As I laid my father to rest yesterday, I decided on the way home to visit a unique dining experience that he and my mother used to enjoy greatly. Mug-n-bun is definitely a place you go for the nostalgic vibe of being a restaurant that continues to offer the "drive-in" experience - think 1950's when you could pull in, order, and the server (usually a waitress back then and everyone I saw last evening was also female) would come to your car. I believe Mug-n-Bun has actually been around for over 60 years. In this case, you have 3 options - traditional dine-in, drive-up (pull up in your car, park, turn your lights on to indicate a desire for service), and eating at one of quite a few picnic tables outside. The food leans toward a fast food vibe with a nostalgic flair. They do have some healthier options, though it seemed like most of the menu emphasized fried foods. Interestingly, I didn't quite know the procedure when I arrived here - my lights were already on so a server came to my window. I decided to stick with that and ate in my car. Both servers I met were friendly and helpful. Rather hilariously, I had a hard time getting my window to stay halfway up for the food tray. I ordered a double book and fries. I don't do fries too much these days, however, I opted to go for the experience. They were crinkle-cut. The burger was unique - there was a piece of bread between the two patties (similar to a Big Mac, though more old school).I ordered a large unsweetened iced tea - at that size, you get an actual Mug-n-Bun plastic cup that's pretty cool. The food? Definitely average. I enjoyed the fries most of all. The burger was a bit undercooked for my taste and I wasn't completely fond of the bread in the middle. I doubt I would order the burger again. The iced tea was awesome. Service was efficient. You do have to turn your lights on if you need anything else and when you're ready to have the tray removed. Basics - I don't believe they do free refills, though I'm not 100% sure. It looked like most items were a la carte. They don't put server tips on credit cards (they will use Venmo, Paypal, etc.). I did notice last night that the inside dining was closed - so there appears to be some variation there. Overall, this was a fun experience. It wasn't one I'll race back to, however, as I was letting go of my father it was a nice way to remember him and have a unique dining experience. So impressed with the wide ranging menu and daily specials of 'Tenderloin Tuesday', 'Weiner Wednesday' and 'today's Meatloaf sandwich' at Buy one, get one 50% off. Onion ring orders are HUGE and not greasy. Jalapeño poppers are quite satisfying and the unusual Pizza Burger astounds. House made Root Beer is the star of the show. I love nostalgic eateries. This was our first visit in the past 6 years as we heard rumors it had been sold and closed. Obviously not true. From nostalgia's standpoint, Mug N Bun is superb, although a bit dingy. Some soap, water and a little 'touch up' paint on the doors would help. The 'car hops' work for TIPS ONLY. They did a good job and I compensated her accordingly, in cash. YOU CANNOT PUT A TIP ON YOUR CARD. Although they accept payment by card, tips are cash only. And as it's the only way waitresses earn, you are almost obligated to be overly generous. The food has certainly declined since the last ownership. We had the foot long coney and onion rings with root beer. I didn't know anyone could extrude a wiener to make it that slim. It was really skinny! The onion rings were down right greasy. I mean liquid, oily, all over your hands greasy. They are real onions, which is good, but are real greasy which is real bad. The root beer.... this used to be the star of the MNB show. No more. It was ALWAYS served in a glass mug. No more. It was truly disappointing. You can do better buying a bottled A&W at your local Kroger. Truly heartbreaking. Mug n Bun is a Westside staple after 50 years and loved by many with a steady following. Unfortunately, it is currently for sale and some uncertainty for the future for us who visit often. Our go-to's are the chili dogs and family size French fries. My son loves the breaded tenderloin with everything on it. The milk shakes are good, and I order the peanut butter. The shrimp, chicken, and catfish dinners are very popular. The Italian Sausage and Polish Sausage are decent, and the Sirloin Steak Hoagie is hit and miss. Sometimes it is very tender and next time tough. There is outdoor seating on the deck with indoor seating at the Mug n Bun house next to the parking lot. They are open year round. Mug n Bun Pizza is located at the back of the parking lot. Pizzas are CARRY OUT ONLY. They are very popular with patrons. Pizzas are obviously offered as well as subs, fried chicken, pork chops dinners, and chicken dinners along with family dinners. Family dinners include potatoes, slaw, and rolls. After 54 years, they must be doing something right! Whether you carry out, sit in your car to eat, sit on the deck, or go indoors, it will trigger those nostalgia days of car hops and drive-ins. It is the sit down version of the drive thru next door I think they actually take your order and walk it across the parking lot to this building I was there at lunchtime and I had a fish and chips. The hamburger was on bun, but a slice a white bread was placed on top of the bottom bun. I thought it was weird and too much bread. The fries were good but overly seasoned. Chocolate milk was delicious. We decided to eat there because the weather was so nice. Our server was semi attentive, but it became busy, so I can understand a bit. Friends invited us here and we had never even heard of the place, but it appears to be a West Side, Indianapolis staple. It is pretty close to the Indianapolis Speedway so I think if you frequent the area you know of this spot. They have the old school drive up and order from your car theme going on but also they have an outside seating area where you can hang out as well. They have a few that are covered and some that aren't. There is plenty of parking as well. The service wasn't the best, however not totally shocking considering it is really a dive bar. There were just 2 people working and they were pretty swamped but what I liked is that they were really trying. Like they would run over to a table and let them know they would be right with them. Some places they just move slow like they have no urgency but this place they really did. They were doing the best they could do. They have a HUGE menu with lots of random things but I think their claim to fame is root beer so you gotta order that at least once. They do have diet too. I had a veggie burger which was pretty good. Others at the table had the chili dog which looked amazing, hamburgers, fish and fries. If you haven't stopped by ever to try this iconic spot it is a must try at least once! We had friends in from out of town and in fact from another country and kept telling them about root beer. To give them a proper experience we went to Mug n Bun and ordered some root beer to go. The atmosphere is pure historic diner and drive up and the menu reflects a lot of typical diner food. We love their fries but this time only got the fresh root beer that they make themselves. Delicious! It pairs well with their food as well as anything summery (and pizza as it turns out). My mom is a diner fan and has never been here, so we went today during the final full day of my month long visit to Indy. I had the Mug-N-Bun Special which is a burger with bacon and cheese on toast. She had a single burger. We also had WAY too many crinkle cut fries, nibblers (baby fried onion rings and their onion rings are the BEST), and cheese sticks because I love fried cheese in all forms. And of course - two root beers. They make their own and it is the best, creamiest root beer I've ever had. You can dine at a picnic table, the dining room (week days only) or pull your car up for carside service! Just turn your car lights on . Deliciously unhealthy lunch at one of my favorite places. I've been to mug n bun multiple times on many different occasions. I've ordered different things and the food is subpar. It all tastes like old grease. Every single time I go, the total never matches up with what the total should be according to their own menu, even with taxes added, they add additional charges for literally nothing. They don't provide receipts of what they are charging you. they make their prices up as they go, and it is never consistent. I would steer clear of this place. What a coincidence! I already had this place on my "To Try" list based on another Yelper's review. I was traveling across town from Avon to the Warren Park area using the Tenth St corridor at lunchtime wondering where I was going to eat lunch. As I started thinking about Slapfish's menu, I passed right by Mug n Bun! I LOVE root beer so I had to turn around and check theirs out. The root beer is homemade says their signage and comes straight from the keg according to the server. I guess I've drank Barq's for too long to appreciate the specialness of homemade but regardless I drank it all from their big yellow cup and found it quite satisfying. I decided to try their catfish sandwich with some fries. Good fish sandwiches are rare in landlocked cities. Great fish sandwiches are even more rare. You can order it however you desire. I elected for lettuce and ketchup only. No tartar and no cheese if you know what I mean. It was great! And of course the fries were crinkle style. Just what you would expect from Indy's oldest drive-in of 60 plus years. There are menus on the table and there is a bell to ring when you are ready to order. I definitely wanted a tenderloin so I went with the grilled option with ketchup, pickle, and onions. They didn't skimp on the toppings which I love and accompanied that with seasoned fries. They were crinkle cut were a large portion that arrived hot and fresh. The seasoning was good but only on the top half of the fries. I enjoyed my meal. My friend ordered the breaded tenderloin and the fried cheese balls. It looked good(tenderloin was more of a fritter). Our Sunday afternoon experience was rather short and sweet and so will be this review. Believe it or not, this was my first visit to the Mug n Bun. I've had it bookmarked since I first moved to Indy in 2010 and apparently COVID and rolling through Speedway were just the push I needed...I should add that I was also craving onion rings for some odd reason. Diners can easily pull in their car and turn their lights on to show that they're ready to order. Our friendly waitress quickly came over and took our simple order and returned around ten minutes later with onion rings. Overall, a straightforward greasy spoon/nostalgic drive in experience. The only part that turned us off a bit was the low public health score rating. It didn't stop us but it did give us pause. The crinkle and sweet potato fries, and onion rings were on point. And the fried Catfish sandwich was surprisingly fresh and juicy for a menu more heavily leaning towards beef. My Dad declared the Pork sandwich "good, but not like I remember" and mentioned a lack of juiciness. A Double Cheeseburger had a random slice of plain white bread splitting the patties and cheese - I thought it would be a flavored Texas Toast based on the Yelp pic. But nope - just random bread which was quickly discarded. Unfortunately, the commentary was "it takes me back to my high school cafeteria." Def not a winner there. And also, unfortunately, my Chuckwagon sandwich was pretty tasteless and had a texture that made me question if it was actually beef. Ending on a high note, the two shakes were on point, creamy and rich. As this was my first time, I'll chalk it up to maybe ordering the wrong combination of items. I had heard great things about this place, particularly from folks who had grown up eating here and it must be nostalgic for them. I took the family one afternoon and was excited to see what the hype was about. One the menus posted on the building, there's no pricing, but a waitress came out and gave us a paper copy with prices. When ready to order, you turn your headlights on. We got a variety of items and the kids got kids meals because the waitress said the sandwiches were the same size. The drinks came first and the sizes are SMALL. The "giant" soda is the size of a medium anywhere else. The kids drink is about to slurps. Refills are not free - kids refills are $.40 and giant refills are $.80. My chocolate PB malt was really bland - it tasted like a plain vanilla shake. They also have Pepsi products and are known for their root beer, which I hear is amazing, if you're into root beer. It wasn't very busy so our food came out quickly after. I was not impressed with anything. A little bit of seasoning would have gone a LONG way. The burger had a moist bun which was a bit soggy (if you want toppings, like tomato, they are $.60+). The seasoned fries were pretty good but only about 1/3 of the fries had the seasoning and the rest didn't even have salt. I was happy to see him they had corn nuggets but again, little to no flavor. The double cheeseburger my husband got had a slice of bread in the middle, which I had never seen before. Pricing is good so you can sample a variety of items and not break the bank.
