Somewhat of a hole in the wall place in a shopping center, but I was crazy impressed. I ordered jerk chicken (duh), green beans, mac and cheese, and collard greens. Jerk chicken was good.. my boyfriend ordered ox tail... so getting the ox tail next time. Im a sucker for soul food-eque collard greens.. and those were pretty good, but the green beans were way better. The collard greens were a little too sweet for me. The mac and cheese tasted like it came from the box, but you can't really go wrong with mac and cheese. It's good whether its box style or home made. I couldn't understand anything the lady behind the counter was saying when she was taking our order, but overall the experience was good and the food was great. Let me start by saying that I've eaten here once, years ago (buffet) and I wasn't wowed, so I ended up only occasionally coming here for happy hour sometimes. This time; however, I was in the mood for Caribbean food and this was the only spot open so I decided to give them one more go figuring, It can't be that bad can it? CLEANLINESS: The restaurant is set in shades of browns and reds so it has more of a warm, cave feel to it. Simple enough. FRIENDLINESS: I placed an order to go. The line was sort of long (6 people) but moved fairly fast I suppose. The cashier was cordially at best. MENU: I knew exactly what I wanted: Oxtail dinner. Yum!.. but when I asked the cashier if they came over a bed of rice, she said no, the rice would have to be ordered for an addtl' charge. So I opted for the large dinner (comes with two sides) with Mac n Chz and Cabbage. The cashier asked me if I wanted "more mac or more cabbage?" I was instantly confused and she explained since I wasn't getting the rice so I chose Mac n Chz. I found out when my food came. FOOD: I wish I had a picture because I was immediately and completely disappointed instantly! They use the traditional 3-section foam containers; however, they put my cabbage in one small side, the ox tails in the other small section, and filled the big section with about 4 giant scoops of Mac N Cheese. I questioned the serving cashier that the meat should be in the big part, and her reply was that, "The meat's always in the small part" Well I'd hate to see what a small order would have looked like! SMH If I wanted to pay $12 for Mac N Cheese, then I would've did just that. Besides, I've never heard of anyone putting meat in the small section for sides. What a jip. I was hungry and a little under the weather so I just took it anyways, afterall I'd already paid and waited about 30min to get it. TASTE: Just like the first time, the food was only "OK" Average at best. The cabbage was probably the best part but after biting into a big clumpy piece, was short lived. The oxtails were ok, not bad, but not the greatest, and lastly the mac n cheese or should I say Cheese N Mac. SMH I could tell by the yellow-orange color that it was cheesy but geez, after 4 bites, I almost died and threw up at the same time...besides it was so much also and nasty so I ended up throwing half of it away with NO REGRETS. VALUE: $12 for 1scoop of cabbage, 1 scoop of Oxtails,and 4 scoops of Mac N Cheese. Need I say, NEVER WORTH IT!!!! OVERALL: The second chance put the nail in the coffin, I would've been better off calling my mom, buying oxtails, and waiting all night for her to fix them. Lol & the fact that they are trying to be slick and get over on customers by using the smaller section more meats so that they save is far less than admirable and honest. I WILL NEVER FINANCIALLY SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS for food again. It's not right. As far as taste, they are highly overrated as well. Situated in a sleepy shopping center off Portsmouth Blvd., I've been here a few occasions, but today was the first time I ate from the buffet and I was a happy camper. Had the classic staples- curry goat, chicken, jerk chicken, fried plantains, etc., and about 10 other dishes. All was delicious and freshly made. I ate to my hearts content and hurt my tummy for being sooo greedy. I regret not taking a photo of the dishes. Everyone who worked there and the customers was courteous and gracious. The bartender on the restaurant/Caribbean side of the club only caters to men. She ignores the women that requests her assistance. We've repeatedly asked if we could be served and she ignored us and continued her conversation with the men at the bar. The bar wasnt packed at all but she didn't bother to pay us any attention. Went to their new location, food was subpar. The curry chicken was good and collards did not taste like soulful collards but they were damn good. The real problem was the mac and cheese and corn bread. The mac and cheese was bland, and although it LOOKED cheesy, it wasnt really. You couldnt taste the cheese for some reason, even though it was there. Didnt taste like cheese to me. Like I said, just bland and lacking. The cornbread was dry and lacking as well. Been here a handful of times. It is located on Jefferson Ave. after Richneck road on the right. It is hard to see at first. It is a Caribbean food store and restaurant in one. There is a place to sit but we always get the food to go. The food is already made and in a buffet style setting. They prepare the food for you in the take-out containers. Lunch special's are around $6. The taste of the food however, doesn't compare to other Caribbean restaurants in the area, but they are fast because the food is right there, and cheapest. read more

I visit mps occasionally on Fridays for happy hour they have a pretty good deal and good wings. The music is always good sometimes though I wish they wouldn't play it so loud during happy hour when you walk in you feel like you're at a club versus just trying to enjoy a couple drinks after work. I love this place, their food is just yummy, no matter what you order. I'm not a fan of fish but I shared an escoveitch (whole fish) with my husband the first time we ate inside and it was so good I went beyond picking the bones and actually ate the eyeballs, haha. Their jerk is amazing, the candied yams and collard greens and green beans can't be beat, and the goat roti got rave reviews from my hubby. The only complaint I have is the lunch buffet, which is served with styrofoam plates and plastic utensils. Shame to serve such good food on disposable containers, and it makes eating a little awkward. The food is pretty average Jamaican basics: curry goat, plantains, and rice. It's filling and if you do yhe buffet, you can try a little of everything. My stars, like for most of my reviews, are for the drinks. I had a rum punch (yes before five) and it was amazing. Like tingling tummy goodness. The customer service was good. The jerk chicken never disappoints even though for a large the portion size was pretty small, but this usually isn't an issue. Now this mac and cheese is an issue.
