I am basing this review on a single meal. So I can't speak for the rest of the menu. I chose to have the zinger chicken sandwich since it seems that is their premier item on the menu. And I think it lives up to the hype. It was a crunchy yet tender chicken sandwich topped with cheese and a special kind of Cole slaw. The sandwich was accompanied by a modest portion of seasoned fries and a drink. The sandwich was indeed tasty. Though I felt the bun a bit lacking. If you aren't a fan of spiciness then you might find its mild sandwich a tad bit spicy. It's nothing intense but it's not "non-spicy". Overall it was a good meal. A fast-food place charging sit-down restaurant prices; not a "cheap lunch" place at all. A burger - by itself - is (was) $9.99 when I was there this past spring (sorry for the delay in posting!). Add a platter with fries and a can of soda and it was $13.50. We got the "Zinger Burger" and the Gyros Cheeseburger platters. First - the Gyros Cheeseburger was very tasty; gyro meat was moist and flavorful, stacked on top of a cheeseburger patty. Second - the "Zinger Burger" isn't a burger... it's a tasty (but kind of small) breaded chicken sandwich, which is not clearly explained on the drive-thru menu. False advertising if you ask me... I guessed we got "zinged"! Neither sandwich was of a large size to justify the high price. Saving grace was the tasty fries, of which you do get a nice amount with the platter. My buddy did tell me that the broasted chicken was very tasty, but expensive and you have to wait a long time to get. Haven't been back because I don't think we got value for the price. read more

Desiring some good fried chicken on our way home from choir practice last night, we were disappointed to find that just about every shop closed by 9:00 pm! However, we made the fun discovery of Mr. Broast in Lombard that not only serves fried chicken but also burgers, gyros, sandwiches, salads, and the VERY BEST fresh-baked biscuits with honey drizzle we have ever tasted!! We arrived past 9:00 pm and had to wait maybe 12 minutes for our fried chicken value meals, but certainly worth the wait. Freshly cooked, not salty, crisp skin, but moist meat underneath. Really good fries, as well. It is run by Middle Easterners, so a little tricky in understanding each other's words, but they're friendly. We will surely return and try other menu items. First time trying this restaurant on a Saturday evening. The place was super busy however, the wait was not at all long. I ordered the Gyros Burger which was not only huge but quite delicious. This sandwich is a wonderful convergence of a burger topped with strips of gyros meat, typical burger toppings, sauce and it is truly yummo. The gyros burger is on a bun similar to a Hawaiian roll, therefore there is a tad of sweetness to the bun which marries well with both types of meat. The seasoned fries were fresh, crunchy and not at all oily. While waiting, I had the opportunity to see many orders prepared and the chicken looks, smells and apparently tastes wonderful. This is my go to spot in the Lombard area when I'm hungry. Their zinger sandwich and bun kabob are amazing !! I have been here a dozen of times and can say the quality is consistent. The bun kabob is a bit spicy so if you can't handle the heat just ask for less of the green chutney sauce on it. Don't let the "Halal" color your pre-judgment of Mr. Halal. It's not the type of place that only serves Muslim food. In fact, nearly everything on the menu I was given fits right in with American fare, from cheesy fries and paninis to breaded catfish and onion rings. Italian beef. Polish sausage. Greek-style Buffalo chicken wrap. Lots of countries represented, but the only Muslim-sounding item on the menu is lahori chargha, though it's labeled a "whole chicken, deep-fried, Cajun style." Maybe this place should be called Mr. Has-All. Mr. Halal sits in the middle of a strip on Roosevelt Road that could easily be called "eatery row." What used to be Riley's (and what will become Over Time Bar and Grill) sits at one end, Los Burritos Tapatios at the other. Dairy Queen, Kurry Khazana and Thai Sawasdee also reside there. With Popeye's and KFC on the other side of the road, Mr. Halal likely gets little of the "gimme some chicken" crowd, or any crowd for that matter. And it's a massive shame. Mr. Halal has fantastic chicken at a reasonable price, and I'm definitely going back for more. I arrived at lunchtime to an empty store, where the manager greeted me and made suggestions per my request. The broasted chicken is what we're known for, he said, though I wondered how many people knew about the place at all. The zinger burger is also popular. So I got both of them to go. It took 12 minutes for my four-piece broasted meal to be prepared for me. What's broasting, you ask? According to Wikipedia: "The method essentially combines pressure cooking with deep frying chicken that has been marinated and breaded. The resulting chicken is said to be crisp on the outside and moist on the inside, i.e., like traditional fried chicken but less greasy. " And they're right. What I ate was flavorful and moist, and though my fingers were not dry after holding a chicken thigh to my mouth, there was something a little healthier (or less unhealthy) to it, compared to your run-of-the-mill fried bird. The pieces were very large, the breading was delicious and crispy, the meat was juicy and savory. Half a chicken plus a roll was seven bucks. I could've gotten four pieces for less across the street, but such a meal would've been a joke in comparison to this. It would've been much less chicken at the other chains, and bad bird at that. The zinger burger was a deep-fried flattened chicken breast with a variety of toppings on a fresh bun. If anything, it had a little too much in the way of flavor. (Oh great, I'm starting to sound like a grandma visiting an Indian buffet for the first time.) Or maybe it felt that way because I was shoving it in my mouth so fast that I barely came up for air. Great stuff. The accompanying fries had a light spice to them that kept the ketchup bottle in the fridge. The manager was a friendly guy, explaining everything I wanted to know, offering to turn on the TV for me while I waited, and throwing in a sizable cup of "homemade" garlic sauce that he said was good with the chicken. It was. I'll be using that garlic sauce on other things in the next few days as well. (By "homemade," I'm sure he meant "made fresh in the store" and not "made in my kitchen at home" or "made here, which is my home, since I have a cot in the back." At least I hope not.) The entrees were so good that my wife used a superlative between bites that she's never uttered before in her life. I'll be willing to try their mozzarella sticks, fried okra, chicken egg rolls, potato samosas and pizza puff someday. Well, maybe not the pizza puff; cafeteria memories of scorched mouth-roofs still haunt me. But for now, it'll be hard to stray from what Mr. Halal claims it's known for. Regardless, it should be known. I hope the store isn't empty when I return. It deserves your business. read more

When we opened the boxes we felt like we got the wrong food. Our philly sandwiches were made with panini bread. Not the traditional hogie bun we are use to. I've never experienced all 3 things!!! EXPENSIVE FOOD RUDE/BAD-SERVICE TERRIBLE FOOD.. rice bowls are filled with black pepper that takes away your breath. And gyro is chopped up and taste like dog food. It's pure fake gyro. Also I ordered wings. Non breaded. And they gave me breaded so I've told them I asked for non breaded wings. And it took them over 30 mins. But they brought out the fries and the gyro by the time the wings came out Food was ice cold. And I've told them that. And they said don't give me that your food is hot. Witch it took them 30 mins. Good fast food, great for the younger generation who eats only Halal. Honestly the will be no culinary award here. Food has good taste. And great fast food selection. Nothing pops out as gotta drive across town to eat. The zinger burgers are well known. It took a long time to make and while waiting in their restaurant I came out smelling like really old fryer grease... brutal. The burger was not very fresh and the fries had a very unpleasant and unusual flavor to them. I couldn't even eat them and didn't finish the burger. No star for food and one star for the can of 7up. Ordered the family meal with 8 pieces/one side. The chicken was done to perfection, not at all greasy and the biscuits tasted like they had brushed the outside with honey. Biscuits were warm and flaky. Onion rings were huge and thick sliced. The staff were friendly although sometimes a bit difficult to understand while ordering on the phone due to back round noise and maybe the connection. It's a small shop, with a few tables.
