I hate to say it but I don't think I'll be coming back here unless it is THOROUGHLY cleaned and redone. There were over 100 gnats in the area they sat us in...& 10 minutes into being there we spotted cockroaches on the wall right near the kitchen door. We got up & left and even one of the staff members said "I really can't blame them". They were very apologetic, so I do appreciate that....but that won't make me want to eat there. My advice to the owner would be to get this place cleaned up before you get shut down read more

A bit on the pricey side, but the food is quite good here. I often get the Vancouver Traditional (Fancy name for Eggs Benedict) With few exceptions, the service here has been stellar. Coffee refills occur often, and staff is attentive. Only negative I would give is they aren't always too fast with bringing the check. You have to be proactive about it; don't wait for your server to ask. As for the atmosphere, this is a really cool 50's style diner. The mostly brick interior, a holdover from when this was Mary Callendar's, is also a welcome sight, though not specifically a callback to the 50's vibe. The biggest negative for me is the live music on certain nights. The acoustics in the bar are simply awful, and the cover bands overcompensate by having their microphones and instruments set obnoxiously loud. It makes them sound like screaming cats. Unfortunately, the caterwauling is distorted and reverberates throughout the restaurant. And instead of 50's music, they play the super hits of the 70's. I mean, I like the Pina Colada song, but not like this... Not like this! That nitpick aside, this is still a really great place to go! read more

Today was the first time we had been to Mr. D's in a long time. Guess we forgot why we hadn't been back since... lol. Maybe the staff was having an "off" day but the 2 people we had contact with were doing the bare minimum: the hostess and the server Example: seating us in a dark corner table and was dismissive when we asked to be moved to a booth (we did get moved, but hostess was not happy about it). It was 11am on Sunday and the restaurant was not packed. Example: server made no effort to engage... set down water and coffee, walked away, took our order, walked away, placed food down, walked away. The only friendly face we saw was the the gentlemen who refreshed our coffee. The food wasn't that great either, I am sorry to say. We had the "Fullerton" skillet and there was supposed to be sausage with it. I think we found 3 pieces of chopped up sausage. I do notice that they load up their breakfast with lots of fillers (mainly onions & potatoes, some bell peppers), but very light on the protein. Can't say we'll be back anytime soon. We love supporting our community restaurants but Mr. D's won't be one of them for a long while. read more

Been coming here since this place opened and I always gave it high ratings. Unfortunately, this time was quite different. Ordered a chicken caesar salad...wow! what a horrible salad. Chicken was hot and hard as a rock. I spit out every piece until I finally had the sense to tell the server, who was very accommodating. He got replacement chicken for me, which was also hot, but of more normal texture. A salad is supposed to be chilled, at least a bit, anyway. I am not interested in a cold salad with hot chicken mixed in. 2 stars at best. read more

You can't help but know this was a Marie Calendar's, I commend the owners for reusing the building. The interior is Faux 50 dinner, red and white with neon. James Dean & Marilyn Monroe memorabilia. The food was okay, I was there for breakfast so perhaps dinner is better. Food was bland . I requested my potatoes well done / crispy. Served anemic and pasty. Service was slow . Our server was focused on what appeared to be a table of regular customers. While this is not bad the intention to other customers was notable. I got a coupon in the mail that said buy one get one free with purchase of 2 drinks. So I went to go give the diner a try. I ordered the delicious Mediterranean omelette and our other entree was a skillet scramble. For the drinks we had coffee and tea. When we got the bill the free item was capped at $10 thought the entrees were around $15 each. I didn't recall seeing any menu item for $10 so I asked to see the menu again. My assumption was correct the only entree less than $10 was the avocado toast. This seems like a bait and switch or false advertising. The coupon is patently false. There is no way to "buy one get one free" as the coupon states. It's more like buy one get one 60% off. Unbelievable. I know it's not the waitresses fault but they should point that out before allowing us to order. The food it great, but the coupon scam is shady. The coupon should be changed to buy one get one half off, not free. This has to be violated some "truth in advertising" laws. Re: response. I did let the waitress know I thought it was shady, that was a great opportunity for her to apply the $15 instead of the $10. Still feels like bait and switch or some violation. If anyone else is reading this and fealty with similar situation please message me id like to get the details of your experience so we can remedy this. So I'm a regular there and today I had had a Cadillac Margarita. It was horrible. They pre-mixed didn't even look like a Cadillac margarita look like water. The taste was horrible. You need to go back to making the original mix of margaritas. Also the management has changed so many things have changed at the restaurant so empty I have to say this mail is a amazing bartender. I need to give her credit. so many people have left because of the management. Mr. D's is downright disgusting, dreadful, disappointing and an utter disaster. I truly don't like badmouthing a restaurant (especially after all they've been through recently because of the pandemic), but I feel it's important to be honest about my experience. Our waitress Judith was extremely rude, completely inattentive and dare I say, possibly prejudiced? Throughout our entire meal, she completely ignored us and honestly made us feel like we were non-existent. She served all the tables around us, but dismissively passed by us and purposely walked the other way multiple times. It was the strangest thing I've ever experienced at any restaurant before and it truly left us baffled. As if bad service wasn't enough, the quality of the food is beyond terrible. The pancakes are rubbery instead of airy, the coffee is super watery, and my sausage links were still frozen. When I brought the latter to another waiter's attention (because naturally, Judith was nowhere to be found...), the staff kept passing me along to another employee, so I literally had to show the frozen links at least four different times before they finally replaced them. It's pretty evident they have no quality control over their food and worst yet, they seem really unsanitary in their food practices. It's appalling that they still leave their condiments out in large communal bottles for anyone to manhandle during these times, but if that's not enough, their staff doesn't seem to care about wearing masks or social distancing. Do yourself a favor and do not go here. If I had to guess what the D stands for, it's DON'T. Just don't. read more

Second time is no charm. Second time was garbage. We had some good breakfast burritos here last year and decided to order some for pick up again. Mr. D's also operates as the Bed & Breakfast Burrito Co. on DoorDash. It's all from the same kitchen and you pick up directly inside from Mr. D's- it just has a "cooler" name on DoorDash to grab those going for breakfast burritos. Problem is, the food was terrible this time. The portion size was big, but it was mostly just egg so who cares? And the tortilla was ripped in several locations so it made it impossible to hold and eat. Not what I look for when ordering a breakfast burrito. You know what else I don't look for? Burnt bacon. The bacon breakfast burrito had almost no bacon, but when I did come across bacon it was terrible. It was burnt to the point of being disgusting. And then there's the sausage. The worst I've ever had. Ever. It tasted like old soap. I don't know why, but it was so gross. My wife was nice enough to try it and see if it was just me or what- the look on her face confirmed it wasn't just me. Massive failure. Second time here was the last time. We love Mr D's! We usually sit in the bar area and both Angela & Melanie are great! They both work very hard to keep their customers happy. This includes those at the bar top and those at the tables. This was our second time here. I'll start by saying Maggie is the sweetest smiley-est server I've ever had. I decided to try the chilaquiles. They were definitely not what I expected. It was more like green sauce over chips and sides of eggs, rice, beans, and tortillas/toast/potatoes/pancakes. I tried to like it but it just wasn't good to me. I asked for the chicken avocado sandwich instead and it is AMAZING! And the fries are so good! So glad the chilaquiles didn't work out. My daughter really enjoyed her chocolate chip pancakes and my husband liked his Denver omlet. I know this won't be the last time we are here. read more

Great food when you order food but horrible management. Had very bad experience in Fulton location with an unrult guest. Asked management to help but told us we would have to move instead. As an ada guest that wasn't an option. Instead they would rather let loud and obnoxious guests disturb dinners as they eat. First off, Tonya H. couldn't be more incorrect about the bartender. Angela is the only reason we still go to Mr. D's. She's the only reason I'm giving the diner a 3 Star rating. The food is just so so. The cleanliness of the restrooms is disgusting but that's not on the wait staff, that should be on management. It takes forever to be seated because there's never anyone at the front register. The wait staff in the rest of the diner is rude, lazy and generally dismissive of my husband and me. When we show up and see the bar lights off, we promptly turn around, climb back in the car, and go somewhere else. We used to go to D's several times a week now we typically go 1 or 2 times a week. It's shame. Open the bar up earlier and make sure Angela is the one to do it, we just love her. :) read more

Fabulous breakfast here, we had a wait for our orders as we were starving and then they forgot the chocolate chips in my pancakes. I ate my veggie scramble first, and then when I tasted those chocolate chip pancakes, they were worth the wait!! I wish I lived closer to this place, I'd be there frequently. The inside is really cute, it reminded me of "Happy Days" or an old diner style. I love supporting smaller mom and pop restaurants and Mr D's fit the bill. We went today for brunch and they had all of our usual favorite brunch foods. We enjoyed our meals. My husband had a skillet and I had pancakes. Great potion sizes and better tasting than a big box restaurant. Loved the diner vibe and old school diner decor. We also saw Eric the Red Magician who was coming to tables and doing magic which was also an added bonus. What a fantastic addition Mr. D's has been to the Placentia community. The food is good, the atmosphere is nostalgic, and the service is wonderful. We ordered traditional diner food - a club sandwich, cheeseburger, California chicken melt, and a chipotle chicken wrap. The club sandwich and cheeseburger were so delicious, and the other two entrees were fairly good. The fries are thick cut, seasoned to perfection, and so yummy! Prices are reasonable for food and HH prices are cheap! We spent about $70 (including 20% tip) on 4 entrees, a soda, and 2 adult beverages. Every entree comes with soup as well (love the tomato bisque). That's a helluva bargain these days IMO. read more

Stopped by in the morning to take advantage of their breakfast specials available before 9:30 am. They have a huge sign advertising two specials. As I walked in, there's no one to greet you, After about five minutes a waiter walked by and I mentioned that I wanted one of the specials to go. Out of view, I heard him mention my order to someone else. It turned out to be the hostess. She asked me what I needed and I again mentioned my order. I waited about 20 minutes in the lobby. She approached me again what I ordered and I repeated my order for the third time. She then mentioned that the specials were for dine in only. There's no stipulation mentioned on either of the two signs. She insisted that it was. As I was leaving the restaurant hungry and empty handed, I looked up at the signs again and there's no stipulation indicating "dine in only". The hostess could have mentioned that at the beginning of the encounter, She made me wait more than 20 minutes to turn away a potential future customer. read more

I love the atmosphere. They have an old fashioned car in the west side of the restaurant and I think you can even sit and eat in there. I usually just order a ribeye breakfast, which comes with the steak, tater tots, scrambled eggs, and pancakes. They give a lot of food. Sometimes a mango cart on tap. First time trying Mr. D and sadly disappointed.. I came here with boyfriend on a Tuesday night. Walking in we were greeted by no one at the host stand, had to wait a couple of minutes until someone noticed we were waiting to be seated. Once we were seated a waiter came to ask for our drink orders and never introduced himself. As we were trying to decide what to order we were bothered by a fly that wouldn't leave us alone, mind you we were sitting inside. Once the waiter came back we ordered a pastrami melt with a garden salad and the beefeater with their corn chowder. The waiter gave me a hard time ordering the garden salad, on their menu it says i can substitute a garden salad from choosing their fries, Coleslaw or fruit. I explained to the waiter about 3 times that i didn't want fries or coleslaw i wanted to substitute it for a salad. I even read back what was on the menu to the waiter, i ended up just giving up and got fruit and a salad because he was getting argumentative and he couldn't understand the menu. We finally got our food and the salad had so many rotten pieces of lettuce in it, the ranch had a weird sour taste to it. The pastrami melt was okay, nothing too special. My boyfriend got the beefeater which is basically a beef dip. He said it was the worst beef dip he has ever had. It was so dry. The corn chowder he got on the side tasted like it was from a can, nothing special. Overall, the customer service we experienced was poor and the food was inadequate. I am So happy each night to walk by their lovely tents and happy customers now. I took my very picky teenage for brunch one weekend. I want to start off by saying I really like Mr D's. They have a good happy hour and really good breakfast. We have been coming here almost since it open and always enjoyed it. Reason for why I am giving only one star or should I say one star for the bartender tonight. Happy hour well drinks are $5 so we ordered two well Vodka and grapefruit when we got the bill bartender charged us $15. Asked her why they were $7.50 each and not $5. She said they charge extra for grapefruit. I let her know as long as we been coming here no other bartender has ever charged us extra for well vodka and grapefruit. For matter of fact no other bar I ever been to charges extra for well vodka and grapefruit. I asked her, a well drink is your well liquor plus a mix, right? She said yes, but we charge extra for grapefruit. So I asked if I got any other mix it would only be $5 she said correct. I let her know there was no where on the menu that they charge extra for grapefruit and she never told us they charge $2.50 for 1 ounce of grapefruit. They really must use a very high premium grapefruit that they can charge $2.50 ounce that is $80.00 for 32oz bottle of grapefruit juice So if you order a well drink just don't order grapefruit juice with it, unless you want to pay extra $2.50 read more
