It's been 5 years since my last review; it's time for an update! 50-60+ visits later, I can say it's been a local haunt for us. Sir and I love the beer, Mt. Zion IPA and the Extra Special Bitter (ESB, I think they changed the acronym to mean something else recently...) Are my favorites. Dog and Kid friendly, but there's usually neither later in the evening on weekends, but I must say the regulars (dogs) are always great. Awesome staff, always. They run fun events and even more importantly they are always running some new brew to share and it's always amazing. They have growlers and cans too, now. Board games and laughs are always welcome and they do have an assortment of games available as well. We've met new friends, gathered with old friends, reconciled differences and had some of the best times at the Toad. We'll continue to be loyal patrons as long as their doors are open. I've stopped into Mountain Toad twice now after hiking in Golden. Not only are the beers tasty, but there are plenty of them to choose from. I've tried the Biere De Mars, Lemon Zest Grissette, Kippstander Kolsch, and Pedal On! (pale ale). I've enjoyed every beer (all of which were the perfect refreshment after being out in the hot sun). As for the staff, they are everything you could ask for. Attentive, funny, and non-pretentious. They will make sure that your glass doesn't stay empty for very long. Indoor bar not your thing? Take a walk around back to their dog friendly yard, complete with a rotating food truck and multiple tables. I've indulged in the food from both trucks on my visits - tacos and BBQ - and they were both fantastic. When in Golden, be sure to pay Mountain Toad a visit. read more

Lots of delicious brews here. There is a cute patio area with warmers and a fire pit. While I was here they had a brick oven food truck and the pizzas coming out of there looked delicious! These beers are phenomenal though. I tried the black lemon saison, white ranch wit, kippstander kolsch and pandan porter. All were two thumbs up and so easy to drink!! Thank goodness our friends have good taste. After a Golden Gate Canyon State Park hike, my food goals were pulling us toward I-70 & Kipling, too far for my friends so they suggested Mountain Toad. Mountain Toad is always a great stop after a long (or short) hike in Golden. We've been here several times at this point, and are always pleased with the new brews they have on tap. A good old standby is the Wit, and the last time we were in I really enjoyed the cream ale, which we ended up getting a growler of. One of my favorite parts of Mountain Toad is being able to enjoy the weather on the patio. They are dog friendly on the patio, so there is always a nice mix of people outside with their children and dogs. Mountain Toad also always seems to bring in great food trucks! A while ago we enjoyed a truck with amazing sweet potato fries, and flat screen TVs on the side of the truck so we could watch the game. This last time, there was a Southern/Asian fusion kind of truck which was delicious. read more

This is purely based off of their soft opening. I really enjoyed the beers. Tried the IPA and wit, both were good. The IPA was hoppy but not too bitter and a little bit malty. I'm the type of person that enjoys their hops but I also enjoy when there's more flavor to a beer. I will definitely be back to try their other brews. They told us their wit had honey as well as grapefruit rinds. I usually hate grapefruit but I couldn't taste the extreme bitterness from it. It was a lighter beer so I can't say that I'd order it again (especially with their IPA on tap) but I wasn't opposed to it either. I The owners were really great. They talked to us about how they got started and the process they went through to brew their beers. I will definitely be back. We went for their soft opening and really enjoyed it. The founders are scientists so that is a 100% plus for me. While we were drinking they brought us a deck of cards to play with which was really nice. In addition, I think they're thinking of more games to bring. I am mostly rating this a 5 star for the experience I had there. Spent the beginning part talking to the owners and they were awesome. Another bad ass Golden Brewery! Like many of the microbreweries around this state, the beer here is very good, and for me the venue of Mountain Toad is better than many others. The highlight is definitely the beer garden, which is simply the term I use for an outdoor space to drink beer. When you walk outside, you go down a few steps and you're met with a very lively and energetic atmosphere. There are usually about 20 dogs meeting new friends, there are families, food trucks, it's just wonderful. They actually let the food truck of the day pull into the enclosed patio area and then close the fence behind them, so it makes you feel like you're in this oasis hidden from the rest of touristy Golden, CO. Everyone is welcome, there is good beer, good food and no reason to worry about anything. If you're in town thinking of a place to spend your afternoon after walking around all day, this a perfect place to set up shop for a couple of hours. read more

Nice brewery located in (or nearby) downtown Golden. I had a Saison here which was pretty decent. The bartender was nice and sociable and the set up is nice and relaxing. The beer itself was not as experimental in taste as I am always looking for but it is a nice little stop when you want to unwind a little. read more

Small breweries like this are hard to rate because the beer is the focal point yet it is so subjective compared to other elements that can be rated. I will start by saying that I was impressed with the feel of this place. The tap room was hopping with energy and the outside patio was filled with patrons enjoying their brews and the perfect afternoon. I had several questions of the bartender about the beers and she was really great explaining the different beers and the ones she liked. I did not care for the Wit nor the Hops. In fact, I felt like "Hops" was a misnomer. What comes to mind is a beer filled with bitterness but it is supposed to reflect the fact it uses two different types of hops. This beer had no hoppiness to it whatsoever, which is what she explained to me before I tried it. She recommended the IPA, which was actually pretty good. I wouldn't mind going back for another. My friend had the Amber, which is fine, but nothing special. Back to my original point... I like this place and it's 4 stars but, for now, given the beers they have, I can't give it more than 3 stars. read more

Mountain Toad is my favorite place to get some great beers in Golden. It is centrally located in Golden and shows off some nice views of Table Mesa in addition to being a super relaxing setting. You can sit inside or get fresh air and fireplaces outside in the courtyard. Each day has a different food truck as an option to get something to eat as well. Cute little place to stop and get a beer after hiking in Morrison. One of my faves? Not really. We stopped here and the place was overrun by a college alumni group. Lucky we got there early and found a picnic table out that we ended up sharing with some people from the group. Not an issue there since I think it's ridiculous for two people to take up an entire table but the large group made it difficult to move around and get beer. They have 5 oz tasters for $2 each so three was the magic number to try out a little variety. I'm a hoppy girl so I tried the Mt Zion IPA, Pale Ale and a Cream beer. The Mt Zion was the most memorable but nothing really stood out about it compared to other breweries. I always like to go to the website and find out about who's making the beer, the history and selection but all they have on their website is info about food trucks. I've heard a lot of mixed things about Mountain Toad and now that I've been, don't really see myself coming back unless I was showing people different breweries in Golden. Seeing that I live in A-town, I doubt thats going to happen. It's not meh but it's not my favorite. read more

This is my favorite brewery in Golden. It doesn't brew the best beers in town, and it's always over crowded in side, but the people are friendly, beers consistent, patio fantastic, and food trucks yummy. I like their rotating / seasonal beers the best. Can it be Christmas again so I can have another Yule Hop? They really need more parking, I'm sure the neighborhood is sick of us lining the street for blocks. Overall it's a really great brewery. Come by, have a pint, make some friends, and pretend you have a dog. Did I mention the dogs? It's like you've died and gone to dog heaven and all they serve is beer. I love this place. read more

This is another small brewery I visited during my time in Golden, CO. It is quite a small place but enjoyable. I arrived there as soon as the doors opened and it got quite busy in about 20 minutes. I was excited to try a flight of the beers they offered. Included in my flight was 2 of their IPA beers (The Lion of Zion was crazy bitter!) and a specialty ginger wheat beer. I personally didn't think ginger could mix well with wheat but somehow it was pleasant. Out of all my beers my favorite though was the Pedal On Pale Ale. One neat thing was the paintings they had on the walls and they were all for sale. If I had to be picky, the one negative comment I could say was that the flies inside were annoying. This is to be expected though with their front door open and also the side door that leads to their outdoor seating. Mountain Toad is for sure a good place for great beer. read more

A very kId, dog, beer friendly little brew joint. Inside, the bar area is electric, the "beer tenders" are knowledgeable, friendly and willing to offer a sample at the first drop of drool. Around the bar gathers an eccentric group of Golden Locals, one reading a book- and not from a tablet...two hard core mountain bikers talking about their just finished epic ride down Enchanted Forrest to a couple who stumbled in and painstakingly order a mojito and a Crown and ginger, only to find the only drink to be had comes from a tap. The outside patio is drenched, dripping and littered with kids, all kinds of kids, rug rats, drape apes, and crib characters. And pooches. Large dogs, small dogs... many dogs... Every time the main door opens up, it's another kid, being led by a dog, followed by a mom in bike shorts and dad pack-muling all the cargo towards the sandbox outside...with other like fathers building mountains from all the stuff they have to carry in. And just outside...the food truck. And all those biker short wearing moms trying to multi-task of removing sand from diapers while trying to explain to an already sugar-high child, "That's not the Ice Cream Man." Today was empanada day...delightful. I loved their Ryrish Stout, no misprint- stout from rye. Go for the beer tenders, go for the beer, just don't go looking for an au pair (that's nanny). read more

A Golden landmark, and it is a terrific place to visit whether you're there on a date, a fun beer tasting, a meal, or just looking to have some fun with friends and family. Went here on a first date, and the courtyard was an ideal place to get to know each other. In fact, i think the setting and overall atmosphere made it an even better experience. Great range of beer choices, outstanding service, and a food truck on-site had plenty of options. Loved the courtyard firepit! The outdoor area accomodates and welcomes dog owners to bring their pets. Lots of parking, ideal location, really good customer service. Fantastic (second) experience at Mountain Toad yesterday! My husband, baby, dog and two friends were on our way back to Denver from a beautiful hike in Golden Gate Canyon State Park and needed to revive ourselves with some food and beer (well, not the baby or the dog, but the rest of us). Mountain Toad offered a variety of beers that left everyone satisfied. Two of us selected the black lemon saison and one friend had the Irish red. About 24 hours later I'm still thinking about it. Flavorful, refreshing and strong. While we were there we also encountered: 1. a LOT of (well behaved) dogs on the back patio, including three golden retrievers, 2. Several other adorable kids and babies (definitely family-friendly!), 3. A guacamole contest (YUM), and 4. Girl Scout Cookies (double YUM). So much going on, even on Super Bowl Sunday! The food truck (Barbed Wire Reef) was the perfect food pairing. But that is for another review. I'll definitely be back and I'm not sure I can wait until our next hike to do so. read more

Great beers with an extensive selection of their own brews. A very relaxed atmosphere that reminded me of neighborhood taverns of my youth. The bartenders were friendly and helpful describing their selections. There is a large outdoor seating area which had a good crowd even on a chilly night. They allow different food trucks to come on different nights so snacks or meals might e what you like one night but not on another night. We came here to see a friend's band play, and in turn discovered a new favorite hangout! Mountain Toad is adorable. There's no way around the it, the place is oozing charm. From their projection of whatever game is on, which allows sports lovers to watch without being the main focal point of the bar, to their seasonally strung Christmas lights, we were fans immediately. The bartenders were nice and incredibly friendly, especially considering this place was PACKED. It was so refreshing to have a pleasant interaction with a running-around bartender, instead of the hurried and impatient reaction you typically get in situations like this. Bonus: the beers are affordably priced! The place is a bit cramped when full, so it's wonderful that they have a large back patio for the crowd to spill into. As it was winter when we visited, they had various heaters and a large fire pit, making the space comfortable even in frosty weather. This area is also where you will find their food truck of the night, a calendar of which is posted on their website, helping you decide if you'd like to eat before or catch a bite here. The calendar was not accurate for the night we went, but I assume that's a one off. Between it's picturesque location in the middle of Downtown Golden, it's phenomenal service, and it's fun and lively atmosphere, this is definitely a fun place to spend your time. We are already planning another Golden trip because we enjoyed being there so much, and Mountain Toad will absolutely be on the itinerary. Definitely recommend if you're in the area! read more

I have been a proud supporter of the Toad for a couple of years, now and can't see that stopping any time soon. and so the other night, I was compelled to share the establishment with a visiting friend from Maine, who is more used to Gritty McDuffs and other such establishments in the Old port area.....and as a result of his visit, he was a happy camper, too!. The only drawback of our "tasting experience" was that the food truck pulled out a little too soon. I guess my only request for the staff is that the Food truck owner or Barstaff should tell the patrons about the last call for food.....Hence, we missed the food truck, but that provided me an opportunity to share another Golden Gem.....Bob's Atomic Burgers...but thats another story- read more

Nice little brewery on the river, kinda. I may have been there on an off day, but compared to so many amazing breweries I have been to recently it was alright. The service was good, the layout was nice and the wall art from a local artist was great. The beers were not memorable. First off, they were messily written on a blackboard and more importantly, they tasted less than amazing. They were OK, a lil more hoppy than I prefer. But, I can't recall a single one. I did appreciate the jam band laid back vibe, the tulip glasses, and the idea of it all. Perhaps another experience or two here will shift my thinking. read more

My boyfriend and I visited several breweries while visiting Colorado and this was one of our least favorite stops. We had one beer and left. The beer was mediocre compared to other breweries we visited. And while we're both dog lovers, there was a very large dog wandering around inside without a leash. Also, the music was way too loud. They were streaming live song performances from YouTube videos (tacky) and had the volume so high it was like we were in a nightclub. One last note: there are local artist paintings on the wall, which it's cool that they feature local artists. However, one canvas painting was valued at over $2k. Seems a little out of place for a local brewery that sells beer for under $9/each. read more
