Servizio was excellent with owner Ricardo coming outside to check on us and give us his history of the cafe . He even gave us generous sampling of a Lambrusco after our discussion. The service has a strange tone, and it isn't limited to one employee they all seem to share the same indifferent, slightly annoyed demeanor. The experience feels less like genuine hospitality and more like, "You're here what can I get you?" On my most recent visit, others in my group noticed and commented on the same thing without any prompting from me. Since they had never been before, it confirmed that it wasn't just my perception. One small interaction captured the overall tone. We asked whether they happened to have a birthday candle, and an employee responded in an annoyed tone by pointing to the candle on our table which, realistically, no one would put on a birthday dessert. We completely understood that they might not have one; it wasn't an unreasonable expectation or request. A simple, friendly response like, "Unfortunately, we don't, but we do have some delicious desserts," would have been perfectly fine. It wasn't the answer that bothered us. it was the way we were made to feel for asking. It may seem like a small interaction, but great hospitality is built on small moments. The atmosphere is warm, cozy, and inviting, but unfortunately, the service doesn't reflect that same feeling. People return to places where they feel welcomed and appreciated, especially in a city like Houston with so many wonderful food and wine options. I genuinely want The Library to thrive because it has everything else it needs to remain a true neighborhood favorite.

They also have darts and an outdoor seating area in the back, so it's an easy place to hang out for a while with a few friends. It's usually not packed, but there are always enough people around that it doesn't feel empty either. The location is a little strange since it's tucked into a random-looking strip center, but once you're inside it works. Overall, it's a good, laid-back neighborhood bar with a nice beer selection and fair prices. I'd definitely recommend it if you're already in the area, although I probably wouldn't go too far out of my way specifically to visit.

Since our work schedules didn't allow us to get there earlier enough to sit at the bar, we booked for 5 p.m., right as dinner service started. We were really there to enjoy happy hour: cocktails, wine and a few bar bites rather than a full dinner. That seemed to cause a little confusion. When our server asked about dinner, we explained that we were just going to hang out, drink and snack. Almost immediately, all of the menus were taken and the dessert menu appeared, which felt a little awkward considering we had barely gotten started. There were also some service quirks throughout the evening. Our server had very animated hand gestures and body language when pouring drinks and setting things down. Almost a little too theatrical for the setting. It's not a fine-dining restaurant, so some of the formal flourishes felt unnecessary. She also missed a couple of things. I ordered a sidecar alongside my first dirty gin martini, but the sidecar didn't arrive until my second martini. Not a huge deal, but noticeable. The drinks themselves were solid. I had two Condesa gin martinis, both super dirty and bruised or skating (AKA lots of little ice chips). I also appreciated that the blue cheese olives are hand-stuffed. For food, I ordered the country ham beignets, which were cute little bites, plus one fried oyster and one baked oyster. The baked oyster was very flavorful, and the presentation with the oysters nestled among the rocks was really nice. Unfortunately, the fried oyster was almost entirely batter and was so overcooked that the oyster itself was chewy enough that I couldn't finish it. Thankfully, I only ordered one. I do like that you can mix and match the oyster preparations, though, and that they're priced per oyster: $2 each regardless of the style (raw, baked, fried). There was live music, and the restaurant got surprisingly packed for a weekday, which made it pretty loud while we there. That's understandable given how busy it became, but it did make conversation a little harder with a larger group. Still, I'd consider the overall experience a good one. Bar Bludorn is already a go-to, and one slightly overcooked oyster and some over-the-top service quirks certainly aren't enough to keep me away.
