I like the crew here. I had a special order and they were nice enough to make it for me. The location itself is on the smaller side, appreciate the 2 TVs which had the US Open on which was useful while waiting.

They offer Detroit thick crust and New York thin crust pizza with a gluten free option if the thin crust. The NY crust is my fave... thin, chewy crisp crust. Mmm. This time, we dined at the restaurant. It is in the heart of downtown San Rafael on 4th Street . The shop front is not very large. We got there early and they were able to accommodate the eight of us. The fam ordered garden salads and three pizzas with one being gluten free with vegan cheese (Daiya brand). The gluten free fam bammers liked the crust. It looked just like the non gluten crust and had the same beautiful flame fired blistered crust. Mmm it was delicious as well. Our food was served quickly after ordering. Besides pizza, the menu includes appetizers, salads ( in various sizes), sandwiches, pastas, desserts, kid menu, and alcohol (wines, beers, and hard seltzers). Heads up on the parking situation. There is metered street parking ($1.50 per hour and free on Sundays & after 6pm) and is mostly parallel. If parallel parking is not your jam, the downtown city lot is around the corner on C Street ($1 per hour and free on the weekends). FYI - they accept: cash payments with bills no larger than a $20, credit cards, Apple Pay, and Goggle Pay.

The tomato and basil pizza was burnt so badly that it was inedible. It was beyond horrible. Yet, it was boxed and sealed and we were charged for it. The meat one was charred on one side and raw on the other. It wasn't edible. The wedge salad was whole and mostly iceberg lettuce with some tomato and one tub of ranch dressing. The house salad had onions, which we specifically asked be omitted when we ordered. The dressing was supposed to be on the side, but had spilled out. Things they couldn't control but didn't help: cars were parked in the loading area. There was no other parking and we had to park three blocks away and walk there and back. Since there's no way to check the order there, by the time I walked with the food knowing that house guests were waiting, and my husband was very ill, I just drove home. I could have walked back, waited another hour and hoped for less horrible food?

The pies are great and while I don't typically love crust, theirs is chewy and worth the extra carbs. I usually order a caesar salad or their seasonal salad option (warning: prepare yourself for a hearty dinner salad) with at least 1 of these pies: Mushroom w/ sausage (secret menu), Bianca, Napoli or their Margherita. You honestly can't go wrong with any pie. They don't take reservations and it's hard to find on your first visit. They are located upstairs above Vin (wine bar) and you can enter from 4th St or from their back entrance. The two things I wish for: them to offer delivery or a call ahead option for pickup and that they were open more nights. Wed-Sat simply isn't enough!

A few words in and a glance at some pics, I was sold. Here's where my next pizza is coming from. Shot out a quick text to my buddy in SF and eagerly awaited 5:00 PM opening time. I love pizza. It's kind of the perfect food for me. I could eat it every day. I'm somewhat of a pizza stalker, (arrest me) and this is as good as it gets. We shared a MARGHERITA pizza. Tomato sauce, mozzarella, basil. My buddy had a beautiful large portion HOUSE CAESAR. Little gems, anchovy, lemon, breadcrumbs, parmigiano, reggiano. A delicious craft cocktail for me: NONNO'S CARDIGAN- bourbon, meletti, black walnut, orange zest. The rotating hazy beer for my buddy.... Dig it baby, the only thing missing was a live jazz trio. I was so pleased that I returned a couple hours later with my wife and we had a delicious mushroom pizza.. Great "speakeasy vibe" with expert, classy interior design/decorating work. Truly a jewel in downtown San Rafael which definitely needs something to sparkle. And, it is located above top-notch restaurant, Vin Antico on fourth Street. Now you have two reasons to visit downtown. If a picture is worth 1000 words, here is a mouthful. Food for thought, have a peek. "He that keeps not crust nor crum Weary of all, shall want some." My go-to pizza is called Drag It Through the Garden, which is awfully named considering the variety of toppings on the pizza. I removed the artichoke hearts and broccoli, substituting these with Italian sausage and lingua. It's delicious. The crust is chewy without being soggy. And my go-to sub is the Meatball Parmesan. The meatballs are huge and the sauce is savory. Extreme pizza has a rewards card, whereby you purchased 10 of one particular item you get a free item. Good location, plenty of parking across the street in a public garage, nice décor and ambiance, wonderful staff, and a good menu, although it is light on vegetarian options; but if you are not a picky vegetarian, you can still leave happy and fed. There is plenty of indoor seating, and even a nice side patio protected from sun and wind; however, being alongside 3rd Street, a rather busy street, it can be a bit noisy. As nice as the day was, we opted to dine inside so we could chat. They have some good appetizers, and we chose the onion rings and the must-try Ooey Cheesy Balls (5 fried potato balls, mozzarella, parmesan, parsley, house-made smoked jalapeno aioli). The onion rings are plentiful and not at all greasy, a great start to the meal, but the anchor of the apps (for me at least!) are the Cheesy balls. They are different: basically mashed potato balls with cheese inside, deep-fried, and delicious! The house-made smoked jalapeño aioli is awesome too, and it's my preferred dip for the onion rings. For the entrees, I tried a pizza for once, after seeing many good reviews. I tried the Blue pizza (Garlic & herb olive oil, mozzarella, blue cheese, spinach, artichoke, mushroom, red onion). We also had the Buttermilk Fried Chicken sandwich (Butter lettuce, tomato, fresh slaw, pickle slices, house- made smoked jalapeno aioli (mild), brioche bun), the Chicken Salad Sandwich (Poached chicken, celery, parsley, dill, lettuce, tomato, pickled red onion, mayonnaise, focaccia bread) with an added mashed potatoes for a side, and a Chicken Pesto Panini (Pesto, roasted bell pepper, spinach, provolone, mayonnaise, focaccia bread). All the meals were very fresh, and the food was great! The Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich was a tower to look at, with two breasts as the main feature. The other sandwiches were well liked as well, but I know I was the lucky one with the pizza for lunch. If you like blue cheese, this is a great pizza you don't often find elsewhere. The toppings were just right, though I wouldn't have minded a bit more blue cheese, and the olive oil base instead of a red sauce was perfect for letting the flavors really come through, with the cheese, meaty chunks of mushrooms, and onions all balancing each other. The crust was a separate delight, a very thin sourdough type with a crust worthy of eating on its own - and it was! Sadly, between the appetizers and the entrees, there was no room for a dessert, and we all took home some of our lunches, and two of us brought home food for others! Always share the goodness . . . Can't wait for the next visit!

So I wanted to like it more than I actually do. Here's my main issue: the sauce situation. There's barely any on the pizza by default, and if you want what I'd consider a normal amount of sauce, they charge extra for it. That feels a bit like charging extra for a burger to actually have seasoning. The cheese is fine, the crust is fine, the toppings are fine. Everything is solidly in "okay" territory. Nothing offensive, but nothing that makes me think "I need to order from here" either. Skip the wings. They taste like they've been reheated from frozen, often arrive soggy, and have this thick breading that slides right off. Worse, they're frequently overcooked to the point where the bones actually splinter inside the meat, which is both unappetizing and kind of concerning. Just not worth ordering. The staff is genuinely friendly, which counts for something. There's a private parking lot, so no circling the block looking for a spot. And the coupons they mail out regularly do bring the price down to a reasonable level compared to other chain pizza places in the area. I wouldn't go out of my way to order from Stefano's, but I seem to be in the minority here. Plenty of people clearly love it. There's a reason it's become the default pizza for so many local schools and camps. Kids especially seem to be fans, and if you're feeding a crowd on a budget with their coupons, it gets the job done. It's a perfectly serviceable neighborhood pizza place that works well for many people, just not my first choice. If you're curious, maybe start with just a pizza (extra sauce, trust me) and form your own opinion.
