After some research I determined that the issue was that the fans were probably either dead or failing and needed to be replaced. It did take almost 2 weeks for my laptop to be repaired as it is a computer that he doesn't usually work on so he didn't have spare parts just lying around (completely cool - I knew that was doing to happen).
