DISHONEST! DO NOT BRING YOUR CAR HERE! GOUGING AND UNDISCLOSED FEES. THEY TRY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF PEOPLE. I brought my 2005 Subaru here trying to get a few things fixed and get an inspection. I dropped it off and get a call 2 hours later from Sam. He tells me it is "decision time" and that the minimum I'm going to spend is $2,500 to $3,500 to get everything fixed and without these repairs it won't pass inspection. I advise him that I need to think on it but decide against it, when I go to pick up the car he out of the blue says that the "diagnosis" would be a $40 fee. He never disclosed this when I asked him for a quote or when we were on the phone discussing the fix, nor does it mention $40 fee for a diagnosis on his website. I ended up bringing my Subaru to my hometown mechanic and he fixed everything for under $700 and it passed inspection. Needless to say, I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT SAM TRIED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ME and will be telling everyone I know to AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE. read more

My son attends RIT, we're from Massachusetts. He calls to inform me that our 2006 Toyota Sienna will not start. Given I perform lots of my own maintenance and I placed a fresh battery in it recently, I assumed it was the starter. I call Sam and he says to tow it over in the morning. Sam inspects and confirms it is the starter. The car was repaired that morning, at a reasonable cost. I have to go along with others, Sam is honest and reliable. When you move to a new city, you have to start again. You gotta find new favorite bars, restaurants, cafes, doctors, plumbers, etc. Usually you've got to go through a few bad experiences before you get it right. Yelp has been excellent for this, but it's still a bit hit and miss, especially for services like mechanics. Such a delight, then, to have so thoroughly nailed it on the first attempt. We went to Sam on the basis of the reviews here, and they were spot on. This wasn't a hugely complex job - Sam and I both had a pretty good idea of what was wrong with the car before they looked at it - but I can think of plenty of other mechanics who would've have found ways to milk it for all it was worth. Sam was totally upfront, told us exactly how much it was going to cost (ie, much less than I expected) before they did the work, and got it done pronto. Called us several times to make sure we knew what was happening. And all while being friendly and approachable, happy to talk and explain everything. When we mentioned how hot our house was, they even hooked us up with an AC guy who apparently shares their values of honest, reliable service and customer relationships. My wife's quote? Prompt, thorough, no up-selling and reasonable prices - don't think one could ask for much more in these times. Sam will call a spade a spade whether you like it or not. Sugar-coating is not his thing nor is haggling - his rates are reasonable to begin with. He gives you his expert opinion which is always based on your budget and then let's YOU decide whether or not you want to buy/install parts from him. My two experiences with this garage have been superb. Unlike the many chains and franchise auto repair facilities around Rochester, this garage has not made a business of charging car owners extra for unneeded and unrequested work. Today, I asked for diagnosis of a clunking on the rear driver's side when I hit a bump. I thought it was a bad strut or a loose exhaust part. Sam drove the car, put it on the lift and saw a leaking shock absorber. What he did next was amazing and really appreciated. He phoned a local Hyundai dealer from whom he orders parts and confirmed shocks are covered on my car for 10 years or 60,000 miles. My car has 50,000 miles and is five years old, so Sam advised me to get the repair for free at the Hyundai dealer. When I offered to pay him for the time and diagnosis, he would not accept payment. It's a pleasure doing business with such an honest mechanic and nice guy. read more

Basically because of the responsiveness, patience and kindness they showed me. Like other reviewers here, I was new to Rochester. I looked on Yelp and was impressed with the reviews. I only needed a minor repair (a brake light). Called in the morning. A woman (perhaps Sam's wife, I'm not sure) asked me about my car problems, then asked if I could get in the same day. I had some weird engine sounds, so I took my car in for an inspection. They believed that it had to do with oil and the engine, and changed my oil (which I needed to have done anyway) to see if that would fix it. It didn't immediately change anything, so Sam told me if it got worse, it probably wouldn't be worth fixing, as my car is incredibly old and has 200,000+ miles on it. The honesty was much appreciated. I had to drive to Niagara falls the next week however, and asked him if he thought I could make it. He told me to stop by later in the week and he would see if he thought it was ok enough to make the trip. I did so, and he later gave me the go-ahead, at no extra cost. Was very impressed with my experience here. I came in with a number of concerns about the performance of my 09 Honda Fit and Sam looked into each one. When I lived in Rochester, I went to Lo Vetro's for all my auto repairs. They explained problems well and always struck me as honest. When I first brought it in my tire needed patched and they didn't even charge me, they just said to bring it back if I had any other problems. I was glad that I did. I had several major issues with the car during this period due to some terrible work done by Steubenville Pike Auto after a minor accident in another state. It was pretty traumatic but I felt like Sam gave me the options, explained what they were and wasn't trying to push me to make any particular decision. I decided to get the car fixed rather than replace it but he did advise me that might be the cheaper route, in which case they wouldn't have made anything. I had gotten an estimate for $1200+ of repairs from another mechanic, after spending $80 for the diagnostic and an inspection I knew I'd fail because my check engine light was on. I looked on yelp and called Lo Vetro for another estimate, and based on what I told him on the phone, Sam told me he thought they were trying to make me pay for things my car didn't need. (The other place told me two similar parts needed to be replaced, and Sam said that was extremely unlikely.) So I made an appointment, based on the much lower estimate, his forthrightness, and the glowing yelp reviews. Sam came up with some pretty convincing evidence the other place was scamming me--they said they did an inspection, but when he plugged the machine in, there was no record of the inspection having been done. There were a number of other shady practices he alerted me to, as well. There was no need for Sam to do this--he already had my business--but he made it very clear that he does business cleanly and hates hearing about places that don't. He saved me a bunch of money, my car is running great, and he gave me a break on the inspection cost. With all of this, he gained a loyal customer for the rest of the time I'm in Rochester, and I've already told several friends to take their business there. A smart businessman who's honest and friendly...and who does great work? Yes please. (The other guys working there were very friendly, too. So I have to start by saying that I never actually got any work done by this group but I had to post something to validate all these reviews about how honest this group is. I had a problem with my car that my Chevy dealership said would cost me $100 to fix. I thought this price was pretty high, as per usual. So I found Sam Lo Vetro Automotive on Yelp and saw all these reviews about the honest work they do. I called and I believe I was speaking with Sam, I can't be sure, but whoever I was speaking with told me they could do it for $90 but there was a hitch. They said they've fixed three Chevy Cruzes with the same problem that I have (I have a Chevy Cruze), and every time they've done it, another part broke and ended up costing $250. I told whoever I was speaking with that the dealership offered to do it for $100 he actually told me to go there for a number of reasons. He offered to fix it for me but said that the rate the dealership was giving was pretty reasonable and it would be best for me to go there for the work because they would have a better chance of keeping the price at $100. He was actually looking out for what was in my best interest - the cheapest possible scenario. It is safe to say that I was surprised, in the best possible way, that he turned down my business because I was getting a better deal with a competitor. I have to think that most mechanics would have jumped at the opportunity to do this work and end up making $250 instead of $100 because another part broke. I had no idea this was something that was happening and was bound to get taken advantage of had I not talked to this group. In the automotive line of work, at least in my experience, it is seems to be very difficult to find a trustworthy and honest person. I've never posted a review on Yelp before today because just a 5 minutes conversation with this person convinced me of his integrity. Maybe I'm going over a little overboard about a phone call but it was really refreshing to talk to someone who didn't seem to be ripping me off when it came to my car. read more

This is definitely the place to go in Rochester. I was visiting the city two weeks ago on vacation when my car broke down. After the car was towed to his shop, Sam gave me a detailed estimate of the problems and what it would take to fix the car (time and money). The evaluation included a trip to another shop to have the frame adjusted. Sam provided detailed information about the problems and realistic estimates of the amount of time it would take to complete the repairs. Sam knew I was visiting the city and planning to leave as soon as the car was fixed. The work was completed the day after the car went into the shop. I was picked up in the car and rode to the shop to pay the bill. I was astonished at the price...much lower than it would have been at home. I was really excited to find Lo Vetro Automotive about 6 months ago. I have a fairly new car with only about 10k miles, so ideally I never expected to have tons of maintenance this soon. I've been to Sam for an oil change and after a flat tire situation. The oil change was pricey, but Sam issued fair warning about this because it was full synthetic, but also offered honest advice about the next time I have to come in for a change, instead of insisting it needs to be changed more often than necessary. Also, this was all done in the dead of winter early in the morning after 7 in. of snow overnight! A couple months later, I got a flat during a long drive and had to drive a ways on a donut. They checked my wheel to make sure it wasn't damaged, and were able to get in the matching tired I needed surprisingly quickly (my sidewall was damaged, unfortunately). Sam did a great job explaining what was going on to my somewhat uninformed self with honesty and the right price. I'm glad this place is so close to me! read more

Great job again! Had brake issues with our Grand Caravan... I thought I would have to replace the caliper that didn't work plus a caliper for the other side along with pads and rotors. They were able to repair the slide pins on the caliper and just replace the pads and rotors. Cost about half of what I thought it would be. Bruce from the AutoStop was filling in for Sam who was on vacation. I told Bruce we were taking a long trip with the van and he made sure everything was given a once-over look to make sure it was good to go. Job was done quickly as well...
