A very cool little place. Loaded with little treasures. The service is slower than most expect but the people are courteous. I loved looking everywhere at all the different items in the place. In fact, it marched so slowly that I'm convinced we slipped into an alternate universe, where time doesn't exist and food is just a mythical creature. Not a place for tourists to relax in. The obnoxious political crap posted by management inside the eating area made me lose my appetite. Unsanitary conditions for food prep abound. They allow a bulldog to roam thru the eating area & probably the kitchen. The dog would not leave me alone while I ate my sandwich. The food itself arrived hot although it took 45 minutes to arrive during a slow day. There was a man apparently 'sleeping something off' at the table next to me. As an Alice in Wonderland lover, I had to have lunch here. The decor was wonderful-teacups, teapots, books, random quirky statues. It was a cozy little place. The atmosphere far exceeded my expectations. The servers weren't as friendly as other experiences we had dining around Jim Thorpe. Our waitress often disappeared, meaning less cups of coffee. She also rung up our order wrong multiple times, should I not have noticed we would have over paid by $20+ dollars twice, and she didn't apologize-just laughed it off 'oops'. This was a bit upsetting. As for food, I ordered the special pancakes (banana, strawberry, blueberry) (which I still think she overcharged based on the menu listing) I also got a side of scrambled eggs with broccoli and sausage (which I asked for omelette style but instead it was three separate pieces). My husband got the bacon and egg omelette, which had really delicious sweet onions. I very much wanted to like this place. My friends and I were visiting from out of town and a friend of mine had been here before and recommended it. Although I did enjoy the decor, and it was a fun space, I did not have the best dining experience. It may have been the time when we came however, there is only one person working. So that meant one person was taking customers, seating customers, and taking orders and making the food. My eggs were decent, and the coffee was subpar. I also noticed that there were some items in the space that were pretty direct in regards to political views. Although this did not bother me at all, I know, that it was unsettling to others. Visiting a new area for a day, while my friends got standard bar fair down near the rail station, I set out to explore on foot seeking a menu that would capture this former Manhattanite and now Philly burb foodie. I found this very inviting quaint restaurant across from a B&B and a music/concert hall. Factor in Covid and take out, I was surprised by the quality of my dinner presentation and how the sight and smells awoken my senses. My friends where all jealous and the conversation focused on what I was having for dinner. I ordered the Ellenis Focaccia- a mix of grilled chicken with peppers, mushrooms and in place of focaccia bread which they ran out of, and I can see why, they served this meal on another highly suitable house made toasted bread. Came here on a cold, November Sunday at 5pm for dinner, famished from a hike. Our group of four were the only customers in the small space, which was lovely. Calm and relaxing. The ambiance was warm, homey, and inviting. Perfect for a cozy night in. There's a fireplace in the center of the small first floor, where the restaurant is situated. No more than 20 people can probably fit in the small, richly decorated space in Alice in Wonderland theme. The second floor is where the owners live. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. Helpful with menu recommendations. Not overbearing or jumpy. A pleasure. We got lucky--we came in when one of the owners was practicing tap dancing with one of his students. We saw a lovely dance while waiting for food. The menu is quite extensive and everything is organic and locally grown. The portions are huge. The prices are on the higher end, to cater to tourists, but the delicious, flavorful, plentiful food is totally worth it. We got steak ($21) and crab cakes ($22). Every dinner dish came with a complementary garden salad. Highly recommend the house made dressing! When we were in, we tried the sweet onion house made dressing, which was perfectly creamy, gentle, and well seasoned. The dish comes with a baked red potato and a side of veggies. Veggies are organic and grown in house--such a surprise, delicious and full of flavor! On that day, they served Brussel sprouts, broccoli, asparagus, and string beans. The red baked potato was cut into squares and perfectly seasoned. Those sides were a bomb all on their own. The steak was big and a bit fatty. The two crab cakes were super tender and melted in your mouth. Chunks of crab, minimal bread--perfect crab cakes that came with a delicious, chunky sauce on the side. We couldn't finish all the food so we got it to go. We didn't have stomach space for dessert, but on the counter, we saw delicious looking, in house made brownies, carrot cake, and pecan pie. Our waitress came over once for drinks and took our order, then we waited 30 minutes for cold vanilla pancakes and decent pumpkin soup. Ate about half a pancake and saw a hair on the top, that is extremely unappetizing and disgusting. My friend got pumpkin pancakes that were cold and tasted like any ordinary pancake. I'm usually very forgiving but this experience was pretty bad. We were seated right away on a Saturday afternoon, which was nice cause every other restaurant was PACKED. But it all went down hill from there. My husband ordered a fried chicken sandwich and soup, and I ordered a grilled chicken salad without the walnuts. It took over an hour to get our food and they forgot to bring the soup. There is a serious problem with management. They had one girl hosting, waiting tables (inside and outside), bussing, ringing up, AND helping in the kitchen! I saw one other man who seemed like maybe the owner or manager, popping in and out of the kitchen, and heard one other voice in the kitchen. So maybe a total of 3 people working. Not good for running a restaurant. The service was haphazard, the food was just regular pub food. I mean, sandwich and salad...Fine but not anything to rave about. I should mention- my salad came out WITH WALNUTS, even though I asked for none. Good thing I don't have an allergy (I just don't like them), but it was annoying to eat around them. Def not worth an hour of sitting there waiting. Be careful if you're allergic to nuts. Good think we weren't in a rush to do anything else that afternoon. Some people got up and left after waiting an hour without getting their food. So I live in Jim Thorpe and had never been to Through the Looking Glass before. I had family come visit and we didn't feel like waiting at another local restaurant so we decided to give it a try seeing it wasn't super busy. It took twenty minutes to have someone come over and take a drink order and dinner order. We were interested in getting pizza but were told that a big group came in and that they had no pizza to offer. So we ordered two orders of chicken tenders and a shrimp and tenderloin salad. After that it was a good 10 minutes to get our water. Our food did not arrive at our table for over an hour. When the salad was delivered the waiter did not bring over any silverware even after being asked. I literally located the silverware and picked up a setting for the person who ordered the salad myself. The one chicken tender was not fully cooked and when brought to the waiters attention, he did not seem willing to make it right by taking it off the bill. He never checked on the table to see if we needed anything or if the food was ok. I am not one to complain and like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt but I would not/ will not bring my guest back to this restaurant in the future. It's unfortunate because I am all for supporting small businesses. I was hoping it was just an off night but after reviewing the reviews after my experience I realized I was not alone. To start, the ambiance of this place was beautiful - felt like we were in Alice in Wonderland. We had a man play the piano during our time there which was nice. It's also perfectly placed on the corner of broadway and Race street and situated outside the Opera House. Our server was a lovely woman who was working diligently among tables and she was very sweet. She took our orders and forewarned us about a delay in food due to appliance errors lol. However she truly went above and beyond for each table. Now the food, we started with the fondue which came out right away - it was delicious with chunks of crab and shrimp and the focaccia bread that accompanied it was crunchy! I ordered the sole for my entree, and that's where it gets the 3 stars. The sole was salty, and only had brown rice which wasn't cooked all the way and starchy. Went for some after dinner coffee, since they have many gourmet coffees listed on their menu. Also- I LOVE Alice in Wonderland and wanted to experience the ambiance! First off- it's TINY. Which is fine, however if it gets busy, it's hard to get up or move around. This can be remedied by not going on busy days. The decor was cute and had some Alice in wonderland themed stuff around. Tea cups and huge flowers and silly sayings on plaques etc. Also a man came in while we were sipping on our coffee and played the piano. It was cute and I enjoyed it :) Anywho- it started to pick up on the Saturday evening ( around 5:30pm) we went. There was only ONE waitress and she was also the hostess. I felt terrible for her since she was running around trying to take care of everyone. When we first got there we decided to order the 'coffee press for two' and that's all. The huge coffee press came out pretty quickly after we ordered. The coffee tasted good, however was missing that 'pressed coffee' taste. If your not familiar with how pressed coffee works, the coffee bean is ground up to a coarse grain and then put at the bottom of a container. The container is filled with boiling hot water, the coffee hangs out in the hot water for about 5-10 minutes, pulling out the coffee flavor from the coffee grounds, leaving the oils to also saturate the water. After said minutes, a lid is put on the press with an apparatus that u push down, which is attached to a barrier/filter, 'pressing' the coffee grounds down to the bottom of the container. The container is now filled with an amazing, smooth, coffee ground free liquid coffee, with the aromas and oils of the gourmet coffee. I also ordered a shot of espresso but she came back to tell me that the espresso machine was not in working condition. I was okay with it, however disappointed because again, there is almost an entire side of the menu full of espresso drinks to order from..... maybe they should get that fixed. Now though looking back and having the experience of the 'pressed' coffee, I feel that maybe she had told me that so she didn't have to go through the trouble of making it for me. So she brings this big coffee press container out and tells us to be careful when pushing down the 'press' so as to not splash hot water out of the pouring spout. Okay, thanks for the warning :) We wait a few minutes and push the press down slowly ( again this is to press the coffee grounds all the way down to the bottom of the carafe) and we pour ourselves a cup. WELL- after we drank all the coffee, I was curious to look into the carafe ( it wasn't see through) to check out the coffee grounds that should be trapped at the bottom of the container. I didn't think the coffee tasted like a pressed coffee so i wanted to check it out. I open the carafe up and low and behold ... NO COFFEE GROUNDS ANYWHERE! She had just poured regular already brewed coffee into the carafe! Now, I'm not a prude or stuck up or a coffee natzi... however, my girlfriend and I were on a romantic trip to Jim Thorpe, we spent the day doing fun adventurous things and even when to a romantic restaurant before this one. We were looking forward to having a pressed coffee as a desert from our fun day! I was very disappointed. I didn't mention anything to the waitress because there was no time.... No time you say??? Nope. No time. After the carafe of 'pressed' coffee Was all gone, it took 10 minutes for her to get us our check and 10 more minutes to come back and get the card to pay for it. Like I said, it started getting busy and she was the only person working. She almost forgot about us for a long while until we literally had to wave her down as she passed for the 10th time to take or check. It was like a drive by. I can't say anything about the food because we did not order any food. The waitress was nice enough although spread thin ( and apparently a liar). The ambiance was nice, small but nice and I loved the live piano player. The two things that did me in for the two star rating was how service got super slow due to her being the only person there and second; ordering a certain drink but being 'fooled' and given something other than what we ordered. I would have just ordered regular coffee if they didn't have a lovely French coffee press for two listed on the menu. I don't think we will be back here again unless maybe for lunch when it is slower. However there are so many cute places to visit in the area for food and drink that will be first on our list before giving this a second shot. Through the Looking Glass owners- there is so much potential in your restaurant. If you cultivate it with more staff, this might be the very thing that helps your business thrive so much better. We had an incredible experience at Through the Looking Glass. The other reviews here seem like they are from impatient tourists who want a quick bite while getting their butt kissed by wait staff. This restaurant gives you an intimate and unique experience and is prepared specially for you by the chef/owner, a one-woman operation. I had the best cut and prepared ribeye steak of my life at this little place. My girlfriend had the salmon which was melt-in-your mouth good. Come in, relax, and enjoy your experience. We put our name on the waiting list and the waitress told us to wait half an hour and when we came back to eat with our 2 young children the waitress called the manager and he took a look at us (not white) and told her not to seat us. These are still trying times for restaurants. Clearly, the establishment was operating with minimal staff, evident through the long wait time for our food. However, if you can get past the waiting (and disposable dinnerware) , the food is wonderful. The crab soup was very tasty and loaded with crab. The base was not too rich or thick- perfection really. The grilled shrimp and steak salad was huge, and also delicious. The trio slider sampler was a delight for anyone who appreciates smoked meats. I came by with a few friends on Sunday morning - we had seen the Alice in Wonderland themed restaurant a day earlier and we were very excited to check it out. There were a number of issues however, that led to having what amounted to an OK, but sub-par breakfast before we went back home. The service was quite slow as there was only one waiter for 6-7 tables. Reading some of the other reviews it seems like it is common for them to be understaffed on some mornings, but for some reason, we weren't told about this until almost the end of the meal. If we had been told up front we honestly would have had a better experience because there would have been an explanation as to why the service was slow and inconsistent. The toilet in the bathroom didn't work and it wasn't clean, which was another reason I didn't really enjoy the experience. I did enjoy the homemade bread very much - I think the fact that all the breads are homemade should be advertised because it really was one of the few selling points that I walked away with. I might try it again because I love the town and will definitely be back, but I certainly wish the service was better. read more

We only stopped in for something cold to drink on an 87-degree day! I got a pink lemonade which wasn't too sweet, and my boyfriend got an unsweetened iced tea, which was also good. We also shared an appetizer of shrimp with mushrooms, and it was great! The place was a little weird though - the guys who were working has forgotten to turn on the music, but a woman (a manager?) came in while we were still there and reminded them. The restaurant also had a big tv screen that showed aerial drone footage of various cities. It was strange and nauseating. I didn't understand how it went with the Alice in Wonderland theme. We've been here on several occasions now. I stopped by with my girlfriend last October and had the most delightful coffee and hot chocolate. The vegetarian options were very tasty. A few days later we came back and I had the pumpkin bisque with homemade bread, it was served in a half pumpkin and simply heavenly. The apple grilled cheese and the vegetarian chili were also excellent. It's a quaint little place with mismatched chairs, tiny tables, and a sprinkle of an antique Alice and Wonderland theme. The cat fish was OK but the slaw that came with it was almost inedible. Dinner was a disaster. We waited for an hour before we got our food. I had the crab cakes and they were dry, scorched on the bottom, and I couldn't taste the crab at all. My companion had The Red Queen's pasta w/crab. The pasta was undercooked, there was very little crab, not enough sauce, and way too much parmesan cheese. People were being seated after us and getting their dinners before us. For me, this was another testament that the average star rating on Yelp must be taken seriously! I can just tell that the food was TERRIBLE. We ordered a potato soup which came as cold, tasteless, base with chunks of potato and several pieces of raw and few-days old broccoli. We also ordered a sandwich that came as few elastic pieces of grilled (almost burned) meat in hot dog bun with just melted cheese. The side was even worse: a quarter corn on the cub which was I can certainly say was left on their countertop for at least a month or two. I have had other bad foods too but this one was a slap in the face. To me it was like someone intentionally decided to ruin your food, serve it in the worst possible way, and bring you a fat check. It's true that there can be a wait here for seating or even your food but for once, I really didn't mind. We were there on a Saturday night when David was playing the piano so we were thoroughly enjoying ourselves while waiting. And we felt a little bad for the guy who was waiting on all the tables but David knows how to work a room (just ask the kids who got to hear Michael Jackson's Beat It). So, the food is good, the entertainment is great and the atmosphere is fun. If you want something quick, grab a slice of pizza at the pizza shop.
