My friends and I walked in to no one at the front and being told by outside customers that we had to put our names in the waitlist. We did. More people started coming and then they suddenly changed it and asked us to form a line. I asked if we were going to be going by the waitlist or the line because we had got there before some of the people who were in front of us in line and we had our name on the waitlist before them and they said we were still going to have to wait in line so we had to wait behind the other people who got there after us. Once we finally sat down we weren't even given menus. They sat two other tables down and gave them menus before we had to flag someone down to get some. I placed an order of edamame but never got it. I didn't get charged for it but it just added onto the frustration. When we got our ramen there were barely any noodles in it. There was more corn than there was noodles. It tasted good but it wasn't worth all the issues we were facing. It was a hot day in Little Tokyo around noon today, and my friends and I were searching high and low for a cold noodle place to cool off at for lunch. We originally asked Orochon Ramen if they still offered hiyashi chuka, but the lady said they no longer serve cold noodles on the menu. However, she said she used to work at Mr. Ramen and recommended it for the best cold ramen in Little Tokyo. So onwards we went to Mr. Ramen, passing by the large hoards of people waiting to eat at popular spots like Marugame Monzo and Daikokuya. We were first greeted with a nice hit of cool A/C and a warm welcome from the staff. The large mural art on the walls was cool, and they had small cute drawings from guests hung up on the wall as well. It wasn't super busy like the other restaurants, so I felt comfortable taking my mask off to cool down a bit after walking under the sweltering sun. The cold ramen I was searching for was on the menu with either ponzu or miso dressing, so I opted for the cold ramen with ponzu. My cold ramen took about 15 minutes to come out, and it was absolutely delicious! The ponzu dressing was very refreshing and paired well with the cold chewy ramen noodles, crunchy strips of cucumber, diced tomatoes, seaweed, egg, and strips of cold chashu pork. The portions were not huge for the price, but it was enough for a light cooling lunch. The staff were really attentive and easy to get service (for ordering, water refills, the check, taking away plates). They have a small bathroom in the back before the kitchen, and it was nice and clean. I would definitely come back to Mr. Ramen for the cold ramen again! I feel like it may not be as well known as the other super popular places in Little Tokyo, but it's definitely a hidden gem. read more

I noticed that Mr. Ramen was not crowded and we were immediately seated by a super- friendly hostess. We looked at the menu that was in their window so we knew what to order right away. You would expect some traditional Japanese decor around, and there is, but this place had some AMAZING artwork on its right wall. On the opposite wall there is another menu as well as some amazing customer artwork! On to the food! My oldest son got their pork fried rice. It was really good and plentiful. It also came with a choice of either miso soup or salad. He went with the miso soup. My daughter ordered the children's ramen and gyoza #1 combo. My other son and I ordered their tonkotsu ramen #16 and the broth was rich, the noodles cooked just right and their pork belly cut thicker than other nearby ramen joints. They're are 3 different size options. It was all reasonably priced and we also received 3 different anime lunch mats. I don't know what the promotion was but from 12/16-1/8, a lot of stores are giving these away. The staff are super friendly and I think the hostess was appreciative that I spoke Japanese to her! Not a Ramen connoisseur but I know what I like and Mr. Ramen did not disappoint. They are tucked away in the heart of Littlie Tokyo. Keep your eyes peeled for this hidden gem especially as many of the outdoor dining tents make it a little difficult to see all the names of these restaurants. They have indoor and outdoor dining. Meters surround the area. For a Friday evening, we easily found a parking spot on one of the meters walking distance to the place. It was relatively busy but we were quickly seated. I definitely recommend starting off with edamame that is covered in their house sauce. It's so addicting. I don't usually do spicy but this was the perfect amount of spice that made it enjoyable to eat. We ended up pouring some of the leftover sauce from the edamame into our soup and rice as it was that good. We did the hot ramen combo with gyoza and curry rice. They have their cold ramen and hot ramen options along with their bento and rice option dishes. I did the Miso Ramen which was delicious. I can still taste the flavor! The noodles were perfect and the serving size was great. I did a few add on's for the soup but was glad the soup already included most of the delicious stuff I would normally add on in other places. Glad this place knew whats up. We did their sake and beer. They recommended itami onigoroshi sake and it did not disappoint. Definitely adding this to my alcohol list. All in all, I would go back. The host and staff were all nice and attentive. You could taste the authenticity of the food. On Friday nights, Mr. Ramen (and many other restaurants in Little Tokyo) experience long waits and crowds. Make sure you give yourself enough time, my friend and I waited about 30 minutes before being seated. They have about 4 seats (2 for small parties and 2 for larger parties - seating about 6). I ordered the Mapo Tofu ramen. I didn't really enjoy it. I felt like the tofu was an after thought - cut and topped onto the ramen. I wished it was flavored a little better; like in traditional mapo tofu dishes. My friend liked the shoyu broth. I felt like the servers were very friendly and accommodating. I came back here 2 more times after the first during my trip to California because the first impression was just so heartwarming and pleasant. I didn't have a wallet after having my cards and license stolen, but the owner was kind enough to offer a bowl of ramen on the house. Talk about outstanding customer service!!!
