I was told by my extended warranty that I needed to bring my car to a list of 5 different places and this place had the best reviews and an appointment the next week. Well after bringing my car here my warranty company now saying that I needed to bring it to a different dealer repair shop. So I have been without A/C for two weeks and wasted my time and this facilities time. Car still isn't fixed but waiting on my appointment with dealer. They were very accommodating and didn't charge me for a work up on my car. They definitely could have charged me but didn't. I really appreciate that. Would recommend them. Truly what a family run business is, honest. Hired them to inspect a vehicle most in this area would not even touch due to its age and complexity. Took my car there for exhaust work. They changed some gaskets. Got car back and exhaust was still loud. They said noise was coming from a puncture along exhaust. Couldn't explain why they changed gaskets instead of repairing hole--the source of problem. Got my money back after disputing charge with credit card company. read more

My first and ONLY experience with Clar's Elmwood Automotive was the worst that I have ever had with an auto mechanic. I brought my 2015 Ford Mustang in to Clar's Automotive, as a referral from Carmax, to fix my driver-side door that lost it's electrical functionality. After 3 weeks in the shop of continually telling me they couldn't get the proper wiring harness, Wade suggested that they could cut the harness they did have to make it fix the window, mirror and door locks issues. I told them not to and that if they couldn't get the proper part I would take it somewhere else. Miraculously, the very next day they told me that the work was completed and I could pick up the finished car. When I picked up the car, the electronics in the driver-side door was working, BUT there were dozens of electronic faults throughout the entire car. I brought this to Wade's attention and he told me that he had fixed the original problem and that he wasn't going to address any of the other electrical problems. The very next day I took my car to Henderson Ford in Webster and they found out that Wade had used a non-compliant wiring harness and cut and spliced different wires that caused the multiple electronic faults. It cost me over $4000 to fix his original screw-up. I sent a demand for compensation letter that he refused to accept. I had to take him to small claims court and won a judgment against him and after a year of ignoring subpoena's for payment I ended up submitting a complaint through the State Department of Motor Vehicle. After the DMV threatened to revoke his operating license did he decide to pay what was owed to me. If this is the type of shady ethics and mechanical work you want in your auto mechanic, you may want to take your business elsewhere. THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU CONSIDER DOING ANY BUSINESS WITH CLAR'S ELMWOOD AUTOMOTIVE!!! read more

I decided to give two stars to this place considering my first experience here was ok. However this time my experience was horrible, and I don't think I'll ever come back again. My ABS systems light kept turning on and off for a few days so I decided to take it in for an inspection. When I called for the appointment the receptionist told me to drop my car off early in the morning, because the inspection would take an hour, and depending on what's wrong with my car, it's better to come in early so they would have still enough time to fix it that day after the inspection. I dropped it off at around 9 am, and the receptionist told me she'd call me before noon. I called at 11:32 to check on my car, and the receptionist said it's not ready yet, and she'll call when she had the information, which according to her, would be soon. I got a call from her at 12:55 pm, confirming which service I had requested, because my ABS lights were off at the moment. Even though I had already told her about this when I booked the appointment, and at the time whoever I spoke to told me to still take the car in for an inspection, I explained again and said I would still like to get the car inspected. She went to confirm with someone and told me that they would work on my car right away. Well, all afternoon and nothing, so I called again at 5:29 pm to ask what's going on. A guy answered this time and said he doesn't know what's going on with my car (???), then I heard him ask another guy where my car was, that person said "I don't know where the car is, I didn't work on it". Then I was told that they don't know what's going on with my car, and the owner left for a test drive but would give me a call back in ten minutes. At 5:48 pm I finally received my call back but I was told they were running behind so they couldn't check my car that day. And she asked me if I wanted to go pick it up. I told her I had an appointment at 9 am just so they could have enough time to inspect and possibly fix my car the same day. And the receptionist apologized. On my way to the shop I got another call from her and she told me they couldn't work on my car because my ABS systems lights were off, and they can only check it while the lights are on. This just seemed ridiculous to me now. I had told them, twice, that the lights were off, and they had told me both times they would still examine my car. They could also have told me to pick up my car when they knew they couldn't examine it, instead of letting me know only when I called. And am I supposed to bring the car in right away when the lights turn on, without an appointment? Well, it turned out, they wouldn't check it even when I had an appointment. I gave one star for today's experience because it had caused me a lot of inconvenience, and I think how the staff managed appointments, and communicated between each other and customers was very unprofessional. I bought 4 tires and was promised by the owner warranty on the tires if I paid cash. Then I recently got my car inspected and 3 of my tires was found to have a leak. I of course went back to store and ask for repair because I was insured warranty coverage. However after fixing my tire they demanded payment for the repair. When I stated that I was given warranty on the tires they said it did not exist and forced me to pay. The owner scammed me into thinking I was getting a good deal while forcing me to pay more out of pocket cause of their lies. I would avoid this store. People who cannot do their job honestly and at their bear minimum keep their own word does not deserve the business read more

I am from NYC and I came up to Rochester for my sister's graduation. Upon preparing to leave the next day, my left drivers side tire blew out on me. I couldn't find any shop that was open late on a Friday night but just when I was about to give up, I decided to stop by Clar's automotive (even though they were closed). I explained to the owner my situation how I needed to head back to NYC at 4am and he did not hesitate one bit to help. He gave me the best service and was so gracious even with the cost of the repair. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a great service at a decent price. read more

Great experience at this shop. I work across the street and brought my car over during lunch because I found out I had a nail in my tire. I was going to get it plugged but decided to see how much it would cost for them to just replace my back two tires as the tread was running low anyway. They gave me a great price on the tires, mounting, rotating, etc so I decided to go for it. They were able to order my tires get them and put them on all between the hours of 12-3 o:clock. Very nice, fair, and a pleasure to do business with. read more

They were the first auto repair I came to when my car suddenly overheated. It was the end of the day and they looked really busy but the owner was very helpful and was clearly going out of his way to help. Gradually I started using them for oil changes, inspections, tires and repairs. In my experience I'd say respect for the customer starts at the top and is practiced all the way down.
