My son sent me a Christmas package from Murrays. When it arrived the lox was not edible as also was corned beef. I know this was not a cheap present and contacted Murray's who refused to make any adjustment. As a former New Yorker growing up with Eli Zabar, I felt this establishment is terrible. Most would not exclude Nova / Lox from the 'smoked salmon' category, yet somehow they miraculously lifted the 'no smoked fish' stipulation on their $12 for $24* Amazon Local** voucher after I had been perusing the display for a few minutes. Feeling foolish that I overlooked this on the voucher when I spotted the notice on the glass, it was certainly a concession when I couldn't get any of their sturgeon, but that said, the nova was not substandard, albeit certainly sliced for use on bagels/bialys (and packed greasily in a plastic bag accordingly). I must say that given they have been around for decades and people usually love this kinda grub, it seems that it isn't exactly a hit with Yelpers, even after these group deals (I'll be the 35th review). i actually bought lunch here because i had a hankering for a real deli sandwich. im not exactly sure what price-fixing scheme in new york allows all places to charge $16 bucks for a pastrami sandwich, but let me just say, it's worth it. i love the quality of each individual ingredient. nothing is skimped, nothing is passed over. the bread, meat and sides are all thoughtfully made, carefully portioned and equally yummy. i also really like the chicken soup, which is actually rather clean eats. not too salty, and a lot of carrots. ooh my fave. i ate a 40 dollar lunch with great zeal. i'll order again later to try the breakfast bagels + lox all the reviewers are talkin about. read more

Don't do it. There is a reason why when I entered Murray's there was no one inside. They get their bagels from H and H and mine tasted like it had seen the inside of a freezer at some point. They do not serve coffee except if you want to buy a bag of beans. The minimum charge for a credit card is $15. And, there's no place to sit. I suspect if you want to just buy fish to take out and home this could be a good choice. After a few bites of my $10 bagel, cream cheese, and lox (paid with cash), I tossed it and headed over to Tal Bagels across the street where I had a decent and warm sesame seed bagel and cream cheese plus a hot cup of coffee and a place to sit. read more

What a delightful treat Murray's Sturgeon shop is. Amazing Lox, Amazing tuna salad, Knishes to die for... Honestly, what a deli should be. The Rye and Pumpernickle bread is kick butt- just enough seeds in the Rye Bread and the pumpernickle is always the perfect softness. My usual at Murray's Sturgeon is lox & bagel w/ Scallion Cream Cheese, tomato, onions and a few capers to top it off. Delish Delish! Awhile ago, I bought a Groupon for this place for myself and a friend of mine. Because I didn't want to give out my friend's email address, I printed both of the Groupons in my name (I was new to how Groupon works) and simply gave him one of the two. When we went in to redeem our Groupons, the owner/manager refused to allow us to redeem them both on the same day, insisting that we could come back the next day to redeem the second one. We explained that we live at separate addresses, offered to show our Driver's Licenses, etc., but he wouldn't budge. I understand that both Groupons had MY name on them, but, still, the whole thing was ridiculous, especially given that he was saying we could come back 16 hours later to use the other Groupon. It was just so incredibly inflexible. He also admitted that if we had come in separately on the same day it would've been a non-issue that the Groupons both had my name on them. So that experience definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. But what left an even worse taste was the salami we bought. It was so waxy and flavorless that we wound up giving it to a homeless man on the way home and getting a refund for the second Groupon. Sorry, Murray's--the inflexibility on the Groupon I could almost forgive, since it was my mistake to put them both in my name, but the inedible food? Nope. I'll stick with Zabar's. read more

I purchased a bagel here today-- and when I was walking out of the store, I had another look at the bagel and saw (plastic) green strings (think hair mixed in the dough of the bagel-- but it wasn't hair, it was bright green in color). So I went back to let the store owner and clerk know-- the clerk tried to tell me that "that's normal for a whole wheat bagel." I asked them-- "um plastic bright green string is normal in bagels?" Seriously?? Not only does this place not care about food safety and quality-- when you point it out, they actually have the audacity to deny it and tell them its "normal"?!! Personally I don't know ANY whole wheat bagels that come with bits and pieces of bright green string baked into it!!!! I will never come here again, and don't suggest others come-- read more

It is worth going to this place just to smell the air. If you really care about your smoked salmon, sturgeon, white fish, halvah or many other things that make German Jew like myself happy, this is the place. I was completely unprepared for this place. They have scallion cream cheese that actually smells like fresh scallions. I live in MA so thank goodness they offer shipping. Everything I got here was like the best I ever had. What can one say about Murray's? It lacks the ambience of Russ & Daughters. It lacks the fame of Barney Greengrass. It clearly lacks Zabar's breadth of offerings. But those in the know know the truth: Murray's has the best smoked fish in the city. Period. Over a three year period, I have done head to head cage matches between these four venerable establishments. Nova, sable and sturgeon. All four places have excellent nova. You can't go wrong with any of them (well, Zabar's has slipped a little bit...they don't cut as consistently thin as they used to). Where Murray's shines is the sable, and their incomparable sturgeon. It's just better. It's moist, succulent, and basically perfect; they cut it just right, and I don't care who says R&D's or BG's is better: we blind tasted, and Murray's won. There is clearly an UWS code of silence about this place. When you talk about smoked fish in New York City, no one mentions Murray's. But try going in there to buy before one of the Jewish holidays, and you will see that this place is no fluke (ha ha). People wait hours to get this fish (I know I did and I was *not* alone). If you "like" smoked fish, you have several choices in New York City, all of which were perfectly good. If you "need" smoked fish; know that it can only come hand - sliced; or for whatever other reason want the absolute best... you only have one choice. 14 bucks for a sturgeon sandwich. Fortunately it's delicious enough that you can savor every costly bite. No seating at Murray's, but lots of tasty looking deli sandwich options. Also, I'm no knish guy, but their spinach one was pretty good and much cheaper than the sturgeon. Rugelach and apple strudel are all for sale, which I will try when I return. There are lots of pickled items I may not try, though getting a plateful of their herring and washing it down with vodka might be lots of fun. read more

Whadaya want me to say about Murray's? You hungry? You nearby? Go to Murray's! Zabar's is nice, but you'll spend three hours in there. Murray's is tiny. You're in and out. The fish is excellent, the roast beef is house-made and a glorious pink, the pastrami is not house-made but it's still good. They've got bagels and bialys and soup to take home. Good sour pickles and pickled green tomatoes. Not for nothing, my boyfriend says the Latkes are better than PJ Bernstein's, crispier on the outside and moister on the outside(I'm not rational when it comes to PJ Bernstein's food, as I grew up two blocks away so we'll just let that slide), and he really flipped over the spinach Knish, giving it a higher mark than Pick-A-Bagel. read more

I'm not a fish expert, but I picked up a few herrings here and quickly devoured them when I got home. They have herring, salmon, etc. prepared several different ways. Even the tuna salad was great, a little different from normal tuna salad, smoother and more finely chopped. You can pick up a pretty good meal here for only $10 or so and the friendly staff is more than helpful in helping explain their offerings. They also run some specials during the week so definitely ask if you live in the area. read more

I couldn't possibly recall how many different places I've had smoked salmon and pickled herring in cream sauce but hands down this place is the best! If Rolls Royce opened a smoked and pickled fish store this would be it...worth every penny. The temperature of the fish is perfect. I typically order some to eat right at the counter in addition to take home (standing only as it's a take-out only place) but that's because what little discipline I have vanishes the moment I walk in there. Murray's is one of the staples of the Upper West Side. Their tuna salad is amazing, as is the egg salad. I can't find anything like it anywhere else. I'd highly recommend getting a container of tuna salad, egg salad, and bagels for a perfect brunch. If you're visiting the Upper West Side, you have to try Murray's. Not long after arriving a yokul from remote upstate, I and my more sophisticated NYC friends at Columbia read the 1964 Claiborne article in the Times, scraped together a few dollars and had our first experience at Murray's. Although I am now back in Upstate, to this day I manage to treat myself to Murray's sable, salmon, tongue, whitefish salad, bialys and other treats every year. In fact, I just sprang for my first Murray's package by mail. Expensive, but everything arrived as perfect as if I had visited the shop, could not wait and began consuming the sable and bialy out on Broadway. With the ongoing revolution in cuisine and increasing access to the world's finest fare, there is no other destination that has remained at the top of my gastronomic list than this wonderful shop. I got a Groupon for Murrays and I was so excited because I love Jewish breakfasts: bagels, bialys, smoked fish, pot cheese, the whole nine! But I have to admit I was disappointed with Murrays. The bagels and bialys are nothing to write home about. They weren't too fresh and not what you'd expect from a notoriously delicious "NY Bagel." The pot cheese was pretty good but pretty expensive: it's about $2 cheaper at Zabars for the same amount. I also got whitefish spread and was sooo disappointed!! I prefer a smooth and savory whitefish spread, but this had small chunks of celery and was even a little on the sweet side!! And I wanted to get a salmon spread (which is typical NY fair btw) and they didn't have any. The guy suggested salmon cream cheese so I gave it a shot. It was more like cream cheese that was dyed bright pink (because by the way, salmon does not turn cream cheese pink) with tiny chunks of fish... but get this: it tasted just like cream cheese!!! Not even a HINT of salmon!!!! How is that even possible!? It made me feel like I was eating some genetically mutated batch of pink cream cheese. Gross no thanks! So in short, you're way better off going to Zabars just 6 blocks away on 80th and Broadway. The food is WAY more fresh and authentic, and honestly, a better price and deal. read more

Lovely old style counter with all the appetizing behind solid glass. Which is a good thing. The Nova lox is like eating pink butter. The Sable is moist and tasty. The gefilte fish surprisingly close to my aunts. (Nobody beats hers.) Pickled salmon is delicious. My kids will only eat their half sour pickles. (won't eat anyone else) Everything is top shelf. The owner Ira, a pleasure to talk to.Oscar who has been there forever, speaks spanish, yiddish, hebrew, and probably everything else needed to make you happy.
