I really like Mox, even though a part of me resisted. There are so many great small game stores to support that I didn't want to love this (admittedly also small) chain store, but it's pretty great. I've been to the Chandler location a couple of times. It's easy to park, easy to navigate and find games, service has always been outstanding and we have never felt rushed when gaming for a couple hours. For food, I love the potato wedges and I got to try the mac and cheese this time, too which was pretty good. I do have to laugh about ordering the mac and cheese, though - after eating lunch, I asked if I could order a kids mac and cheese so I could try it and was told, no, but there was a side order - turned out to be the same price and likely the same size as the kids mac. My husband goes to Mox Boarding House every week with his friends and while we were out, we were nearby and it was the perfect excuse to stop by and check it out! We went on a Sunday afternoon, and it was pretty busy, we didn't have to wait for a table and they had plenty of helpful staff, but clearly a popular spot and perfect option for the family, date or with friends. They have an EXTENSIVE collection of games, definitely one of the more well rounded game stores I have been to and it's very well organized. Not only do they sell games, but they have a great game library for you to take advantage of while visiting. The staff is super helpful and able to suggest a few games that fit what you are looking for, and also offer help if you do need a bit of assistance learning the game. Bonus, if you love the game you played you can buy a brand new addition for 15% off. What a cool venue! We rented a private room for a group of 20. Food was great. Service was a little slow but when they were present they were very helpful. H the food was very good. Loved the nachos - lighter and crispier than a typical preparation. The ahi tostados were also amazing. The pasta and meatballs were decent, but only two small meatballs? Came to Mox last Sunday for a lil "rainy" game day with friends. Great place to get snacks, drinks, and play games! It can get packed but they put us in a lil booth around the corner where we could chill away from the cacophony. They have a full bar and full menu with gluten free options! They have a room full of board games, MTG, DND supplies for sale. The service is great and they are also super involved in gaming world so they were fun to talk to about our MTG game. The tables are nice and long to accommodate game play and snacks. They also host MTG draft nights and competitive nights and you can order MTG cards to be delivered there- will need to try! We did get talked to about not being allowed to bring our own water bottles in. And then it was kinda hard flagging people down for more water at our table, but other than that we had a great time and will be coming back! Mox Boarding Has has become my favorite board game place in Arizona! The staff is so friendly and super knowledgeable. Everyone is so helpful and just really fun to talk to. The food - some of the food is a bit on the pricier end, but our group loved all the food we got. The Hot Honey Chicken is a fried chicken sandwich and the chicken is juicy and soft. The potato dippers are a mix between a potato wedge and potato chip and it's really good. The Tavern Mac and Cheese was so creamy and flavorful. The Il Paradiso melts in your mouth! The Apple Cobbler Bread Pudding was not too sweet and just delicious and easy to share. They have board games you can check out for free. The library might be a bit smaller than some of the other board games places, but it's free to play as of right now! They also do a lot of events and have card games, roleplaying games miniatures and more! It's a fun place to hang out and check out new games. read more

Stumbled on this place accidentally! It got great reviews but I wasn't sure if the food would be good because it was a "game"type restaurant. I thought it was for kids, but it's actually more for adults. We weren't sure what to expect. Very friendly people there to help. They have a full bar, menu and large selection of games to play at your table. If you like board and/or card games, this place is for you! The service was a little slow, perhaps understaffed? The food was really good!! Much better than I expected it to be! My husband loved the burger and I got the Eggplant sandwich......sooooo good and huge. Salads were fresh and tasty. I was looking for somewhere fun and new to try on my birthday and I remembered this place which is right across the street from my work. I invited my friend's family to join my family and we arrived on a Friday night. I've never been to a Mox Boarding House before but looking at their website just before arriving they have locations in other states and cities. As you enter there's a large sales room with hundreds or maybe nearing a thousand games for purchase. We got help from an employee who recommended we get a table and then come back to the counter to pick out some games to play. As the hostess led us to our table, we went through 3 large rooms with tables for dining and playing. I didn't realize from the exterior how large this place was inside! It was probably not the best night to attend because it was very crowded. The tables in the room we were seated in were very close together and it was very loud and echoey. I had a hard time hearing the people seated next to me...and nearly impossible to hear people on the other end of our table. A server took our drink and food order. We all got something different. I was debating between the shrimp Caesar salad and the port-braised short ribs. It took me a minute to realize I don't want a salad on my birthday, so I ordered the short ribs. I wasn't sure what to expect from the food but when it came it looked different than I imagined. I forgot to take a picture. The short ribs as a tender cutlet in the middle of the plate surrounded by a pool of mashed potatoes, carrots, onions, mushrooms and demi-glace. It was actually quite good, much better than the presentation. Several party members got hamburgers and my wife the mac and cheese. Again the food didn't look spectacular but they all said it was very good. On to the games...so once the hostess took our drink order we went to the counter to select a few games. I was a little disappointed by the select of games you can play while there...while there's hundreds on the floor to purchase there were maybe 100 games to play while eating. Maybe Snakes and Lattes in Tempe has spoiled me with their selection that is 5-10x the size. However, there's tons of games I've never played so it wasn't a big deal. We played three different games while there. All of them were in good shape which is great when they are used and you're allowed to play while eating. One of the great things they mentioned is you can get 15% off purchase of any game you play from the store...so if you find one you love you can get it right away! Besides the difficulty hearing, the only other issue that night was their soda tap went out so we never got any refills. Our server only came around 1-2x over the 90mins we were there and so we also ran out of water. I'd like to go back some time when it's not prime hours. Next time if I have a larger party during prime hours, they also had rental rooms for pretty cheap...that would have been a better way to go if I had researched that ahead of time. read more

What a cool place this is! My friend rented a room for her bday so we had plenty of space for our stuff, games, food, and her bday pie. It was $20/hr for the room with a server and they were so attentive. We didn't have just one person helping us, it seemed like the whole staff was checking in to make sure we had what we needed. We only played a couple games since a lot of time was spent talking but they were fun games (hues & cues and trial by trolley). The drinks looked really tasty but I stuck with coke so I could focus on any game rules - the Good Karma had a creamy orange look and Siren's Song was kind of a blue spa water with a cute banana leaf twirled inside. I ordered the brown butter gnocchi with shrimp, it looked & smelled so good everyone wanted to try it. This place was a solid 10/10 for me. There are three areas to order food and get served at and they have board games behind the register to borrow while there. There are SO many games to browse in many different genre's. Love this place! We went last week to look around and bought a game. We talked to two very nice guys whose names I didn't get. Today we went back and borrowed a game from the game library that we played outside while enjoying entrees the restaurant. Sarge and May each offered fun games suggestions, and May helped us set up and go through the first round of the crunchier option we opted to try out. Their game selection is crazy good, and they have lots of games we haven't seen anywhere else, despite us being board game aficionados and going to every store in the area. Great new place! My husband is big into D&D and MTG so he loves the opportunities for game nights, tournaments, and shopping. The food was incredible! Definitely try the tavern Mac n cheese and the hot honey chicken sandwich was awesome!! I had the Il Paradiso sandwich. Very good, but the bread was maybe a touch dry. The staff in all departments were stellar and can tell they care about the customers. I hope one day maybe they'll expand the wine/beer list or maybe have some rotating options. We were excited to visit with the family. We decided to do lunch and that was a mistake 3 of us are still paying for. The prices were astronomical. 4 people, $130 for a tiny appetizer and food that was suspect at best. The shrimp was 3 or 4 days past its "best by" date. There were bits of hard pieces in the short rib. The burgers and chicken sandwich were small and flavorless for almost $20 each. Thankful that we didn't get beers. We explained the issue and they removed the shrimp Caesar from the bill. The rest of us paid with mild food poisoning. The gaming prices were a bit over market and the RPG section was wanting. We get it, you make your margin on Warhammer, MtG, and liquor sales. This, however, is Arizona and not Portland. Give us solid food choices for a good price and make it more friendly like a game store should be. This is a flop for real gamers. read more
