With this service center, that doesn't happen. Person on the phone will ridicule you for not knowing what needs to be done with your car. This service center needs some customer service training. I learned about this place and met with owner Jeff from a friend of mine whom he said can be trusted. I had good experience with him for a bit. My daughter got old car and he said the power steering does not work and he said to pass the inspection it needs to be fixed and he came out with $1500, 750 for labor, did not mention how many hours the labor for the job. Before we started he was yelling at me why I let my daughter bought the car. When we got it back, he said all is fixed, power steering is good. We put the car in the garage, not driving it much, 125 miles later, the powersteering fluid leaked and poured everywhere. power steering stopped working. My daughter paid so much money and trusting him to do the job because so far he seemed to be honest and kind. My daughter called him and asked him to fix the problem, it is ridiculous as a mechanic and quoted work to be done, 125 miles later it broke. He asked her to bring the car and then he called me and left messages with condencending and pushing attitude that I should return his call and come up with more money, $398 plus tax. I let my daughter talked to him. She finally came to the store and brought a mechanic friend of hers to look at the car, she asked him if she could see the car, he said okay, then they started questioning about the price of the parts and why its so overpriced, he said, " would you bring steak to the restaurant and ask the chef to cook it?" with an attitude. He gave the key to my daughter and said "you're all set." and left, basically kicking them out. My daughter is 19 and work all summer long to buy an older car, paid $1500 and he did not even stand to his quality of work and wanted to rip us off more. He is nice at first to get your trust, but once you know he is a bad mechanic, dishonest, and greedy, he will be so extremely rude to you. Run far away from Jeff. If you read the review on google. This place tried to charge me $467 for a 1.5 hr job where I provided the alternator. When I constantly asked her name... the woman was reluctant to give me her name because I told her I will be reviewing this location for this BS. She told me her name was Jo...after I refused to back down. "Jo" told me that she didn't care if I had my own part, Even if I bring her the alternator, she is going to charge me for the cost of the part + labor. Even though she would not be providing me with the alternator (because I paid $250 to buy the part from Advanced Auto Parts) ....she wanted to charge me for it anyway. When I asked her to explain why she was trying to charge me for a second alternator instead of just charging me the labor costs of installation.. she said and I quote " Well, I need to make a living! So if you bring me the part... I'm going to need to charge you for the part AND the labor. If you give me the part, I will charge $467 for the parts and labor. If I use my own parts I will still charge you $467 for parts and labor. That's just how I make a living." THIS IS ABSURD. There is no reason I should be charged the same price when I provide the part vs when I do not. If I am providing the part... why the hell are you trying to charge me for the part that I am giving you?! I will never go back to this place and I hope what happened to me lets others know to double check whatever BS quote that lady gives out. Check around because this place sucks at customer service and tends to hike up the prices. read more

We love Mt. Hope service station. We have a car that has consistently been giving us problems. So far, we have taken it to 3 different service stations. Everyone has said they fixed it, but after a month, it will start having problems again. But Jeff not only fixed it, but checks up on us to make sure that it is still running smoothly. I should have read the Yelp reviews before I sent my daughter to Jeff, especially if you read the consistent price gauging theme on other reviews. I appreciate that every business needs to be financially viable. What I don't appreciate is when someone tries to take advantage of my daughter when needing a simple ABS diagnostics and wheel bearing replacement during a pandemic. I was quoted nearly $400 for a wheel bearing part (+ $200 in labour) where I can buy the exact part from Moog directly for $205 and from Rock Auto for $100... these are consumer retail prices not dealer/shop prices which are wholesaled even cheaper for garages. I thought when we talked he understood that I am a car guy (changed one hub myself) and because of Covid travel restrictions my daughter couldn't come home to repair the car. Shops make money from parts and labour... I understand. With my experience I was expecting a repair coat of $300 or so all in - not $700. I base this on the previous SKF part I paid $160 Cdn$ to which Jeff said he doesn't use "Chinese" parts (SKF is a premium bearing company based in Sweden that manufacturers these parts in Canada and the USA and better than the part he was suggesting). When asked if he would install a new part I would provide, his simple answer would you go to a steak house and ask them to cook the steak you provided - we have corking service in Canada where you pay for opening a bottle of wine you bring one from home. I was dumbfounded by this BS like his shop has the USDA Prime cuts of auto parts or Michelin trained chefs/mechanics. This is an American made car not some bespoke Ferrari. This is why my daughter didn't want to deal with any shop directly - so she wouldn't be taken advantage of. Again every business has a right to make money and I have a right not to use their services and also to share my experiences with others. So here's a dad with nearly 40 years of car repairs (brake repair, electrical, engine rebuilds, body work, rear end work etc.) listening to the justification of price gauging and wonder what the price would be if my kid walked in there alone. I had hoped that I had found a shop that could perform other maintenance in the future... you only get one chance to make a bad first impression - mission accomplished! read more

SO RUDE! I have my car towed to his place to fix the flat tire. The person who towed our car left the key inside the car so we couldn't open the door. The guy didn't check our car until afternoon and yelled at me in the phone saying "we couldn't do shit without the key" and yelled at my friend saying "do you go to college here? Do you have a brain?" The most absolute rude person I've ever seen in my life. Besides, the minute I walked into the door, he asked me have I been to China before? I have been taking my cars to Jeff for inspections and other work for the last three years since I started as a student at the University of Rochester. His location is very convenient (very easy walking distance from the UR community), and he is very careful and thoughtful in his work. I appreciate his willingness to discuss and help me understand the problems that arise, and he makes an effort to consider unlikely solutions. On my most recent car inspection it appeared that there was a problem with my wheel bearing. When I went to pick up the car, Jeff had been thinking more about the problem, and decided to try a few additional checks for some very unlikely causes of the play in the wheel. Turns out, this fixed the problem, and he saved me $900! read more

Ok,I live in 5 hours away. My daughter is a student at U of R. Her car battery died in the dead of winter and at 6am she called home and I told her she needed to call AAA road service to replace her battery. They came a hour later and didn't have a battery to replace the old one After a jump while the car was running she drove to auto zone and the guy puts in the battery for her. Not a good idea. The guy from auto zone put the old battery on top of the accelerator wire and broke a part. I called Jeff at 7:30 am and told me to tell her to go straight over and he would help her. My daughter could barely drive with the accelerator not working properly. But she got the car to Jeff and he found out the problem right away and fixed it for $10.00 I should have just gone to Mt Hope for the battery. I was glad to know they have a place to service the car when in need and before they make the 5 drive home they will take it to MT Hope for service. read more

I brought my car to Mt. Hope to get my leaky radiator replaced. Not only did Jeff do a fantastic job, but he saved me as much money as he could by salvaging still-working parts where he could rather than replacing them with new ones. He also stayed long after hours to have my car ready by the day he promised it would be done. I also brought him my quote for 'recommended repairs' from a local tire chain that totaled to over $1000. He gave me a second opinion and was able to tell me where I would have been ripped off by having unnecessary repairs done by the chain. Hi, I just wanted to rant about my recent experience at Mt Hope Service center : The axle broke on my car as I was driving it & they were the closest service station . They said they were able to fix it within a few days, so kudos for that. They were very nice and polite, too. However, they tried to tell me I also needed $1200 worth of brake work ~ told me they needed replacement all around, that 1 front and 1 back were frozen, and that a caliper was cracked ... I had had to euthanize my dog that week and already had spent most of my money on unexpected vet bills, so I told them that could wait, just do the axle. When I received the bill, besides the parts charge & the labor cost, there was a $50 Shop Fee. I have NEVER heard of this & questioned it & was told it's their cost of doing business. If I hadn't been so distraught about my dog, I would have argued it. As it is, I have asked 3 other service centers and NONE of them have EVER heard of this fee. So, I definitely feel that I was ripped off by this fee. AND I had my car checked TWICE after that, within a few weeks ~ once to have new tires installed and then to get an inspection ~ and BOTH mechanics told me that my brakes were fine ! I will NEVER go back here and would like to warn my neighbors against doing business with them ~ if you do, please examine your bill for hidden fees ! read more

SO rude. I had my car towed here when my brakes stopped working. I don't know a ton about cars so I always ask questions when I need repairs done. He immediately raised his voice with me, became quite condescending and hastily rushed through his "answer." Due to how rude he was I looked up his other yelp reviews and saw that this, along with his high prices, are a common theme. BEWARE POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS! Here's my encounter with this shop and it was NOT a good one. One-sentence summary: they will try to overcharge you & make you pay for a job that is unnecessary, so stay away . Full story: I just registered my car under NYS so I had to get it inspected. Since I live near Strong, this shop was in a very convenient location- I could have just dropped off my car and walk back home. I brought it in for a state inspection (I had to make an appointment more than a week in advance..) in the morning, and got a call that afternoon. Jeff (the owner) told me that I had to change my rear brake calipers, change one of my ball joints, and fix the O2 sensor. I knew about the O2 sensor before (check engine light was on for a while), and that the total will come to about $1700. I bought this as a used car, but my father made sure that everything was okay before I drove it up here, so I went into the shop to pick my car up and talk to him in person. Jeff came across as a pretty nice guy at first, but now that I think of it, he didn't actually show me the bad parts/ explained it very well. I wasn't about to spend 1700, so I had my father call him and see if those were legitimate reasons; after talking to Jeff, my father got back to me and he said Jeff was very rude and abrasive, and that he didn't really trust him. So we called different auto shops (Schrader's and DnB on Mt.Hope)- they were both quite skeptical about the fact that my brake calipers had to be replaced (given the relatively new condition of my car) and also said the total quote was quite high - Schrader actually offered to finish the same job for about $1100 including tax. I actually ended up taking my car to DnB on Mt.Hope, and it turned out that my calipers were totally fine. I did have to change one of the ball joints and my O2 sensor, however. Bruce at DnB was very honest and he explained everything while showing me all the parts. So.. moral of the story, Jeff is a con man and he will try to overcharge & make totally unnecessary diagnosis. Judging by the good review online, maybe he only does this to a certain population, like young females (I walked in by myself). In fact, my friend (who is also a young female) also brought her car here for an inspection and given a $500 quote. She ended up taking her car to the dealership and they said her car is fine. If I were you, I would stay away from this shop. Or, at least get a second quote from somewhere else. But then you're just doubling your work, so I would recommend you to go to either DnB or Schrader's from the beginning. I know this shop is at a very convenient location especially for college students/ grad students, but it's not worth it, just don't do it. read more

I brought my car to the Mt Hope Service Center when I had a blinking check engine light and my car would not ride properly (it shook whenever I stepped on the gas and had a burned gas smell). I let Jeff know that I live in the community literally 2 blocks away from this service center and I'd really appreciate to find a good car mechanic that I could trust in the area such that I could return for future issues. Jeff ran the diagnostics and correctly diagnosed that the problem was with my ignition control module - and told me that I would need an ignition control module, 3 ignition coils, and a new oxygen sensor. The cost that he came up with for such a fix was $1200. As my car was 10 years old and probably only worth $3000 I was on the fence about whether to do the repair or trade it in for a new/used car. That's when I asked friends, family and coworkers and soon researched on the internet and found the same parts that he said I needed online for a total of $300. I purchased the parts online and had a friend who is experienced with car repairs perform the work. The work literally took 1 hour (and was as easy as unscrewing old parts and screwing in new parts). I paid my friend for the work - but saved close to $700-800 on the repair and my car works great. So long story short... correct diagnosis but highway robbery. I will never return. He lost a customer and potentially other customers as I work and live in the area and could have recommended several people. read more

This place is great. Pulled in on a whim at 5:15 on the Friday before Memorial Day because I was worried about the sloshing sound coming from below my passenger floor. Also he treated me like crap because my car had problems (why else would I call a mechanic?). I have been taking my car, and my wife's car to Jeff at Mt. Hope Service Center for years. The one thing that stands out to me is that Jeff seems very aware that I am driving my family around in my car, as in, he seems to care about the safety of of my wife and kids; and that means a lot to me. I had taken all of our cars to other quick oil change places in the past, but almost every time something got missed or I felt like they were changing me $15 to change my oil so they could get me for expensive other work. I have never felt that way at Mt. Hope. I can't recommend Mt Hope Service enough. read more

Had my girlfriend's car towed to Mt. Hope Service Center after it started making a strange noise. Before the tow-truck arrived I called to make sure it would be looked at that day as we had to figure out some travel plans and wanted to know how serious the problem was. Jeff assured me that within an hour it would be looked at and he would have a status report. After more than an hour at the shop (I was worried but know that sometimes trouble shooting takes longer than expected), Jeff got back to me that same day saying the noise was just a piece of metal bent in the wrong place. He also alerted me to some potential future problems with the car but did not push me to have him fix the car then. He was understanding of our situation on the phone and in person he even reviewed the problems with us, showing us the points where some other fixes could be made. For $50, Jeff's fixes and assessments were very welcome to have a car that worked again. read more

Read and heed the negative reviews on this site. I patronized this shop for years - my wife and I had our cars serviced here, bought tires here and really thought we had in Jeff (the owner) the trustworthy and reliable mechanic we so coveted, as others on this site have commented was their hope. I know a fair amount about cars and mechanics and know when something doesn't pass the smell test. Over time I believe the trust we held was taken for granted and things began to not "smell" so good. This culminated when I got an outrageous estimate for repairs I did not authorize only to find my car already apart and the work begun. I had to have it towed out of there as it was not driveable in the condition it was in. I took it to another mechanic who checked it over thoroughly and found a rather simple electrical repair (bad ground in a tailgate circuit) was all I needed. All the other repairs Mt Hope suggested were completely bogus. I felt completely taken advantage of by someone I had trusted. In my opinion, a betrayal of earned trust in this situation is beyond forgiveness. read more
