The most under-equipped and under-maintained facility ever! ~90 degrees Fahrenheit, no cooler, just one refrigerator in the whole ranch for all guests, out of order swimming pool. False advertisement about swimming pool, sulphur spring (not even accessible!). Very old beddings: fade colors, wrinkly,... All shades were broken. Every where in the dining and entertainment rooms were so dusty. Two stars just for acceptable breakfast and clean bathrooms. You can easily entertain kids with ranch animals somewhere else! read more

It's your choice, your money and this is NOT A BAD REVIEW only know that when you arrive at Mountain Home Ranch you are meant to disconnect and be off the grid and you will have the BEST TIME EVER! A family, friendly owned and operated property that takes you back to the 70s literally. It's like stepping back in time, where everything is exactly as it was in the 1970s from the decor to the dilapidated park benches, what's left of the tennis court, the '2nd' BIG empty pool or the overgrown grassy volleyball court and don't get me started on the rickety lovers overlook that literally caused your heart to skip a beat for fear of tumbling down over the side. The curtains/blinds leave no privacy for changing your clothes, keeping the sun out or possible other guests peering in - OH MY! If you just remember you're in a cabin that's a step above camping with a wonderfully home cooked breakfast to greet you every morning, then you've found your getaway. There's 200+ beautiful acreage, that you can hike, explore while finding their hidden gem of redwood groves and natural outdoor hot spring tub to soak in and you can bring fido (our doggies had a blast) or fish the small lake while you use one of their paddle boats and HEY the 1st pool that's closest to the main lodge is heated, clean and well maintained plus you can always grab a carrot or two to take out to the horse, donkeys and goats to have them nibble right out of your hand. The road to get here is much to be desired (long, windy and no lights at night) but if you're looking to get away from the city and disconnect from everything you have definitely found your spot. FYI you'll still need to have a dinner and lunch because neither are served or offered here, they had dinner one night, Friday night, but no other night, we stayed until Sunday day. But for the cost we opted to go to Calistoga it was BBQ chicken and Tri-tip, grilled veggies and garlic bread for $30 per adult/$16 per child, no drinks included. Bring an ice chest to keep water and drinks plus bring snacks and stuff (napkins, plates, etc) you'll thank me later. You may want to get a mud bath, massge or spa treatment and/or wine tasting or shop not a problem it's literally down the hill - you can still disconnect and have Napa/Calistoga too. This is my 2nd visit, doing a workshop at Mountain Home Ranch. I just love the ranch with all the trails, the wonderful food and getting to feed the horses and goats. John & Suzanne are wonderful sharing all their stories over the years. Their family is wonderful too, as well as the rest of the staff. Their Ranch has been in the family for 100 years and the family agreed to keep it another 100 years. :) Your in the woods and yes, the cabins are rustic, wifi is intermittent ... I love it. I came here on a family reunion. I guess the best way to describe this resort is... rustic. The cabins were reminiscent of junior high school science camp. The facility had a few meeting rooms, a pool, live animals where you could feed and some hiking trails. I would say basically it would be between more "civilization" than camping out in the woods and beneath motel 6 (the one where you can hear someone getting laid down the hall since the walls are really thin). Pro's: - Really great for big groups to all "camp" out together - Provides food in a dining hall which is nice - Able to feed the horses and goats which is interesting - Wifi all over the camp. Weird you can't get reception but you can facetime... Con's: - Not much to do on resort. Most of the facilities are super run down - Food was really expensive. Meal per person was about $21. Food was absolutely crap. Then again some of my party loved how the greens were hand picked down the street. That's fine if it was $11 per person, but for $21... - A little expensive for what your really paying for... Comments: It's rustic. The staff can be nice depending on who you speak to. read more

I'm low maintenance and I don't mind funky/rustic accommodations but dirty is unacceptable. 1) I felt the sheets were not clean. They were brown so you know they weren't bleached and no way to know if they really were clean. 2) Inside the cupboards looked like they hadn't been cleaned in months. 3) Mold in the shower. 4) Broken blinds and screen door 5) Swimming pool looked more like a pond. Its so sad that the owners have let it get run down. I appreciate that they are trying to provide affordable accommodations in Napa valley but i would be happy to pay a little more for a clean environment. They need to call Hotel Impossible and get on the show read more

Buyer beware -- the owner John is a dishonest guy who may switch your room (regardless of your reservation confirmation), and not tell you about it unless you figure it out for yourself. Read more below... On March 11th I made a reservation via phone with John (the owner) for a 2-bedroom cottage for June 11-13, 2010. I explained on the phone that we have 2 couples and will need a 2-bedroom. John was helpful and confirmed over the phone, and then in writing via a handwritten Reservation Confirmation sent via mail, that we did indeed reserve a cottage. The cottage description in the brochure and online is "each cabin has a kitchen, fireplace, private bathroom". When we checked in at 10pm on Friday night (June 11th), the office was unattended, but we found an envelope with our name on it and a key inside. We found our cabin named Love, and discovered, much to our dismay, that it was not a cottage at all, but rather a cabin which is described in the brochure and online as "assortment of beds, private bathroom". This cabin was basically 1 large room with a total of 6 beds in it and a bathroom. Not the kind of place where you want to stay with 2 couples (aka no privacy). On our reservation confirmation John wrote "cottage", since that is what I had reserved. The cottage is billed at $194/night for 4 people (which John confirmed during our phone conversation), while the "cabin" which we were unknowingly switched into is billed at $159/night for 4 people (based on MHR's published prices online and in the brochure). Conveniently, John failed to mention the switch, or any corresponding reduction in price. Ultimately, we quickly left on Friday night, found other accommodations nearby, and returned on Saturday morning to explain the situation. I was very polite when I presented our problem to John, and I was taken aback when he acted very shady during the conversation and actually left mid-sentence and disappeared to go finish washing dishes! Can you imagine, you dupe your customer, they come to discuss their problem with you, and you don't even give them more than 20 seconds to discuss the problem! This is one of the most unethical private ranch/hotel/B&B owners I've ever seen. John's flippant attitude, bait-and-switch tactics, and disrespect shown by not giving me the time of day during our conversation have appropriately earned Mountain Home Ranch my 1-star review. I'll be monitoring my credit card over the next few days to make sure he doesn't try to sneak any charges on me. I'm considering filing complaints with the Better Business Bureau and the Napa Tourism Bureau. Caveat emptor. read more

If it wasn't for the amazing friends we spent the weekend with, this establishment would get zero stars-- dilapidated cabins and unkept property. The shower head was so crusted with lyme scale that water barely forced through pin holes like lasers, making showering very unpleasant. When making reservations with the owner on the phone, I felt rushed like he didn't have time to speak with me about the accommodations. I had to force answers out of him and then when we arrived, we found that nothing was consistent with his initial representations of the cabin. During our stay, we learned that another couple were promised our cabin with the kitchen and were switched to a cabin without a kitchen without notice. All of our friends arrived with food and we had to end up sharing our kitchen with this other couple so they could feed their baby. Food in our tiny refrigerator spoiled because the refrigerator did not function properly causing us to have to throw the food out. We were never told that the two bedroom cabin only had one jack and Jill bathroom which made it awkward for two couples to share for a whole entire weekend. During our stay, the owners horses broke lose and he and his wife had to run around to catch them by the dilapidated tennis courts as the horses ran through areas where children were playing and other guests were eating. Their tap water is brown and I wouldn't drink it under any circumstances. I could go on and on......it is apparent that these owners have a complete disregard for the safety and comfort of their guests. read more

I love this place! I've come here for two retreats and have another planned in July. The food is really good and they're super accommodating to gluten-free/vegans/vegetarians (I'm not one, I just appreciate the option.) I love all the animals and I took full advantage of the gorgeous hiking trails. I didn't have much in the way of interactions with the owners but my impression was that they were very accommodating to the varied and complex needs of such a large group. Accommodations are pretty basic (I stayed in Peace with a few roommates) but comfortable and clean. read more

This poor place was probably charming and rustic 30 years ago. Today it is just plain run down. The surrounding terrain is beautiful. The owners are very welcoming. However the sad little cabins, lodge and swimming pools are in dire need of an overhaul. The pools look decayed. Banana peels, used plastic cups and other random items were strewn about the poolside. The cabins are clean, but dilapidated. The interior carpets in our cabin were worn and stained. The adirondack chairs on the porch were rickety and uncomfortable. The screens in the windows were useless. All the linens should be thrown out and replaced. We went up with another family and our toddlers for a weekend. The kids loved the farm animals. The homecooked breakfast was wonderful. They no longer cook other meals in the lodge so you need to drive into town (which is just 10 minutes away) for lunch and dinner. If the place were updated, we would return regularly. The idea of it is great, but the actual experience is disappointing. For the price we paid, we'd rather stay in the tent cabins up in Toulomne Meadows or Yosemite. read more

If you are looking for a luxurious 5-start spa/wine country getaway. This place is NOT for you. We stumbled upon this little gem this year while planning our vacation to Napa Valley. It is a very charming secluded B&B for those who would like to wonder, explore, and appreciate what nature has to offer. The ranch is little out of the way from the civilization, but it is actually 10 minutes away from Calistoga, 25 min (at most) from St Helena. We stayed in one of the cottages. The rate is very reasonable compare to other places we have stayed. The cottage is minimally furnished and very clean. We had a private bathroom (some cabins have a shared shower facility), a fire place that kept us very warm (in addition to the heater in the room), a tiny but fully equipped kitchen, and no tv to distract us (I believe that there are rooms with TV in the main lodge). The ranch has been run by the inn keeper, John, and his family for 3 generations (est 1913). He is very knowledgable about the land and the surrounding area. There are a lot to do and to see on the property alone (eg. look for 1000+ yr old redwood trees while hike down into the canyon). For those who are interested in the wine country, you can either go east to explore the Napa Valley wineries or head west to visit the Russian River Valley. The Pacific coastline is about two hours scenic drive away. The ranch is definitely kids and pets friendly. They have a small farm on the property where kids can feed and pet the farm animals. Keep the rustic nature of the ranch in mind, and you won't be disappointed. read more

This place is a GEM of a find and we're so lucky to have stumbled upon it. Every family we met was a repeat visitor, and I'm certain we will be as well! From reading prior reviews, it seems that others perhaps did not do their research. This is a rustic cabin outsoor setting. Amenities are perfectly adequate and as described: over a 100-year-old property in a continued state of upkeep. No AC in the cabins, but they provide fans. There is so much to do on the property for our kids, a 2-year-old and a 3-year-old: feeding the animals, hiking, playing in the creek, tennis and basketball court, paddle boats in the lake, swimming pool, game room, playing with all the dogs... it was endless! And if we wanted to leave the property, it was a 10 minute drive to Calistoga, and even shorter drive to the Petrified Forest which we really loved. We also took a day trip to Armstrong Woods (like Muirwood's but way better) and the beach. Hands-down, this was a perfect Labor day retreat for our family of four. We told our kids we were going "camping," but this sure beats packing tents and cooking your own food. Speaking of which, the FOOD! Unbelievable breakfast every day, and we paid for a couple dinners as well that were out of this world. We feel so lucky to a found this place and we are certain that we will be back with more friends and family in the future. I used to take my kids when they were very young and I recently revisited with my sisters; it has changed a bit from what I remember, but it was still a wonderful place to connect with nature and your friends and family. This is a family run business that has been operating for the past 100 years! The owners are incredibly accommodating and will delight you with their ranch history. It is rustic- but that is a HUGE part of the charm and quaintness. We have stayed here 4 times and always feel very refreshed when we leave. They have several options for rooms, room inside the main lodge, small cabin without bathroom, or larger cabins with restroom and kitchenette. The cabins are rustic and comfortable. All are in a wooded area with several hiking trails. Their organic breakfast is wonderful with homemade goodies. The SCONES!!!! One of the main reason's why we are consistently going back to visit. It is only 10 min. from Calistoga which is wonderful. We prefer to go in the fall when it is less crowded, but also love coming at the height of the season when they have artist groups milling about. They have 2 pools but they are not available after the summer. There are many farm animals and a vegetable garden. The horses are free to roam on the property at times, which is amazing! I love coming up here for a few days and can't wait for the opportunity to go again. read more

Maybe my expectations were too high from all of the good reviews I read, but this place definitely needs some work. It has the potential to be so much better, but it seems like the owners don't really care about making this place worthy of being called a "resort". It's cheap compared to other places in the area, but it was almost too rustic. We arrived late (10pm) and had trouble finding the place, as it is not very well marked. When we finally got to the main lodge, we went to the front desk and our keys were not there so we had to call the owner, who apologized and explained where the keys were kept. The "cottage" we stayed in was more like a cabin, and the "fireplace" was not really a fireplace, but a wood-burning stove. The carpet and curtains were faded and needed to be replaced. The skylight was covered in dirt and the bed sheets were stained. We couldn't figure out how to turn on the shower because the knob was stuck so we had to call the owner again. I was annoyed by the roosters at 5am, but that's what you get on a ranch I guess. Breakfast was pretty good (buffet of scrambled eggs with cream cheese and chives, homemade apricot scones with some warm marmalade sauce, heart-shaped pancakes with real maple syrup, bagels, cereal, Yoplait light yogurt, and fresh fruit). The milk was gone and no one was there while we were eating to ask for more, although the owner did ask us if we wanted him to cook us some more eggs when we saw him. (He apologized again for not having the keys ready). We ate in the lodge, which reminded me of a summer camp dining hall. We tried to go on a hike, but the map we were given wasn't very detailed and we couldn't figure out how to get to the trail. The swimming pool was empty. The tennis courts were not in any shape to be used. Basically we were stuck there without anything to do, which would have been fine if we were closer to civilization (about a 10 minute drive to the main roads). read more

If you read the reviews you'll get a feel for the place. Rustic, somewhat rundown, great breakfasts, lovely grounds for hiking and two pools for swimming. We booked a holiday weekend there in one of the "planet" rooms in the main lodge which ordinarily would have been fine. We understood it was not a hotel and was very camp-like. The grounds are gorgeous; lots of room for walking, feeding cows and goats etc and on another weekend we might have had a lovely time. Some issues arose once we arrived: * It was hotter than heck this weekend - in the mid 90's - and the lodge rooms do not have fans or even cross ventilation. We might have survived except - * There was a HUGE family reunion taking place at the time where the families had booked almost all the rooms and cabins and so there was NONSTOP screaming and yelling and drinking all day Saturday, till late into the evening. There were hordes of teenagers acting up - which to be fair, if I'd booked that many people I'd expect to take over the place as well. Not possible to use the heated pool; our only option was to walk through the woods to the cold pool where I was promptly bit by tons of mosquitoes. Not possible to eat in the dining room because the group had taken it over. * We had to call the owners on Saturday night, when its supposed to be QUIET TIME to say there were still loud parties all over the grounds We didn't get to sleep till after 11 and about 1 AM they started up again yelling and screaming. * The ranch is dog friendly but dogs are supposed to be on leash all the time. Well you can imagine how that went - I mean come on, if you go to a place that allows dogs you;re not going to do that SO as we sat out side trying to eat our takeout a huge dog came over and kept trying to snatch our chicken. When I shooed him away several times, and he refused to leave I yelled "Get away" and his owner got mad... Ordinarily I would chalk this up to bad luck but I had called and emailed the lodge before we booked, asking about comfort and relaxation, how comfy the beds were, the pool area, etc. and nothing was said about a large group. If you have a group that is so large they will be taking up almost ALL the common space and outdoor space and main room space (where they had set up a bar ion the porch, right outside our window) then you should tell prospective gusts. I understand the owners likely don't make much $$ from all this, and every room counts but this was beyond what any paying guest should experience. And the two other couples in our situation looked as miserable as we were. However, the reason I give a 3 star and not a one star - the owners were understanding that we were leaving early morning and NOT staying another night. Their solution was very fair and I commend them for their understanding. So stay here if you want a rustic, friendly experience but be aware of the drawbacks. read more

This place was fantastic. We stayed in the lodge and had a summer camp experience like you read about in books. There was hiking in redwoods to hot springs, a lake to swim in, a big swimming pool, a small warmer swimming pool. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. A meditation room, lemonade, two horses, a goat, a sheep, and a cow named Tiny that were all happy to be fed carrots at all hours of the day. I'm a fan of the Mountain Home Ranch resort. I've been coming here over the last 15 years, when it was recommended to me by a coworker as an affordable place to stay in Calistoga. It's true that it's rustic. It's true that it's charming. It's true that the owners are super nice, friendly, and accommodating. It's true that breakfast is delicious. I've hiked all of the trails. I've petted all of the animals. I've dipped in the natural warm spring on the property. I've used a paddle boat on the small lake. Yes, there are no TVs in the room, but there is pretty decent WiFi. Brought my current gf here for her birthday last weekend and had a romantic night stoking the fire in the wood-burning stove in our "cottage." You can't get such a wonderful, unique, and memorable experience at the Best Western or any of the fancy places around here that are charging double. Or more. read more

First, I had no idea of the existence of this magical place before the day I arrived. Sometimes I let the universe take the wheel and guide me to the places where I provide a shift or receive one. At Mountain Ranch in Calistoga, I was the one who received the shift. I pulled into the,long drive after dark. I was pleased as I opened the door of my accommodations to find a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with a separate intimate seating area surrounded by windows. I was exhausted having driven all day, but the incredible wonderful hot water in the shower rejuvenated me. I was soothed by the color palette of the room that complimented the sage bedding. I smiled when I saw the cherub bed shirt and accompanying extra blanket. I enjoyed a cup of hibiscus tea sprawled on the couch in front of a blaze in the wood burning stove. I felt warm, embraced by the love that the owners shared with their guests, evident by their hospitality and felt throughout my cottage. I woke the next morning at sunrise, renewed. I surveyed the grounds and was amazed by blooms at this late fall date. Yellow daisy-like flowers along with a couple of purple, possible lavender varieties still making their presence known. I walked around the immediate grounds spying a small collection of antique farm equipment retooled into planters and well established vines covering intimate and group seating areas. It reminded me of Kellerman's in the movie Dirty Dancing back in the day with small cottages surrounding a main house, but with a spiritual twist. Being from Sedona and a writer, I was looking for a peaceful inspirational environment to work on my latest book. Mountain Ranch certainly provided me with more than I could have imagined, a gem tucked away on 300+ acres, with its own hot spring, trails and labyrinth. I was instantly transported to a place of peace and bliss and the inspiration flowed. If you are looking for the typical 5 star homogenized pretentious fare, this may not be the place for you. If, however, you,want to feel at peace and walk their many trails gazing upon the serene mountains and experiencing the magic of their labyrinth, then I recommend that you take a look here. Overall: This place is unique, interesting, and fun, but could desperately use some serious improvements. We probably won't go back. Pros: - Beautiful grounds. You can hike on the trails and see some great views. It's fun to feed the cows and goats and visit the chickens. If you follow the trail to the sulfur springs you'll see redwoods and other interesting sights (pack shoes that you don't mind getting dirty!). - Homey feel. The dining hall and common spaces were cozy. They had a bunch of board games available, which we did one night. - Breakfast included. Good thing, because there are really no other options in the area. The food was fine; we especially loved the fresh fruit. - Unique experience. This feels SO far away from the rest of Calistoga and Napa Valley. You will have a very different experience. I could see it being great for a family that wants to get away and have lots of open space for their kids to run around. Despite the cons (below), we did have a fun time exploring and walking around. - Nice location. Close enough to the town of Calistoga and to many wineries, plus close to the Petrified Forest and the Geyser. But still you feel way out in the country and it's super quiet and relaxing. Cons: - Not very comfortable. Our beds were pretty terrible (I think I can say, without exaggeration, that these were actually the worst real beds I've ever slept on, though a step up from camping I guess). The sheets were worn thin with no elastic left. The pillows were terrible. Everything is OLD. - Very run-down. Every single building could use updating. There are too many things to list. Tennis net was sagging, pools were disgustingly dirty, trails are not marked, cabins let bugs in, furniture in common areas looks like it belongs in a frat house, etc. - Unreasonable rates. The rates listed on the website, even for a 2-bedroom cabin, are only for two people. Then they add $20 per person per night for every additional person! Who would book a cabin with four beds for just 2 people? Sorry, but the breakfast was not worth an extra $20 per person per day, and there is no maid service. Where is that money going? These prices would really only be reasonable if they did the updates that the camp really needs. - Unfriendly "customer service." We had 5 people staying in our cabin, but the 5th bed (a fold-out chair! ha!) was not folded out and had no sheets or pillows. We arrived pretty late, so we didn't want to disturb the owners, and waited until the next day to ask. They were not apologetic at all, and of course did not offer to refund us the extra $20 we paid for that person. I think just some sympathy/appreciation for not waking them up and a measly $20 would have made us feel a lot better about the situation. Instead they made us feel bad for asking for bedding! And tried to claim that we made a reservation for 4 (we checked in our email after we got home--nope, the reservation was for 5). Friendliness goes a long way with customer satisfaction. read more

I went there with 2 friends. We spent the day in wine country and we so excited to stay out in the mountains. The room was fine. The staff was rude. No one greeted us when we arrived. We picked up the keys in an envelope. The previous guests were still in the room when we tried to get in. We didn't complain because we are laid back and just trying to have a good time. We ran into the staff throughout the course of the evening and they were rude. When we left we turned in our keys to a woman at a desk that didn't ask us about our stay or even say goodbye. Im not sure if its because we are young (in our thirties) and without children but I've never been treated so badly. And to top it off they overcharged us after waiting almost 2 months to bill my card. It was disappointing becaue we were so excited to find a new spot. read more

My husband and I stayed here while we were visiting the Napa Valley area. We wanted a place we could bring our dog. We had a great experience here. It felt a little like going to summer camp. The grounds were very peaceful, and we enjoyed feeding carrots to the farm animals and walking through the gardens and hiking trails. The morning breakfast was especially enjoyable. It was quite a large spread with all kinds of delicious and healthy foods that were hand-made fresh in the kitchen, such as scrambled eggs with kale and garlic, french toast, pancakes, etc...My husband and I were a little late for breakfast, and the woman who was cooking was very sweet, and even went back in the kitchen and fixed up some more eggs and other items just for us. We come to Mountain Home Ranch every fall for the long weekend. Even though John and Suzanne are vegetarians they prepare a turkey for us. The kids swim in the heated pool - heated by a wood-burning furnace - and we play games in the lodge after dinner. Older people in our party stay in rooms in the lodge, families get cabins with a kitchen. I usually get a rustic cabin, and take cold showers in the bathhouse. The rustics have a toilet but no shower. This is a wonderful place to relax, hang out and get into the Northern California life. read more

DON'T BOOK HERE! Unethical people. I schedule a women's retreat here and had to cancel it when Suzanne, the owner, told us she had DOUBLE BOOKED. I tried to reason and work it out with her and she didn't offer to make it right, instead she was DEFENSIVE AND UNCOOPERATIVE. We had to cancel the retreat, disappointing over 30 women. We stayed in the Granma room with has a kitchen and a bathroom. But if you go there, don't expect to spend time in your room or cabin. Staying at this place is an adventure : they give you a map once you get there. There is a lot to explore : they have hot springs (you don't want go inside by the way but it is a marvelous walk), hike path, tennis ground, two swimming pools and a lake. You can really spend a lot of time on the property just having fun. It is a perfect place for a family or a group of friends. They even have two cows, goats and sheeps. They leave carrots in the dining room so you can feed them. Love it ! read more

This place is rustic, charming, simple and the perfect place to unwind. If you are genuinely looking for a change of scenery and to reconnect with nature, look no further. With over 300 acres of forested oaks, madrones, pines, manzanitas and even redwoods, it truly feels wild and magical here. Highly recommend this place, assuming this is what you are looking for. We had a long day in Napa and arrived late at night. Our room was Mercury and the first thing I noticed was the smell inside of the property (grease and musty) maybe it's because its and old house and I don't think has been updated. The room is just like the photo they have in their website but what you don't see the dirty sheets, grey mattress protector with hairs, death bugs and stains. The mattress had stains on it and the pillows smelled musky odor. In the bathroom you can see mildew in the sink, the shower head and in the shower doors and the towels had stains on them and didn't smell like clean towels. We have never been as disappointed as we were with this property. We expected rustic, but clean for $120. We didn't wait for the breakfast because we want to be out ASAP and if their sheets weren't clean, we couldn't imagine how the dishes and silverware are washed. It's a shame because the land was beautiful and has potential to be a great place to stay. read more

Very rustic place. If your kids are scared of insects, not a good place for you. Better maintenance of the tennis court, volleyball courts and the large swimming pool will make the place a lot better. Very good if you are going in a large group. We came with a group of 40 or so friends for a week-long NVC leadership workshop. The variety of accommodations really supported our varied needs. We so enjoyed the great food, much of which came from the land. The family has been on the land for several generations and their care shows. If you're expecting a resort, this is not the place... No one will wait on you hand and foot... But if you want a great place to be away from the city, hike around in the canyon, hang out with a few horses, cows, and goats, and just "chill," Mountain Home Ranch is a perfect place! read more

We recently stayed at their rustic cabin named Love after my sister-in-law recommended the place to us. We have two young kids and it was the ideal place for them. Though the accomodations were basic (a step up from camping), we were very comfortable. There was a lot to do. We spent time by the pool, hung out by their lake and took a boat out, hiked to the hot springs, and fed their animals. The owners were super friendly. Breakfast was yummy. I also got some jam to take home. Delicious. My husband called this place "camp for adults." Don't come expecting luxury but a place to relax and enjoy nature. We'll make this an annual family trip destination for sure!!! read more

It feels like they're inviting you to their home--which they essentially are. It was nice to be around farm animals and be in the woods. Since this is family-run, they don't have all the rigid corporate rules and aren't trying to constantly milk you for every last penny. This is the best-value place for a multi-night stay for a group of 30-60 that I could find. read more

I spent a week at Mountain Home Ranch, and loved it. It is gorgeous northern California terrain, with 340 acres of hilly tree- and trail-filled land to hike and explore, beautiful views, and comfortable rustic cabins in which to rest. The hosts are gracious and the food worthy of seconds and thirds. Cellular and wifi service is accessible in some areas (e.g. main lodge), though that's not what you're here for anyway, is it? Feed the rescue horses garden-grown carrots instead. read more

We have stayed here 4 times and always feel very refreshed when we leave. They have several options for rooms and we prefer the cabins with a kitchen. The cabins are rustic and comfortable. All are in a wooded area with several hiking trails. Their breakfast is wonderful with homemade goodies. It is only 10 min. from Calistoga so it is easy to go out for a good meal. It is a great place for large groups and kids. We prefer to go in the fall when it is less crowded. They have 2 pools but they are not available after the summer. There are many farm animals and a vegetable garden. The horses are free to roam on the property at times. We now have two young dogs that enjoyed running around and needed supervision. The staff was very patient with our wild young dogs. They were very accommodating and helpful in general. This is a family run business and the owners will delight you with their ranch history. Soon you felt like part of the family. read more
