This place is amazing! I was invited to meet some community partners for brunch. One of the best soul food restaurants in Los Angeles. A small bistro with a big menu, full of down home southern comfort. There are about 6 booths and a couple of tables in the front. In the back, there is a bar and several dining tables and chairs. The staff here are really nice and welcoming. I plan on trying a few more items in the future but on my first visit I ordered the fried catfish, yams and macaroni and cheese. All perfectly prepared and delicious. The Arnold Palmer was well balanced and the red velvet cake was absolutely tasty. Highly recommended

The purple drawings show most of the mold on the cobbler deserts served and sold at the M'Dears Restaurant.

The food was okay. The potatoes were dry. But worse of all the deserts that are displayed for purchase at the entrance of the restaurant were MOLDY!!! We purchased the apple and peach cobbler deserts and both were MOLDY on top and mold could be seen on the sides of the desert where the butter bubbles. See the pictures attached to this review. The health department should be called because this was NOT ACCEPTABLE!!! Very disappointed because this restaurant is in my neighborhood. The service, and now the quality of the food has gone downhill. Definitely not worth the price, gas or walk to go there. Proceed with caution!!!!

Frozen Salmon Croquettes and aged home fries.

Extremely slow service. Orders not prioritized, leftover home fries, and seafood items taste frozen-not fresh.

Update: We visited M'Dears just after New Year's. Our young adults said the pancakes were mediocre and tasted odd to them. I tried some of the pancakes, and I thought they tasted good. I ordered Reggie's Vegetables, which turned out to be quite bland. Most of the vegetables, like peppers, onions, and broccoli, were raw. The home-style potatoes were the highlight of the meal. The only thing that made it better was the eggs--both over easy and scrambled--that our children shared with me since they don't eat them. We suspected our waiter was new because we had to ask a couple of times before we finally received our warm water. This time, we paid the bill after the meal, which was different from our experience on Mother's Day in 2024. For our Mother's Day celebration at M'Dears in Los Angeles, the atmosphere was very neighborhood-friendly, and you could tell they support many local businesses. A good number of people came out to celebrate the occasion. The value and portion sizes were well-balanced. They served some delicious drinks, especially one called the New Orleans Hurricane. The French toast, chicken sausage, and hotcakes were all tasty. I also tried salmon croquettes and fried snapper, but both were dry and lacked rich flavor. Overall, we enjoyed the food and were fully satisfied, so we decided to return to M'Dears in the future. The menu is extensive, and there are plenty of sweet options, like banana pudding.

Food: 8/10 Service: 10/10 Ambiance: 9/10 If you're in Los Angeles and craving soulful comfort food with an upscale twist, M'Dears Bakery & Bistro is an absolute must! From the moment we walked in, the warm atmosphere and inviting vibe set the tone for an amazing dining experience. I ordered the smoked turkey tacos, greens, cornbread, yams, and catfish--and every single bite was pure perfection. The flavors were rich and authentic, and the seasoning was spot-on. The catfish was tender and flaky, the greens were succulent and practically melted on my taste buds, and the yams struck the perfect balance of sweet and savory with just the right texture. The cornbread? Soft, moist, and baked to golden perfection. Honestly, I had to stop myself multiple times from licking my fingers! Our server, Craig, was phenomenal--polite, attentive, and genuinely hospitable, which made the entire experience even better. If you're ever in the LA area and want a meal that feels like home but tastes like heaven, M'Dears Bakery & Bistro in Manchester Square should be at the top of your list. Amazing food, wonderful service, and reasonable prices--this spot checks all the boxes!

A time was had! I recently held my father's 80th birthday party at M'Dears. The staff was very professional, polite and helpful. Food was delicious. I recommend considering them for your parties.

So went on a Saturday morning it was busy, wrote our name on the list and was called and seated in about 10 mins not bad at all. I ordered the Reggie's Veggies with egg and asked would it be scrambled with everything. I was told that it would. When my food arrived it was scrambled egg on top and looked like everything else was cooked separate as well. It had no favor at all. I asked the waitress to remove it from the bill and was told that she had done us a favor because they normally charge before your food arrives. That's new to me!!

The drinks and pastries have always made it an easy place for us to grab a treat, so I'm not writing this based on one random first impression. Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing enough that I felt I needed to say something. When we came in, the trash cans were overflowing, and the floor looked like it had not been cleaned in quite some time. I understand that cafés can get very busy, especially in Little Tokyo, and I never expect a place to look perfect every second of the day. However, the dining area felt noticeably neglected. With two children, cleanliness is something I pay closer attention to, and it was uncomfortable trying to find a clean area for us to stand and sit. The overall atmosphere also felt disorganized. We waited at the register for help, but it took a while before anyone acknowledged us. A simple "I'll be right with you" would have made a big difference. I have had better experiences here in the past, which is why this visit stood out so much. I'm hoping this was simply a bad day, because Café Dulce has always been a place I was happy to visit with my family. I'm sharing this because I would genuinely like to see the cleanliness and customer service return to the standard I remember. Private Feedback for Management I did not feel comfortable putting the full details of this experience in a public review, but I believe management needs to be aware of what happened. While I was standing at the register waiting to order, the male employee working there was engaged in a conversation with another person and appeared to be openly gloating about drinking while on the job. Based on what I heard and observed, he also appeared to be impaired or intoxicated. He continued the conversation while ignoring me, even though I was standing directly in front of the register waiting to place an order. The tone of the conversation was not subtle or professional. It created a much darker and more uncomfortable atmosphere than what I would ever expect from a family-friendly café. I was there with my two children, and hearing someone behind the register casually talking about drinking while working was deeply concerning. Someone who appears intoxicated while operating a register and handling customers' money creates a terrible narrative for the business. It raises concerns about judgment, accuracy with transactions, food-service safety, and the overall professionalism of the workplace. Even if the employee was exaggerating or joking, it was still completely inappropriate to have that conversation openly in front of customers. What bothered me most was not only the conversation, but the fact that I was being ignored while it continued. I was waiting to spend money at the business, yet the employee seemed more interested in talking about drinking than acknowledging a customer. As a mother standing there with two children, the situation felt uncomfortable, disrespectful, and honestly a little disturbing. This is not my first time visiting Café Dulce, and I have never felt compelled to complain before. I understand that employees are human and that businesses have difficult days. However, the combination of overflowing trash cans, a dirty floor, being ignored at the register, and an employee appearing impaired while discussing drinking on the job crossed a line for me. I am sharing this privately because I believe management should have the opportunity to address it directly. I hope the situation is taken seriously, not only for the reputation of the café, but for the safety and comfort of the customers and employees.

Here's a helpful tip: The bank next door allows 10 minutes of parking if you use their ATM and keep your receipt. There is security in the lot, so be sure to have your receipt as proof of the time. It's more than enough time to run next door and grab your treats. I ordered a slice of the lemon loaf, a gluten-free cookie, and the classic chocolate chip cookie. The lemon loaf slice is huge, I'd say it's the equivalent of two slices, so it's definitely big enough to share. As for the cookies, Levain is known for making them thick and rich. A small piece goes a long way, making them perfect for savoring over a couple of days (if you have that much self-control!). The moment you walk inside, you're greeted by the incredible aroma of freshly baked pastries, and the service was warm and welcoming. I truly think everyone should experience a Levain cookie or pastry at least once. It's worth the visit!
