As you can probably tell from my other reviews, I'm a big believer in supporting good restaurants--especially local, Black-owned spots. I had a serious sweet tooth today and decided to drive across town to my favorite bakery, SRP, only to realize that I didn't pay attention to the time and they were closed. So, I figured this was the perfect opportunity to try something new and support another local business. So I headed to Yelp to see what else was open on the area and saw that Ms. Ruby's Bakery were open until 8PM, and with 51 minutes to spare, I headed over. When I pulled up at 7:15, it looked a little dark inside, but the "open" sign was glowing and a man was sitting at the counter--so I got out and walked up to the door. The moment I opened it, he looked at me and said, "I'm closed." No "hello," no "sorry, we're closing early tonight"--just "I'm closed." I was caught off guard by his tone and demeanor but I was especially caught off guard because the posted hours clearly said 8PM. The lights weren't just dim, they were intentionally turned down--clearly signaling he was done serving for the night. Honestly, I wish he'd just locked the door. But I was already there, sweet tooth raging, and didn't want the trip to be for nothing. After telling me he was closed, he glanced at the fridge and said, "Unless you want cake--I can sell you that." I said, "Actually, that's exactly what I came for." I told him the slice I wanted, he rang me up, and... that was it. No "thank you," no "have a good night"--nothing. I immediately regretted the purchase. This isn't how you show up for your customers, and I shouldn't have rewarded poor service. As I sit outside of Ms. Ruby's Bakery, writing this at 7:25PM, I'm watching him lock up and head to his car. It's disheartening knowing I won't be back. As a fellow business owner, I know the importance of kindness and respect in customer service. I'll keep choosing to spend my money where both the product and the people are worth it. read more

The food here was delicious! I had the catfish with hush puppies and a side salad, and my husband had the shrimp po-boy with fries. The fries were what I'd call REAL potatoes! Everything cooked fresh, great crunch to the fish. And very filling. Not that empty kings fast-food stuff. Very friendly young man at the register as well. I've been coming to this place since it was called Coleman's back in the days. I probably get tacos from here once or twice a week. The ground beef tacos are fire with a lot of meat, you'll probably only need two to fill you up even if you're greedy like me. The burgers are huge and well seasoned. I like that they use fresh ingredients and vegetables like the green leaf lettuce on the burgers and tacos. This is a black owned business so please support our brothers and sisters who run this place. It's just a small location for great to go food. I stumbled upon this place by accident when looking for somewhere good to eat, and I am so glad I did. Every single thing my husband and I got was amazing! The tacos are so good! My kids keep asking when we can go back because they absolutely loved their chilli cheese fries, and one order was enough to feed 2 kids, so my wallet loves that. I remember having Ms.Ruby's for the first time in 1996. It really "WOWED "me ! ! ! , and I became an instant Fan. I took her signature Red Velvet " to slot of parties , gatherings and events. I believe her "Red Velvet " is truly one of the better ones around. So your wondering why 3/ STARS ? Well , it's a good cake ... but not the " OMG" factor I look for in cakes & pastries when I do a review. The service was find and I even spoke to Ms.Ruby herself, who occasionally sits down in the store and greets her customers. I also had the "Sock It To Me", and the " Cream Cheese Cake " which I thought where good as well. Her cake is moist , good texture and just the right amount of cream cheese that doesn't overpower the taste to the point where all your tasting is cream -cheese without the balance of confectionery sugar. I really like Ms. Ruby's, but this time I have to give it a three because I was not completely satisfied with this supposedly chicken Philly cheese sandwich . First off I have never had any type of Philly cheesesteak sandwich with sliced American cheese on it, this is where they went wrong. This sandwich could've been so much better with shredded Swiss cheese on it, I won't bash the sandwich too much because personally I do not like American cheese but I still stand firm on a Philly cheesesteak sandwich having shredded melted Swiss cheese, it is everyone's prerogative on their personal views about this sandwich but for future reference I will stick with the turkey burger that I usually get. read more

Stopped to get fish for lunch and the place was closed so we walked down a couple doors and found Ms Ruby's! So glad we did!!! My daughter ordered their cat fish lunch and said it was cooked to perfection and enough for 2 meals!! I ordered the chicken strip lunch and was hoping for the best! I am telling you, the best chicken strips I have ever had! The chicken was so tender and the batter was so crispy!! I have no idea what the seasoning was on the fries, but I will be back to find out! Tried to support this business. I have to give them a failing grade. Poor customer service. Waited 7 minutes and rang the buzzer several times. Finally I left. But I thought I'd call to see what's going on. The man who answered was short on patience. He told me no one came to the counter because my "order was not ready". This is ridiculous. How could my order be ready if you never took my order? Why not just say I m so sorry we are short staffed... please try us tomorrow and ask for me... I'll be sure to take good care of you.
