First time in, picked up Frozen Tamales made in house lots of varieties I got Tofu and Sunflower seed. These are the BEST Veggie Tamales I've ever.....ever had. also picked up some cookies on sale they tasted great lightly sweetened with Agave. The kitchen employee told me the best way to heat the tamales....and like I said....they were great. Menu looks really healthy and lots of variety. I was one of their first customers when they opened in 1988 and have been going back ever since. In 1992 when I got my first job and finally had money, I went and bought one of everything in the bakery case. The offerings are extremely broad: a complete TexMex menu, a large bakery/pastry case, cakes and pies, soft serve ice cream, smoothies, juices, all of it vegetarian and most of it vegan. The owners ran a restaurant in Mexico before coming here, by the way. It's not perfect: one more than one occasion our refried beans had soured, some of the baked items have way too much sugar (like the brownies) even for someone with a sweet tooth, and once a pre-ordered cake wasn't ready for pickup for our kids' party (but the owner then rushed it and hand-delivered it to the event). But even with the occasional hiccups, I just have a really strong attachment to Mr. Natural. read more

This was the second meal we had in Austin. As awesome in its own way as the first (Peace bakery). It's funny they are both bakeries. Both places are the form factor we like the most since we have kids. Order at the counter/cafeteria style. Very casual, but the food is great and the prices are amazing. I opted for a lunch special and chose items from the cafeteria line. My husband ordered something off the menu. The food is excellent and healthy at the same time. We also bought a whole bunch of the baked items, which were healthier versions of Mexican treats. Very well done. Our favorite was probably the pumpkin empanada. I've always passed by the cesar chavez location and wanted to try it! We got the vegan relleno, chile relleno, vegan veggie fajitas plate, and vegan spinach enchiladas w/ salsa verde. All with black beans! Vegan relleno was pretty good! It was a bit spicy with the sauce. I like the sweetness of the raisins and crunchiness of the nuts. The chile relleno was also good, mashed potatoes with corn and a lot of cheese. Veggie fajitas were tasted as you'd expect seitan to taste. But the rest of the veggies were flavorful (mushrooms, onions, green bell peppers). All of us liked the mexican brown rice! It was unique. Still to be tasted is the vegan spinach enchiladas... Today I took a delicious and magical vegan blackberry danish for later. My partner has joyfully visited mr natural since the early 90s. She literally, genuinely, actually cries into her beans when we visit because they are so perfect. I get it and agree. I grew up eating Durango Mexican foods. I walked in to get ice cream and they were out. For that reason alone I want to give them 3-stars but their food is okay. They could work on the flavor aspect. I never knew vegetarian Mexican food could be so freakin' tasty. I get cravings for Mr. Natural. I love their soya guisada, tofu pipian, and tofu a la Mexicana. It's all about their soy textures and sauces. My mouth waters when I think about their spinach salad with avocado yogurt dressing. It's a good deal: $6.50 for their lunch combo specials, and (I believe) about a dollar more for their dinner combos. You get a salad, a main dish, two sides, and a tortilla with salsa. You never leave the place hungry, but you don't feel stuffed either. In fact, there's something invigorating about their food. This was my first experience with Mr. Natural. I had been wanting to try it for tears, and wanted something healthier after a walk around ladybird lake. After we order we sat down and enjoyed our horchata, they were pretty good and refreshing... once they started running pretty low we realized that our food is taking a while. We look over and once one of the staff members sees us she scrambles to the kitchen window and starts checking on our order. An older lady working there walks into the kitchen, then comes out to us and asks for the name on the order. My girlfriend tells her the name she goes back there, comes back and asks what we ordered. Kind of annoyed at this point I tell her, "nachos and a sandwich." She rushes back to the kitchen and then comes back, "its almost out." Once we got our order, my girlfriend tells them they forgot the cheese, on the sandwich they obviously rushed together, cause they totally forgot about us. I was ver unimpressed by the nachos. The toppings were ok. The meat substitutes was actually pretty good. Vegan queso was surprisingly tasty. The chips were floppy store bought, that ended up all soggy. For $40 lunch I would expect a better quality product. At the end seeing as they forgot about us and my girlfriend drank all of her horchata, she asked if she could possibly get a refill, they said they don't do refills. I've been dining at Mr. Natural for about 5 years now, so this review is a bit overdue. I have a lot to say, so I'll break it down into categories. For starters, the NICEST family owns this restaurant. They are all so sweet and kind and always make me feel super welcome. - Lunch Menu: Lunch is served up cafeteria style, where you go to the counter and pick out what main dish you want, as well as sides. The menu changes each day of the week (which can be found on their website listed as "weekly lunch special menu"). My favorite is on Saturdays when they offer the Milanesa and the Tofu Pipian. - Dinner Menu: For dinner, you sit down and order from the menu. I love their tamales and their refried beans are so excellent! - Thanksgiving Eve Dinner: Each Thanksgiving the restaurant cooks up home-made veggie turkey with gravy and a bunch of side dishes (mashed potatoes, rosemary squash, cranberry sauce, green beans...). So much food for only $12. - First Sunday Vegan Brunch Buffet: For the last year or so, Mr. Natural has been doing a brunch on the first Sunday of every month. The menu is always changing up and sometimes their are themes (recently there was an Italian theme). They usually always offer their fried seitan chicken with agave-mustard (seriously my favorite). They post the menu to their facebook page. I've been to about 5 or 6 of them and always leave there absolutely stuffed on yumminess. I don't know how they keep out-doing themselves, finding more creative ideas to add to the menu. Again, so much food and the price is only $17. You can go back up for seconds or thirds or fourths.... There is always a great dessert spread too. - Bakery: Where to start? It's all amazing. Mini chocolate donuts. Bavarian cream cones. Tiramisu. Tres leches cake. Strawberry shortcake... Most things in their bakery are vegan or can be made vegan. I order all of my cakes from here. I'm in love with the coconut cake. My favorite thing about it is the light and fluffy icing, the kind you can eat without getting a stomach ache. So naturally, I ordered 4-tiers of it for my wedding. It was beautifully decorated with fondant flowers. The baker, Jesus, is amazingly talented at decorating cakes. I recently had him make me a tiramisu cake with a chestburster coming out of it for my husbands birthday! It was insane! -Catering: I also hired Mr. Natural to cater my wedding. We veered off the traditional restaurant menu and had caesar salad, roasted potatoes, green beans with almonds, fried seitan chicken with agave-mustard, lasagna and macaroni and cheese (everything vegan). The food was fabulous as was working with Jesus to design the menu and do a taste-testing before hand. So to recap: Awesome food! Definitely go to one of the Sunday brunches! Super nice family! I've heard about Mr. Natural for years. For some reason, despite having been a vegetarian in Austin for a total of three+ years, I had never been there until last week. In June, a friend texted me from Mr. Natural to say that their vegetarian tamales were "awesome!!!!!!", so of course I added it to my mental list (of places to ingest enchiladas). Then my boyfriend and I excitedly went there one weekend, looking forward to a nice vegan brunch, only to discover that the place is closed on Sundays. (Boooooo!) We made another pilgrimage this Saturday for a late lunch, and were not disappointed. Not only was the famous vegemexican place open, but it was delicious. I had originally planned to order something more breakfast-y, like pancakes, but of course, if enchiladas are on offer, I have to eat them. Right? I had the mixed veggie enchiladas (they also have dairy cheese and tofu on the menu) with mole sauce (other choices being ranchera, roja, and verde). Since mole is one of those things I never have at home, I decided to go for it, and it was excellent. The enchiladas had a welcomely diverse mixture of vegetables tucked inside, including broccoli and mushrooms, and the rice and beans were great, too. I think the only thing that might've improved it was to put onions in the enchilada, rather than just providing a single half-slice with the side salad. The boy ordered the albondigas, and, while I only pilfered one forkful, I can verify that they were quite substantial and flavorful. I immediately thought that this might be the right dish to present to my skeptical omnivorous parents on their next visit. I mean, look at it. I liked their spinach pineapple Agua Fresca. Vegan chicken fry was tasty. Salads were good. Biscuits and gravy were not that good. Taco and enchilada was fine. Vanilla soft serve was nice but not as creamy as the one in sweet ritual. Overall, an excellent buffet. Their bakery is excellent. We had been there another day. The vegan tiramisu was so yummy! It was soft, flavorful, delicious, and not at all heavy. The pineapple empanada and Danish fruit something was mild flavor and not too sugary. Coconut cake is soft and creamy - it'll melt in your mouth! Carrot cake is more dense and flavorful. The chocolate or strawberry tres leches cake is so delicious! I finally decided to give it a second chance and....holy crap! All I can figure is I must have been PMS'ing when I went to the other Mr. Natural. You know, I must have been like, "Tofu!? Tofu?!? Foo! I ordered from Mr. Natural using DoorDash so I can't speak about the ambience of the place. But I ordered the Burger Boss and BBQ Sandwich. The menu that was on DoorDash apparently isn't updated because when you order on there, your order is supposed to come with a side of chips & salsa or french fries but I guess that's not the case anymore. Mr. Natural's updated their menu so I guess that change wasn't reflected on DoorDash yet, that was kinda annoying. Apparently those are extras now. For the price I paid for the burger/sandwich and then to not come with sides was very expensive. I would not pay that much for that little food (even though the burgers were fairly big). The food was okay. Personally, my patty in the Burger Boss was a little hard and I hate when that happens. I am not from the Austin metroplex but I think you could find a better alternative elsewhere in the city. read more

This place is such a hidden gem!!! Totally not what you would expect walking in the door, although I try not to have expectations! I've driven passed it so many times & just didn't ever come in. The sign that captivated me was vegan soft serve! Finally popped in after 5 months of living here in Austin. Greeted by the super friendly Jack, very down to earth and genuine, could tell he cared about his job from the get go. On the left we have an array of kombuchas and other healthy beverages with some frozen tamales to take home. Walk more to the front and there is the vegan bakery case, ice cream, and order station for other food items. The food took forever to come out, was cold and bland, they got our order wrong four times, and the owner had such a nasty attitude about it at the end - as if it was our fault that their own staff and kitchen couldn't get it right. This entire time, we were respectful, understanding, and really wanted to give this place a chance. Such a disappointment. The food was not anything special, and it took 45 min to get my order, which was completely wrong. When I politely mentioned it to the person working there, she rolled her eyes and took it without saying anything. I came here around noon on Memorial Day. The place wasn't too busy but had a couple other customers. Service: Food is served cafeteria style where someone behind the counter puts food on your plate for you. Solid service. The lady helped me when I had questions about a couple of the food options (I'm not a vegetarian). Food: I ordered the lunch special fajitas, which felt a little weird, considering there was no meat. The "meat" was some sort of bean and was not terribly disgusting, but not something I would ever opt to eat again (as a non-Vegetarian). For my sides, I got the black beans and a gordita. They were just so-so. Atmosphere: It's pretty chill. You do put away your own plates and such, so it's definitely a lax environment. Parking: Easy and right in front. I paid about $9 for my food. Overall, not my favorite meal. I have been to vegetarian places that taste great and are perfectly okay without meat, but this place made me miss meat more (how about that for an alliteration). Wait...this is good for me?! How did I not know about this place before? I went to Mr. Natural for a business dinner and was already excited because my colleague raved about the place, but it wasn't what I expected. It was better! I had the taco salad, which is a hearty serving of goodness. The shell was filled with beans (I chose black), veggie choritzo, brown rice, lettuce, guacamole and I chose to top it with tofu. It was delicious and very fresh! It was a yummy blend of a lot of distinct flavors that made it hard for me to stop stuffing my face. As I said, it was a hearty serving, and I was only able to finish half of it! The restaurant is spacious with a market on one side and an enticing baked goods display. The customer service also was very good. The only con about my experience was the cupcake I got for dessert. I tried the carrot cake, but it didn't have the usual carrots and nut bits that I expected, and the frosting was a little stiff. My dislike might have been because I'm used to gluten or the cupcake wasn't as fresh as it could be so I would definitely be open to trying more flavors. There are definitely more things on their menu that I want to try, so I'll definitely be back! read more
