We didn't have reservations but I had emailed them the week ahead. On on Thursday I got an email response saying if the party cancels I will be put on a wait list. Then I didn't hear back but I asked again for the following Saturday night, they confirmed. We definitely had to be there within 15 mins of the confirmation and needed to respond with 5 mins for the email. Everything was food. My friends thought the pasta ans steak were a bit too salty. We had 5 ppl and couldn't finished from the large portion. I didn't take any pictures of the drinks but not big on whiskey and they still made whiskey drinks based off what flavors each of us liked (sweet, Gingerly, citrus) good luck! Having no reservation myself, I had to "waste" literally 4 hours until the reservation time but it was perfectly fine because there is somuch to do in Portland's DT that it was time well spent. MWL is a speakeasy style Whiskey bar, plus it serves delicious finger food. I ordered the beet salad and it was very tasty.....And the wiskeys, oh Lord..... You would be just amazed just looking at alll the bottles and how the bartenders can locate these bottles in less than 10 seconds. Multnomah Whiskey Library IS Harry Potter for grown ups. Whew!!! There. I said it. Please understand that 1) I love the world JK Rowling created, and 2) I love bourbon. Here is the thing. Just as the world of Harry Potter has become this enormous cultural touchstone (engendering many interpretations of the world), so too have places with long membership waiting lists engendered many to eschew or discount inclusion. In this case, I am lucky that my brother-in-law is a member. This means I get express access to this little jewel in downtown Portland. From the moment one nearly misses the tucked away door with the discreet gilded lettering, something feels rewarding about finding MWL. It is not unlike Hagrid touching those bricks in a specific sequence which unfurls a glorious surprise on the other side. The first visit over a year ago, I swear to you - they had hired personnel from the Beauxbaton Academy as greeters. All the bartenders carry the calm and inviting demeanor of persons steeped in the domain of their expertise, not dissimilar to the scholarly-robed professors at Hogwarts. Selecting your beverages from the veritable encyclopedic tome feels akin to Mr. Olivander gently instructing that the wand chooses the wizard. I've never had a poor bite of food nor an unsatisfactory drink at this establishment. Ascending the claustrophobic stairs to the member's area concentrates the senses. Burgeoning expectation enlightens the imagination of what might lie beyond. When the dark wood door opens, one could imagine entering the relaxing and collegial den of House Gryffindor. Small enclaves dotted around the room provide seating for pairs and comfortable couch ensembles provide arrangements for larger groups. The vaulted ceiling with back lit stained glass could easily be forgiven for some clever House elf magic. The cavernous library-style shelves that wrap around the entire left side of the room showcase every manner of clever decoction, spirit, or essence. To embrace the sense of whimsey present within the Multnomah Whiskey Library is to concede that there is something magical to be found in new discoveries. Indeed, I let my Patronus loose within this protected enclave, free to explore centuries of human cleverness (along with a helpful safety charm brought to you by way of an Uber ride home). The Multnomah Whiskey Library is the Mecca, the Mothership, the Graceland of Whiskies. My wife and I were visiting my sister and Brother-in-law in Portland, OR back in July 2017. We were visiting different beer tap rooms throughout downtown when we came across the Whiskey Library. My eyes lit up and I asked the group, "Can we please go in?" To my surprise, we were able to get In right away with no issue or wait (apparently my Sister told people after the fact that we went and they said it's difficult to get in as membership is needed to enter without their hall pass that they offer) Once seated, it was difficult not to be blown away by their absolutely insane selection of Whiskeys, Bourbons, Scotch, Ryes, etc that they have available. Being the only one in our party that had a love for this whiskey experience, I went to town and enjoyed a flight of various Whiskeys that our bar keep helped me select. He was very patient in helping me choose 4 Whiskeys that would compliment my palate and not break the bank. Five giddy stars, because I've got a hellofa crush going on here. About a week ago I took advantage of a cocktail class to introduce myself to the place and see if it would be a good place to hang out. Noon on a Saturday, why not! I made some new friends, learned how to shake like a pro, and yes okay was pretty tipsy walking out of there. Lucky for me and the other motorists Shalom Y'all is right next door. A little food, Turkish coffee, and two hours and I was street legal. Couple nights ago I made a reservation upstairs and met a friend for drinks and dinner. We sat at the bar, watched our guy mix drinks, got treated like VIPs, and had a wonderful time. The old fashioned that Jackson made was outstanding. We also tried a Welsh single malt, and a new one for me that Jackson suggested. The risotto was spot on and the sea scallops soft perfection cooked just right. I thought I was going to visit the place nearby that sells s'mores for desert, but there was a tart on the menu I couldn't resist. I will be here again and again. I had never been here before but I knew it would take awhile to get in from the wait list once we put our names in. So we purposely planned to put our names in then go get dinner. Our timing worked perfectly! By the time we got our check for dinner we got in to the library (about 1.5 hr wait). The whole place was a different experience than I've ever had before. It was so fun to see all the whiskeys and learn more about the rare whiskeys they have in house. There were only bartenders in the room, if you order food the kitchen turns a light on and they come grab it from a window in the wall. It definitely make it feel very intentionally focused on the whiskey rather than a restaurant feel. We had a great time here and will be back! Update: we returned! So professional and well tailored staff!! Our 2 hour wait was luckily only a 40 min wait, which went by fast thanks to the green room. We were lead up some stairs and then entered, the Whiskey Library. I am not a whiskey fanatic, but my boyfriend is. I thought it was amazing, and he thought he died and went to heaven. They have a bar, and several tables with family style seating ( on deep cushion chairs) seating 4- 8 people at a time. We were seated at a coffee table across from another couple. I thought it would be awkward but it surprisingly wasn't. Just minded our business. The display of whiskey behind the bar was absolutely beautiful. And maturity since the taste of whiskey is an acquired taste, as I've gotten older and truly value the taste of fine whiskey instead of taking Jameson shots at a club. Lol! For a party of 4, we waited 2 hours. Yes 2 hours but they have the lower bar aka for the peasants. Us peasants sat for 2 hours and finally was high class enough to get a seat in the library. It was completely emptied. I think they make you wait so they appear busy bc there were tons of people waiting and many emptied seats. Maybe saving for members? What a hidden gem... we were staying at a hotel around the corner and after a meeting we randomly stumbled across this spot. Meh. That's what I thought about this place. We came here on New Years Eve right when it opened. We even waited outside (in the rain) for opening time. When we got in, they casually told us only the Green Room was open. This is like the waiting room for the place everyone is so jazzed about. It's a room, painted green, with tables. Basically just a regular old bar. Apparently they had a special event and there was no access to the actual library part. Since we were visiting from out of town, I'm a crazy planner, and everyone said this place was "so cool," I'd reviewed their website quite a few times and saw NOWHERE on the site that the library area would be closed. It was 4pm for god's sake! 8 hours till midnight. Clearly we weren't the only people surprised by this news. Many people came in and walked right out. Our server was underwhelming. Maybe she could tell we were disappointed or maybe she was annoyed to be working on NYE. Either way, she wasn't great or friendly. I got the sense she didn't think we were whiskey connoisseurs, which I'm not. But my boyfriend likes whiskey a lot and I'm pretty sure that all money spends the same whether it's a whiskey expert's money or just a person trying out a place everyone raves about. My drink was fine. But it was absolutely nothing special. My boyfriend tried two whiskeys and liked them, but I'm pretty sure he could've found something similar somewhere else. I love whiskey, but hate waiting, so I almost skipped this. I mean, we have some great whiskey bars in San Diego, so what makes this place special? Well, it's the experience of the library. The long wait is because they don't fill the room, rather patrons are scattered throughout like you would find in a library. The whiskey librarians are super knowledgeable about their 1000+ whiskey collection, will spend a lot of time indulging in all your whiskey questions, and can recommend something that is right for you. And the wait isn't bad. They will take your phone number and call you when your turn is coming up. Or you can hang out in their bar downstairs, The Green Room. I'm not a whiskey drinker, but this was a pretty cool experience none the less. First of all the line is ridiculously long. We had to wait over 2 hours to get into the library. Once you're in though, you're seated at a table where a bartender comes. They're super knowledgeable of all the whiskey, and will ask you about what types of whiskey or drinks do you usually prefer. From there they will bring over a little bar cart and make your drink based on what you told your bartender. What a lovely spot that truly is a unique experience. From waiting in the "Green Room" bar to leaving, coming here was a great time and will remain very memorable for our group. My only wish is that the 2 waiters we had were just a bit more helpful. Our main waiter asked for what we usually like in order to help us pick form the huge selection, but he was not super useful... After mentioning some things we liked he usually didn't have much to say so it was just shooting in the dark. BUT when he did make recommendations they were great! Finally! After trying to get in last year and being told it would be a 3 to 4 hour wait, my SO and I decided to go when they opened. I mean it's 5 o'clock somewhere, right? Allie would be our bartender who would come by with a cart(!), mix our drinks and make suggestions for cocktails or drams. My SO is more of a whiskey/bourbon aficionado than I am and Allie was super knowledgeable of not only whiskey, but cognac as well. She made plenty of suggestions for both of us that we enjoyed tremendously. Since we were going to watch the Warriors play the Trailblazers, we didn't really partake in many bites except for the fries. The serving size was a little disappointing for the price, but we came for the drinks anyways. Also to be noted, there is a two hour time limit to enjoy your libations and food in the library. I started off with an Old Fashioned which is what they are known for and asked for cherry to be added as well. Next was the Lo & Behold that got better with each sip. It felt so special, having a friend asking a Portland insider where to go. They special feeling of being downstairs at the small bar, waiting to be lucky enough to go up to the big room. It even felt exciting as we entered and saw all the bottles lining the walls, and the huge book handed to us to select something from this huge library to drink after we were seated (I thought rather oddly) at this plush leather couch. Very impressive Whiskey Collection. I would love to return to try some more. I came on Saturday around 4:30pm to get a table for dinner, but the earliest available for our party of 6 was 10pm. I asked if it were possible to make a 6PM reservation for the following day, but they were not open on Sunday or Monday (during Labor Day Weekend). We decided to take the 10pm reservation. We ate dinner nearby and our table was available by 9:10pm. We had a little trouble finding the entrance. It is located upstairs from The Green Room. We enjoyed several different whiskeys. Our server, Jared, was very attentive and informative. He gave us great recommendations and we were very pleased with the drinks. We ordered the popcorn and chocolate cake dessert to snack on while we drank. The popcorn was not that impressive, but the cake was super delicious! The prices are what you would expect - not cheap, but not unfair. I tried the Second Marriage cocktail (my wife was not impressed with the name LOL). It was good, but I wish I stuck to the single malts neat. There were so many options I didn't get to try. I would love to return to explore more shelves in the library. As I sit and reflect on great memories I would have to say this place definitely made it on that list. The lovely Mair told me I had to stop here since I was in the area and I am glad I did! We got there right at opening and I let the gentleman at the door know we had not been there before and wanted to see it all! We were taken upstairs.....oh man that place is freaking awesome! Huge wall of drink is so cool, they have to use a ladder to reach some of them. We had a big lunch but couldn't skip the cheese plate you know your girl... I stuck with my old fashion and I was not disappointed. We also had a whiskey flight taster, so much fun! I hope I can find the pictures so I can share my fun with you kids but you should seriously experience it for yourself. If you can get there early that place gets packed quick! FYI: they don't take reservations unless you're a member or if you pay an additional fee to obtain a hall pass. After reading the reviews, we arrived when they opened and immediately got a table. Once our hostess led us into the library, it's like I had entered another world. Along the wall is shelves of whiskey with servers needing to use ladders to retrieve alcohol. I was completely amazed, needing a few minutes to take it all in. After being seated, our friendly server greeted us and explained to us about the whiskey/alcohol selections. Thinking that the best way to open up my palate was to try a mixed drink. I ordered and loved their old fashioned ! What made this drink memorable, was that your server makes it for you at your table. Excited and ready to try whiskey, I dived into their whisky bible to make my selections. Jameson and Yamasaki were my two favorites that I ordered & enjoyed. Despite their delish food menu, we chose to snack on their cheese platter. Perfect pairing for our whiskey. Truly a memorable and worthwhile visit. You definitely will not be disappointed! This is prb one of the coolest whiskey bars I mean Libraries I have been too. It deff is the best Library I have been too thats for sure! The layout, decor, and service is top notch. My friend and I were not members, but we came around 4 and they had a table for us for about an hour. I wish we could have stayed longer! We both had flights that were handpicked by one of the many talented servers! They have thousands of whiskey its imtimidating. I will say the prices are deff a lil elevated, you can get some of the same pours at other bars for cheaper but i guess your paying for the service! We did not have any food. Whiskey library membership is an interesting concept, one that should be in Chicago!! Overall great experience! Amazing service! Our server was super awesome, friendly, and knowledgeable! She made me the BEST old fashion ever (the husband gotta step it up). This place is pretty spacious and has TONS of whiskey and bourbon options for thirsty self. You can go in with a mission and your heart set on a drink but once you see your selection here, you will change your mind! This place was really incredible! Thanks for setting the bar high on old fashions and for giving us friendly service! Highly recommended. Oh yea! And you MUST get the cheesecake! It's to die for! It had lemon, pistachio and goat cheese! So soooooo good!! Trust!! PS: the wait is FOREVER!! Be patient.. it's worth it. read more

New member. Great staff, comfy old leather,soft light that reminds me of my grandfather smoking a pipe in winter Vermont. Oh wait. I forgot I'm an Korean immigrant. But you get the feel. Food is good (though a bit pricey) with more scotch than the eye can see. Remember Dorthy running thru the poppy field in Wizard of Oz? It's that except the witch is chanting "whiskey... whiskey.. whiskey..". The nap after is the same though. read more

This review is specifically for the upstairs library. Our group had been planning this for awhile and had made reservations about 6 months before hand. Also with 5 of us we were able to secure the private back room, but that came with a $1000 minimum purchase. Trust me, all of this was worth it! We had reservations for 6pm and arrive early at 5:15pm. We sat in the green room, which is available to all based on room. We only waited a few min to get seats. We had a few basic drinks, but trust me we were saving for the big show. I know that the Library has a membership, so I don't want to share everything that we experienced. Needless to say it was an amazing experience. I can tell you that you get your own personal bar tender that comes to your table/area. I can also tell you that there is a strict time limit. We were able to get a bit more due to our group size, but from what I understand the normal reservation is for just 2hrs. The list of scotch and whiskey was incredible. If you like scotch and whiskey this is a must visit! We were able to also have dinner which was an amazing, we had a short rib that just fell off the bone. Needless to say this was by far a five star experience. If you can save up and make the reservation, I highly encourage it. read more

Oh, Multnomah Whisky Library, I had such high expectations for you. Perhaps if I'd have had none, this would have been an awesome surprise, but my friend told me she got the greatest old fashioned in her life here, made with a cinnamon infused whisky, but when I inquired about it, Ian the bartender looked at me like I was asking for a Shirley temple made with absinthe. It doesn't exist anymore, apparently. BEFORE ALL THAT: the downstairs hostess told my friend and me it'd be a 1-2 hour wait (it was 7:30-ish). We took a chance, not knowing what she meant by "the green room" downstairs, and put our name on the list. They called us after a half hour, thank the heavens, and we were led upstairs into a decidedly cool ambiance, speakeasy libations meets beauty and the beast library, with couches. We were seated at a couch corner and served by one nice but humorless waiter, along with Ian the bartender. He wheeled a bar over to us, which was exciting, in order to mix and stir. After copious questions about the level of smokiness in the mezcal used in their s'mores-like drink, I ordered it. (I don't like the taste of actual tequila, but I do like mezcal if it doesn't taste like tequila). But of course, after giving me non-helpful answers on recommendations ("Only you know what you want to order"), I ordered the mezcal drink, and of course ALL I could taste was tequila. They kindly replaced my drink with what my friend had (Bourbon Renewal, I believe, off menu for $11. It was very good.) We also ordered the chocolate whiskey cake which was appropriately small and sweet, though I ended up having a better version at The Picnic House. All that to say, the reason I wasn't super impressed with this place was the staff's bland personality and the "meh" quality of their drinks. I'm sure folks drinking whisky neat will enjoy the 1800 bottles to choose from, but the cocktails are nothing to write home about. The bartenders seem to know that, too, and therefore care more about the big dogs than about my friend and me. We saw Ian laughing with a nearby table - yes, LAUGHING - yet he maintained stone-faced composure at our attempts to be conversational and complimentary. (This was, fyi, before I asked for a different drink.) Therefore, I consider this spot a one-and-done kind of locale. read more
