Been coming here for years and it just seems like the service is just getting worse. Waited at the counter for 15 minutes before I had to say something to get them acknowledge me. Absolute terrible customer service. Will not be coming here again. It is my opinion that they strongly deserve a one star at this time. Management and employees need to understand that we tourist I responsible for allowing them to make a living at the restaurant business. I highly recommend to stay away from here. This is a belated review for Friday night dinner. This is our usual place to eat in Lone Pines. We arrived in the evening and yelp say it was open for another hour. As we entered the restaurant, there were many customers inside dining. However, we were told that it was closed. I didn't see any business hour on the door. Minus 1 star. The staff who talked to us was kind enough to provide 2 clam chowders togo. He also included plastic spoons and napkins. After driving several hours and being very hungry. We are extremely grateful because it was such a nice thing to do. We ended up eating the clam chowder in our car. I liked my foam cup until it was clean.. The chowder was very flavorful and has meaty chopped clams. So delicious. read more

I am a huge yelper, but sometimes you got to give places a shot even if their reviews aren't on point!! Hubby and I sat outside of this restaurant eating our dessert first while yelping our dinner spot! Hubby said what about this place and I was like...oh?! Yelped them and saw 3 stars, but after looking at pictures and their menu...we gave them a chance and LET ME TELL YOU ALL!!! THIS PLACE IS ON POINT!!! Seriously! Clam chowder soup was a meal of its own! Clam in each and every thick soupy bite! Then we were told it was homemade!!! What?! Service was great by the way...yes you have to wait a little while they prepare your hot meal!! So what! Enjoy your soup, sip on your drink, take your time and look around at all the amazing history on these walls! That's why your in Lone Pine right! Everyone is always in a rush! I had an early dinner at Mt. Whitney Restaurant in Lone Pine, CA on November 4th, 2020. Since the county is now permitting indoor seating, I thought I'd give them a try with social distancing well observed. Though the service was prompt and courteous, the meat loaf I received was as described by the waitperson: a lot of vegetables. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT ORDER THE MEATLOAF as I would have to describe it mushy slop smothered with gravy. The green beans were straight out of a can and over cooked. The only good part was the baked potato. I don't know why I didn't send it back because I'm usually the first one to return an unsatisfactory meal or anything for that matter. Anyways, I didn't return it and managed to eat about half of the huge portion -- are they trying to get rid of it? I can't speak for any of their other meals, but if they're meatloaf is any indication of corner-cutting, I might expect the same throughout their menu. read more

We were traveling and chose this restaurant because the online menu showed a good selection at reasonable prices. When we got to the restaurant, the prices averaged $15 per entree above the online menu prices. We asked the server about it and she said they knew that but it cost too much to change it. Our other restaurant choice had closed so we stayed and got the prime rib special. Half of the prime rib was fat, the baked potato was undercooked and the salad was gritty. Mt Whitney Restaurant is known for their burgers ... but I have not tried them. I've only had their salads and their breakfast items. The salad they made was good. Grilled Chicken Salad. You also have the option to get crispy chicken, turkey, and a few other types of meat. It comes with egg, shredded cheddar cheese, and tons of dressings you can choose from. The portion is pretty big. And the vegetables were fresh. The breakfast here is pretty cheap. I got their sausage and eggs. These come with your choice of bread as well as hash brown. The hash browns were cooked perfectly. It wasn't too oily. It wasn't too soggy. Just the right amount of crispiness. I like this place. My only complaint is the slow service... And the cleanliness. We wandered up and down the three blocks of downtown Lone Pine, and like the three bears came up with: One was too busy with a line waiting to get in, one was too brightly lit, but this one was just right. Tables available, nice menu, beer and wine selection, and kitschy decor (walls covered in photos of westerns filmed in Alabama Hills). Food was solid American, with great mashed potatoes, a perfectly grilled grilled cheese sandwich, with cheese perfectly melted. There were numerous burgers, and plenty of salads, appetizers, and entrees to choose from. Service was solid, and the cherry pie ala mode, served hot and flaky, was inspired. On the recommendation of my friend, We had breakfast before heading up to Mt. Whitney and dinner (the next day) for their "best burgers" after we completed the hike. I got the biscuits & gravy for hike carbs and they are very thick biscuits; I ordered 3, but could only finish 2. For dinner I got the maverick burger w pastrami and it was only so-so. Slightly over-cooked and not the mouth-watering variety I had longed for. Overall, the staff was pleasant, but the bus boy seemed to be the most attentive to our needs. read more

I stopped here with my boyfriend's family on our way back from Yuma and on our way to Seattle. We stayed at a local hotel in this small town and I really enjoyed the small town vibes, the service was fairly good, our server was attentive to say the least, and the food was edible. Not the most inspiring environment but good enough. However I cannot stress enough... please do not use the bathroom. There was throw up all up and down the walls and floor almost like no one has ever even thought to clean the bathroom. I did notice when I went to bathroom that it was quite filthy but I wasn't being overly conscious about it until my boyfriend went in after me and he came out terribly disgusted Overall, the food is fine and if you're stopping in the town, it's a cute small town joint to visit.. I saw a few bad reviews for this place and I have no idea why. The food was absolutely incredible. I had jalapeño poppers,a blue cheese burger with fries, a dinner salad and a homemade piece of blueberry pie. All of it was amazing. The staff was friendly and filled our glasses and got us anything we needed quickly and basically every table in the restaurant was filled. For 4 people eating like kings and a tip we were under a 100$. Not to mention all the amazing things to look at on the walls. Super amazing place. read more

Tons and tons of their rustic wooden walls filled with mostly old B&W Western photos, many of them signed, dating back quite a few years (the restaurant has been here since the 1920s)! It's a burger, BBQ, and sandwich place. They claim to have the best burgers in town, and, well, the burgers were good. Most of the food seem fine, nothing mind-blowing, and certainly not awful. The #3 Boulder Creek Burger, which is a burger drowned in chili, was good and hit the spot. The pozole soup was delicious, bursting with flavor but not spicy hot, with chunks of pork, hominy, chilis, cilantro, and onion. The service was friendly and relaxed, especially after I began asking about the history of the restaurant, as the waitress was noticeably excited about talking about Lone Pine and the restaurant's history. I would not come here if I were in a hurry, as things seem to happen at a leisurely, casual pace here based on our one visit, and there wasn't anyone to greet us when we first walked in, so I can kinda see why people complain about the service here sometimes. For vegetarians, you can turn any burger into a veggie option for no charge. I had the Alabama Hills burger with mushrooms and cheese. My wife had the Nevada Smith burger, also with a veggie patty. Portion sizes were just right, not on the heavy side. Food available as takeaway or dining in parking lot - most tables have coverings to keep you out of the sun. The Mt. Whitney is a classic diner, serving a classic American menu. Their signs say they serve Lone Pine's best burgers, as well. The seating is mostly booths, and the walls are covered with movie stills (many autographed). I had the roast turkey dinner, and it was very good. 2 slices of turkey breast, mashed potatoes, both covered in gravy. Whole berry cranberry sauce and green peas completed the plate. For dessert, I had a huge slice of hot cherry pie with vanilla ice cream. Delicious! My wife had a toasted cheese sandwhich which was toasted golden brown and crispy (both sides!). Lots of cheese, nicely melted. She said it was perfect. A nice glass of cab for her and a local craft beer on tap for me completed our meals. Cool little place with tons of old movie photos on the walls. My hubby says he had the best burger here after climbing Whitney so we came here while in the area. Huge basket of fried zucchini was gobbled up before you blink. Nice batter and well cooked. Fries were also good. All burgers come with fresh lettuce, slice of tomato, red onion and pickles on the side. I had the blue cheese burger which had ton of blue cheese. I hate when restaurants skimp on the blue cheese. We also had the combo burger, a grilled cheese and the Mt. Whitney. All burgers come with fries or onion rings. Like the zucchini, the batter on the rings was tasty and cooked well. This was our first meal after finishing a 55+ mile hike from Union Valley to Horseshoe Meadows and it was deeeelicious. The walls are covered with old black and white old western photos and actors. Its very casual (we came straight from the trail) and filled w a bunch of booths. There's also a small icecream shop inside. I ordered the turkey burger with bacon and cheese and it tasted like the best burger I've ever had. Soft bun, crispy bacon, all the fixings and french fries. The $9.99 burgers shown on the menu on Yelp now start at $17 and go up from there. Not much value for money, bun, burger patty, slice of cheese, with lettuce, tomato slice, onion slice and a few pickles. Very average. Side of ordinary fries. Soda $3. Lunch for 2 with tax and tip, a little over $50. About an hour for lunch, 30 minutes for food after order. read more

My son and I arrived at Lone Pine 7:30 friday night. Checked in our motel and asked the motel manager where to get burgers. After driving 3 hours from Bakersfield, we both were hungry and wanted burgers. He said, go to Mt. Whitney in one block on the west side of the road. You wont be disappointed. There was huge selection of burgers. My son had the Black Rock and I had the Onion Valley. I had a few questions and the waitress was quite helpful. There was a decent crowd in the restaurant. Social distancing was definitely observed. Every waitress had a mask. The food came in less than 10 minutes. We both love our burgers. You had the choice of fries or onion rings. One of the worst dining experiences ever. The food is terrible - greasy, old, flavorless ingredients - and the service was down right humiliating. After paying our bill we got up to leave the restaurant. As we're walking out the door our waitress starts YELLING at us that we didn't pay our bill (the overpriced $80+ bill) that we most certainly did pay. My husband and step-brother both calmly try to tell the woman that we've paid. Not only does she refuse to listen, she starts DEMANDING to know who we paid. She didn't stop yelling at my husband until my father, having heard the commotion, walked back inside the restaurant to see what was going on. Upon seeing him she instantly changed her tune and said she confused the tables. Another important detail - my husband is African American. My father is white. This woman was serving ALL of us for a good hour and everything was fine when we left her an undeserved 15% tip. We've had to spend our car ride home explaining racial profiling and racism to my completely shocked and alarmed step-brothers. I'm so furious right now I'm shaking as I type this. This was our second visit to this restaurant and will for sure be our last. Not great the first time but decided to give it a second chance. Bad mistake. Service was ok but the food is absolutely disgusting. Ordered a chili cheeseburger and the chili was more like pork and beans.... no meat and no seasoning. Not even warm enough to even begin to melt the cheese. Grilled egg/cheese sandwich was just ok but the onion rings we ordered on the side were inedible. Like take a bite and had to spit it out in my napkin inedible. Only ordered them because the menu stated they made beer battered onion rings. Received 4 tiny breaded Burger King type onion rings that TASTED LIKE OLD FISH. This place does not change their oil. In reading other reviews it seems many others have had fishy tasting fried sides. No itemized checks. The waitress just presented us with a total on her handheld unit. $28 for the burger, the egg and cheese sandwich and 1 drink. Still trying to figure out the math on that. 2 stars only because the waitress was friendly but the kitchen needs serious help. read more

A big group of us were in the Alabama Hills camping and climbing so we descended into town to beat the heat and grab a bite. The staff is friendly, accommodating our group with lots of kids (and food allergies), as well as splitting the check to help us out. Everyone had a decent enough meal, but it was just that, decent. I opted for the elk burger, and it was definitely not worth the extra charge for the exotic meat over a regular patty. So if you have a large group, or if everyone wants something different, then there are plenty of options on the menu and the staff is great. read more
