Also a big plus was the cool aesthetic inside, with all of the old photographs and antiques. It creates a very enjoyable atmosphere. There aren't many diners to choose from when you're coming off the slopes of Mt. Whitney into the small town of Lone Pine, that sits at the base of the famous mountain. No, on this March morning I wasn't backpacking Mt. Whitney, but I was camping in nearby Panamint Valley, and I was looking for a great breakfast, so I made to drive to Lone Pine, to enjoy the fine cuisine of the Mt. Whitney Restaurant. My visit to this fine restaurant was actually in March of last year, and I'm now just getting around to publishing it on Yelp. Over the years, many movies, mostly western, have been filmed in and around Lone Pine, particularly in the nearby Alabama Hills, just west of town. The restaurant is decorated with movie photos - many of them signed - from countless Hollywood westerns that have been filmed near town. In keeping with the area, the decor is quite western, including a set of horns from a Texas longhorn bull. Mt. Whitney Restaurant's breakfast menu offers many choices, but I homed in on chorizo and eggs, and that sounded spectacular. Side choices include toast, biscuit and gravy or corn tortillas, so I broke out of the mold and ordered corn tortillas, and received for perfectly toasted corn tortillas. My friendly server, Mitzie asked if I wanted salsa - duh - and she brought out a little cup of delicious in-house made salsa. The breakfast comes with a MOUNTAIN hash browns! They're delicious, as they're fried to a golden brown on the outside, but the inside is chewy and yummy. Naturally the eggs and chorizo were mixed together. The tortillas arrived on a separate plate, but I put 'em on the hash browns, as that just seemed like the natural thing to do. The salsa was heavenly. This was a delicious breakfast! Mt. Whitney Restaurant is a great diner, and is a favorite of locals, truckers, cowboys, and the many people who drive on U.S. 395. The food is delicious, the decor is quaint, and the staff is friendly. When you're visiting Lone Pine, I'd recommend a stop at Mt. Whitney Restaurant for a delicious meal. This is your basic eastern Sierra diner, which serves delicious, solid, diner cuisine, in a very basic restaurant. I love it! Cute little diner for tourists and locals alike. Friendly service, and they advertise the best burger in town. I don't think there are a lot of burgers in town, and theirs are a bit higher on price, but the patties are juicy and thick so you do get what you pay for. The Horseshoe Meadow is a double, and I love the grill lines. They also make pretty good fries, and there are plenty of other sides as well if you're not feeling potatoes. If you ask nicely they'll even let you get a piece of deep-fried corn on the cob, and what doesn't taste good when it's deep-fried? It's a long road trip up to Reno, but we're discovering all sorts of new stops along the way. Time to check Lone Pine's best burger off the 395 bucket list! read more

Been coming here for years and it just seems like the service is just getting worse. Waited at the counter for 15 minutes before I had to say something to get them acknowledge me. Absolute terrible customer service. Will not be coming here again. It is my opinion that they strongly deserve a one star at this time. This is a belated review for Friday night dinner. This is our usual place to eat in Lone Pines. We arrived in the evening and yelp say it was open for another hour. As we entered the restaurant, there were many customers inside dining. However, we were told that it was closed. I didn't see any business hour on the door. Minus 1 star. The staff who talked to us was kind enough to provide 2 clam chowders togo. He also included plastic spoons and napkins. After driving several hours and being very hungry. We are extremely grateful because it was such a nice thing to do. We ended up eating the clam chowder in our car. I liked my foam cup until it was clean.. You also have the option to get crispy chicken, turkey, and a few other types of meat. It comes with egg, shredded cheddar cheese, and tons of dressings you can choose from. The portion is pretty big. And the vegetables were fresh. The breakfast here is pretty cheap. I got their sausage and eggs. These come with your choice of bread as well as hash brown. The hash browns were cooked perfectly. It wasn't too oily. It wasn't too soggy. Just the right amount of crispiness. I like this place. My only complaint is the slow service... And the cleanliness. Food was solid American, with great mashed potatoes, a perfectly grilled grilled cheese sandwich, with cheese perfectly melted. I got the biscuits & gravy for hike carbs and they are very thick biscuits; I ordered 3, but could only finish 2. For dinner I got the maverick burger w pastrami and it was only so-so. Since the county is now permitting indoor seating, I thought I'd give them a try with social distancing well observed. Though the service was prompt and courteous, the meat loaf I received was as described by the waitperson: a lot of vegetables. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT ORDER THE MEATLOAF as I would have to describe it mushy slop smothered with gravy. The green beans were straight out of a can and over cooked. The only good part was the baked potato. I don't know why I didn't send it back because I'm usually the first one to return an unsatisfactory meal or anything for that matter. When we got to the restaurant, the prices averaged $15 per entree above the online menu prices. We asked the server about it and she said they knew that but it cost too much to change it. The service was friendly and relaxed, especially after I began asking about the history of the restaurant, as the waitress was noticeably excited about talking about Lone Pine and the restaurant's history. I would not come here if I were in a hurry, as things seem to happen at a leisurely, casual pace here based on our one visit, and there wasn't anyone to greet us when we first walked in, so I can kinda see why people complain about the service here sometimes. I saw a few bad reviews for this place and I have no idea why. The food was absolutely incredible. I had jalapeño poppers,a blue cheese burger with fries, a dinner salad and a homemade piece of blueberry pie. All of it was amazing. The staff was friendly and filled our glasses and got us anything we needed quickly and basically every table in the restaurant was filled. I had the roast turkey dinner, and it was very good. 2 slices of turkey breast, mashed potatoes, both covered in gravy. Whole berry cranberry sauce and green peas completed the plate. For dessert, I had a huge slice of hot cherry pie with vanilla ice cream. Delicious! My wife had a toasted cheese sandwhich which was toasted golden brown and crispy (both sides!). Lots of cheese, nicely melted. She said it was perfect. A nice glass of cab for her and a local craft beer on tap for me completed our meals. This was our first meal after finishing a 55+ mile hike from Union Valley to Horseshoe Meadows and it was deeeelicious. The walls are covered with old black and white old western photos and actors. One of the worst dining experiences ever. The food is terrible - greasy, old, flavorless ingredients - and the service was down right humiliating. After paying our bill we got up to leave the restaurant. As we're walking out the door our waitress starts YELLING at us that we didn't pay our bill (the overpriced $80+ bill) that we most certainly did pay. My husband and step-brother both calmly try to tell the woman that we've paid. Not only does she refuse to listen, she starts DEMANDING to know who we paid. She didn't stop yelling at my husband until my father, having heard the commotion, walked back inside the restaurant to see what was going on. Upon seeing him she instantly changed her tune and said she confused the tables. Another important detail - my husband is African American. My father is white. This woman was serving ALL of us for a good hour and everything was fine when we left her an undeserved 15% tip.
