When you walk in there's a high-top counter and a lot of guys were eating and reading the newspaper....felt like I went back in time as I haven't seen that in a long time. The rest of the seating was pretty full. The ambiance was good.....lots of people in groups eating and talking. Seems like a good place to go with a group of people. The food was ok. I wouldn't say it was "The Best" as I've had much better. The menu seems pretty basic with the normal pancakes, french toast, eggs, bacon, sausage. Still excellent after all these years! They will be 50 years old next year. They opened when I was an infant, so my family has been coming to Mr. Allison's all my life. As a kid, you get complacent, thinking it's no big deal. But the truth is that I am spoiled. I have had perfect eggs and fluffy pancakes all my life when eating here, and almost everything else is a disappointment. The burgers are big. Don't get a double burger unless you are big slob, like me. And have a chubby husband to help you finish it, like I do. Maple syrup with the pancakes. I don't normally do this but Mr Allison's on central has lost a long time customer forever. We arrived with a party of 4 was told 15-20 min. We waited 40, was told by manager we were next as they were clearing tables. As we were waiting I watched the staff start to rearrange the tables that were being cleaned for us and another group so they could seat the party or 10 that had just signed in 5 min before. Every time we have come here, it's been busy. The staff is fantastic, works hard and is patient. I always see a large population of senior citizens in here, and they are always treated so respectfully. Food is great and there are large portions. Then the Wildcards of pancakes/French toast/potatoes complete the meal. I chose potatoes. They are cooked dry and have no flavor. I had to butter and salt/pepper the heck out of them. The pricing on the food is very good. Portions are large. Service: Mostly good. Two of the wait staff were friendly and one seemed to be covering our server, who appeared to be having a hard time. Lived in mount prospect for years and finally decided to check this place out...I will never go again. My friend showed up first and told them there would be party of two but they didn't bring a menu or water for me even though I showed up 5 min after. Then we waited almost 45 minutes for our meal, during this wait our waitress never stopped at our table to fill coffee or waters. It seemed like they were busy with a large take out order, but it would have been nice if our waitress ever stopped by to update us. I am hesitant to write something about this hidden gem in an unassuming strip mall, because it might get too popular. But it is fairly popular already, so why not? There is a place in California calked Pea Soup Andersons that used to reel people in with their scrumptious pea soup. They have nothing on Mr. Allison's with its delicious chunks of ham and velvety pea soup. We also love their ham sandwiches, which are nothing like deli ham sandwiches. I just couldn't feel right about *not* updating my Mr. A's review after last weekend's gut busting breakfast. Imagine surfing through a cornucopia of breakfast possibilities and landing on an omelette special: jalapeno, cheddar, and onions stuffed between thin layers of eggy goodness. Oh, and I added ham. Wow! This place is known for incredible delectable ham cut from the bone. It's flavorful. It's tender. It's just the right salty-hammy-fatty melt in your mouth delicious. I ordered their special Sweet potato Skillet. It was a crazy generous portion of ham, sweet potatoes, cheddar cheese and FOUR eggs. I opted for only 2 eggs but honestly next time I won't - I'll keep the 4 as my take-home portion was easily another 2 meals for me. So delicious. Next time I'll ask to add on cooking diced onion along with the ham and sweet potatoes. I absolutely loved it. My husband ordered their Meat Lovers Skillet. Again 4 eggs! His plate was a mountain of potatoes, ham, bacon, sausage, and cheddar cheese (you have to ask for cheddar otherwise you get American cheese). My man is a big guy (over 6'3") and can he eat! He still took about half home. You also have a side of toast. Both skillets were $8.95 each. Just... wow. Place was packed on a Saturday around noon. Old looking diner, even a little dirty around the edges, but somehow it had a cool vibe. Like others have said, it's like a Mel's Diner type place. My split pea soup was fantastic - great flavor and not overly-salty like a lot of restaurant soups. My husband had the chicken noodle soup and it was just "meh" - the broth had no flavor. We both had 1/2 ham sandwich which was piled with so much ham (not lunch meat!), it was very filling. Service was lacking. Server didn't ask if we wanted our soup with our sandwich; she brought the soup first and then when we were finished, she brought the sandwiches. We would've preferred both at the same time. I asked for the bread for my sandwich to be rye; she brought me wheat bread. We also ordered fries to share and she forgot those. We had to flag her down to tell her. No ketchup on our table - again, had to flag her down to get some. Never received refills on our water or iced tea.
