Researched for hairstylists and makeup artists for the past couple of weeks before my friend's wedding day. Most of my research was on 3 things: 1. Price 2. Customer service 3. Reviews All checked perfectly! I called a week before for a wedding updo and makeup. Came in the day of and was greeted quickly and provided my bf and I for some water. Sparkling water is available if you feeling fancy! It was nice because they gave my bf the WiFi access so he wouldn't get bored waiting. Andrea did my hair and it came out prefect. She listened to what I wanted and styled it the way I asked along with her expertise. Maria (I think was her name??) did my makeup. I have been coming to Christopher James for years. My fave ever hair stylist and expert colorist is Andrea Baca. I have crazy whims and she's kept up with both me and my daughter. I've never been disappointed. The salon is very clean and the decor is professional and modern. All of the staff is friendly; always ready to greet you with a beverage and a smile. Unprofessional staff. Unfortunately, it is clear that some of the staff are very unprofessional and do not respect their client's time. I had an appointment scheduled 3 weeks in advance with my stylist. The front desk called me on 2 separate occasions and asked me to come in early for my late afternoon appointment, which I could not do because I also work full time. 20 minutes before my scheduled appointment time, the front desk called to inform me that the stylist had to cancel my appointment. I could have seen this coming, as it seems like she just wanted to leave early. I had already left work early (at their request) to make it in time. Very disappointed. Chris Babb is a brilliant stylist and I can recommend him, but I can't say the same thing about other stylists at the salon. Chris is out temporarily so I saw Leslie instead. It was a terrible experience. I spent time explaining to her what Chris and I had been working on, and she had my record. So when she told me she knew what to do, I expected that she did. She didn't. She does not know how to do a root touch-up when you are trying to grow your hair out to it's natural color. You're supposed to let the color continue to fade and touch up the roots to match. She gave me a regular root touch up and made the color too dark. This has set me back several months getting my hair back to its natural color. I also explained to her that she needed to use the same product he had used on my last appointment, because the first product he used burned my scalp. She didn't do what I asked. She used the same type of color he used at my first touch up appointment. I came home and took a shower right away, but it still took almost 24 hours for the burning to stop. It still itches. And to make matters worse, she charged me twice as much as he normally does. Even after we talked about it, she insisted that's how much she charges. If Chris is expecting his other stylists to cover for him while he is out, they are not doing a good job of that. Chris has been doing my hair for seven years, but I won't be back any time soon. read more

This was my first visit to this lovely salon and boy was I impressed! The salon is very clean and is decorated with an earthy vibe, complete with fresh flowers! It smells wonderful there as well, likely due to the light aromatherapy being misted throughout. It is also quite light due to all the natural light coming in from the south wall-length windows/storefront. I went to get my hair colored by Robbie Gutierrez and I was totally pleased with the results. I had been to another salon where they didn't take the time to bleach out the strips I wanted colored, nor did they leave the color on long enough (I presume) so I was looking for someone who would do what it takes to obtain the results for which I had hoped, and BAM! Several hours later, I arose a beautifully colored and coiffed princess!!! I highly recommend Robbie. Tell him exactly what you are after and he will make sure to book enough time and do what needs to be done (even if it takes a bit longer) to get primo results. Robbie is professional, fun, talented and will educate you about what he's doing, why, etc. Or not, if you just want to hang. Christopher Babb treated me like I was a nuisance rather than a client. I have had some hair mishaps and I was trying to be as clear as possible and make sure I didn't forget to tell him anything about my hair journey so he'd have all the facts. I even tried to inject humor into my situation as well as into how much I had to say about my hair but he responded with annoyance. In all honesty, I considered walking out before he got started. I decided to stick with it because I had high hopes for him given the reviews I found as well as because my hair really needed some help. About halfway through the appointment he seemed to lighten up a little so that made me more hopeful and relaxed. Even so, I still didn't feel comfortable speaking up anymore because I didn't want to annoy him again. I should have left before he got started. What I wanted was a partial bleach blonde balayage to help me transition away from my single process bleached hair. Maybe this was too much to ask but I do not think it was. What I ended up getting from Christopher Babb was not good. I could tell it was darker than I would have liked while he was blow drying it but, again, given how he interacted with me in the beginning, I didn't have the stamina to tell him that I was not happy with that. The lighting in the salon was dim (rule number 1: do not go to any salon with dim lighting) so while I could tell that my hair was darker, I thought maybe it was the fault of the lighting. It wasn't until my car ride home that I noticed the mess on my head. My hair is now dark gray with splotches of orange blonde. I even had blue hair product left on my face. All I wanted was for the bleach in my hair to be blended upwards via a balayage. While I can imagine that if I went back to the salon asking for him to fix it he would attempt something, but frankly, I do not want him near my hair again. He does seem to be somewhat popular so I'm sure some people leave his salon satisfied but he definitely did not bother to do a good job on my hair. I have never written a Yelp review in my life but I felt compelled to share this experience. Take this with however much salt you need. Maybe he was having a bad day. Who knows. I do not want anyone to have the experience I had with Christopher Babb at his Christopher James Salon. Two days later, I "YouTubed" how to chelate my hair and managed to get some of the gray out but not all of it. I will keep trying until the job is done. When I asked my network for recommendations, Chris was recommended multiple times - and now I know why! I went in for a consultation with Chris first and then booked an appointment for a drastic haircut. Here are my highlights from the experience. First, the space: it's gorgeous and smells amazing. Even the bathroom smells nice. Seriously. I love being in a salon that just feels so darn good. Second, the customer service: you can't take it for granted today, and this team knocks it out of the park over the phone and in person - every person I've interacted with has been friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Lastly, the service itself: I appreciated being able to book a free consultation with Chris to get to know him and discuss my #hairgoals prior to booking. After our chat, I entrusted Chris with cutting off most of my shoulder length thick curly hair and he absolutely WOWed me. When my sister asked if I felt different with such a dramatic 'do I realized I didn't: I just feel much more like myself now, and my hair lets my personality shine through rather than being something I struggle with and hide under. Stylist, Chris Tostie, has been late the last two appointments-even at 11:00 am-no good excuse if any given. After initial visit, He doesn't even explain what he is doing on my hair or what he is using-would like to be informed. Does he even like what he did/results? No compliments. Initial visit,he was informative but kept pushing salon products. I had plenty of photos to show for "icy blonde" and still hasn't achieved the look yet. It just seems he is somewhere else emotionally. As soon as he is done with me,he cleans up and goes to have his makeup done. This is a small salon, so interacting is very noticeable. It is hard finding a hair color stylist you like, but Chris makes it hard for me to want to stay as a customer. read more

I had an appointment this past Saturday at 9:00am with Chris Tsosie which is right when the Salon opens. I was waiting for him to show up. Finally when it was ten past 9 I asked the girl at front if my appointment was scheduled at nine. She advised it was and said they will call Chris and see what was going on. I could hear her on the phone with him which ended in a small laugh. She advised me he was still another 10-15 minutes away. No explanation, just told me he is usually early. Based on the end of the phone call she had with him it sounded more like he overslept or it was no big deal. At that point I was very off put by the unprofessionalism of this salon. I left and will not be returning. I thought Chris would at least call and apologize for being late to his work and making a customer wait but that would of been asking too much. Don't waste your time, find a place that's values their customers and know the basics of customer service. I should of known better as the first appointment I ever had with Chris he rushed through the appointment. My appointment was his last of the day and I asked for a cut and balayage. He finished my hair in under an hour and half. I have never left a hair appointment that didn't take less than 3 hours for a cut and color. It was obvious he did a sloppy job to finish work early. I spent 220 bucks for something that should of been half that amount. He didn't do a balayage he ended up just doing a hair glaze and he didn't even tell me that is what he did until I checked out and scheduled my future appointment he didn't show up for. My hair color faded within a couple weeks. Do what your client asks for not what you decide to do to get out of work early. I would hope for contact from this salon to remedy the poor experiences I had. read more

If you want a lazy hairdresser, go to Chris Tsosie. The first time I went he did foil highlights, which turned out ok. 6 weeks later, I went to get root touchups. He brushed base color all over my roots, and charged full price, stating it would give my hair "depth." Then yesterday I went back, requesting actual foil highlights. He said he would do balayage, which are "customized high lights." (His words). He brushed dark base color all over my roots AGAIN. Then I got a 2 minute haircut. I requested "cool base with platinum highlights." I now have warm blonde hair all over with dark roots. If I wanted two inch long dark roots, I wouldn't have made an appointment. He doesn't listen, does a half-hearted job, and charges $220 per visit. I won't be going back. read more

I have been a customer here for nearly a year and I am truly sad to write this review. They have a high turnover rate of talent, the place has become a little on the dirty side such as dust and grime. The front desk people are not very polite when called, and the owner seems to be a drama queen. He came in when I was getting a haircut and was nothing short of abusive to his employees. It was uncomfortable to the point I almost left right there. Due to these issues, I will not be returning. I don't know anyone who wants to pay salon prices and get inconsistent service and have to deal with employee/employer drama. read more

I had originally given 3 stars because there was some confusion on the pricing listed on the web site and what I paid. But Christopher took an extra step to call me and resolve the issue. For the more senior stylist there is a price difference that I didn't pay attention to while looking at their web page. It is a very lovely salon and I felt very welcomed walking in. They offered me a beverage and asked me to take a seat while my stylist finished up. Marion took the time to sit and talk with me what I like and what I wanted to have done. She was so sweet and talked me through what I wanted and reassured me she knew how to cut my curly hair. She started with a lovely scalp & should message. All of the products used on my hair smelled so lovely and held my new hair style quite well. I had been needing a new stylist since moving to ABQ last year but kept putting it off until a self caused hair disaster forced me into finally making an appointment. First off the salon is gorgeous inside, it smells beautiful and has the most stylish decor. Jackie took very good care of me and rescued my hair disaster, just after briefly telling her what I was looking for she did her thing and after it was all done my hair looked and felt fabulous! This review is for Chris Tsosie only. I saw him in September or October. I was super bummed and had hoped for a better outcome with my cut. As I had heard good things about Chris. I arrived for my appointment on time. Chris came to the chair about 10-15 minutes after my appointment time. I wanted about an inch or two off and to debulk my hair, due to the thickness of it. After washing my hair and combing it out, he stopped to put "the finishing touch" on a lady who was brought over and sat next to me. Once he did that, it was already over 30 minutes into the appointment. He finally starts my cut. He did the first section and cut. I think at this time, he realized how he screwed himself on time and put the rest of my hair down and did one cut of it. He quickly and sloppily did layers. He then proceeded to talk to me stupidly about allowing my hair to air dry to bring out my natural curls. I have a slight wave with the bottom portion of my hair. The top though, dries straight and doesn't have the same texture as the bottom. I agreed to the air dry, because I wanted to see exactly how bad the cut would be. When I got home, I looked in the mirror and you could see the choppiness in my hair and unevenness of it. For a place that that advertises themselves as a high end salon, I was hoping for a better outcome. I also wanted to note, I haven't been to another salon where stylist are allowed to do this, but Chris had his AirPods in, the entire time of our appointment. I asked my girlfriends and they all recommended Chris (that was about 4 years ago) and I haven't looked back. I made an appointment using their online system. I showed up and they let me sit there for 20 minutes before telling me that their booking system is glitchy and that it didn't record my appointment. The space is nice, and the location is well-situated, but that is completely overshadowed by the horrible attitude of the owner. I was one of the first clients to regularly patronize his salon as he opened the business, yet I never received a welcome, thank-you or even an acknowledgement. Instead, on multiple occasions, I watched the owner roll his eyes at customers and verbally abuse his employees. I don't know what a business owner is hoping to convey by calling his employees "reta**s" in front of customers, but I certainly will not be giving him my business any longer.
