I bought this 2007 Forester recently--it had spent years sitting by the beach, so it had some hidden rust issues I didn't know about. I took it to Valvoline for a simple service, and they completely destroyed it. They topped off fluids without warning me about a massive leak, and I barely made it down the road before the car started smoking and overheating. I thought the engine was done. ​I had it towed to Superior Import Repair, and they are miracle workers. They looked past the rust and the mess Valvoline left and basically built me a brand new engine. They replaced the head gaskets (using high-quality Six Star ones), the radiator, timing belt, water pump, and even fixed a broken window. They pressured washed the engine bay so well you can't even tell it was a 'beach car' anymore. ​It was a huge repair, but they took a car that was left for dead and made it drive like it's fresh off the lot. If you want a shop that can actually FIX major problems, go here. The value here is incredible. Since my car only has 87k miles, they used upgraded 'Six Star' gaskets and bundled the timing belt service to essentially reset my engine to zero. I cannot believe how rude and unprofessional the owner of this business was. When I went to pick up my car, he suddenly decided to make snide, completely unprompted remarks about my vehicle being "dog friendly." He then went on to tell me that if I were to get into an accident, the dog hair in my car would somehow "decrease the value of the vehicle," which he followed with, "some people have allergies." For context: I have a dog kennel in the back of my car and all of the seats are fully covered. This is not a trashed vehicle. And even if it were? It's my car. I'd hate to see his reaction to a vehicle that's actually been trashed by dogs, which, by the way, would still be entirely the owner's right. It is their vehicle, not his. The irony of all of this is that their "lobby" is dirty, grungy, and generally disgusting, visibly in disrepair, yet he felt perfectly comfortable criticizing the cleanliness and value of my vehicle. What makes this even more bizarre is that our interaction had been perfectly normal up until that point. I spent over $500 at this business (more than I would have paid at the dealership, mind you), and there was absolutely no reason for him to suddenly turn nasty other than his obvious disdain for dogs. If dog hair offends you this much, maybe servicing Subarus isn't the right line of work for you. It is an absurd and wildly inappropriate thing to say to a paying customer about their personal vehicle simply because you don't like animals. Based on my experience and after reading other reviews, this doesn't just seem like a dislike of dogs, but a pattern of disrespect toward women. Highly recommend! I have taken both my Outback and my Crosstrek to Rich since about 2015 for maintenance and repairs. The first time was because I had gone to another shop for a tire rotation and was told that my front brakes, including rotors, needed to be replaced immediately. I'm an older woman, and have worked on my own cars; I hadn't noticed any issues with the brakes. Rich told me the brakes were fine and would be for at least a couple more years. He was right, and saved me hundreds of dollars that day. His team is fast and competent, and he takes the time to tell me why they're doing what they're doing. One of the things I like best about Rich is that he always lets me know what might be coming up ("you're almost due for a transmission service, we can do that the next time you come in.") Unfortunately it was the dreaded TCV, but they connected me with a local dealership. Everyone was kind and helpful - can't recommend this place enough! I have been taking my Subarus to Rich for almost 2 decades, and this is because he is the BEST! He has taken care of my maintenance and major repairs that entire time (oil changes, tuneups, clutch, head gaskets, you name it!). He gives it to you straight, and gives you options when he can. He always looks out for his customers and never tries to upsell on things that are not needed at the time. He is great at giving a heads up on what you will need to have done in the future so that you can plan your budget accordingly. The work is always done within the timeframe given, sometimes sooner and always within the estimation, sometimes lower. And in all of the years that I have been taking my car to him, it has always stood out to me the way that he engages with his employees. He talks to them as equals, and with the utmost respect. The owner, who inherited this business from his father (who was always the most honest and kind and is now retired) literally threw a tantrum when I asked him to clarify my bill which had an extra $30 for checking the engine light. This has always been included in the full oil change inspection since I began coming 5 years ago to the location on Sandy (infact when I started using them they advertised it as included). Not the case at the Burnside location. As with many old Suby's, my engine light goes on to gas quality. I get my oil change and they verify it's the same thing and turn it off. It's literally a two minute ordeal and any shop would do it for free with other labor. When I brought this up politely, the owner yelled at me infront of his entire crew and staff saying it was their new policy. I said that's fine but if people are transferring from the Sandy location maybe just make that clear. The man then screamed at me that I didn't want to pay for his labor. I stayed calm and tried to explain I wanted to pay for the oil change and basic inspection. I never raised my voice and even had to ask why he was yelling. He then wouldn't take any of my money and said we're done doing business all while raising his voice at me. This is after being a loyal customer, without an issue, for 5 years. He would not have treated me this way, talked in this manner, or tried to charge me if I was a male or with a male. It was masogonistic, sexist, intimidating and unprofessional. #metoo read more

My husband and I rarely take our cars to mechanics, but one if our Subarus just wouldn't start for us after replacing the head gasket. It had air, fuel spark, good compression, and we'd checked just about everything there is to check for proper connection or clogs, the code reader showed nothing wrong.... we were stumped. Nearing the verge of sending her to Soobie heaven even. The last thing we'd try would be to take her to a mechanic specializing in Subarus. A friend recommended Superior Import Repair. We called the Portland repair shop and the person who answered actually listened to our problem and took a few minutes to try to pinpoint possible fixes. Fewer and fewer mechanic shops provide that kind of quality customer service; Superior Import Repair truly is superior! The man who spoke with my husband took the time and effort to go speak to one of the mechanics, and that mechanic knew that the Haynes manual we were using had incorrect information regarding how to set the timing up. I paid for thousands of dollars of repairs that I believe were never performed. Head gaskets that only lasted 56k miles and a clutch that only lasted 45k. They couldn't even put an oil pan on correctly, the last time I went to them for a simple oil change, resulting in oil splattering all over my engine. I've posted both their receipts and receipts from my current mechanic on the duplicate costly repairs. Like many other reviews stated, no responsibly was taken by "Superior Import Repair" when their repairs either weren't made or didn't last even half the time they're supposed to. I've been taking my Subaru to Superior for several years now. It's so nice to find a trustworthy repair shop like this one! They are friendly and more than fair. They've squeezed me in when I absolutely needed help and couldn't wait. Today they alerted me that an expensive repair ($500) was likely still covered by Subaru's warranty even though my car is 20 years old. They were right. Dirk is the BEST! I've been taking my 2002 Subaru Forester here for 8 years after struggling to find a fair mechanic. I've loved my car and they have helped me keep it running past 200k miles. When it came time to buy a new car I knew I wanted to stick with another Forester. Dirk help me navigate the whole process answering questions about getting my old car ready for a new owner and questions about what year and condition I should look for in a new car. He offered sound advice that took so much stress out of the process. He squeezed me in for a pre-inspection once I did find a car and went over all the info throughly. He even helped me with a couple last minute questions while I was at the dealership about to pay. Buying, selling & maintaining a car is stressful but having the team at Superior Import gives me such peace of mind knowing my old car is ready for a new home & my new car will be looked after by a great mechanic. I love this place. They know their Subarus *so well*! They have been doing this for so long that they recognize patterns in older Subarus and know just what to do. My 1999 Legacy Outback gets amazing love here and it has run much better under their care than the entire time I have had it. We purchased our 2002 Subaru Forester in late 2004 with only 24,000 miles, and after getting a glowing recommendation from a friend right after our purchase we started going to Superior Import. Our first experience with their team was when my wife had the car at work but had no way of getting the car to the shop and then getting to work. Because she worked a few miles away they offered to PICK UP and DROP OFF the car! What shop does that?? We were blown away. As I said, our Subaru had 24,000 miles when we bought her. We now have over 170,000 miles on our reliable Forester and it's all thanks to Richie and his team. They have performed every major and minor service on our car (minus most of the oil changes, I usually do those) for almost 150,000 miles. When I come in with the engine light on, Richie is right there with his OBDII reader letting me know what's happening. He'll let me know honestly exactly what the engine code means and if it needs to be fixed or if it can wait. If I call on the phone and have a question, Richie always takes the time to talk to me. That, and he's amazing at diagnosing over the phone. Once I told him that after driving for a while and the car warmed up it smelled like burning plastic. His first thought was a torn DOJ boot, probably on the driver's side since it's more common there. Brought our Subie in, and guess what? The torn DOJ boot had sprayed grease all over the exhaust system, causing the smell as the engine heated up. These guys know their stuff. Richie and his team at Superior Import Repair are above and beyond the best car shop team I have ever experienced. I had heard good things about these guys and needed a Subaru specialist. These guys were awesome on the phone and super nice. I brought my car to them to "diagnose" the problem and they instantly told me my turbo was blown. They wanted $2k to put in a new one and I have the capability to do it myself so I didn't have them do it. Got in there and my turbo was ABSOLUTELY FINE, no shaft play. Brought it somewhere else for 2nd opinion and it just needed new spark plugs. The fact that they instantly jumped to the conclusion my turbo was going out is ridiculous and I'm curious if they would've went through with it even after getting in there and realizing my turbo was fine. We'll never know and I wont take my chances there. read more

Have taken our Outback here multiple times over the years and have had nothing but great service and a car that runs perfectly. Ritchie is honest and upfront with no BS, which I totally appreciate. I also appreciate that he will come out and check the car himself. There is a no frills waiting area, but thats no problem (they have wireless to connect to). We did some major work on our outback before we moved out to the midwest and I am super thankful that Ritchie told me to purchase tires from a company that has a presence where we were moving to. He even emailed me the different companies and which tires he recommended - this was above and beyond. I am continually impressed with these guys. Being that I'm a girl that knows 0.0 about cars - it is so comforting to take your subie in and know that you're not going to get hassled. My car had a problem with a heater and was in the shop for a week until they go to the bottom of it. I was expecting the bill to be astronomical - but they told me the truth that it was just a piece that had come loose and only charged me for labor. My boyfriend had a similar experience where they had his car in there for a week because he thought something might be wrong with it. They drove it around town and no one could find any problems with the car so they told him that and charged him nothing! We love our Subie. She's part of the family, and so is Richie and his staff. We have had Richie taking care of our Subaru Forester since we've owned her. We bought our care in 2004 and had a friend recommend Superior Import. We are so thankful to get to have our car cared for. When it's time for our check-ups (as deemed by mileage or age) Richie checks our car out and lets us know what we should do, what we can wait to do and what doesn't need to be done. He takes his time to diagnose the problem and comes to us with his thoughts on what he would recommend. It's this kind of time and attention that we're thankful for. When we come to pick up our car... even at a minute to closing... Richie talks to us about what he's done, jokes with us and takes time to make sure we're happy. He never looks at his watch and never rushes us. We are so, so happy. We have recommended our friends considering buying a Subaru take their car in to Richie before buying. If it doesn't pass a third party inspection I wouldn't want to buy it, and if it doesn't pass Richie's inspection I wouldn't think twice about that car. I started to write reviews in a different mode: review of the out reach for service. I was recommended to call these folks from a serious Subaru lover as she thought they would work on other import cars. I called twice to ask some basic questions and get info and they were A+ for effort and assistance. Very friendly, very info oriented, and no pressure to make an appointment. Like other Yelpers, they were amazing on the telephone diagnostics and what may be the issue and how to resolve. I remain impressed at businesses that start the relationship well early...in the telephone call inquiry. I won't even bother to do business with places that have poor telephone service or help, let alone any bullshit rudeness that may come up in our courting stage... Regardless, they are a small family business and I highly recommend them for Subaru and other imports. I am scheduling to take my Toyota in for work and I am sold on them as my new mechanic in my life. Of course I will review post auto work but I am now starting to review the beginnings of new relationships as many a time, this is the opportunity to be wow'ed into a solid customer for life. This isn't how I imagined leaving my first review for a business but it would be a crime to not post this due to the overwhelming positive feedback this place has received. I found out about Superior Import repairs through Yelp. I have babied my 2016 WRX since buying it in late 2015. I needed two wheel studs replaced when I noticed they had been stripped by the mechanics who mounted my tires. I made an appointment to go in and get those parts replaced. I supplied my own oem parts I purchased online and only needed them to install it. Upon arriving I was greeted by Richie. He ensured me that he would take "extra care" of my car. My first thought was why he suggested to take extra precautions with my car and not anybody else's? He told me it would run around 60-70 dollars for the two studs replacement. I had no problem paying that. I received a phone call later from Richie telling me that they found out three more studs were stripped and that they had to replace those too. I thought it was sketchy since I supplied him with five studs. I didn't want to argue so I agreed to this because it's something that "had" to be done. When I arrived to pick up my car, they told me it was going to be $100 dollars. I asked to see the studs they replaced and they told me they couldn't find it and most likely recycled them. This made some sirens go off in my head but either way, it was already done and there's no point trying to get a partial refund. I paid the $100 and went on my way and that's where the nightmares began. Halfway driving home down I84, the wheel that they worked on started making thumping noises, I pulled over to find out that four of the five lugs on that wheel were so loose that they were almost completely off. My wheel was literally wobbling around on the freeway and could have completely came off. This could and would have caused some major damage to my vehicle as well as others who were driving on the freeway. I tightened my lugs and went on my way home. Furiously, I called Richie the next day demanding answers and asked if he even took a look at my car that whole day. He didn't have an answer for me but told me he would give me a complete refund. He processed the refund however he told me "we don't care to work on your car anymore, don't bring it back," he went on to explain that my car was too difficult to work on. My car is literally stock with an inch drop from lowering springs. If my car is too difficult to work on, you guys really shouldn't be calling yourself mechanics. I highly recommend searching elsewhere to get your subaru fixed. This was a shady experience on top of a shady experience. The only positive I got out of this was that they gave me a refund. I will never go back here and highly suggest that you don't. Don't let all the positive feedbacks on here fool you. read more

Last year I finally got fed up with the Subaru dealership after being quoted ~$400 to fix a broken driver's side window switch. Now, I know nothing about cars (and don't really want to) but after 30 min online I found instructions for replacement, ordered a $35 part and replaced the switch in ~10 min. Fast forward to this year: our 2000 Outback was starting to make some old car noises. Thanks to other helpful Yelpers, we found Superior and decided to take our car there. They serviced the transmission, replaced some belts, and generally got the car back up to snuff for a bit over $200. Price was fair and they were very pleasant to deal with. For another non-urgent service, their quoted price was half of the dealership. I'm hoping the car doesn't need another visit anytime soon, but I'm glad to have a place to go next time it does. read more

Fan-friggin-tastic! My Subaru sports nearly 200,000 miles and is headed on its third cross-country road trip this year. I took it to Superior Import for a pre-trip inspection. Everyone was super nice, they did a really thorough inspection and came back with a list of 'should do now', 'might want to do in the next year' and 'could be a problem eventually' things. My car is now running better than it ever has in the last three years that I've owned it. They also gave me some tips of things to watch for in the coming 20,000 miles. I have been taking my Subaru(s) in to Richie since he had a back of a parking lot shop in North Portland in the 1990s. I trust him completely. I am adding this note to my prior Yelp review because he went out of his way to help me sell my snow tires. When my 99 Subaru died, I had just bought new snow tires (on rims) from Les Swab, essentially unused. I discovered they did not fit my 2011 Subaru. I live way out of town, so Richie let me keep the tires at his shop and advertise on Craig's list. He was not there when an interested buyer came in, so one of his mechanics sold them for me. I told Richie to keep out whatever he thought was fair from the sale, but he declined, saying it would be nice, however, to give $25 of the $500 to the mechanic who sold them. Richie is very flexible and worked with my schedule to get my car in. I needed to have it back in one day and I needed to drop it off before business hours, none of this was an issue for them. Not only were they willing to work with my schedule, Richie was okay with me rescheduling about 3 times. I dropped my Forester off before work to have the timing belt replaced and picked it up after work. He called me mid-day to tell me that I was overdue for an oil change which I knew was true. They changed my oil and I still ended up paying what I was originally quoted. They are quick, reliable, and affordable. Took my 2001 Subaru Outback Wgn in for oil change and change of diff and trans fluids. The shop was recommended by an excellent shop I had frequented in Kirkland WA while up there on contract for a couple years (the reference, it turns out, was made on a meeting at some auto show where the two parties had briefly met, and "they seemed like nice people".) When I dropped the car off, everything worked perfectly fine, including the (manual) transmission. When I arrived to pick up the car at the appointed time, I had to wait over an hour. Drove home (the shop closed up behind me as I left), but could barely manage to shift gears (it wouldn't move out of one gear or into the next). Took the car back the next day and was informed they had put some sort of "conditioner" in the transmission. I told them to flush the transmission and put in clean fluid. Took them all freaking day, and then I had to wait another hour after the time they told me to pick up the car because the kid (looked maybe 18 if that) working on the car had put the "wrong fluid" in the transmission, and they had to replace it. On the drive home the transmission worked slightly better, but it was still a struggle to shift gears, requiring lots of double and triple clutching. I took the car to Wentworth, and ended up having to pay $900 to have the transmission cleaned out (they said it was full of "goop"). "Superior" Import repair professed innocence and claimed the transmission was messed up when I first brought the car in. Absolutely no acceptance of fault, no apology of any kind, no offer of compensation. I'll never, ever, ever let these hacks touch my car again. I should have taken the filth of the place and the age of the employees (I'd venture a guess that the average is in the early 20's) as a warning sign. read more

I took my older Subaru (2004 Legacy Outback) to Superior after researching reviews on the internet. I had been taking my car to another repair business and they were not being honest and actually made it run worse in hopes I would just let them keep repairing my car. I took my car in to Superior and on the spot they did a quick diagnostic and helped me understand the issues. They agreed to keep it and report back to me the next day which they did. I agreed to all the issues they found and had them repair my car. It was done in a few days and now runs like a top! Superior Imports is an honest, reasonable and fast repair shop. Disappointed :( Seriously, I'm actually pretty sad about this. These guys have been my mechanic since their shop was on Prescott and 82nd. I've had my car taken to them countless times over the last 5 to 6 years or so and have been nothing but satisfied. When they opened their shop on Burnside it was right down the street from my work, how convenient is that! Unfortunately Richie at the Burnside shop asked me to start taking my car to the location on Sandy because it's an "older" Subaru and they want to work on the older one's there. I was disappointed and resisted a bit, but eventually stopped trying to take it to Richie and complied with his request. Since making the switch I've been a little less satisfied but they still seemed to be pretty good and honest mechanics. Worst thing about them in comparison is their lack of communication with me whenever my car is there. This last issue with my car is turning out to be the final straw. It has a rough time starting and idling properly in cold temperatures so I took it to the shop to get it looked at. Next day they say come pick it up, it's all done. Replaced a part, $150 charge, thank you have a good day. Went to go pick it up, it was not fixed. Doing the exact same thing. Mechanic guy came out, got it to start (barely), fiddled with something using a screwdriver and said come back if it still has issues. Brought it back the next day Attempt #2) dropped it off and they kept it overnight so it would be nice and cold. Don't remember what exactly they said they did but was advised to come pick it up, she's running good. Nope... same symptoms so I brought it back again. Attempt #3) Dropped it off again and left it overnight again. They call me the next day saying was a bad ground to the idle control valve, they've tested it several times, she's good to go... Nope. Same symptoms, maybe a little better... but a VERY little. Attempt #4) Dropped it off yesterday to leave it overnight. Was told they'd call me today. They didn't, I call them they say someone didn't show up for work he'll get to it tomorrow "I promise". Feeling kinda blown off but I guess if someone didn't show up for work what can you do. For the record the only time they called me was after attempt #3, all other times I had to call or drop by to follow up with them. See what I mean about poor communication? To their benefit they did not charge additionally for any of the "work" they did on subsequent visits. I can't believe it's working out like this, they have been so good to me in the past. This feels like a 1 star experience but I am giving 3 because of our long, good, history. I'm really REALLY bummed it's working out like this, It almost feels like I'm loosing a friend. My plan is to wait and see what happens tomorrow, allow them to finish attempt #4, and if it's still not fixed take it to Wentworth Subaru Service center and see what happens there. Even if they do fix it I feel like I should try a different place next time. Ever since I was asked to go to their Sandy location it just hasn't been the same experience. They won't miss me, they are a very busy shop, it's a shame. I will update this review as this situation plays out. Update: They gave it back to me broken again, this time he wasn't even sure what to tell me as whatever was done wasn't written down. Took it to Wentworth and just got it back today. Everything went well, was done on time. The guys at Superior were on the right track, it was in the wiring harness. Couple of wires to idle control were grounding to the engine. Anyway, I'm still disappointed in the lack of communication and being put on the back burner for so long at their Sandy shop and still won't go back. But being that I inadvertently wrote this on the Burnside shops page (didn't know there were 2 pages) I bumped their stars up to 4 because Richie has never let me down. That was until he told me to stop bringing my car there because it was too old :/. I would still recommend the Burnside location to other people. This was one of the best experiences I have had with an auto mechanic and will definitely be back when my Subie needs some doctoring! The mechanics and and the owner were extremely helpful and not overzealous running up repair costs. The owner even made suggestions on how to prioritize repairs (even when it went against their own self interest). Pricing was very reasonable and service was fast and professional. A++++. read more

This is the first mechanic I've used multiple times and, despite hating to spend money on car repairs, I always feel like I'm in good hands. Clear communication. They always give timeframes for repairs that don't need to be done right away. I can't say much about cost of repairs because I never get estimates. So I have to trust I'm getting a fair deal. read more
