My favorite go to restaurant for 50 years! The food has always been excellent. I had the pork chop special tonight and the pork was so tender with a delicious char on the outside. The baked potato was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and the zucchini/squash was yummy. Their salads are always fresh and I love their balsamic vinegar dressing. I have been hearing about Mr G's since I started working in NL over 10 years ago. It is a local favorite. My coworker had a grinder from there last week so I thought I'd give them a try today. They have a pretty extensive menu with something for everyone. Online ordering was easy, everything was ready pretty quickly. Pick up was a breeze. My roast beef grinder was good and everything was fresh. The grinder was a good size that I saved part of it for later. I also ordered a Greek salad. It was a large salad, covered in a good amount of dressing. I would have liked a more crumbled kinda feta on the salad. The salad was average. The prices are fair for the generous portions given. I'd definitely come back again and try other things on their menu. read more

WHAT??? WHY??? After growing up in and spending so much time in New England how did I find the world's BEST fried scallops on top of a PIZZA while sitting at a bar near the Coast Guard Academy? I almost didn't want to write this review because I don't want anyone else to know. Consider me shocked! Honestly, I was disappointed when I saw that the scallop and bacon pizza came out with red sauce. I was a little grossed out. I never imagine that combo. I was thinking it would be a white pizza but I guess I didn't read the menu. But, I picked one of those scallops off the pizza and I no longer cared! I immediately removed all the scallops off the pizza and into my plate so that my partner (who ordered the fish sandwich) wouldn't get any! Thee juicy, tasty, succulent deep fried circles of joy had my eyes rolling in the back of my head and looking at my calendar to see when I could make time to come back for another meal of just the scallops. I ate them all except two, which I'm begrudgingly let him try. I didn't even want to try his fish. "I don't care what that tastes like, I've achieved mouth nirvana over here." After collecting myself, I did try the pizza, which by now was just bacon and DAMN! It was some quality bacon! And a ton of it. The pizza was good, too. (Although I bet it would have been good as a white pizza all together...just saying.). I guess the clam pizza is white. We did reheat the pizza the next day and it was still awesome. More typical New England style Greek pizza, but not as crunchy/hard/tough/dry edged as most of your basic "House of" places. I also heard that the fish sandwich was fresh and delicious. Whatever. I'm #TeamScallops. We sat at the bar, it was Saturday afternoon, 10/29/22, and I'm sorry to the lovely female bartender with the gorgeous mane of dark hair because I can't remember your name because I would hire you in an instant! She has a great personality, an eye for when you need something, good timing and that particular New England quick "hustle" that is a rarity in customer service these days! She's accommodating but I bet if the locals got out of hand, she could take care of it herself. YOU ROCK! This will become our first go-to when we are in town again. Gave two stars only b/c the food was decent. Our waiter Maddi provided us with terrible service. Went in to get a quick dinner nonetheless to get any recognition after sitting down. Ordered our beverages for it to be sitting under the drink dispensar for 10 mins whilst our server carried conversation with the foot traffic coming in and out of the dining area. Had to reorder the drinks as they were watered down and was met with an attitude. We had overheard the loud conversations she was having about running out of the restaurant as soon as her shift ends at 9pm (time is now 8:30ish at this point) and explaining an experience she had with bad service at a restaurant but yet she she failed to provide good quality service herself as a server. Ordered buffalo wings as an app to get plain wings and had to ask for hot sauce. Never have I ever not left a tip for my serve until tonight as it was only right. Asked for the servers name as it was not provided first hand and as my party was walking out we overhead conversation of her expressing we would be leaving a review as we sure hell did. I am very disappointed in this place. Been around for a long time and the food and people are the same. They have not advanced or changed to the world around them. No wonder everyone in the place is overweight, unhealthy and I could hear their arteries clogging as I waited for my food! The pizza was all bread and no toppings or cheese. Cheap, greasy and disturbing in taste. The "buffalo wings" are not buffalo wings. They are small and all breading! I'm sure the oil they were cooked in is as old as the joint! After eating here two times I got a better feel for Mr. G's. They have a pretty wide menu here that includes pizza, salads, numerous appetizers, burgers, etc. It's a true ma and pa shop in appearance and has been a staple in the area from what I can see for a long time. The servers are super friendly and courteous even when under pressure. This is second time I had pizza at this shop. I found the Hawaiian pizza superb! Some might complain that it's now "Hawaiian" because they use canned pineapple on top but let this man who's lived in Hawaii that some of the few pizza place in Hawaii used canned pinapple as topping too. If burgers are your thing, they are large and in charge here! May be on my agenda for my next visit!! I will add that the Hawaiian and chicken BBQ pizzas are excellent choices here! Traveled to Connecticut with a college sports team for a Saturday game. Called on Friday to let them know I had a big order for Saturday. They told me to place the order online on Saturday. When you order through the website you can only schedule for 45 minutes in advance so right before I hit submit I called to let them know I didn't need the order for another 3 1/2 hours. They were okay with this until I mentioned we are a college sports team. They said they only do certain orders for teams and would only be able to provide me with pizzas. If I never mentioned we were a team they were going to let me submit my $300+ order, but because the order was for a team they could only do pizza?? They told me they already had a few big orders and I didn't give them enough notice. Again, I called the day before. Maybe this place needs to get with the times and allow orders to be placed a day in advance? Although it was an inconvenience, we ended up taking our $300 to another restaurant. I ordered here once before, got something I didn't like, and never tried again. Then, today, I REALLY wanted a gyro, so I ordered it here, because I figured greek restaurant = good gyro. Not only was I right, it might've been the best gyro I've EVER had. Like it was so perfectly packaged, tons of sauce, tons of tomatoes and lettuce, and the beef was so juicy without being greasy. Can't recommend it enough. I think they really just need to pair down their menu a little, because what they know how to make, they make REALLY well, but don't order like potato salad or anything like that. read more

I've been coming here for decades. No idea how it is that I've never reviewed Mr. G's, so here it is finally! The bar is decent with a respectable selection of beers and all the usual other things, including sports on TV. The dining room is a bit dated in comparison to a place that may have been built in the last 20 years, but I would hope that it never changes and stays the way it is forever. It's part of the charm of the place that it is so comfortable and unpretentious. Service is always excellent. And then there's the food. Oddly I've never had anything other than Pizza or Grinders here and have always thought they were excellent. In particular, the fried scallop and bacon pizza I had the other night is probably my favorite pizza (yes I like it even more than the Mousaka pizza at a few of the Greek Pizza places nearby!) The grinders are good sized with fresh ingredients and delicious hot or cold. My mom enjoys their lasagna and I have to agree it is one of the best restaurant lasagnas I've ever tried. She tells me that she also loves the scrod on the menu. They also have regular specials, an enormous menu and TV's in the dining room playing sports most of the time. There aren't a lot of places like Mr G's left and thankfully they're still going strong after who knows how long. It is the perfect combination of a traditional comfortable family restaurant, excellent food, decent portions, excellent service and fair prices. If I move back to the area it will be in part so I can come here more often! Love this place! They deserve the rare 5 star review! read more

Mr. G's has been a staple in the New London community for years. I remember coming here in 1992 when I was at the Coast Guard Academy. This is a favorite spot for many Cadets. Fast forward over 20 years and I am back. This place did not miss a beat. It has its own parking lot and you can park on the street too. There is ample seating in the restaurant and it has a full bar attached to it on the opposite side. I was eating light and just had a Caesars Salad. It was one of the best I ever had. The waitress was also very attentive and keep my drink cup full. Everyone in my part of 4 enjoyed their meal. This restaurant is not only a piece of history for me, but a great place to get a good meal. If you are in New London, you should definitely check it out. read more

Sorry, but the service to take orders over the phone is very bad. The person answering the phone does not strain at all. I confirmed my order of grill chicken sandwich with Caesar salad. I called again 14 times to add mayonnaise and they never answered. When I went to pick up my order, it wasn't ready because they never took the order. It is not the first time this happens. Ordered a couple of small subs. Their small are like larges, end of their larges are to too big to eat giant sandwiches. They take about 15 minutes to be ready which is fine. The only bad thing is that the upon going into the establishment and walking out with said sandwiches, you look like you're walking out of a bar with a sixpack wrapped up. The turkey was ordered with everything. The meatballs with provolone and sauce and mayo. These are really good bread that sort of crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. There's a high-quality provolone cheese that they use that is delicious. Meatballs are softened by the sauce who's in the sauce is tangy and sweet but not too salty. So we always stop at Mr. G's every time we have a meet in the New London area. (I run track and cross country.) So maybe I'm spoiled and have only lived in real metropolitan areas in my life, but Mr. G's just doesn't cut it in my opinion. The building is very dark, and has only really small windows at the top of the walls. It made the entire dining area look like a basement, as my friend pointed out. The food is average. The pizza is normal pizza. In the trip I just got back from, I got the Chicken Parmigiana grinder. It was really big, but also slightly plain. Nothing on the side either, just the sandwich. Prices weren't really cheap either. They're up to $10 a person for dinner, not that I was paying. read more

Excellent service and excellent food! Huge crew of us went without reservations. The service was the best and the food came out fast and HOT! Shout out to Deana our waitress! I tried the "Buffalo chicken pot stickers" (who knew such a dish existed?!?) and they were yummy. I also had some Greek lemon chicken soup that quite honestly I've thought about stopping by again just to take some for lunch! It was perfect! Really hit or miss... I've had a couple decent lunches here. The strombolis are good. This evening I swung in for dinner with my family. I was thinking we'd grab a quick bite before I head to work. The dining room was about two-thirds full - busy but not crazy. We were there nearly an hour before getting our food, and our order was only a couple small cheese pizzas and a sandwich. The wait staff is courteous enough, but they never came by to check on drinks, apologize for the wait, or explain the delay. We probably should have just left, but I was pressed for time and I assumed that the food would come soon enough. I was wrong. My order was confirmed on-line and the THREE times I checked on it the woman kept telling me 10 minutes more. I ended up getting a message from the online ordering service telling me that mu order was cancelled, so I ended up waiting over 1/2 hour with the hostess and chefs telling me 10 more minutes for an order they had actually cancelled. I would stop down there so I didn't have to go to some hip bar while I wait for my wife to get off work. So I ordered a hot pastr. grinder. and a sm. N.E. clam chowder. and a drink. Well after my wife called she asked me to order her some mozzuarella sticks so she would have a bite to eat after work and we could enjoy a drink. Well my grinder came out cold had to ask her to heat it up they heated it in the microwave you could tell by the partially hot and cold. And the chowder helping was so small it might fill a baby food jar. And i got a jamason on the rocks. Well after talking to my wife on the phone she asked me to order her some Mozzerella sticks for when she got there after work. So after i ordered them. I said I would be right back going out for a smoke. Well didn't have a light so went to enter the bar at and the door was locked 10:30pm. Bars in ct. usually stay open till 12-1 am but can stay open till 2 am by state law. I was like WTF? So I walked in, went to order another drink waiting for my wife and they said we're closing. REALLY I said yeah. I told her the only reason I ordered the Sticks was so my wife and I could have a drink and something to munch. We enjoying visiting Mr. G's when driving through New London. It's a good sit down restaurant for dinner. (They now offer breakfast on the weekends). They have a bar area in a separate room on the left and a family oriented dinning room on the right with tables and booths. Great casual place to eat!
