Ma-Ma Hot Fish (Black Fish) 麻麻藤椒魚

6 of us came in on a Thursday when they opened around 12pm. I've been here once before but only remembered the food was spicy but tasted ok but expensive. the decoration is definitely high end, as is you've walked into a Chinese garden with fish pond and wood carvings everywhere. very beautiful. since one of our friend is a regular and loves this restaurant. she placed the order for all of us to share and mostly we've asked mild or less spicy. our favorite is the crispy fried pork intestines. THE best I've had ever. it's tasty, crispy, cleaned very well (not fatty inside) but not too spicy. The cauliflowers was also very popular as well. we loved every dish. Our only complaint is the shrimps were butterflied but not deveined so you can still see a black strip of vein on very piece of shrimp. we also ordered 2 different desserts and the waitress gave us an extra order of dessert as we were celebrating birthdays.

Came here on a late Friday afternoon to check this place out. As this place is known for its authentic Sichuan cuisine, when ordering dishes, make sure to check with the server on the level of spiciness of each dish to avoid any surprises. For appetizer, we ordered House Chicken (川山甲跳鸡) - poached chicken in chili sauce. A light and refreshing dish matches perfectly with the chilled chili sauce. Sichuan Double Cooked Pork (盐菜回锅肉). This was my favorite dish of the meal. Perfectly seasoned (simmered and stir-fried) thin pork slices (pork belly) with leek. Goes perfectly with steamed rice! Sautéed Chinese Long Beans with eggplant (豆角烧茄子). Stir-fried slices of eggplant with long beans. A great dish to balance out the spiciness and protein-rich dishes that you will be ordering. Ma-Ma Hot Fish (Black fish) - 麻麻藤椒鱼. A traditional sichuan dish with fish filets (black fish) cooked in green sichuan peppercorn oil (with plenty of fresh and dried Sichuan peppercorn). If you want a true and authentic taste of Sichuan dish, this is a must-have! This is one of the non-spicy dishes, with plenty of fish filets and a taste of citrus zing with a slight numbing flavoring. Resturant located in a well hidden plaza right behind a driving range. It only has one outlet street into/out of the plaza. Parking wise, the plaza parking can be very busy during dinner time and weekends. You can always drive around to the back of the plaza as there is a parking structure with plenty of spaces. Definitely worth checking it out when you want to experience authentic Sichuan cuisine!

3/5 vegan and vegetarian options available: I had Mountain House saved in Yelp since it opened and finally had the opportunity to visit on a Saturday night recently. It's beautiful inside, the food is all right, and the service was polite. I just feel that based on the value of the food and the options available, I wouldn't revisit at Mountain House again. My friends who are not vegetarian felt similarly. If you're going to try to be inclusive of vegetarian diets, market yourself as inclusive, then I'd hope the entrees would also reflect that same energy. The food and service: I'm fully aware that vegans and vegetarians are not the target demographic for this restaurant. That said, there are some options for those who are plant based, and thankfully, the staff were well versed in the options, so I wasn't jumping through hoops to try and figure out what was edible for me. I understand that this isn't the norm, so it was very much appreciated! What we were able to order was the snow peas with lotus, Ma Po Tofu (with modifications, removing meat), and Fried tofu (sauce on the side because it contains a meat element). My friends also ordered some other meat forward dishes (not pictured here). The staff were super sweet in communicating all of these modifications to the kitchen well. That said, none of us were blown away by the food. This spot feels very much an Instagram popular restaurant as opposed to some truly delicious Chinese food. My friends definitely have had better Chinese food at less pricy spots, and I've also experienced better vegetarian options at other Chinese restaurants nearby, so I likely wouldn't come back unless I felt like they tried to make real changes to the menu to include vegans and vegetarians more. However, if you're trying to impress some guests who don't have Chinese food often, this isn't a bad place to take them. The staff are communicative, the restaurant is beautifully decorated, and the kitchen can make modifications to dishes. Everything else: Parking can be a bit of a struggle at Pearl Plaza during peak hours, but if you keep driving down you might be able to still find a spot. Credit card is accepted. You can order food on an iPad but ring the staff for questions.

I've been to this restaurant twice, and the food quality has been consistently excellent. I had another wonderful dining experience here tonight! The presentation of the sliced pork belly with cucumber, served hanging on a wooden rack, was absolutely stunning and unique. It paired perfectly with the spicy dipping sauce underneath. The shredded potato was also fantastic, perfectly crisp, light, and full of flavor. The last time I had Sichuan Boiled Fish was delicious. The fish was fresh and tender, and the broth was rich, flavorful, and infused with the wonderful aroma of Sichuan peppercorns. Everything we ordered was delicious. The ambiance was cozy, and the service was excellent. Everyone who works here is friendly, welcoming, and polite. I'll definitely be back. Five stars!

I've was wanting to try this restaurant ever since one of my coworkers recommended it to me. The restaurant is beautiful with wooden pagodas and a fountain at the entrance. I ordered some of their most popular dishes including the swing pork belly, beef rib wraps, and chili prawns. Easy to submit order using a tablet and liked the pictures. The chili prawns were spicier than expected, but was flavorful. Standouts were the other two dishes, as they were both refreshing while having high quality and tender meat. I would definitely order both of those again. They unfortunately were out of their black sesame mountain shave ice dessert, so we went to miro mochi in the same center instead. Also got their snow peas for the veggie, which went well with the other dishes. Service was okay, they didn't check up on us much and we had to get our waitresses attention to ask for ice waters and for the check. Another small complaint was that the restaurant was quite warm as they shared that their AC unit was old. The food and ambiance definitely carried, and I would come back for another special occasion.

If you are craving authentic Szechuan cuisine, look no further than Mountain House in Rowland Heights. This restaurant is gorgeous and the food is absolutely AMAZING! It feels so relaxing when you're dining here - I cannot recommend this place enough. My favorite was the Lazi Chicken and their Mapo Tofu. The presentation for the Swing Pork Belly was beautiful but it wasn't what I liked best. The Steamed Fish was VERY fresh! Everything I ordered was all very good. The prices are inexpensive and you're also getting top notch service. Mountain House is a 10/10!

As always this place has a great ambiance for dates or family meals because of the interior design and decor. Now, they provide tablets making it easier to order. We got their mapo tofu (you need to order rice separately), braised beef and tripe (cold chili oil dish), and beef rice wraps. They sold out on braised pork belly but that is also one of my favorites. Mapo tofu is spicy but addicting, and the two beef dishes were very tasty. They will package your leftovers for you on request. This place is a fancy Chinese restaurant so it can get pricey, but the food is good, portions are better to share family style, and servers are always walking around if you need something.

Mountain House in Rowland Heights, CA is absolutely gorgeous as if you are stepping into a Chinese Palace. Details and atmosphere is impeccable that simply brings joy to your experience. You are being served the most authentic Chinese cuisine such as Sauerkraut Fish Soup, Peking Style Beef Short Ribs, Teppan Garlic Shrimp, Mapo Tofu, Eggplant & String Beans, Kung Pao Chicken and Beef Fried Rice. Now I wonder if the new San Gabriel location will live up to the Rowland Heights one?

    Evan L.

I've heard about this place for years and finally had the chance to try it. Definitely lived up to the hype. The interior was nice with a traditional Chinese vibe to it. Food was great. My personal favorite was the Pepper Beef Tongue.

    Eveline L.

If you're looking for bold Sichuan food with a great dining atmosphere, Mountain House is definitely worth checking out. The traditional interior decor is beautifully done and really sets the mood as soon as you walk in. The food itself is quite good and hits those signature spicy and numbing notes well. The Swing Pork Belly is a fun order mostly for the presentation, but the sliced pork and chili-garlic sauce definitely hold their own. The Fish In Sour Cabbage Soup is comforting--the broth strikes a nice tangy balance, and the fish was fairly tender. We also tried the Green Pepper Mao Xue Wang, which brought plenty of that authentic numbing heat, and the Ma-la Prawns, which had a nice, fiery kick.

Came here for lunch for the first time, and really enjoyed the experience. The restaurant has a really cool interior design: koi pond, bamboo water fountain, and Chinese pergola booth seatings. The lights are soft and the background music is soft traditional Chinese. I love the iPad menu, it's well designed and easy to use. The cuisine is spicy Szechuan style- many dishes have popcorn, chili, and are heavily seasoned. For a party of two we ordered the spicy chicken, garlic beans, and twice cooked pork. The portions are decent and the all three dishes were good. The service was quick and attentive. The food came out fairly quickly and the servers were super helpful and polite. Will definitely return again!

Mountain House has great food. There's always a wait. Be sure to arrive early. Dining experience could definitely use some improvement. The tea cups and plates are all chipped. Especially the tea cups. Even employees couldn't find a non chipped cups and gave us paper cups instead. With such good food, upgrading your plates could elevate overall. Also, I was burnt by your shrimp dish. Employee did not tell me that it was hot. Did she do anything about it? No. My recent experience will not stop me from coming just because I do enjoy eating there. Just some improvements to adjust. Also, you can't really go wrong with any of the dish.

Food: 10/10! Extremely large selection of what I can only imagine is authentic sichuan cuisine! Even delicacies like rabbit are available. We went with more familiar items on our first visit and we were in for a treat! First, the chilled spice cabbage to start was perfectly seasoned and immediately opened my appetite. Mapo tofu was perhaps THE BEST I have ever had. Another favorite was the fried noodles with beef - we ALLLMOST left this out, but everyone agreed this was one of the winners. The white fish was also great, with extremely tender and flavorful pieces. Tofu lovers will all rejoice at the crispy sizzling tofu - but a word of caution - the sizzle is reallll, this one is especially hot, temperature wise. Service: 10/10 No complaints, quick and friendly service. Ambiance: 15/10 The decor absolutely took our breath away. Private dining areas located in the back, beautiful, serene decor greet you when you first open the wooden doors.

How would you make a reservation for a group of 8 people? there is no option on the yelp waitlist or google reservation option. I tried calling but the number on google said they're not taking any calls because their voicemail box is not updated.

I called 626-986-5555 and they answered it. I was able to make the reservation on the phone.

    Do they have non-spicy dishes?

    yes they do

Do they have a private room or a section for a party of 20?

I think so, saw private rooms on my way to the bathroom 🤔

Hi can I bring my own wine? Thx

Not really sure... but call them to ask... usually restaurant will ask for cork fee...

    Do they have dim sum?

Yes ,there's corkage fees from 25 to 35dollars.

    Do they serve alcohols/cocktails?

I've just been there and they do have alcohol. They have beer, soju, sake, wine, and cocktails.…

How long is a wait time?

    30 minutes

Do they take reservations at this location?

When we went last month they told me no reservations on weekends, including Friday. Ok other weekdays.

    Can they seat large groups?

I think their largest table fits 8 people. After that you may need to split your groups or sit tighter in that area.

Any vegan options? Is there cross contamination between vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes?

I've tried quite a few dishes here and honestly everything has been solid. I usually get the house beef noodle but this time I tried the braised pork noodle. The noodles had the perfect bouncy texture, the pork was super tender, and the bok choy added a nice crunch that helped balance the richness of the broth. My friend got the hot and sour chaoshou which was also really good. The dumpling skin was chewy and they were packed with filling. It's also nice that you can customize the oil level in your broth. We ordered the pig ears as an appetizer too. I loved the crunchy texture but the flavor was a bit underwhelming. The initial taste was mostly chili oil and then the flavor kind of disappeared. They have a lot of other great appetizers on the menu so I'd probably skip this one next time. It offers a generous portion of tender, juicy meat and springy, fresh noodles. "DELICIOUS!!" I arrived at No. 1 Noodle House (Rowland Heights) on Sunday (around 11AM). Parking is easy. The lot is big with many spots. Staff is very friendly and welcoming, but Staff spoke limited English. Fortunately, pointing at the menu was clear enough. The food took eight minutes and nine seconds. Fast time! As mentioned, the Beef Rib Noodle Soup ($16.50 - Mild) is wonderful! It arrived picturesque and delicious!! However, despite ordering "mild," the food has a very strong heat; I sweat nonstop as I ate. The broth is rich, savory, and spicy. The meat is tender, flavorful, and falls off the bone. And the noodles are hefty, soft, and springy. It's a wonderful, euphoric combination of flavors and textures. Concerning ambiance, No. 1 Noodle House (Rowland Heights) is surprisingly spacious with its tall ceiling and relatively clean surroundings. However, its walls and furniture look worn down with time. Some seats even had torn holes. Unfortunately, the music uses radio with constant commercials playing in the background. Fortunately, there's a gender neutral restroom in the back. Overall, I found culinary magic at No. 1 Noodle House (Rowland Heights). The food is fresh, generously portioned, and well-prepared. I left full with a bright smile. If you enjoy spicy beef noodle soup, this is a must-try! 5 out of 5!! "GO!!"

I was very happy with the quality and portion size of the beef in my bed noodle soup. The wonton was firm and didn't appear to be frozen.

Today, my coworkers finally persuaded me to give it a try since the weather is cooler & I feel very silly now. The exterior and interior decor of this place is on point with the bold red and lanterns. It really sets the mood. Service was exceptional during lunch (wasn't too busy). The staff helped change out dirty plates often. Everything was clean. They were helpful in explaining the AYCE menu. The only problem I experienced is how slow the virtual menu was to load and long buffers between each click. At one point it stopped working to reorder so the waitress had to do it manually anyway. We got the half tomato (light spice) and half spicy soup (mild) base and both were really good! I might upgrade to med next time. The meat quality was great, esp the 1 wagyu plate per person that comes with AYCE. Surprisingly the fatty beef was so tender as well. Even the mala beef didn't hurt going in...or out. The bellflower veggie is a must try. Never had this crunchy vegetable before. Love the self serve bar with so many desserts and Chinese chips options.
