The team at MM at extremely knowledgeable about older BMWs and provided me with a high quality inspection and repair to my 1989 BMW earlier this year. My cherished BMW had to visit the body shop last year after an accident. When the car left the body shop, I needed to have a few remaining items checked and repaired. This is where Munich came in. I found Munich Motors on Yelp searching for 'vintage bmw repair'. The person who answered the phone was patient with my numerous questions, scheduled my appointment, and within a couple of days I had my car back. The pricing was in line with my expectations for a specialty shop and I felt a good value for the quality of work and attention I received. Munich provided me with comprehensive feedback on items my E30 needed to get back on the road as well as some tips on upcoming future repairs. Brought my 1973 BMW 2002 in to Munich Motorworks a few times. First time was for a consult on the doors. Second time was due to car not getting out of 1st gear without stalling; had to tow it that time. Had them take care of a minor engine wiring issue causing stalling. Then they got my passenger door to a temporary functional level while they tracked down parts to complete a full repair. Passenger side door was rusted shut, frozen, they got it opened. I brought it in a third time they fixed and/or replaced the window regulators that were problematic as well as the window gaskets. They repaired, replaced, and removed the rust on the door and door latch mechanism for my passenger side door. They did other work like installing door check straps. Their pricing is absolutely beyond reasonable for work on a classic car. They did excellent work and Darby kept me informed on the progress (mainly waiting on parts from suppliers). I'll be going back to Munich Motorworks for any future issues, which I'm sure will arise with a 49 year old car. I can't recommend them enough. Ask for Darby or Joseph. Joseph was great in offering advice and insight on helping me determine next steps in my classic car's restoration process. Really amazing crew working at Munich Motorworks. read more

Lots of positive reviews here. Wish I had had the same experience. Wish they didn't break part of my car, send me off without acknowledging it, and except no responsibility when I brought it back to them to be fixed. Especially after spending $3500 at their shop in the two weeks prior. The heartbreak of it all (for me) is that my car is a classic... 32 years old with only 100,000 miles on it, in very good shape. They broke the adorable --and original-- analog clock in the dashboard. (Poor sweetie lasted 32 years on the street, but not even a few days under the care of Munich Motorworks.) Insult to injury, wanting to charge for the fix, after not even telling me. No apology or even acknowledgement. In my opinion, this shows a lack of integrity and attention to detail. I will not be returning or recommending Munich Motorworks. I love my car too much. Consider yourself warned. read more

I just bought a used Jetta with a check engine light on. I knew what the code was and the range of problems that may have been causing it so I bought it hoping that I'd be able to get it fixed. I went to a shop that told me they didn't do enough work on German motors to feel comfortable diagnosing and fixing my car, they recommended me to Munich Motorworks, as soon as I spoke to Darby I had a good feeling. After a day in the shop they found 11 parts that were either missing or needed replacing, after a few more days my car was finished. The light is gone, the car runs smoothly and they came in under their initial quote! I'm very happy I took my car to Munich Motorworks, as long as I drive a german vehicle, I will be coming to these guys for work! read more

Let me start by saying Darby is the man! I had a pre-purchase inspection done here for a 2018 M3 F80 and Darby was able to screen the car for me like a pro. What I like about Darby is he's very honest and looks out the best interest of his customers. I've never met this guy but I felt that he genuinely cared about me and ensure that I didn't purchase a bad car down the line. It's like having a father looking out for his son type of feeling lol. I also learned a lot during the process and gained some insights about the newer M3. Anyway, long story short I didn't end up buying the car because it had too many flaws. He also stopped the inspection halfway through to minimize the cost of the inspection, so I ended not paying for the full inspection to tell me "She's not the one", which is AWESOME. He also sent me other listings which he thought were good cars and gave me examples what to look out for. Super cool and honest mechanic! Darby is YourMechanic enough said! The guys at Munich Motorworks (Scott and Darby) were super helpful in my search for a used BMW. I ended up bringing three cars in for Pre-Purchase Inspections and they gave me a full run down letting me know why the first two were yellow/red flags, explaining what issues would be more pressing matters and what would maybe be not as important, but how much to expect for repairs for any issues. Even gave me advice on how to improve my search. On my third inspection, which ended up being a green flag, they actually waived my fee (said they didn't have much to do since it was in great shape). Could've easily charged me a third time but what a pleasant experience. Glad a bought a BMW just so I can keep working with them! Highly recommend. read more

A couple of years ago, we bought a much used and well loved 2000 Volvo XC from friends who suggested we take it to Munich Motorworks, the only people they had ever let touch the car. We live way on the other side of town, though, so (when it eventually needed some attention) I decided to use a shop nearby; but that mechanic needed to know the car's history, so I called Joseph at Munich Motoworks to see what he could tell me. WOW! I cannot find words to adequately describe how helpful and friendly Joseph was. He really went "above and beyond," diving into his old records to give me a comprehensive list of work his shop had done, listened to all my questions, and offered really helpful advice about how to proceed. If I were anywhere east of the Willamette River--heck, even CLOSE to the Willamette River--he'd be my mechanic, too. You know how you can meet someone and just know, right off, that they're trustworthy, they're knowledgeable, and tey believe in "old-school" customer service? While recently vacationing in Oregon traveling from California, my 2019 X3 BMW unexpectedly had a check engine light come on. Never a good thing while away from home. Munich Motorworks was nearby and we gave them a call and they were very accommodating. Suggested we bring the car by. After some investigation on their part they felt pretty sure it was minor, were able to reset the warning light but suggested taking it to a BMW dealership when it was possible, because it was still under warranty. We made back home with no issue but the check engine came back on. They were spot on with their analysis, it was the mechanical radiator flaps not working properly. They were very kind to look at it and then did not charge us for their time. If I lived in Portland they would definitely have my business. Thanks Darby and crew, you are amazing. read more

Let me tell you a little something about Munich Motorworks and Joseph Gilmore. A few years ago I went looking for my dream 1973 BMW 2002. I found it. A frame off restoration with all the upgrades at Munich Motorworks. I was out of state, but loved the car. The gist of this review, I bought the car for $8k, paid $2k more for extra work to be done, gave Joseph 2 months to do the extra work, flew in with my brother on my dime for a road trip in it, and ALMOST ZERO WORK HAD BEEN DONE, AND THE CAR WAS IN WORSE SHAPE THAN HE SAID, AND HE SAID IN FRONT OF HIS WIFE "IM SORRY, I didn't do any of the work, AND I don't have any money to pay you back the $2k". SO HE SPENT MY MONEY AND DIDNT DO THE WORK. Some of the details - The interior was in disarray, he hadn't even installed the headboard or trim, it was all just wrapped up and thrown in the trunk, there were cracks in the body, the transmission blew within 5k miles (no second or third gear), the head gasket blew in 2k miles, the clutch went to the floor and didn't come back up in under 1k miles... OH, don't let me forget to tell you about titling the car. Joseph said, just get a temporary plate for now and worry about that later. It took MONTHS to get the title, and I had to write a letter to the previous owner saying I was titling his car (Joseph never bothered to put it in his name). This meant that if the prior owner had said, "hey! That's my car!" I would have had to give it back. Here's some of his description - Joseph Gilmore from Munich Motorworks "This car has been my personal restoration project for the last three years and I have invested MANY thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours in it. I started with an original CAlifornia sunroof car I found in Arizona that was a rust free shell and no collision damage to speak of. I wanted to create something unique among 2002s so decided to shave most of the trim and chrome. All of the beltline, door impact mouldings and rear trim pieces were removed and the holes welded (not filled with plastic). The car was painted with base & clear while the car was completely stripped. There was nothing in the interior, no frames in the doors, no glass and the sunroof was removed. The mechanicals were also completely removed including the subframes and the shell was rolling on dollies for the most complete paint job possible. The engine compartment, trunk, rockers, and nose were all painted, as were the complete door shells and hood and deck lids. I did not cut any corners on the paint job, I did all the trim and mechanical work myself and some of the sanding and prep and the paint still cost $6000 at a reputable shop in Phoenix. Then began the slow process of putting it back together. I had been hoarding parts for a long tme and had some nice stuff ready to go in..." My beloved Volvo 240 was having cooling system issues the other day, and I stopped by Munich Motorworks (because they advertise "Volvo service") to see if I could get a good deal on a water pump. I was greeted by the owner of MMW and his awesome dog. The guy seemed pretty nice at first, but when we popped the hood he condescended pretty hard about my Volvo. Spying some gunk on the side of my engine (which has 285,000 miles on it), he said I'd probably need a head gasket. He arrogantly jostled my front end (haven't changed those shocks in maybe ten years), and said I'd need new front shocks, which would be impossible because "your shock mounts are shot." They're absolutely not shot; the rubber is cracked, just like it is on every single other 240 out there. He then said he couldn't guarantee a quote on my water pump, because over the course of this easy, less than two hour job his guys might shear a bolt because my ride was so sketchy. His conclusion was that I'd be better off digging a big hole and burying it. This guy clearly doesn't believe in one of the most solid cars ever built, and he has no experience as an old Volvo mechanic. I've put 5,000 easy miles on my car since I got a new water pump elsewhere, and it runs like a dream. Don't let the sparkly BMWs outside Munich Motorworks lure you in. read more

I arrived to Portland four months ago and needed some work done on my E-320 Benz. I've been to Munich Motorworks twice, and both times have been impressed with the knowledge, honesty, and great service. First time was to replace my passenger side mirror. Joseph gave great advice as to where I could buy a new mirror for a decent price, and he installed it for a very reasonable service fee. Second time I needed to get my AC blower fan fixed. I feared that it was the motor, since replacing it in parts alone was about $800.00. After Joseph's crew diagnosed the issue, they found that a resistor had gone bad for a total parts cost of about $60.00. In addition, they took care of an annoying squeak in my cars suspension. All of the work was done the same day, and for a very reasonable price. I will not go anywhere else and if you have a BMW or Mercedes Benz, Munich Motorworks is the place. read more

I hate to write this review because my relationship with this shop started out so well and I thought I found my new shop to take my Audi. I took my Audi to get an oil change everything went great. My car then started leaking oil while driven, indicating that previous work I had the month prior from another shop was the cause. I took it back to Munich to get their opinion on this leak before I went back to the first shop, and they said "it looks like an issue around the timing chain, we filled your car with oil again until you can make it to the other shop" ok sounds great. Then 3 days later before I could get the Audi back into the first shop, my car started rumbling and driving weird. When my old shop looked at the car after munich filled it with oil, they said Munich had put the completely wrong oil in my car which we knew for certain because it was on the invoice Munich gave me. The invoice said they put wrong weight and type of oil, my car calls for synthetic oil and they put conventional in it at a completely wrong weight for my car oil which was way too thick. When I called Munich a week later to ask why they put the wrong oil in my car they said "because it was cheaper oil just to get the car from point A to point B and we knew it was getting flushed out. We were just trying to save you money" What an odd practice, To put the wrong cheaper oil in my car and not even call to ask me first? Because I would have told them DO NOT DO THAT and plz put the right oil in for the higher price. AND They didn't even tell me they did that when I picked up the car? Unprofessional and just a weird thing to do? I'm just glad it didn't do more damage to my engine thankfully. If I was going to this shop I'd want to know this info before hand that's why I'm posting this. I'm not mad I don't want a refund I just don't want this odd business practice to happen to someone else unknowingly. read more

I brought a car here for pre-purchase inspection, got an excellent education in what to look for and what to be concerned about. Mechanic noted the dealer had cleared the engine codes and in fairness explained that's common for cars that have been sitting long enough to drain their batteries. While he found no clear faults, he remained skeptical of the car's value - and rightly so! 200 miles later the engine faults came up: software & control board issues, possibility of major repair bills in the near future. Would have saved 5 grand if I'd listened the first time. read more

So I'm actually writing this review for my mom who is a senior lady who doesn't really yelp. She recently took her mini cooper into Munich Motorworks and had such a good experience there. Joseph, the owner, was so nice and took the time to really explain what was happening to her vehicle and the potential options she had to deal with the problem-including not spending a huge amount of money (in his shop) to fix it. You know when I was looking for a mechanic for my mom and googling "mini repairshop" Munich Motorworks didn't come up...I live nearby to it, and often drive by, so noticed that they work on Minis and then googled MM and saw the amazing reviews (which are so spot on). I hope this review might somehow help the google algorithm boost MM up in the search, as I really hope others with minis will find Joseph and his team. read more

I had just picked up a Porsche in the fall of 2016. I somehow broke off the bracket for the strut on the hood. I called the shop to see if they had any time to fix it. Simple job to weld the bracket back on. (Probably an hour). The owner Joseph said "I do not think that you can afford my shop".. How in the hell does the owner know what I can or can not afford? What an insult, I just asked him to see he they had any time to do a simple weld job..This is the second time that I had an unsatisfactory experience with this shop. Dude - (Joeseph) has hubris comin out of his arse. I took it to Vasi at Alpina Auto body down near 26th & he spent 2 hours on it & says to me when i went to pick it up, how much cash you got on you today bud? I say only have $30 today Vasi, he say's that good enough buddy.. Vasi charges me $30 for 2 hours of his time & he did fantastic work as always. Take your business to Beaverton Import Auto for mechanic works on your import & Alpina for body work.. read more

My Audi is pretty precious to me, so I don't want to leave it with just anyone. After the two times that it has visited Munich Motorworks, I feel confident that it is has been in capable, honest, hands. It also feels good to find a place that loves German cars as much as I love mine. The first time was after some jerk clipped its side mirror on Hawthorne and drove off into the night. I went to three places, including the dealership, to compare prices, but before MM even named their price I was sold (which is a good thing because the other places were quoting around $1500!!). I drove into the shop and Joseph, the owner, immediately saw to my car and nearly fixed it in 5 minutes. While I was busy playing with his lovable Great Dane, he had salvaged the cracked mirror frame, ordered a spare part, and had it on delivery. When I returned to have it installed, I was blown away! He charged me very little for labor and the charge for the part was a fraction of what the other guys were charging! To say I was pleased would be a vast understatement. Today I brought it in for a second time. It's being a cranky pants and not reliably starting. The Audi dealership supposedly fixed this issue, but like other things they have supposedly "fixed", it seems to be either half-assed repaired or still acting up. Unfortunately, it's just out of warranty. But honestly, even if it was still in warranty I'd probably strongly consider going to MM. Just as before, Joseph and his team were knowledgeable, thorough, and kind. I often feel like mechanics are trying to put one over on me because I am a woman; or they speak in a condescending way. I have never felt that way with Munich Motorworks. I felt respected and the explanations given never felt like mansplaining. Afterwards I always feel like I know a little bit more about the ins and outs of my Audi, which I enjoy geeking out on. It's obvious that Munich Motorworks takes great pride in the quality of their work and their excellent service. This is all performed by knowledgeable mechanics all at a fair price. In 20 years, and being to BMW specialty shops in several states and provinces of varying quality, I have never left a bimmer shop as thoroughly disgusted as this. I went in looking for a steering problem diagnosis on my e30, and left after being told my car was an unsafe, rotting-off-the-axles, and worth only about $500 in the current condition. It is not. I have spent thousands on regular maintenance and always top quality parts. I left, and managed to get the problem fixed elsewhere for under $200. The guy even remarked that my car was in pretty nice shape. Beyond the excessive amount of work he listed wrt the steering issue, here are some other, Trump-esque whoppers: 1) My engine was leaking oil "enthusiastically" while a mechanic was looking underneath the car. Truth: Nope, not a drop. Not in the 20 years I've owned it. 2) He could "stick his fingers through the rotting muffler". Nope. Muffler is an OEM replacement, installed 5 years / less than 12,000 miles ago. Normal surface discoloration, but solid. 3) Said he'd e-mail me a full estimate of all the work discussed to be done, likely before the end of that day. Nope. Not a peep. Anyway I left that place shocked, and mad as hell. read more

I called Munich Motorsports and spoke with Joseph regarding a Porsche Macan I was looking to buy. I wanted a quick pre-purchase inspection which he agreed to do at a moments notice. I brought the car by, he put it up on the rack looking for signs of damage, leakage, etc and then did a once over with the rest of the car. When I asked how much I owed him for the inspection he refused to take any payment. I was so impressed with him and his operation. I had some previous dealings with these mechanics and they seemed honest and nice enough. So when I needed a radiator replaced, my husband called them for estimates on a new radiator, thermostat, and hoses, and their quote seemed fair. (My car had been overheating on the highway and we found pinholes in the radiator.) We said to replace radiator for sure, but check the thermostat and hoses and replace those if necessary. They were nice enough to squeeze us in on a Saturday morning. I noticed on the receipt that we were only billed for the radiator replacement, so I assumed the hoses and thermostat had checked out fine. A week or two later my car overheated. Same exact situation as before. We tried calling for about 3-4 weeks to schedule an appointment. No one ever answered the phone or returned our calls. Finally we just stopped by in person and explained that the car was still overheating when on the highway. They indirectly confirmed our suspicions that the earlier work seemed to have been a rush job. We explained that we were afraid it might be the thermostat or hoses, which hadn't been replaced earlier even though we had asked them to if they were going bad. The guy we talked to (a manager?) didn't really seem to listen and just had us sign an inspection quote. We did, left the car there, and they said they'd call us the next day and tell us what they found (before fixing it). After no call all day, someone finally called my husband and said the car was ready to be picked up. Hmm... Guess what they fixed? The thermostat. Oh wait, hadn't they checked that last time when they were already under there with the radiator removed? Apparently not. So a $35 part and $140 worth of labor for something that should have been caught the first time? Great. We sucked it up and were just happy the car was fixed. (OK technically my husband was the one to pick up the car and suck up the extra cost, because I would have gone a little bonkers if I had been the one dealing with them). Took my car on the highway a couple weeks later, and my car overheated yet again in the exact same manner. Ten bucks says they will claim the hoses now need replacing, and it'll cost another $100+ in labor. Obviously, I'm not going back to find out. To be fair, I will say the work itself is about a 3 out of 5 stars (like the radiator work they actually did do seems fine), the mechanics are nice, and their prices aren't awful as long as you aren't paying for the same labor twice, but their communication and customer service is so horrible that it's just not worth it. A word to the wise: Be CRYSTAL CLEAR with your expectations. Get an itemized quote with all the anticipated work to be done down in writing before leaving your car there. Make sure anything you sign says somewhere that they must call you to approve any new or additional work. Have them put down in writing everything they inspected, tested, repaired, or ruled out. I know it doesn't take 1.5 hours to replace a dumb thermostat, but I have no idea what else they did in that time... Or you could just go to a better mechanic. EDIT: That overheating problem wasn't due to a problematic cooling system. It was a head gasket leak, the number one most common problem with older Subarus. Can't believe no one caught that. read more

A friend of mine has been getting his X5 serviced at Munich Motorworks for a couple years now so since I just got my 5series I figured I would give them a shot. Now I see why he highly recommended them. The service was amazing! I called and spoke to Joseph about scheduling an appointment for an oil change and a few more things I needed done to my car, not only did they get me in the same day they had the parts I needed within a couple hours. I was impressed on how quickly they were able to get me in and out of the shop but most of all on how they really took the time to explain what was done to the vehicle.
