a lunch special that includes miso and a salad or whatever. My specific gripes with the food are that the fish doesn't taste very fresh and the sushi rice is always off, whether it has too much vinegar in it or it's too hard or soft. After being turned away from Tomoe because they ran out of fish last night (I swear I'll eat at Rao's before that place--there's ALWAYS an excuse there), my girlfriend and I vowed to eat at a new sushi place last night. So bypassed our usual places by my place and ventured down Houston to Mottsu, where she'd been back in the day. We were thrilled to find it half-empty, but still very inviting. The decor is about average, but they have a huge wrap-around sushi station so you can watch the guys work their magic. Everything here is really good, better than most places. All of the fish seemed really fresh. Even basics like edamame seemed a little more flavorful than the usual. They have huge selection here, especially vegetarian rolls, and sushi. I enjoyed their take on Tuna tartare, but my favorite was their signature Tiger Roll, seared salmon over a spicy tuna roll. Even my usual Philly roll and salmon avocado were really good. The only drawback is that the prices are a touch higher than the usual; think somewhere between your usual sushi joint and Haru. read more

I used to really like this place. I live in the neighborhood and used to go there a lot. I went the other night for the first time in a few months, and it was pretty bad. The fish was okay at best. The agedashi tofu tasted like old oil had been used. It didn't taste fresh and was very greasy. The service is horrendous (always been kind of bad but I sucked it up because the food was decent and it's close by). Service is even worse now. Japanese food is one of my favorite cuisines and I've been to many Japanese restaurants within my lifetime. Sadly this place just didn't cut it, It's a small and humble space but my brother and I were the only ones eating here towards the end of our meal. It looks like they do a lot of take-out orders, but honestly their food was mediocre, and not as good as I was hoping. The mushroom soup I got was served lukewarm, the Dragon Roll was small and you could tell the ingredients weren't very fresh. The handroll, salmon and avocado, had the salmon sliced in cubes (it's supposed to be thinly sliced) and two feeble strands of avocado. My brother's Nabe Yaki Udon was redeemable, but overall below average food. There are a lot of better places than this one, especially in New York. Was fairly disappointed and had to pay more than what I wanted, not coming back anytime soon. read more

I was in the area with a sushi craving and passed by Mottsu and figured I give it a shot. In hindsight, I should just stick to the places I know. Opted for a lunch special and got two rolls: spicy tuna and shrimp tempura. Underwhelming to say the least. You don't get that many pieces per roll and, luckily, you can't screw up a shrimp tempura roll so that was decent; however, the spicy tuna roll didn't taste fresh. They also cut the tuna poorly, leaving tons of fat (white lines) in the roll which makes it a lot more chewy than it should. Service was slow as well for an empty dining room. Also, the sushi bar is oddly designed. You'd want the sushi bar at least at eye level for observation purposes. The sushi chefs with a minimal language barrier can also converse with guests and answer any questions. At Mottsu, you're staring into marble and the sushi chefs kind of tower over you. Not really intuitive. I would overlook all of my gripes if the food was on par, but that wasn't the case. Won't be returning. read more

There are much better places to get REAL Japanese cuisine than Mottsu~~~ This place was a joke. The fish was not fresh at all, and the cooked dishes we ordered were way over cooked and salty I used to live in japan and have worked for a Japanese sea food distributor, and i have to say the quality is sub par. I have had better stuff at sushi buffet places on Long Island. We ordered: Sushi & Sashimi Combination, mott roll, prince roll, pork katsu, gyoza,Grilled Miso Marinated Black Cod, Crispy Soft Shell Crab, Japanese Style Fried Chicken (kara age),Grilled Squid, and Agedashi For people who don't know what to look for in sushi, i would recommend turning your taste-buds on and try to actually taste your food. If it is bland, dry, and hard to swallow.....it should be in the trash. Sorry to sound like a sushi snob, but im just trying to put the warning out there. This place was a warm refuge from the cold and snow when we were visiting NYC. They took our umbrellas, provided hot tea to warm us up, and gave us hot washcloths to clean our hands. When my friends and I want a fun, inexpensive, tasty meal with no fuss or frills before going out - this is where we go. I order delivery from here regularly too and it's usually great. I will say they get my order slightly wrong quite a bit, but the food is always fresh and I've never had a problem with the actual taste or quality of the food (unlike other sushi restaurants in the LES -- don't ever order from AAA Ichiban... inedible). Oh my God. Being the health/food freak that I am, I know that sushi/japanese cuisine is generally a good way to get a filling, fresh, and reasonably healthy meal. Mottsu was so good!!! I had a squash roll, which I had never had before, and I tried their specialty Nolita Roll, which had roasted red pepper, black olives, and garlic. HOLY CRAP I would go again, and again, and again! I look forward to trying some of their other specialties as well (grilled portobello roll anyone?) Could get a bit pricey, but YUM! read more

Great lunch spot. I was born and raised in Tokyo. I went to the best fish market in the world, Tsukiji in Tokyo to eat sushi. I know how to make great sushi at home without spending a lot of money. Whenever I go out to eat sushi, I feel sushi business is making a great profit. Sometimes I can not justify myself to pay so much for small portions. I was pleasantly surprised by my lunch at Mottsu. I thought that all of the tiny, hole-in-the-wall, no-frills, inexpensive restaurants had been driven out of Soho...but it's not true! We walked into Mottsu at noon with a group of 8, and we were seated right away. There weren't many tables, but luckily, there was only one couple in the restaurant at that time. The menu was extensive, the service was speedy, the portions were big, and the food tasted like it was much more expensive than it was. I've been to Mottsu several times for lunch and a couple of times for dinner. The prices are reasonable and the sushi has been consistently fresh. The lunch specials are great. What I like about Mottsu are their choices beyond the standard tuna and salmon. I ordered the Omikase for dinner and it came with a lot of sushi fish I've never heard of. My friend was convinced that I was getting the remmants/leftovers of things unwanted but I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious it was. I still like tuna and salmon like everyone else but once in a while, it's great to have a chef choose for you and move beyond the standard fare. My experience with sushi in NYC is that it's either cheap/mediocre or vastly overpriced which inevitably results in my thinking the food was mediocre even if it was actually pretty good. This small, basic sushi joint falls prey to the latter - the food is quite tasty (faves include the shumai & the special chef's sushi selections, specifically the seared tuna with ponzu and the white fish), but I've never gotten out of there paying less that $40 without booze. I am (sadly) cheap unless the food at a given sushi spot blows me away, and it just doesn't here. It's good. That's it. Points for being the perfect place to have a dinner alone with a book. It's quiet, service is prompt and thorough, and while the decor is basic, it's pleasing as a periphery background scene to whatever trashy music industry book I happen to be reading at the time. It's too bright, though. Delivery is perfectly acceptable when I feel like forking out the $50. Probably as good as sushi delivery is going to get. Hit up this small joint in Soho on a Thursday afternoon around 130 or so. The lunch rush had just ended, and there were a handful of tables to choose from. Chose the table farthest from the door (as the wind gust of 20 below were chilling the place each time a patron entered or left). There are a handful of 5 stars, some 1 stars - a real mixed bag of reviews. Wasn't sure what to expect. Overall, service was good. Food was fantastic. The dumplings were to die for here. I had the chicken teriyaki with miso soup and a California roll. All tasty as can be. The others had ramen and noodles. I sampled both, both on point. If you're looking for some Asian and in Soho - highly recommend. To top it off, there was one of the Victoria Secret Angels having lunch 2 tables over from us. I guess that's not too uncommon when you're in Soho though. Peep it if you're around the area. read more

altho the portions are on the smaller side, the sushi is very fresh and the quality you would expect for the price. the waitress gave us tako wasa when i ordered wasabi tobiko, but honest mistake and we ended up with the tako wasa on the house. it all worked out because it was amazing - great consistency and so fresh. then, they gave us jalapeno tobiko in place of wasabi tobiko, so we ended up returning it. but the waitress was very pleasant throughout - to the point whr we were able to overlook the mistakes and still have a very enjoyable evening. she also gave us dessert on the house. read more

I liked my lunch just fine. S & I got the chirashi and a chicken udon to share, and we left with our bellies just full enough to feel full without needing to be rolled out. The chirashi was good, though the sushi rice was a little too vinegary for my tastes, the tamago (sweet egg) was just a little too sweet, the octopus was tough, and the tuna connector tissue was a bit stringy. That said, there was plenty of fish and I was extremely happy with the salmon and the seared hamachi (I think?). $13 isn't a bad price, but I prefer the uni, fish, and veggies over sushi rice served at Village Yokocho better, and I think that was only $9 or so. As for the udon, it totally hit the spot, but it hit the spot in the same way that a package of frozen udon hits the spot, though they did add some odeng and slices of overcooked chicken. I guess it was good, but I felt like it was of a quality that I could have made it at home myself. If only I had a full kitchen at work... read more

My local sushi fave is nothing special, but it works - here's why: Service - There is excellent service here. They are overstaffed so that every customer has ample attention. Pick-up ordering is very efficient, and they serve you water while you wait. Sushi - I've tried only the sushi, and I've always enjoyed it. Everything is fresh, it's just not enough for an avocado roll to cost $5.50... The Spider and Dragon rolls are standard, but over $10. The shrimp tempura was realllllly overdone when I tried a roll with that :( They do have a few unique rolls like the Mott Roll, which is fun. Ginger and wasabi are fresh to death. Prices - it's waayyyy overpriced compared to other local establishments, hence the 3-star rating. However, I think if I were to take advantage of the lunch special, things would be different. read more

Randomly stopped here for dinner on a Friday night and was pleasantly surprised. First off, service makes all the difference in the world to me.. and the server we had was so over the top accommodating and helpful I would come back here just because of him. As for the sushi, they had a lot of great rolls.. the fish was fresh and tasty. Trust the servers here if they recommend something.
