5 star sandwiches! We came here for lunch, it's smallish and not particularly much to look at, but the food was great. For an appetizer we had the fried pickles with a chipotle aioli that were crispy and tasty, and went perfectly with the sauce. Lunch entrées were a Rueben, the cheese burger of the day cooked to medium rare perfection, and what has to be the best smoked roast beef sandwich I've ever had. The fries were very good, thinner cut and crispy, left for you to season, which I prefer. Lots of crunchy little pieces, so yummy. My husband had the chicken Caesars and was not at all impressed. Wonderful hamburgers. Friendly service. You have to try the Fried Pickles. I have been here 3 times this week (Including Fathers Day). Fathers day I treated myself to a dark on tap beer. When I asked if I could avoid the Carb side with the hamburger - they offered grilled asparagus - class act. Sodas are refilled, a bunch. Beer was good. Only problem - is even if people are waiting - they don't push you out (I mean you have your check, its just they don't aggressively clear you away to make you unwelcome) so you might end up feeling guilty. The food here is pretty good. I got a side salad and the saxonburger (turkey instead of beef) with sweet potato fries. The turkey burger wasn't made from ground meat, which I didn't appreciate. It was more like the patties you buy frozen and throw on the grill. But it still tasted good along with the fried pickles, cheddar, and chipotle mayo that made up the sandwich. Ultimately, it's a comfortable environment with two or three TVs. So you can watch the game or just have a nice meal with friends. The menu is interesting. I have been going to Murray ave grill for years. It was a nice place to go to since there was something on the menu for everyone. However my last visit 10 days ago was a horrible experience. While into my second bite of my side salad there was a live bug in it. We quietly told the waitress who only offered to bring me another one. Fearing more contaminated lettuce I opted for fries. The Manager came over & said he'd give us new salads. We asked how he can insure the lettuce is safe he just said you'll get new lettuce. My big issue is neither waitress nor Manager ever apologized for this incident. When the bill came i asked waitress what adjustment she made & she said i took off ur $2 side salad that u sent back. I wasn't looking for something free I just felt manager could have handled better by at least apologizing. Us long time customers will not be going back ! read more

So the two stars are for the food and not the customer service, which was great! However, when I am paying $30 dollars for a filet minion steak, I expect it to be cooked correctly and to have some flavor. Zero stars. Also the sides.... $30 dollars for a dish and you serve me four asparagus spears and five tiny potatoes!? I am not kidding - 5 very small potatoes. Wow! I cannot comment on the food because they would not seat us. 5 of us came on Monday evening and were told after a discussion between the bartender / manager? and a hostess that it would be a 45 minute wait for a 6 top or 5 top. There was a 4 top and a 2 top available close together and we were told "no there was not enough room for us to sit over there". This is a small place, but i have been there before with 7 of us and they managed to put some tables together and seat us in the exact same area where we were told there isn't enough room. It is small place and basically they cannot accommodate more than 4 people . When we asked about those tables the bartender shook her head and said no. We were then told to give them a name and phone number and told to leave and they would call when the table was ready. THEY NEVER CALLED US ! Fortunately we ended up at the Union Grill in Oakland which was great. However, we felt that basically they did not want our business. It was very clear . It's a shame as I live out of town and was really looking forward to eating there. My cousin is a regular but NEVER AGAIN ! I am totally turned off. The blond bartender especially, seemed to not want to seat us. i guess she thought we weren't good enough to eat at this establishment is the only thing I can come up with for the very weird reception we received. read more

In Squirrel Hill, there are many restaurants yet only a few good ones and Murray Avenue Grill remains one of the best! The food is always good and consistent, the staff becomes like family and the overall vibe is that of a intimate neighborhood restaurant. My family has eaten in many good restaurants yet Murray Ave. Grill remains our " go to"place and my children think that it is an extension of home. By the way, there's been much talk as to who makes the best hamburger in Pittsburgh and our vote goes here and, yes, as reviews state, the Cobb Salad is delicious! read more

Murray Avenue Grill is a rare gem. It is a local restaurant whose owner, Mark, is on site most nights. I was impressed when Mark remembered my name the second time I visited! The clientele ranges from very young to very old. They play 50's music, but not too loud. The food is very good with a good range of entrees. They have a full bar. With your bill at the end of the meal you get two small Tootsie rolls. How unique is that? I love this place and will definitely visit again when visiting Pittsburgh. I've eaten there over a dozen times and the food and service are consistently very good. They only take reservations for parties of 6 or more, but I've never had to wait for more than 20 minutes to be seated. Also, there may be open seats at the bar while waiting, or you can eat at the bar. read more

Eh. Whole experience was lackluster. Server "greeted" us with "Can I get you anything to drink?" No hello or anything. Was pretty apathetic the whole time. We both ordered burgers, took over 20 minutes till they arrived. My Pittsburgh burger was dry and lacked flavor; the bun was twice as big as the burger. Bacon was hard, dry, and tasteless. Fries looked fresh cut but were soggy. Mr. said his was good though, once he added some mayo. Only plus is that the burger was clearly handmade and not some frozen patty. read more

The biggest advantage of this place is that it's right in front of my office! Other than that, it's just average. The salads are good but not great. The sandwiches are less than average. I go here quite regularly, mainly because of the good selection of food and micro beer. The waiting staff and manager are really friendly, and I have always received top-notch service. We were in the area and decided to eat at t the closest place to where we parked. Crazy but interesting. This is where we dined. My husband had a Buffalo Chicken wrap. It was chicken with buffalo sauce, lettuce, and cheese in a wrap. Basic but tasty. I had a salad that had grilled chicken, black beans, corn, roasted red peppers and tortilla strips. The wait staff is nice and patient, the food is delicious and they have perfected the art of seasoning food (salmon is perfect, as are the fries). This is one of my favorite restaurants in town. My friend and I usually come for their gourmet hamburgers after spending the day in one of the parks. The hamburgers are thick and juicy and delicious. They have every combination of hamburger topping imaginable and are the only joint I've tried in town that actually gets "medium rare" right. (I am from the Midwest and deplore the East Coast's way of overcooking meat.) Their specials are also consistently good - well seasoned and well balanced. Prices are very fair and serving sizes are generous. My only complaint is that they are often playing loud pop music so that the inside of the restaurant sounds like a middle school dance. I don't need Britney blaring at me from the speakers while I'm trying to enjoy a nice meal and talk to my friends. read more

We started off with the zucchini fries, which, while not fry-shaped (planks instead), were quite delicious. They were served with remoulade instead of marinara, and it was okay but heavy on the mayo and low on the horseradish. I had the buffalo chicken wrap, and they honored my request to swap the ranch (the horror!) for the more traditional bleu cheese dressing. The BF and I have been talking about going here for a while; he's been of course, but I had not. We finally got to go with a friend of ours. It was a Friday night and they said the wait was about 15-20 minutes, but surprisingly we got seated in about 5 minutes. I liked the atmosphere. It's more restaurant then bar. It has a bar and there are people of all ages are there drinking but it's not the college-kids-getting-smashed-and-ripping-the-urinals-off-the-walls kind of place either. We were really hungry so we went with an app to split; the BBQ chicken flatbread. It's a flatbread topped with chicken, red onions, mozzarella cheese and BBQ sauce. I thought it was pretty good. As good as something with red onions can be at least. Outside on the specials board they had some interesting options, one of which was a seafood ravioli that Todd ended up getting and he loved! After perusing the menu for about 15 minutes I finally decided on a fish sandwich. Don't ask me why....They have dozens of delicious looking options and I picked a fish sandwich???? It was okay, but I feel like I totally dropped the ball. I got overwhelmed and couldn't pick a decent menu option. The BF got a brisket sandwich or something that I got to taste. It was excellent, as it should be when described on the menu as "Best Smoked Brisket Around!" Our waiter was polite and attentive. Even giving a butler-type bow and hand flourish at one point, which I thought was hysterical. We will definitely be back and I am totally going to up my ordering game next time. read more

A neighborhood gem that's for sure. They have a variety of menu choices. We try to experiment and not stay with any one dish. But, I must say, I love the fried pickles! Their salads and dressing are terrific and another staple is the chicken fingers. Burgers are high on the list and they rotate a special burger each day. Worth trying all of them. We once had a hotdog/hamburger-interesting, you might say. Well, also awesome!! It was so good-like a picnic on a bun! They usually have a wait if you go at peak hours. They also have a few outdoor tables that fill up quickly. They do not take reservations and you can't call ahead. So plan accordingly. They have a bar with seating where you can get food as well. I did not like the lamb burger-it has too many spices that take away from the lamb taste. Would love it to be more plan. Also, the rolls with the salads are not very good. But, who cares! Don't eat the roll!! The space is an odd shape that might limit table capacity, but can't really think of another floor plan. But, it all works. They stay busy and their food is fresh. I've lived in Squirrel Hill for almost 26 years and this place has been here as long as I can remember. I keep hoping I'll get the quality of food as described on its menu, but am often disappointed. Take last Sunday night during NBA game 7. I placed an order by phone to take out, which was ready for pick up on time.I don't think that had anything to do with what I got unless whoever was in the kitchen was glued to the TV screen. Cheeseburger sliders: way over done. Salmon burger: all bread crumbs. Fries: three-inch soggy brown tasteless shapes. Lump crab cakes were shredded and lump-less (but tasty). Stopped by this locale for soup and sandwiches 'to go' today and was appalled by the conversation between 3 employees standing around the bar. One asked the other two if they had ever 'child molested a cat' and then went on to ask why child molesters are so vilified! First and foremost - abhorrent ignorance is alive and well. Secondly, awareness of your surroundings while conversing at work is obviously not a requirement to work at the Murray Avenue Grill. As I left I told the bartender I had hoped I misunderstood their conversation and was told 'that's why we call him a freak'. NEVER going back and recommend the same for all. The only thing I've eaten here was a burger, but it was a damn good burger. I got this burger with smoked gouda, mushrooms, bacon, lettuce, and tomato. It was massive and juicy and cooked with a nice red center. I rarely finish a whole burger (I think I just get turned off toward those last few bites when the bun goes flat and the cheese starts to congeal and the lettuce is semi-wilted...you know what I'm saying...) but I completely cleaned it off the plate. Sweet potato fries were excellent albeit a tad salty for my taste. Service was fast and friendly. No complaints about this place, honestly. Murray Ave Grill is essentially the only American restaurant in Sq Hill, so they've got you cornered if you just want a steak or salad. The space isn't bad, but they play '50's music, which just doesn't go with anything in there. The service is usually nice and attentive. They've got a decent beer selection, and the drinks flow until 2am. When the weather's nice, there's outdoor seating; and they also have Sunday brunch. read more

If you're in Squirrel Hill, avoid the chains and head to the Murray Ave. Grill. Unassuming, affordable and very cozy. If I didn't live across the river in South Side, I could easily see this becoming my neighborhood bar. I wandered in here with a friend on a Saturday afternoon, and had the most delicious black bean burger. My friend highly recommends the Reuben as well - she took half of hers home.
