I was having a lovely morning trying a new breakfast spot at Friends Diner. Breakfast was good and reasonably priced. Service was great. I was excited that we had a new breakfast place to add to our rotation. Hubby ordered the protein breakfast while I opted for the yogurt and granola bowl. My granola lol left much to be desired. It was like a strawberry yo with some toasted oatmeal on top and a couple berries. It came with a piece of toast, but it was still pretty expensive for over eight dollars for the quality of food I received. Hubby's entrée consisted of bacon and sausage, eggs and toast. It was all normal diner food. Nothing great, but nothing was gross. We will not be returning to this restaurant though. About 10 minutes into our experience, someone came in with a non service dog and was sat right next to us. As a rule of cleanliness, I don't eat in spaces where any untrained animals are allowed. read more

In short, we found another good breakfast spot. Our favorite item on the menu was the red potatoes, which were basically just big home fries. The blueberry pancakes were also really good, and had a little extra flavor that we couldn't quite place (vanilla? Maybe?) The biscuits and eggs left a bit to be desired, though they didn't take much away from the experience. The food was delicious with a wide variety to choose from. Our waitress was very friendly and even gave us a coupon that someone from another table had and couldn't use. The setting is nice but the tables are a little narrow and you hit the knees of the person in front of you. Would still definitely recommend this place as great stop. read more

Overall, it was ok. The staff were friendly, the restaurant was clean, and they have a huge menu with lots of options to choose from. There seemed to be a few groups of regular customers when we were there. It was a healthy mix of older people and UIndy students when we were there. My mom and brother enjoyed their food, but I thought my food was just ok. The veggie omelet was like 75% onions. I do like onions but it was too much for me. And it was an unfair advantage since I had just had a veggie omelet the day before at another restaurant that was a bunch of super fresh veggies. My favorite thing was actually the butter on the pancake...it was whipped with vanilla or cream cheese or something. It tasted more like cheesecake than butter. My beautiful wife & I have driven past Friend's Diner for weeks saying we need to try it. So last night we did. The interior was clean , well lighted & spacious. We went for an early dinner ( just before 6) & it was fairly slow. We were greeted & seated almost immediately. Our friendly waitress ( we had great service!) not only took our order but asked if we wanted some biscuits & apple butter. Since we are both sane ( although the jury is still out out on me) we said yes. They brought out 2 complimentary biscuits with a small container of apple butter. We both thought that was a tasty way to start. Breakfast is served all day here and lunch/dinner items after 10. We both decided on dinner items. My awesome wife got the Friends special meatloaf which came with 3 sides. She chose mashed potatoes, Mac & cheese & onion rings. She found the meatloaf covered in gravy decent & made there. The mashed potatoes we ok but bland. The Mac & cheese & onion rings were both brought in from the outside & were bland & just so so. I got the breaded tenderloin sandwich with just mustard on it ( which came in a small container) and for my one side I got the Mac & cheese. I found the Mac & cheese so bland as to be tasteless. The tenderloin though was another story. The bun was toasted. The tenderloin was pounded quite thin & breaded very nicely. It had a good taste & wasn't chewy at all. I'd recommend it! Overall it was a decent experience. The service was very good but we were disappointed in the quality of the sides. When you hear diner I tend to think items done from scratch. I found it interesting that the biscuits & entrees were but not the sides. It was okay but nothing spectacular. Pro tip. If you pay in cash you get a 4% discount due to credit card fees. read more

My wife and I picked Friends Diner for lunch today. It was our first visit to this establishment. I would call this a neighborhood restaurant. The menu is large and fairly diverse. I had a tenderloin sandwich with fried mushrooms and my wife had a breaded tenderloin (without the bun) , mashed potatoes and ocra. She gave the potatoes an A+. We thought the good rated a solid 4 on a 5 point scale. The service was very good . We never waited on a drink refill and didn't have to ask for them. As for ambiance, they tried hard to get the place cozy and they succeeded. It's not plush but it's friendly (fits doesn't it). The cost for two meals was about average ($32). The person I went with and I both got the tenderloin lunch special. It was 9.99 for a grilled or fried tenderloin (no bun) and two sides. We both ordered the fried tenderloin. I can confidently say this was the very best tenderloin I have ever eaten. Seriously, EVER. Having lived in Indiana close to fifty years, I have had my share of tenderloins from mom and pop establishments, so that is a great compliment. If a piece of pork pounded thin to the size of a hubcap is your idea of a good tenderloin, this is NOT the one. If you want a well-seasoned piece of pork tenderloin breaded in a flour and cornmeal coating and then fried to absolute perfection, here you will find it. Found this little 'hole in the wall' diner in a strip center just off Madison Ave for breakfast. Good service as we entered just after a party of 10 was seated. The server let us know that she would be taking those orders and be right back to us...AFTER she delivered very good coffee to us. I was impressed how quickly she got back to us and how quickly the food came out. Kudos to the process & the efficiency of the kitchen. I had the sampler platter with 2 over easy eggs, a piece of ham, bacon strip and sausage patty, crisp (as ordered) hash browns and a small order of biscuits & gravy. Everything was excellently prepared. Biscuits were flaky with a great mouth feel. My only complaint is the too small bowl of gravy...really not enough for even one biscuit. That said, large well prepared portions. My friend had the chicken fried steak with eggs, toast & hashbrowns. The steak was a frozen patty deep fried & over cooked to an unappetizing crispness. Ambiance was a bit stark (McDonalds-like) and it was chilly. All in all, I'll be happy to return. Lots of appetizing menu options. read more

we eat there often and tonight was horrible. The waitress got the order all wrong , never asked if we needed refills or if we needed anything. She never brought us our bill- if she had- we would have noticed we got billed for something we never received. It will probably be awhile before we return. I feel like I'm in the twilight zone. We read some reviews and thought we'd give this place a try. The servers were fine, I couldn't give them more stars because if you see someone pushing their food around on a plate the whole time they're there and then not taking it to go- you think you'd get the hint. My husband got liver and onions and it was what it was, but they forgot part of his meal and then tried to charge us for two orders of it! I ordered the stroganoff- the menu stated it came over noodles with grilled mushrooms. They were canned mushrooms, not even mixed in with gravy and served over mashed potatoes! That doesn't even make sense to put a pasta dish over mashed potatoes! All of the food was gray and brown, nothing was fresh and it didn't feel like of any nutritional value. Everything's GFS processed and pre-made; reheating processed food is not cooking. We will definitely never go back! read more

Please be mindful when using a credit card at this location! A friend used her card, payment was taken but then placed back into her account. When this happened she went to the restaurant and explained the money was sent back to her bank and was told by staff that everything looked fine and to look at it as she ate a free meal! 1 month later the pulled the money out of her account. This wasn't a banking issue/error but an error on the restaurant's end but instead they told her sorry it's not our issue but your problem and that every transaction made in the last month was issued back to cardholders and reran 1 month later! The scramble eggs are not scrambled at all, just mixed up cooked on each side so it was 1 solid piece. Hashbrowns were ok but cheese was burnt on each side. The cups were all chipped and broke on the edges and really faded like they bought them used. Staff not very professional but nice. The menu was way to big.
