Came in with my Porsche for a smog check. I talked to the owner Eric that I also have a mini and he offered me to check any time when something is up on the mini and made the smog check. Even this little interaction gave me a good feeling about that place and I just would wish they would do service for Porsche as well. My first interaction with the shop was for diagnosing weak heat coming from the HVAC of our 2017 Mini Clubman. They found the car was low on coolant, and topped up the coolant for free. Saved me freezing my butt off in the winter. Months later, I brought our car in for engine oil and brake fluid service. They were also able to diagnose a knocking noise which ended up being the engine mounts, a rear diff leak, and a water pump/ thermostat leak. Turns out the low coolant months earlier was likely due to the water pump/ thermostat leak. Our car was in the shop for a little over a week. It's our only car, and I really needed the car for work. They offered to cover the cost of my rental car for the few days I rented it to get to my clinical rotations which was much appreciated. Overall, Eric over at Boyd Motor Werks offered honest service and opinion on the repairs needed for our car. Would highly recommend this shop for any BMW/ Mini owner in Portland. read more

Luckily I found Boyd Motor Werks after I had a very negative experience with another Indy shop (tried to change their labor cost by $2,200 after they looked at my car). Eric was quick to get me in and installed my M-Performance Brake kit, stainless lines, and springs perfectly. I had heard of shops having a hard time with soft brake feel after the install, but mine feel great. They knew enough to recode the car correctly and made sure there was zero air in the lines (both causes of soft feel brakes after the kit install). These guys are the REAL DEAL!!! Brought a 2007 650i in for a pre-buy inspection. They were busy and I am from out of town. Eric said the soonest he could do is Monday, but I leave this weekend. He agreed to take it last minute. They performed an inspection 100% above and beyond what I expected. Even told me cigarette lighter didn't work (who tests that??? Ha!!!). Fair price for a job well done. I was not able to negotiate a deal on the car (go figure) but happy I spent the money to double check. I would have paid $13k for car. Ask was $14k. After the pre inspection defects found, I offered $12k. And would have gone to $12.5-$13k. They rebutted w $13k and came all the way to my number, $12.5k. But the place was sketchy and unprofessional, so I decided to find another car. If I lived in Portland, This place would be my shop!! read more

replaced an amplifier in my e38 with dsp from an e39 with dsp. It needed to be coded to work. Medford BMW wouldn't even attempt to do it, even though I would have payed them. My normal shop was going to charge 2 hours labor just to try. I drove to Portland for a doctor's appointment and stopped here. It took him about 10 minutes to code the amp and he told me to enjoy my radio. I highly recommend this shop. I don't recommend Medford BMW. read more

Eric Edwards, owner and operator was friendly and immediately earned my trust when I walked into his shop without an appointment. I explained the condition, he diagnosed the repair needed immediately and quoted me a price that was slightly less than 50% of the price from another shop I had been using for years. He offered to fix it within 1-2 days. He successfully performed the repair at the low price we agreed without a long lead-time. His personal approach, including handshake, were reassuring and he noted a couple of minor items to keep a watch on before my next visit. If I could tell you, that YOU could save $15,000 dollars by not coming here, would that sway your decision? To save you from reading the long, drawn out version of my story, the short version is I took my car in for a routine oil change, and after many return visits over the course of a week, $900 dollars in repairs later, the final diagnosis was that my 2011 BMW needed a new engine. Of course, this was devastating, but something did not set right with this. I decided to take my car for a second opinion, and it was quickly discovered that not only did the engine NOT need to be replaced (they couldn't fathom how this conclusion was even met), BUT my car's repair was completely covered by a recall, leaving me to not cover 1 penny of the expense. The diagnosis was quickly discovered with the connection of a computer, and the diagnostic code appearing. How this was not caught by a BMW specific work shop is beyond me. read more

After having delt with dealerships for years, Boyd Motor Werks is clearly all about minimalism. Their shop isn't fancy. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Everything looks dated, paint is fading on the building exterior, and there are no fancy waiting areas. I wasn't offered a diet coke or biscotti when I came in, nor do they provide a giant big screen TV to watch while you wait. I had my car towed here after it refused to start after multiple attempts. After providing my information and a brief description of the problem and my suspected diagnosis (fuel pump went out), I handed over the keys and took the bus to my next destination. No rental cars are offered here. Roughly 4-5 hours later, I received a call from the service manager that proved my amateur diagnosis was in fact correct. They stated the specific parts that needed to be replaced, labor hours involved, and the total cost, and when my car would be ready. Roughly 2 hours later, my car was fixed and I was on my way... only after riding the bus to get back to the shop. Today, I called the dealership and got a quote for the same exact repair. The dealership quoted me appoximately $200 more for the same (relatively minor) repair. You know what that $200 pays for? Diet Cokes. Biscotti. Big Screen TVs. A BMW loaner car. If you need all that pampering, by all means, stick with the dealership. As for me, though, I don't need all that. I'd much rather keep as much of my hard earned money as possible. read more

My BMW 3-series received a concerning check control light during a business trip driving from Seattle to Portland 2 days ago. When arrived in Portland, the concierge (a Portland native) at the Hotel Monaco where I was staying recommended Boyd's. I called and talked to Gary the owner - a very kindhearted guy who really cares about his clients and his passion for Bimmers is extremely apparent. despite being extremely busy (so busy he warned me they probably couldn't get to it until next week) he told me to bring it over so he could scan the codes to determine requires service and ensure would be safe for me to drive home. And he only charged 1/2 hour $45 for the scan, which you NEVER see). Despite being 4-5 days out, he squeezed me in and work was completed the following morning so I was able to return to Seattle that afternoon. these guys are extremely efficient, inexpensive, and completely trustworthy. I drive to Portland once a month, and it's comforting to know there's a place in Portland similar to my BMW specialist in Seattle. Top Shelf. read more

Boyd has serviced my car now for about three years and not only have they treated my car very well, but they also are a great couple of guys to hang out with. Gary and Eric both take time to explain the "why's" and the "how's" in addition to the "how much" of what it's going to take to service my car. Gary sometimes even goes farther, explaining exactly the difference between the service I get with them, vs the service I'd get somewhere else, like the dealer. Their willingness to explain in great detail what's being done to my car and why it costs what it costs does the one thing that keeps me coming back: it allows me to trust them. A long past review described how sometimes these guys aren't the best in calling you back. I've had that experience too. However, my philosophy is, I'm in the driver's seat here. It's my car, so I don't mind calling to followup on what's going on with my car. For the most part though, they've called me to let me know if something is not going as scheduled or if there's gong to be a delay. I would not recommend this place. My check engine light came on a week back and a couple days later one of my tires popped. Anyways, long story short, I ordered my specific tire online and brought it to the shop for them to change it out and read the codes that were causing my check engine light to come on. The next day, they called me and said nothing was wrong with my car. It was an issue with the gas cap being put on wrong that caused the check engine light to come on. So, just to read the codes on my car and change the tire (that I bought prior) they charged me $155. I asked around to make sure that price was ridiculous, and it was. This place ripped me off and I wouldn't recommend it. They took advantage of a struggling college student and they will Not get my business again. Edit: Eric, another mechanic from the shop called me and explained all of the charges in detail. He also sincerely apologized for the experience and offered me an oil change next time I come in. I really appreciated the explanation of what I was charged for and the personal apology. I changed my review because I will be taking my car back to this shop in the future. read more

Just got back from here and i must say i'm very impressed with the service done and the service alone. very communicative, honest, straight forward and i feel that is what we all look for. i recently purchased a 2008 BMW 528i and the brake sensors went off so i thought i would look around and find some quotes, looked up reviews and found these guys!!!! called them set an appointment and long story short my brake sensors were at fault. they did a diagnosis because i just wanted to make sure that everything was okay after that episode with the brakes and they recommended my electric water pump would need replacement soon. so i did leave due to it was not in my budget at the time and a few days later noticed that the fan was becoming really loud which they had notified me would happen if it ended up failing. so i scheduled it for today and done in about 2.5-3 hours. I would definitely recommend them to my family and friends, and just at ease that i found myself a new repair shop i can count on always coming back if i ever need anything taking care of. I have owned several BMW's over the past 20 years and recently passed my 2005 530! down to my son who lives in Portland. We needed some repairs and took it to Eric as he was honest about the service needed and offered a fair price for the repairs. Unfortunately after the service was completed we had another issue that we couldn't determine if it was a result of the repairs or a new problem. When my 325 developed an issue with its suspension that could have been very expensive to repair, I chose Boyd after hearing from my former mechanic and a fellow car enthusiast that the owners are among the most reputable bimmer mechanics in Portland. I was able to schedule a repair for two days out. Eric was polite on the phone and straightforward about what he thought the issue was. I dropped my car off and he gave me a ride to work which was convenient and very courteous. Within three hours Eric called me back to check before performing the work, which I specifically requested. He identified and repaired the issue for a third of what I'd expected to pay. I was thrilled. He also threw in a brief inspection to let me know what other issues I might expect. I couldn't pick my car up immediately, but Boyd has a key drop system that allowed me to pay for the repair and get my keys back the same evening. Very convenient.
