They serve a pretty good Chili Dog here, and the fries are solid as well - they know to salt them right out of the fryer

I was back again to try the seasonal Brunswick Stew, but it was not available, so I chose the Vegetable soup again, and a brisket sandwich, my first here! The soup was as good as the last time, and I got the pint again. At $9 this is rather pricey considering there is no meat. A pint of Brunswick Stew at Honky Tonk Smokehouse is absolutely loaded with very flavorful chicken and it goes for $5.77. A pint of BS at Mr BBQ costs over $11! The Brisket Sandwich here, which costs $10.95, was excellent, and pretty well filled, and the sauce is very good as well - best gotten on the side and added as needed. The Brisket Sandwich at Honk Tonk is $7.74, but it contains only 4 oz of meat. I really enjoyed both items and for me they produced 2 meals, so I didn't consider the costs to be a major concern. Folks with larger appetites might not see it the same way.

Service was absolutely amazing, great ambiance walking in and immediately greeted by the staff. After ordering a Chopped BBQ Sandwich combo and Tray Combo, I only spent around $24 with a tip. I was also given a free side of banana pudding to try since I've never been here before. Great staff, great food, clean restaurant. 10/10

Friendly and fast service, I tried the chopped pork with BBQ slaw and fries. It had a sweet vinegary sauce. And it comes with sweet hushpuppies.

The food was great as I remember it being when I was growing up. Delicious bbq chicken, chopped bbq. The hush puppies are amazing. The lemon meringue pie is the best. The service was friendly, helpful and speedy. The atmosphere was the same as I remember.

Been here a few times and the place is always clean and the staff are great. Today I ordered the wing and would suggest to order them extra crispy. The flavor was good but the skin soft and fatty.

Walking into Mr Barbecue, I realized I have watched the movie "Spaceballs" one too many times in my life. Though I didn't voice it to anyone, after placing my order, I was internally saying things like "Time to fill up Mr. Tea, let's add Mr. Hot Sauce" or "I always have barbecue before I watch radar! You know that! Everybody knows that!" My own personal strangeness aside, Mr. Barbecue is a Winston-Salem institution. Unfortunately, several years ago, a fire burnt their building to the ground. They have since rebuilt a fresh modern spot, but with plenty of that "we've been here awhile" flair. Inside, the people are friendly, and the vibe is perfectly North Carolina BBQ. You order at the counter, and if dining in, they bring your food out to you. You'll also get your own drinks. No issue there at all, honestly, wish more places just did this instead of having waiter service. I'm watching my carb intake and trying to have more protein and vegetables, so I ordered a chopped BBQ salad. Unknowingly, this came with hushpuppies, a plus indeed but I did my best to just have a few to taste. The salad itself, was a really nice size, and loaded with meat. Perfect. The ingredients all appeared fresh, as you might assume, salad is not a priority at a BBQ restaurant, so even though basic... I appreciate crisp veggies. For the Q itself, as I said, great portion. In general, I thought it was a good representation of Lexington NC style Q. It didn't blow my mind, and I did need to help boost the flavor with a little hot sauce. Importantly though, the meat was juicy with an excellent mouth feel. Just needed more seasonings and smoke. Hushpuppies were good, they don't compare to my favorites in the area, but that is a lofty bar. Overall. I would come back here. Maybe when I am not feeling quite so health conscious, I'd like to have more of a typical BBQ meal. I can see why this place has a lot of fans. Thanks Mr. Barbecue!

I came down to Winston Salem from Ohio to watch a race at Bowman Gray Stadium. I was tired from the drive and was going straight to my hotel when I passed Mr Barbecue. Might as well get takeout for the room. I got the chopped plate that came with hush puppies and two sides. I picked baked beans and baked apples. First, the chopped bbq. Very good, and a lot of it. Second, the beans. Sweet, tangy, and bits of jalapeño. Also very good. Third, the apples. Very cinnamon-ee. Is that even a word? If not, it is now. Must have been two whole apple there. Again, very good. Lastly, the hush puppies. They were okay. They were room temperature and not a lot of flavor going on. I still ate them all. I'm not going to hold a few average hush puppies against them. I would certainly go back and eat there again. I'm gonna give them 4 and a half stars. Since that's not a selection option, I'm gonna round up for a five. Oh, I forgot the main point I wanted to stress. I got this all for under $12.00. That's right, under $12.00!!! Forget that 4 and a half star thing. It's a hard five for sure!!!

From the top of the plate: The coleslaw, hushpuppies, beans and chunk meat. I will pass on the coleslaw next time.

I was visiting from Southern California and wanted to try some good NC BBQ. Having no clue where to go, I consulted YELP. The YELP reviews for Mr. BBQ were really good and the place was on the way to where I was headed and so I thought I'd give it a try. I had to ask some locals what the difference between chopped and chunked BBQ was. Having received my answer (it's kind of what I thought - chopped=the meat is chopped up fine and chunk=the meat is in cubes) I opted for chunk. I ordered the chunk BBQ plate with BBQ coleslaw (I'm told it's a "thing" in NC ) and baked beans. The plate came with hushpuppies. I took my BBQ home and plated it up. I started with the hushpuppies and they did not disappoint. Crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. The BBQ meat was delicious and tender. The sauce is different than what I am used to. It was thin and tasted sharp with vinegar. I liked it and it complemented the meat perfectly. The beans were absolutely delicious. The were smokey and sweet. This brings me to the coleslaw... When I looked at the pictures online, I thought it looked a lot different than the coleslaw I'm used to, but since it's a thing, I thought I should try it. Well...I will be polite and just say that I am not a fan. Mr. BBQ did have another coleslaw option, and I assume it was more like what I'm used to, but, when in Rome. The restaurant was clean and I liked the way it was decorated. Kind of modern farmhouse style. The employees were all attentive and helpful. I would go back again and try some of the other sides if I find myself in Winston Salem again. Thanks Mr. BBQ!

Delicious smoked Bbq plate. Chopped is my favourite. Quick service and nice prices. Easy to get too. Regular or Bbq slaw. I go there often.

We happened to visit on trivia night, but it was difficult to hear the questions, so we didn't end up participating. Parking can also be a challenge during peak visits. The AC was also pretty loud, but honestly, on a hot summer day, I was just glad they had it! The open garage doors were a nice touch and gave the space a relaxed, open-air feel. Overall, had a good experience, the food is my type of cuisine so unsure if I will be back, maybe for drinks and appetizers for sure.

Our server was warm, attentive, and seemed to anticipate what we needed before we asked. The space has that familiar barbecue joint look. Nothing fancy, just comfortable and family friendly. Noise level sat right in the middle, lively but not overwhelming, and no one rushed us even as we lingered, laughed, and took more photos than necessary. I ordered the Pitmaster Plate with North Carolina chopped barbecue. You can choose sliced, chunky, or chopped. The pork was tender, flavorful, and exactly the slightly vinegary flavor I love. I added collard greens, coleslaw, and sweet potato casserole. The greens had a slight kick but were balanced. The coleslaw was fresh and necessary alongside the barbecue. The sweet potato casserole was easily the standout side. The only drawback is portioning on the sides. They are a bit small, especially if you are planning leftovers. I went in hoping to stretch this into multiple meals and almost made it. Still worth it, just manage expectations. Also worth noting, bread does not come with the plate, so I added rolls. My total came to about $31 with the automatic gratuity for larger groups, and I added a little extra. For the quality, service, and portion of barbecue, that feels more than fair. Everything was consistently good, and the experience made it even better. Great spot for groups, easygoing, and welcoming. I will be back. I chose their original sauce, by far the best selection for the brisket. As usual the to go order was out quickly, just over 10 minutes, and I was on my way, with my meal securely packaged. These folks do a great job filling your order quickly and accurately, and for a reasonable price - things that used to be so common at restaurants stretching from hot dog joints to steak houses - pretty rare these days! This was the typical excellent meal from Honky Tonk - the brisket was very nice, made very special by their original BBQ sauce; the Brisket Chili had its own full smoky taste, with beans included, but apparently no onions; and the collards are good but not great - more sweetness than I care for, no sign of meat onions, or cabbage. I drain the liquid that comes with the collard and add a healthy doses of red wine vinegar and Texas Pete. The sausage included cheddar and jalapeños, and packed a nice spice level. This would be nice served a full length on a hot dog bun with a stout mustard. This Tue and Wed promise to be rather cool, will consider another visit for the Brunswick Stew, more good stuff!

I even asked the barista if he remembered to put the espresso in it and he said that he did. I'm not so sure... this time I ordered something different. I asked which flavors of syrups they had and also if they were Housemade. The mark of a true gourmet coffeehouse is housemaid syrups... The girl told me that they don't make the syrups in this location, but at their Charlotte location and they're brought up here. They had the typical ones: vanilla hazelnut and mocha. I chose to get a regular iced oat milk latte sweetened with a little honey with cinnamon powder. The flavor of the espresso is very good and bold and it blended well with the cinnamon and honey. I also ordered two pastries, including A chocolate chunk cookie and a blueberry muffin. I ordered the blueberry muffin because a customer behind me said that the blueberry muffin is his wife's absolute favorite of all the blueberry muffins she's ever had! That sold me on it! The same kind customer mentioned something about a chocolate chunk cookie as he was asking his friend who was already sitting down what he wanted. Again, when I heard chocolate chunk cookie, I had to have one! They had samples of chocolate chip bread that was tasty, but it seemed to have sugar on it which though it is very common in most bakeries I do not prefer. I have no idea why they are putting sugar on top of pastries that are already sweet. It is likely due to the fact that most Americans are addicted to sugar! The complaint that I have is that it took forever for the barista to make my iced latte... I have no idea why... At one point after she had been working on it for several minutes she had to go get more oat milk but before that, I don't know what was taking her so long. Anyway, Copain has a cool vibe and they were playing very beautiful music that suited the vibe very well. The blueberry muffin was tasty and full of fresh blueberries but again it had sugar on top of it! The chocolate chunk cookie was also very large, fresh and soft. It was full of chocolate chunks, and I could even taste a hint of sea salt. Again, it was a little too sweet for me, though. There were several customers in Copain Bakery and Provisions enjoying their coffees and food. They have lots of edible items, including sweet and savory ones sandwiches, salads, croissants, muffins, cookies, brownies... They have ample amount of items to choose from to suit mini a distinct pallet. The service was also very friendly and warm. The prices were also what I considered to be excellent as I paid a total of less than $20 and that included the tip for my two pastries and my 16 ounce iced oat milk latte!
