Stopped in here because I was so hungry, and there are not a lot of choices for food between Raton, NM and Moab, UT. I ordered a spicy dish, there was no spice to it. Crab rangoons with sweet and sour were light and good. Wish there was more crab in the filling. They were my favorite thing I ordered. Inari was bland and disappointing Cali roll was better than average but not great. Veggie lo mein was lacking flavor. Wish I would have gone rice instead. read more

The food here is usually pretty good! We especially enjoy the sushi, and the egg drop soup. The menu has a nice variety, so there's usually something for everyone. Service, however, can be a bit inconsistent--sometimes it's friendly and attentive, and other times it feels rushed or less engaged. I have been eating at Hunan since childhood and still love their food. Not many places in the valley compare to their diverse cuisine. The sushi is also fantastic. Most servers are kind, and I enjoy the setting and peace. I have not found a Chinese restaurant that compares to their pork egg rolls or teriyaki chicken. We got there at 5:30 and they were already done serving sushi after I drove an hour to get there. I ordered crab and cheese wontons and fried calamari, the wontons came right out but the waitress forgot the calamari and had to be reminded. They weren't worth the wait, they had fried chicken batter on them instead of the usual tempura batter and they were quite fishy. The waitress wasn't very attentive. read more

I like to call in to-go orders to take back home with me in Sanford. The only dish I like to order is Hunan's fried tilapia which comes out crisp if you eat it immediately. It's not great if you have it later as a leftover. The other dishes are hit or miss, sometimes delicious, sometimes so-so. No consistency. I like eating sushi for lunch, but was informed that their "sushi chef" does not like to make sushi for lunch, only at dinner. They should put their sushi hours in their website. I also tried calling in a to-go order at 1:20 pm and was told that they were closing in a few minutes. Huh?! Hours on website says 11am - 9pm. Thank goodness the food is delicious because the customer service and management of this resturant is horrible. The waitress we had yesterday was so disrespectful and upset that their were customers in the resturant and acted as all the guest were inconvenient. They do not open till 5 so their was a wait of people at the door, but That is something they need to prepare for. They were very understaffed and also had poor management of who ordered what for a big party. The check out system is also very unorganized. The food is pretty good here. It is standard fair for Chinese food. It's neither excellent or bad. It's just decent. The reason that I am rating this restaurant as a one star is because of how they operate. They serve sushi but they don't start it until after 5 or 6 or whenever they feel like it. I have often called after 5 only to be told they don't know when they will begin to serve it. How do I plan to go there for dinner when the restaurant doesn't know when they will serve it. Last night was Friday night. At 5:45 it wasn't available to be ordered and the guy had no idea when he'd be ready to serve it. It's not even great sushi. I have just given up on this place. This is the BEST Chinese restaurant with the freshest sushi and homemade pickled ginger, egg rolls, and all of the sauces, too! They have a HUGE menu of choices and a kids menu as well as one for seniors. We got a lot of food for the money, too. read more

Halfway through dinner I saw several employees (cooks, dishwashers) come from the back without masks on. One woman was cleaning tables without a mask. Our waiter, John, was wearing a mask all night. When we went to pay, same woman came to check us out. I asked her to put on a mask and she got very hostile and snippy with me and walked away. She said then I guess I won't check you out. Second woman comes out of the back to take our check and I had to tell her to put her mask on as it was down around her chin. After trying to argue with me that it was on and I pointed out not when she came out, her excuse she was in the back. I asked are the cooks not wearing masks? She didn't answer. She tried to say she had been vaccinated. I proceeded to tell her it doesn't matter she can still spread it. She needs to wear it. The OWNER comes out of the back without a mask. He put it on before starting to make more sushi. He was already behind the sushi bar. I told him what had happened with the first woman. His response was she wasn't on the clock just there helping out. I told I don't care and I will report this to the health department on Monday, which I will do! read more

Hunan undoubtedly has good food, but it doesn't stand up to the poor service. On multiple occasions, I have watched the staff worry about only themselves and not the entire team. This is a busy restaurant, so don't go on a weekend night expecting your entree in 10 minutes. Super tasty appetizers, so give those a try. The pork egg rolls were amazing. I also loved the two rolls I got- Alamosa and Volcano roll! read more

We have been here a few times and have never been disappointed. The hot and sour soup is favorite of ours. The service is great as well.

I tried going today as I'm from out of town. On Yelp it shows they're open 11-9 on Saturday. That was not the case & I was disappointed.

Decided that I must give this place a try, since it is probably the only Asian food joint in town. I went in and the waitress clearly didn't speak English very well and it was difficult to determine what would be good off the menu. I decided to go with a combo dinner with the Basil Beef and Lo Mein, sweet and sour soup, and wonton. The sweet and sour soup was good, but very generic and definitely not home made. The Basil beef had a very small portion and was over cooked and dry, with little to no basil flavor. The Lo Mein was just horrible, I could not eat it even though I WAS HUNGRY. So I would definitely just say if you are in the mood for good Asian food, make it yourself at home or make the drive to another town. read more

I am a loooooong time customer. I've enjoyed this restaurant since 1989. Even when I've moved away, I've made an effort to come back to enjoy the food. But I must say, the Chinese food has been in steady decline since they added the buffet. The food just isn't as good. Today's service was mediocre at best. I felt like we were ignored. Getting refill offers after it was obvious we were leaving. This place has always been a treat for me. "Gotta go to Hunan's since I stopped in Alamosa!" Every town in the West over a certain size has a Chinese restaurant. In Alamosa, its Hunan. If you want to eat what you think is Chinese food, you go there. The menu is extensive, and there are probably some good choices, but we did not discover them; everything that came was standard-issue mediocre, cooked in too much cheap oil and with too much sugar and very standard "chinese restaurant" seasoning. It was nice to have brown rice as a choice, and the hot and sour soup was good. The decor is OK, but the ambience was spoiled by truly awful pop music being played too loud over speakers, and watiresses dressed like strumpets with their boobs nearly spilling out of their tops when they bent down to set down plates. Perhaps some go here for this; I didn't. There was a sushi bar, with no sushi chef in sight. The fish on display looked neglected. Given that this is the desert and 100s of miles from the sea in all directions, I don't know how fresh the fish would be. read more

The time comes to retire every tradition. It's time to retire the availability of good Hunan cuisine in Alamosa. I was dragging my feet, but this second try, I sent my order for seafood hot and sour soup back to the kitchen with a request to make it "very hot and very sour" and it came back a lifeless imitation of its memory. Ah well. When an authentic menu and kitchen get passed to management that treats it like American diner food I can let go. I plan to try the Thai place down the block, same side, or, less likely, the healthy Asian place that is less dinner experience and more "grab a bite to eat" from the outside. Adieu. read more

The night after Thanksgiving and quite a few people ate at Hunan. We did too, choosing it for the likely-hood of speedy service and finding something that an overly tired child would eat. On both counts, a good choice, especially since we chose to eat from the buffet. Perhaps the food cooked to order would be better? Perhaps. Some Chinese buffets are quite good. This was fair; mostly fried food, much of it sitting too long in the trays. I added Chinese mustard to most of my bites and upped the flavor. Good sauteed green beans, and there was good broccoli in one of the dishes. Disliked the partially-covered hacking cough of the server. She was friendly and helpful, though. And it was cheap! My family and I tried out the dinner buffet at Hunan. It was not horrible, but also not outstanding in any way. Many options were deep fried. Nothing was very fresh. They were thoughtful enough to keep the sweet and sour sauce separate from the chicken so it would not turn soggy. Service was friendly and frequent. Prices were very reasonable. The dinner buffet was less than $10 per person. Given the limited dining choices in Alamosa, I would consider returning, however I would order off the menu. read more
