Not bad, but not great either. Got the burger on sourdough and it was a round burger patty between two rectangular pieces of bread (i.e. around 50% of the meal was only bread. Friend got a bacon burger - nothing special. Nice (but slow) service. Also, all the prices on the "menu" section of Google Maps are incorrect as of October 2018 (everything is more expensive now). read more

Stopped to enjoy a bite to eat while passing through and was disappointed with this spot. No one greeted us upon walking in so we opted to self seat at the bar. Got handed a couple menus and then waited 8-10mins awkwardly. Another staff member was trying to help get us service and let us know our bartender was chatting around the corner. Food was basic, no Wow factor. Again when we finished we had to wait an awfully long time to get our check. Not sure what the problem is here but management should probably do some reconfiguring. My brother in law and I traveled to Lone Pine for a motorcycle trip. While we were there, we decided to try dining at a local restaurant in town. Looking through Yelp, we found several restaurants and after reading good reviews for Mt Whitney Restaurant, we decided to go there. We found the food, customer service and the restaurant to be very good. The food was delicious, the service was fast and courteous, and the restaurant was clean, warming and comfortable. I will definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone traveling to Lone Pine. read more

The food was good, but what's up with handing me a receipt for one amount, but when it came time to charge my card, not only did they charge an unadvertised "card fee@, but much more serious they showed specifically higher prices on each of the items when they charged the card on top of the 4% card fee.(e.g., hamburger shown as $10.00 on original receipt was charged at $10.40. If you put $10.40 on the menu and showed it on the first receipt, I would not have had an issue, but this is deceptive and dishonest. read more

Not a bad breakfast place located in the middle of town across the street from a backpackers hostel. An older establishment that appears to be family run Service was quite slow but lots of carbs and large helpings! ( got to carb up those hikers!). Not even three stars for this one. Order wasn't right. Burgers were mediocre, certainly not the best in town. The French fries were cooked in old oil that seemed to have a fishy taste. My Teriyaki burger was flavorless, the teriyaki sauce being thin and right out of a bottle. The chili burger had canned chili and little flavor. Let me start by saying that the food ,breakfast in this case was really (really) good. Wifey and I have driven by this place a half dozen times in the last year but due to the COVID crap going on we never stopped so this time we made it a point to stop here on our way back to Nevada today. OK now to the meat of this review.... Breakfast was spot on , eggs cooked perfectly , hash browns crispy but not too , pancakes light and fluffy and don't forget the bacon-crisp just how I like it...A+ 5 Stars to the kitchen staff ! Thats the good , now the not so good..... Overall yes the place was "clean" .."cleanish" BUT the floor had been neglected and didn't look like it had been swept in a while and sticky !! Pretty much felt like my shoes were going to get pulled off my feet with each step..you could hear the sticky !! Thats not even the bad part. While the staff overall was pleasant they were less than attentive to the customers. Most of their time was spent behind the service area cackling with each other about social status and latest gossip on friends and not friends , parties and social calendars ....and it was LOUD and peppered with occasional curse words mixed with laughter and more chatter....maybe it was just an off day for the service staff. IDK Well after we had our fill of pancakes (and teenage gossip) I had to flag down a waitress to get our check. New Owners I think from 4 or 5 years ago...service was impeccable. Server was a young man named, "Chris" (I think). Food was very good! Had an Alabama Hills burger. Very nice! But they handled the Coronavirus better than any restaurant I've been in so far, anywhere! They deserve an award. They wore masks, utilized hand sanitizers, had you run your own credit card, etc.! Most restaurants have some noticeable flaws. Either the server touches the credit card, the credit card runner thing, and then your food without sanitizing or worse. I didn't find one flaw at Mt. SHOCKING !! AVOID . To start off, Lone Pine has a handful of eateries and "ideally" this place ( based on the exterior looks ) should do a decent job of feeding people, mostly hikers . With that thought process, and ignoring some terrible reviews ( my bad ! ) , I still gambled and IT DID NOT PAY OFF. So I had completed the hike to mount Whitney yesterday. In celebratory mode ( which I think is the backdrop of some of the good reviews for this place ) I ordered a plate of chips and Salsa to start things off . And at the end of the meal, chips and salsa was the only half decent dish on the table . Other food items which I had ordered were the cliched "MT WHITNEY BURGER" , "THE PHILLY" AND the god forsaken ONION RINGS. Let me provide and honest review - absolutely inedible. The burger was over done , the philly sandwich bread was stale , and the meats were outdated from the taste of it. Onion rings were murdered . I mean you won't even eat them by mere looking at it. Oil was all over the place , rings reeking of oil. Batter had no taste, spices. WE paid $50 for this experience after hiking Mt. Whitney. Could have made better decisions, but you guys stay away, srsly. The only bright thing was that our server was super nice. read more

STATS: Free parking in private lot available Free drink refills included Winter Hours: 6am-9pm; Summer Hours: 6am-10pm off later if need be EXPERIENCE: Another dated, yet quaint establishment with booths and tables with chairs, this restaurant packs a lot food on their plates. I had already eaten at the our motel, so I was sitting this one out, literally. All the same, I skimmed their fairly extensive menu, which admitted the standard beef and chicken, as well as American bison, venison, ostrich, and elk. Hike Leader and SisTa couldn't decide on whether their last civil meal before hikin' it up be breakfast or lunch. After much pondering and discussion with the favorable server, Hike Leader decided on breakfast, biscuits and gravy and SisTa decided on Lunch, a chicken sandwich with rings and pickle slices. Sorry, no food porn available for this review. The thin air must have gotten to me and I forgot to do a photo session. Not just that, but I forgot what they ordered and I have not found an all inclusive current menu. Sorry. Nevertheless, on our way out, I did manage to get a couple snaps of the inside. Regardless, they both thought the food was good enough to finish, Hike Leader was almost to the point of picking up the plate and licking it clean. I had one of SisTa's onion rings. I was okay, nothing special. The Iced Tea I ordered was either over bagged and under watered, something was just not right about it. nevertheless, I drank it for the fluids. Mt. Whitney Restaurant is neither a one and done for me, nor a must return. There are other local restaurants I'd like to try before coming here again. Btw, the locals, we came into contact with while hangin' in the LP didn't know that a hiker died on Mt. Whitney two weeks prior. If you live in Southern California, Mt Whitney Restaurant sits along the way to and from Mammoth. Earlier this winter, the bf and I decided to stop here for lunch because we always enjoy supporting local businesses. The restaurant is very dated. Pictures of John Wayne and company are plastered everywhere on the walls. EVERYWHERE. It was kind of overwhelming. We were greeted by a server that told us to sit anywhere. She looked liked she had a rough night the night before because she was un-kept. We sat at a booth and immediately noticed how cold the restaurant was. I kept my jacket on. The food that we ordered was bland and uninspiring. My Philly cheese sandwich looked depressing and limp. It needed seasoning and the bread was stale. The bf got the steak sandwich. It was steak on top of a toasted bread, fries, and 3 slices of tomatoes. This was coupled with lackluster service. I don't think we'll be revisiting. read more

After a long hike, this is exactly what you need...a fatty meal with friendly birds flying a head. Did a "friendly" bear go up to my car while no one was watching and I was hiking...YES! The burger was delicious, no bear damage outside of paw prints, and I made it home. What more can you ask for. read more

Turns out it just looked alot like the place I stopped when I made the drive before...inside and out...except that the place I ate at before was in Bishop, CA...which is a little north...like 60 miles or so. So I was only off by one restaurant and 60 miles... Anyway at Mt. Whitney Restaurant I had a green chili and cheese omelet which was ok but the eggs were kind of overcooked. The service was pretty good. There were lots of regulars who occasionally helped themselves to more coffee or whatever. read more

We had our Thanksgiving meal here. Hubby and son had veggie burgers with very decent salad and fries/baked potato. I had all the side dishes of their T-day special (Mashed potatoes, yams, green peas & carrots, stuffing, cranberry sauce, roll and a yummy pumpkin pie)! There were several locals, as well as traveling T-day diners like us. Everyone was enjoying their meals. The service was friendly and welcoming and our waitress didn't even roll her eyes or make a face when we said we were vegetarians. 8 D The inside walls of the restaurant were covered with dozens and dozens of photos of movie stars and scenes from the hundreds of movies that were filmed in the "Alabama Hills" just behind town. The food is not bad, fairly average, but couple the so-so grub with glacial service and I feel like I am doing people a service by rating the place one star. Realistically, food is probably 2 stars, and it is clean, etc but there are better places to eat in Lone Pine, and you can sadly get an equivalent burger at one of the fast foody places. Service was so slow though. Waited a very, very long time - think almost 30 minutes for 2 burgers and a BLT on a night when the place was maybe 1/3 full. Then they brought kids mac and cheese a full 8 minutes later? They even admit it is Kraft, not a bad thing, but that stuff takes 8 minutes to make at home, lol. One star. read more

It's 9:00pm and we just successfully descended from the peak of Mt. Whitney. All the stores are closed, and I literally mean ALL the stores all closed. We're hungry sort-of, we're severely dehydrated, and we're all exhausted. We were staying at the hostel across from us so we just walked over to this place because it was open until 10pm. When my friends arrived in the restaurant they were given menus and drinks and then the waitress disappeared. It wasn't until I joined them 15 minutes later did another waiter ended up servicing us. The waiter probably changed my entire eating experience at this restaurant. Firstly he was very attentive to our table and was very friendly. At the mention of sharing a bowl of green chili with my friend, the waiter offered me a free one! How amazing is that? But that isn't why I am giving this place 5 stars. So I ordered "The Maverick" burger, #10. The pastrami on the burger was pretty good, not the best pastrami I ever had but it was still delicious. The jack cheese coupled with the fresh onions, and the open bun (lettuce, tomato, and top bun on the side) was pretty awesome. The Chili Verde (green chili) was pretty good too. I've never had it! It tasted like a texture-wise lighter chili which features Jalapenos as it's main coloring flavor profile. It had corn in it, broiled pork, green beans, and various other ingredients. It was the first time I had such a chili and it was pretty good, but a bit too salty after a couple of bites. Back to the waiter. My water was always filled and he always asked if we needed anything (giving spaces in between so it didn't seem intrusive). At the end he even ended up chatting with our group since we experience someone who passed away on top of Mt. Whitney from 3 days of hypothermia. I had a great time visiting this location, at that current time. Please be advised Yelpers, I did my own little yelp research and the service is hit or miss. Ok so I'm giving this little place 5 stars. Think comfort food. For a diner ... Yum yum. The first thing to order is the soup of the day. Enjoy that because it is the bomb! The cook does soup good - name of cook that does soup is dahlia and pozole on Sundays!! Been stopping here for years on the way to Mammoth Lakes and back to LA. Kids meals - I always order one chicken strips order and split it as it comes with 3 6"x 2.25" strips... Too much for one kid age 11. Chicken fried steak with mash - yum Really a bowl of soup and the salad would be a great choice! Simple, filling and good. All their meal of the day choices - yum Skip the fries go for the baked potatoe - healthier option and guess what? Yum ! Choco ice cream with whipped cream is basic and once again, yum! Before I forget - order salad with blue cheese dressing but ask for chunks of blue cheese on top ..... Yum yum yummy And share orders as it's all big. AMbiance: The great thing about the staff is that they take care of each other's tables so we were asked if we needed anything else or if we were done by 3 different people. The restaurant has all kinds of western celebrity photos up. There's even a piano in there, but not sure what day they have live music. Food: Both entrees were not bad except a bit bland. Portions are slightly high, but portions are decent. 1. Alabama Burger- Good, but couldn't really taste the mushrooms. I liked the crunchiness of the fries on the outside. 2. Spaghetti- Though the menu says large portion, it was the same size as most other restaurants. I wish it had more meat in it since it emphasized their own meat sauce. Located on Lone pine on the 395, Mt. Whitney Restaurant is a very nice stop over while going through the town, or as a final dinner destination after visiting the Alabama Hills, Mount Whitney, or the town itself. With decor and ambiance of times gone by when the town hosted almost all the filmed serialized western TV shows of the era, the place is nevertheless cozy, specially in winter days and nights. The staff is fast, polite and attentive, and with no qualms of having your meal your way (guilty). The food is quite good and tasty. Some of the offerings are larger than expected (specially breakfast). Charbroiled burgers are nice and juicy, and they offer venison, buffalo, and elk patties too. Large, crunchy french fries (a little salt happy sometimes). Trout (?!) is excellent and strangely fresher than some other seafood restaurants on the coast, the same with their Clam Chowder (figure that one out). Cottage cheese?. Yes, please. Grilled Cheese Sandwich, old fashion, but it bloody still rocks anywhere =) (you screw up this dish, dude, just give it up). Livers and Onions sans Onions: Tender/juicy. As stated, breakfast is both good, and sometimes too much (omelets), specially if you order extra gravy with your hash brows (duh). Alabama Hills Burger with extra mushrooms (and avocado,... and a fried egg on top [what?]) was my favorite. Other foods to try next time: Elk and Veggie burgers, Roast Turkey, and fried Zucchinis. They speak "Low Carb/Vegan" too. Caveats: * The "Hmm": Finally had Mt. Whitney Buffalo Burger, had it, okay. The "Buffalo" part didn't do anything for me, good or bad (sokay). * The "Meh": Chili. Just plain chili. Mozzarella cheese sticks: drain their oil case before serving, please. Shrimp not Trout quality. * The Bad: Spaghetti on the range. Fail. Really good food, awesome service, and friendly conversation. The portions are large, and absolutely delicious. They brought out a bowl of their chili verde soup for us to sample, with our meal. Amazing! We could have probably eaten just the soup. The burgers were really amazing. The club sandwich was HUGE! Spaghetti was wonderful... the chips were home made and came with really tasty salsa. I am so glad that the pizza place wouldn't serve us, because it was 45 mins before closing..... because we would have never tried this place. Everything happens for a reason, right? Fortunately, common sense stepped in and persuaded me to leave it. We could have saved $25 and done what we ended up doing, which was going to the market and buying crackers and cheese. For the record, I had spagetti and what was advertised as marinara sauce. The food arrived lukewarm and tasted unappetizing. She had a plate of tomato, cottage cheese, sliced egg, and grilled chicken. She described the cottage cheese as "fresh" and the chicken as "mostly OK but weird around the edges." Hadn't had a restaurant visit like this in a while. We started following the hostess to be seated but she rushed ahead and we followed her into the other room, where she was already waiting on another group. We didn't realize she'd dropped our menus on a table and walked off. We went to sit at our table and just waited there for 10-15 minutes. Nobody approached us - not even to bring us water. There were others walking around and looking at us but nobody approached. After realizing that no one was going to bother taking our order any time soon, we just got up and left. Before leaving, the guy at the table next to ours had a problem with his order and asked the waitress who just shrugged him off so the guy took his plate, got up, and walked to the kitchen to get his question answered. Never seen anything like it. It's a small town joint so things are going to be slower but I've been to much more secluded places in places much more laid back than this one and the service has not been this bad.
