My dog, Max, has been going for group dog walks twice a week with Carla. She is great and Max LOVES her (almost more than me I think!!). She is so careful to only pair him with dogs that will accept him and play nice. He is super friendly 7 month old and can sometimes be annoying to other older dogs. She knows how to read these dogs and will not chance any sort of questionable behavior from the dogs. I can totally trust her with Max and know he will be in good hands. Jena has also been very responsive to emails and messages and is very helpful in arranging Max's walks. I highly recommend them!! read more

DO NOT USE MUDDY PAWS. THE OWNER OF THIS BUSINESS DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR SUPPORT. I initially enjoyed using the services at Muddy Paws. I had a wonderful meet and greet session with Melanie who was lovely and my dog took a liking to her. Melanie is amazing. However the woman who runs the business, Jena Howard, needs to learn some manners. I had a TERRIBLE experience with her. For starters, no one mentioned that the person whom you do the meet and greet with will not be the only person coming to complete the services requested. I had scheduled a 30 minute visit for someone to come take my dog out for a walk and at a certain time during the day. It wasn't until 2 hours AFTER my scheduled service that someone showed up to my house to walk my dog. Mind you my dog hasn't met this person yet, which worried me because she can be shy. I was extremely disappointed that no one from Muddy Paws contacted me that my original dog walker could not make the time requested, as it was already approved. And instead sent a male to the house hours AFTER my requested time. To begin with, who made the decision that I needed someone at that time? Not me? For all they know I could've been home by then. Instead of contacting me, Jena decided to send someone else to my house hours after I requested without reaching out to me first. Now, we have ring cameras on the outside of the house and we noticed a gentleman trying to break into the house - trying all doors and side windows to get a way in. With my dog home alone inside barking up a storm. We had nothing else to do besides call the cops, as there is an unfamiliar man trying to get into the house hours after our requested time, so to us it could not have been muddy paws. I've come to realize that Jena sent someone else to my house, and hours later - unsure why she made this call on her own. I tried calling as the company's phone number is listed but of course no answer. I begun to exchange emails with Jena leaving her my number and asking her to contact me SEVERAL times without her reaching out. By the time the cops got there, the man was gone and no where in site. I've asked Jena to inform me on what the male dog walker was wearing so that we would no if it was him or someone else trying to break in. she was not responding to me and I was rushing on my way home at this point to make sure everything was okay. I get inside my home and find a cell phone on the kitchen counter (apparently the dog walker locked his phone inside my home and was unable to get back inside since the code to the lock was on my profile online). And I see Jena texting the dog walker "Prefacing this by saying ***'s owner and father are nuts: Can you please let me know what..." "Can you please let me know what you had on today so I can deal with these lunatics?" Jena, the owner of Muddy Paws, referring to my family as nuts and lunatics. I wonder how she would have acted if a stranger was trying to break into her home to get his phone back when no one communicated with her that the original dog walker was unavailable and that no one was able to come at the time requested. Jena is a poor business owner. Her mannerisms are outstandingly upsetting. And how she treats her customers is so shocking that I'm surprised she is still in business. Ive read many reviews of her company after this incident and I cannot believe I was blinded to all of this. I most certainly will never use muddy paws and I do not recommend it to anyone. Positives: - Dog walkers care about the dogs and leave detailed journals with photos. - Owner is quick to respond to emails/requests. - Website is easy to use. Negatives: - We could not rely on the dogs being walked during the time they were supposed to. (Not just off by 20-30 minutes, but sometimes 2-3 hours late). We communicated this concern to the owner, and the very next day, the dogs were walked 3 hours late. - You never know which walker will come for your dog. We had 3 different walkers in 2 weeks. - Concerns and complaints we had were routinely dismissed and addressed with excuses instead of an apology or steps to make it right (ex: making sure the same thing doesn't happen the next walk, partial refund, etc.) Have used several different services in the last few cities we have lived in, and while we understand that walkers can't come at the exact same time every day, this was the only service we have used where the hours were so unreliable. read more

This review is for their cat sitting services. I have used Muddy Paws cat sitting service for a few years now. I have always been pleased. While I have never been unhappy with the service provided, my favorite two sitters have been Travis and Chris. What I appreciate about the service is the daily reports. This past visit was a little more involved as I recently got a new cat after the old one died and the new cat and current cat are still at odds and had to be kept separated while I was gone. ***UPDATED REVIEW*** I started using Muddy Paws when I got my dog in June, he's a rescue and we didn't think he was socialized enough for doggy daycare yet. At first, I really like the dog walker and the ease of the online scheduling. Our dog walker switched and my boyfriend and I were suspicious about him being walked close to the full hour we were paying for. The dog walker switched again and at first we really liked him. Again, it became apparent that he wasn't getting walked adequately, we would come home sometimes and he would be fine and other times he would be way too energetic to have had almost an hour walk. Then, we got an August door lock, which meant we were able to track the comings and goings of the dog walker. Several times, he walked the dog for about 20 minutes, one time, even hanging out in my condo for 15 minutes. Then, twice, he came and literally just let the dog out to go to the bathroom (a total of like 8 minutes out of the house). The owner emailed me when we cancelled our walks and I let her know, she requested screen shots of the door lock, which I sent, and then STOPPED RESPONDING to my emails suddenly. I had requested a refund, which she obviously didn't give me. I then complained to the BBB and she didn't even respond to them. She then had the audacity to tell me that she was waiving the fee for me canceling my recurring walls. Seriously disappointed that she couldn't respect me enough to respond to my emails or give me some kind of refund for the terrible service I got toward the end. Find someone else. The owner, Jena, replied to my review on Google after this and I emailed her to continue our conversation. She mailed me a refund check for the last payment I made and returned my key fob. I am glad to have the situation properly addressed, though it took more effort on my part than I would have liked and she continued to talk make her case that we were both wronged in this situation. We were very happy with MP until our puppy dog got bitten under one of their dog walkers' supervision. Not only did this happen under one of their dog walkers, but we had to find this out after we came home to our dog who was showing signs of discomfort etc. We had been with MP for a while at that point and gave them the benefit of the doubt to see how the owner reacts to the incident. We have not even received a call and/or a message of comfort from Jenna - We understand legally people do not want to admit guilt, but we weren't looking for anything as such. I originally had a regular walking schedule a few days a week - but now I primarily use Jena for overnights b/c we travel a lot. I can tell you, when I take my dog to Muddy Paws - she KNOWS she's going to have a good time. Despite her separation anxiety, when we get there... the tail starts to wag & she rushes the gate to go play with her puppy friends. Jena provides updates on how she's doing, gets back to me when I worry & is a total professional. She has NEVER turned me away & has ALWAYS found a way to accommodate my schedule. I didn't know what to do with my 2 dogs and 4 cats when I went away for a long weekend recently. I always take the dogs with me on weekend trips and the cats are usually OK by themselves for a couple days. This was going to be the first time leaving all my pets at home by themselves for more than an overnight trip. I considered kenneling my dogs and leaving enough food for the cats for a few days, but decided to try hiring a dog walker. i was so happy that I called Muddy Paws! Mary Ellen came out to meet me and my pets on Friday night. I have a 15-year old Husky and a 12-month old Pitbull who was on prescription anti-biotics. She was friendly and knowledgeable. She agreed to walk the dogs twice a day, feed them AND the cats, give my Pittie her meds, and (oh by the way) she also agreed to feed my fish as well. When I came home, my house was neat and poop-free. The fact that it was neat meant that my Pittie did not get bored and destroy everything within her reach. Mary Ellen left notes for me about each visit she made. She was very sweet and caring. I would hire her again in a heartbeat. That was 2 weeks ago, and I wanted to write a good review immediately, but was waiting for the bill just to make sure my review was complete. I didn't want to write a glowing review and then get a bill for a ton of money and go back and say"wait a minute...they charge too much". I finally got the bill this week and am very happy to say that they are a very good bargain as well. It cost me less money than it would have to kennel my dogs. They got to stay home, got better treatment, AND my cats got looked after also. I had a really hard time finding a dog walker that serves East Arlington. I talked to almost a dozen different dog walkers until I was referred to Muddy Paws who serves towns all over the map. I made an appointment for Jena (the owner) and (Larisa) my area's walker to come over and meet Dempsey and check out my neighborhood. Jena and Larisa were right on time and I could tell right away that they are both very knowledgeable about dogs and dog behavior. Dempsey was immediately in love with both of them, a very good sign in my opinion. Jena and Larisa both asked all the appropriate questions about Dempsey in order to be sure they knew her well before taking her on. Demps is deaf and has some weird issues with other dogs but Larisa was not daunted by this. She just wanted to prepare herself to handle my crazy pooch. Larisa leaves me a note every time she walks Demps and I can always tell that my pooch has had a great walk. Demps is calmer and happier on walking days and it lets me run errands after work without worrying about how she is doing. We have two scheduled days a week, but even when I have called at the last minute Jena and Larisa have been able to accommodate me. Muddy Paws sends a bi-weekly invoice which makes payment super simple. Leaving cash on the table for the previous walker was a pain. I love Muddy Paws and highly recommend them! read more

Now that we have been a Muddy Paws client for almost 3 years (time flies!) I thought that it would be a good time to update my review. Jena and her team are awesome. We especially love Cathy and Meg who are our fairly regular walkers. They go out of their way to make sure my pups are having fun and to make sure we know how they are doing when we aren't at the house. Cathy actually came over to bring them specially made ice toys on her day off during the summer... just because. How awesome is that? My pups love her. One of the things that I love most about Muddy Paws is that they are also keeping up on technology. Their new scheduling tool is a breeze to use, and I can pay online with a credit card now, which is so much easier than writing a check! They also have a new feature that sends you a link to an online journal about your visit. So cool. We were at a wedding the other day and were able to get an udpate on our pups while we were out and about. Thanks to Jena and her team for being so reliable. We are Muddy paws fans! read more

Unprofessional and disappointing are the only words I can think of to describe the service offerings of Muddy Paws. I had only been using this service for a week and a half for my small dog, Larry, when I received an email mid-week from a manager informing me that my service would be cancelled. My dog had not been walked for 2 of the 3 days that the dog walker came to my home - which is not what I agreed to pay for. I find it very unprofessional that they would cancel the service on us mid-week when we did not have an opportunity to find a replacement. Messages from our dog walker stated that her relationship with Larry was a 'work in progress.' She had only spent a cumulative hour and a half with Larry, which I would not consider a sufficient effort to earn his trust.  As a professional dog walker I would expect that she would be aware that a shelter dog like Larry takes a bit to warm up to new people. We also spent time in our meet and greet with her explaining his unique circumstances. Muddy Paws may want to consider looking into finding employees who are more comfortable around dogs.  I would not expect a professional dog walker to be afraid of a 20 pound dog. Muddy Paws took no effort to find a new dog walker for Larry and instead chose to cancel my service. On top of this, I responded to an email to tell the manager when my house keys could be returned. She did not reply to my response and took it upon herself​ to leave my keys in my mailbox. This is incredibly unprofessional (not to mention unsecure and illegal). Lastly, Muddy Paws sent me an invoice and expected me to pay for all of this. Save yourself the trouble. Do not use this service. read more

I have been a customer of Muddy Paws for about a year. They are truly a cut above the rest when it comes to the care of our fur babies. Jena Howard and her team provide a serious form of integrity and professionalism when handling any issues you might have. My bulldog loves all of his walkers. When I'm out and about on my personal walks with him and we run into our walkers he instantly runs over to them lovingly. If that alone doesn't show you the tremendous amount of care these employees put in, I don't know what does. The pricing is fair for the service you receive. If our family felt that our concerns would have been heard, we would have invested the time in making a call....however, while we were away it took over 24 hrs to receive a return call about our dog and when we did get the call the message we received was complaints about our dog, "more than was expected", "never listens", and that he "made you hurt your back" when he was walked. We brought him to our veterinarian who said that his neck was bitten at least 6 times over the 3 days that he was under your supervision, and since the dogs are left unsupervised when home visits are done, we assumed it must have happened during one of these periods. Please note that these were not "play" bites as suggested, they were very deep bites and they are still healing. This was not a good situation for our dog and wanted to inform other people about our experience. read more

I have used Jena and her staff at Muddy Paws for the past year and I could not be happier!! My shih-tzu Maxie is walked daily (rain or shine!) by Mary Ellen. Everyday I receive a note summarizing her walk (who she was with, what business she did). Not only does my dog get her walk she gets socialization time with other dogs (a great deal!). In addition I have boarded my dog with Jena at her house numerous times and overall the experience has been great. I travel frequently for work and Maxie gets picked up and dropped off my house so there is no juggling my schedule to drop her off or pick her up during an alloted time. I love knowing that when I am out of town my dog is safe with another animal lover and is being treated like she is one of the family!! I truly think Jena's dogs helped potty train mine!! I highly recommend Muddy Paws! Jena was able to accomodate our needs on very short notice. We had just gotten our puppy and my husband was heading out of town on business. I knew that our pup would never make it through the 3.5 hours that I work so I gave Jena a call. She and Ashley came to my home the day after I called and were able to service us immediately. My husband works from home but is also called out of town quite often. Some weeks we need 5 days of service, some weeks we need none. I called several times to arrange services for my cat with this facility, then when I finally got a call back from the owner her price was much more then I was used to paying and told her I would call back to confirm. She never returned the two confirmation calls. Then next time I called her to walk my dog and feed for the three days I was going to be gone. I left several messages with my number and when I need service, again I never got a response. How can you run a business like this? Didn't get my messages? So sad that I have to write this update. I loved having Lori as my cat sitter, but the owner, Jena, is a total mess. Before their online system was introduced, she would take days to reply to emails, always with some excuse or another. I ended up just always texting Lori to make sure she was free on whatever days I needed her, which seemed to work out with Jena just fine, as she never had to bother with scheduling. I want to also point out that Jena was the one who originally gave me Lori's number. Then the online system was introduced, and I moved to a different town. Lori and I still communicated by text and she told me she was happy to continue cat sitting, which I was grateful for as my cat is now familiar with her and they get along. A couple of days ago, I requested pet sitting for September, and texted Lori as usual to inquire about her dates. I never got a text back so I assumed she changed her number, and I contacted Jena to ask for her new contact information. Jena writes back to me that they never give out any employees' personal contact information, that Lori does not service the town I move to, that they have someone who does sitting in my town and that will be the person who will be cat sitting for me, and that there will be a $15.00 charge for pick up of the keys. So basically, unless I had contacted her, I would not have known until the last minute that a total stranger would be coming into my home and taking care of my cat, and that if I wanted to meet up with this stranger who does not have my keys (of course they don't, they're a new sitter!!), I would be charged $15.00 for it. Shady shady shady. I immediately cancelled and found a new pet sitting service in the area. SO sad though.. despite how irresponsible and inconsiderate the owner is, the sitter was great :( read more

I found it amazing that this company could find such great employees in an economy w such low unemployment. The company is organized, on time and if there were any conflicts they always found a solution (like the owner showing up to do the walk). We have been looking for a pet sitting service for our small farm of animals - we have two older dogs, a cat, a rabbit and a bird. We enjoy weekend trips now and then and have happily used muddy paws a few times now. Jena and Ashley came over to meet the dogs before sitting the first time. Ashley has taken good care of the animals each time so that we do not worry too much while away. Our one dog is diabetic so it is difficult to find boarding that will administer insulin. Ashley was happy to learn and we definitely trust her to do a great job! It is also a very good price for taking care of the dogs and knowing someone is at least looking after the other animals as well in case they run out of water or food unexpectedly. I have been a client of Muddy Paws for almost a year now. I made the change from my last dog walker due to the glowing reviews of my neighbors. I am so glad we made the change... and so is Elma! Jena and her team are fantastic. They have been very professional, compassionate, and flexible from the beginning. Everyone I have met has been awesome but our favorite person has to be Marlene. Marlene walks Elma every day and I know she is in great hands and comes home happy and ready for an afternoon nap. I really enjoy checking my email at work and reading Marlene's funny and thoughtful notes to let me know how Elma's day went, her energy level, and what buddies she played with. She's even cleaned up some explosive accidents that I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemies. I know Elma loves her and I couldn't say enough nice things about her. Elma has also had a couple of overnight stays with Jena at her home in Woburn and gets great socialization and wonderful family attention which is so important to me. Last Summer I went on a spur of the moment camping trip and after some frantic phone calls to some friends less than 24 hours later I dropped off our pup at Jena's home. She had a great time playing with Jena's dogs and the rest of the overnight pack. Muddy Paws makes it super easy. The online system also makes it so easy to schedule walks, cancel them if needed, and make payments. Normally when we go on long trips our cat is stressed/anxious when we come back (and has sometime left presents on my boyfriend's side of the couch), but this time she was very calm. I assume muddy paws is fine for the dog from UP. However they lack experience and expertise when it comes to a dog of any other temperament. I have to say i am disappointed in my experience with muddy paws. I began our entire interaction warning that my dog Lola is a high anxiety dog who takes a lot of time with new people and would need someone with patience and experience. They unfortunately sent over a walker with not as much experience with a high anxiety barker like my Lola (I would like to preface this to say that Lola is a fearful dog but NOT AGGRESSIVE, has had walkers for YEARS and never had the issues occur like what happened. Lola has to this day NEVER bitten anyone person, dog, squirrel) I have a security camera set up in the apt and when day 2 did not go well and she was unable to get Lola out for a walk i watched the video and saw exactly why. She stood in the corner of the apartment by the front door threw treats at her and said "stop barking" Lola never even got off the couch. I voiced my concerns immediately and let them know I thought this walker was not a good fit, they continued to have her try and work on Lola for two weeks with no success. I voiced my concerns again and demanded a new walker and the owner came without any introduction and came into my home and yell at Lola (while she barked, never getting off the couch with her tail between her legs which i have on video). I expressed because she had never met Lola with me and been properly introduced (which when i started was a non-starter, i needed to be there for the introductions) She told me my dog was aggressive. Even though that is pretty touch when she doesn't even get off the couch.We both decided to amicably split ways. Then i get a bill for all the unsuccessful walks! And a bill for walks i was told in email communications i would not be charged for. THEN when i demanded my key back they wanted to go onto my back porch, which looks right into my home and scares the beejeezus out of Lola, and use my LOCKBOX! I told them i did not want them on my porch and they said "we can ship it to you at your expense or return it for free via the lock box" They are unprofessional and wrong. I am glad i have videos and documentation of all the things they said. So they cannot respond below and claim that my dog was aggressive (Video sure proves a lot) Update: what Jena does not include. Is the email I sent explicitly explaining that Leah was a terrible fit, that I did. Not received the service I expected (which was someone to walk my dog. Btw I have a. Ew walker who not only instantly successfully walked Lola but she loves him and brings him toys upon his arrival) or the video I watched after the last communication that I watched of Jena screaming at my dog as she cowered on the couch barking with her tail between her legs and not getting off the couch. I think it is shameful Jena tries to blame the client or the dog when she apparently spends no time trying to train her employees. Also to be clear. Services rendered are actual dog walks. Which were not provided. The disappointment is the handling of the situation. Posting my communication below only shows my patience and your employees inexperience. The threats to bring me to court and inaccurate billing (since I do have in writing from Jena that certain walks would not be charged and yet are still being charged to me despite multiple communications that the items were inaccurate) it's a poor business plan and I simply hope that others do. I've been using Muddy Paws for over a year now and they've been nothing short of excellent from day 1. Marlene is our regular walker and she treats our pup like her own! She even gives our shameless attention-seeking kitty some love every time she drops in. She is consistent, efficient, and very reliable. Muddy Paws even came to the rescue on my wedding day with their concierge service when we so desperately wanted our dog to be a part of the formal photos but were not able to keep her at the ceremony and reception. Marlene safely escorted our girl to and from Maine and kept her calm and attentive during photos - which kept us happy and worry free on our day! I couldn't be happier with Muddy Paws! I'm a new customer with a new puppy and was very nervous to leave Sophie for the weekend. Bob, our caretaker, was phenomenal! He was friendly, funny, and kind. He set out minds at ease and updated us with reports and photos of our puppy all weekend. Jena made the business aspect of it very easy to arrange, even on short notice. I have two cats who we unfortunately have had to leave sometimes for several days at a time, and we have become very comfortable leaving them with Jena and her local team, Lauren and Elena - both of whom are also super wonderful. I admit that I was hesitant initially about more than one person being involved, but it has worked out well when one is not available and the other person can help without needing to set up coverage with a different care-taking service. They each came to make sure there were no questions before they took over coverage, and they have been wonderful with helping handle other minor needs like mail and plant watering if needed as we've been away. One example of how they have gone 'above and beyond'...Most recently we have been out of town due to a family illness for a much longer period than originally expected. After a couple of days I could not recall if I had left enough food in the auto feeder. I emailed Jena an urgent note asking to refill the auto-feeder. Lauren, who helps manage the watertown area, coordinated with Jena to get the right food and milk so the little guys never ran out. It was so reassuring to know they could take care of unexpected things so quickly. They are a real life saver. I would highly recommend this team- they do great work. read more

I wish I could give muddy paws zero stars what an awful experience . I am in the middle of working overtime and moving . I love my dog very much and wanted to make sure he was getting enough exercise while I am not around to walk him . It was very stressful trying to find a dog walker due to the fact that my dog Jake , while he loves people is not great with other dogs . I finally found muddy paws after much searching and thought it was a great fit seeing how they were able to pick up Jake from my work and drop him back off with me . I had emailed back and forth with Jena Howard who by the way is the CEO of the company who told me Eric would be walking Jake today Wednesday 4/20 and the following two days . I set up a meet and greet with Eric that went OK seeing as he was 40 minutes late . He seemed to do well with Jake and I was comfortable with Eric walking him . To my surprise at 2pm today Jena herself showed up to walk Jake not Eric . I got no email , no calls nothing to tell me the essentially a complete stranger who has never met my dog before would be walking him . As if this was not bad enough when I go out to introduce myself to Jena her attitude was horrible , no apologies and no explanation as to why Eric did not show up I had to ask her myself , then she continues with her poor attitude not seeming to interested in Jake but was so kind as to voice her issues with his harness because according to her it encourages dogs to pull . When she came back with Jake I felt the need to voice my concerns and feelings of being uncomfortable with the fact that she showed up to walk my dog with no notice . Jena could not have cared less again I received no apology all she said to me was she was surprised Eric didn't show up just like I was. This is a horrible way to run a business and having a CEO treat new clients like this sets a horrible tone for this company as a whole . A word of caution to those considering Muddy Paws - as I was interviewing several individuals and companies in the Somerville area for dog walking services, this was the only that ended up charging me $25 for a "meet and greet" to learn more about their company and for them to meet my dog. I would not have chosen to do the meet and greet if this had been made more clear to me upfront. I was told it was in the online agreement I signed via their website when I set up the appointment (and that could very well be true, I haven't bothered to log back on to check - though I KNOW it was not upfront, large type face or bolded, as I would definitely have noticed that) but it stills feels like a deceptive and unfair business practice to take a credit card in advance, and then charge the card without direct authorization (i.e. the "meet and greet" was not in a "cart" and there was no "checkout" or I definitely would have noticed the charge). The reason I chose not to go with this company after 3 of their walkers and their business manager all came to my house for the meet and greet was a) their rates as quoted were too expensive for my budget and b) none of the 4 of them were "authorized" to discuss or confirm the rates in person, which just seemed strange to me. I am a low-income single mother who wants the best for her dog, so it only added insult to injury when, 6 weeks later, I politely responded to an inquiry from Muddy Paws about when I would want to schedule my first walk with "I have chosen to go with other walkers" and then immediately receipted an emailed confirmation in my inbox with a $25 charge to my credit card that they had on file. Assuming there had been a mistake, I reached out to the company only to be told that was their practice - to charge for the meet and greet - when you decide not to use their services. I then spoke by phone to the business manager to explain my situation and that I was not aware of that policy. I asked to have the owner Jena give me a call back to discuss the situation. I never heard back from her. I also reached out to Jena over email to explain my situation and ask her to refund my $25. No response. I honestly feel like I dodged a bullet by not engaging this company! Particularly as I've read the defensive and passive aggressive responses on here by Jena to anyone who has anything negative to say about her company (though her walkers all sounds great)...I'm inclined to also call the better business bureau and the AG's office to file a complaint under 93A for unfair and deceptive trade practices so no other future customer will be charged similarly in this way. It's just not the way to treat prospective customers. read more

Not satisfied at all with the service. They take more dogs that they can handle and keep on the leash the ones that give them more leg work. I'm sure they will reply that it's a safety issue. read more
