Murray's delicious chicken soup with vegetables and noodles.

They were right! FABULOUS chicken soup. I've got a head cold so I was in research mode for good chicken soup in this UWS neighborhood. The Yelp reviews told me to come here. So glad I did. Got the chicken soup with vegetables and noodles. Flavorful as all get out! Paired with a Zabar's butter croissant, this is what I call "comfort food "! Also, Murray's is CLASSIC spot. The gentlemen behind the counter are so great. Pure UWS welcome. And the other customers there were great, too. They've been coming for years. Good to be an UWSider in NYC!

I'm surprised I only recently learned about this place since it's been around forever (and you can tell when you walk into the shop)! I knew I had to try their whitefish salad sandwich to start. It doesn't taste like any other whitefish salad I've had before; it was on the sweeter side. It wasn't bad just not what I'm used to. I had asked what bread they recommend to get it in, figuring maybe one type is known to be better than the others but was told "whichever you prefer," I got it on a bagel which was okay. My coworker gave me several recommendations - egg salad, vegetarian chopped liver and the pea soup. I've got no complaints about any of them! The pea soup was sold out on my first visit so I went back specifically to try this. It is a good soup but you've got to like onions because there's a lot of them in it! The vegetarian chopped liver was surprisingly good, not sure what exactly it's made of though.

I came down with an unspecified viral illness earlier this year which knocked me out for a solid week, and all I could muster the energy and appetite for was soup. I've had some great chicken soup uptown before (Salento in Washington Heights is amazing), but now that I've moved to the UWS, I was adrift once again. Some googling and yelping steered me toward Murray's Sturgeon Shop, so one day, I wrested myself from my sickbed and walked down to pick myself up some soup. The store is somewhat intimidating, as nothing is really laid out and you have to order everything over the counter, but I was able to convey my order pretty easily, and not long after, I had a frozen quart of chicken noodle soup in my possession. I guess they only sell their soups frozen, but they assured me it is frozen at peak freshness. It was $15 for the frozen quart, which felt kinda steep, but I justified it, because it could last multiple meals. I came out and let my frozen block defrost for a bit before I melted it on the stovetop. It took a while for the ice crystals to melt away, but soon enough, the warm and umami aroma of chicken soup began to emanate from my pot and penetrate my stuffed up olfactories. My frozen block made two portion of delicious soup, stuffed full of shredded chicken, carrots, and curly egg noodles. The best word I can use to describe the flavor of this soup is incredible DEPTH. Soup is not a good I often rave over, but this one is particularly good and flavorful. It cured me, just a little. Highly recommend when you're ill and craving your mother's cooking/comfort, but you're actually a grown adult who thousands of miles away from your childhood home so you just have to shell out $15 for someone else's grandma to make soup and sell you a frozen block of it. I haven't tried their fish, but based on the other reviews, I'm curious about it! Nothing in the store looked particularly nice or clean (it just looked a little musty as old delis often do), and like I mentioned, the counter is somewhat intimidating, but Murray's has the vibe of an old time establishment that knows what they're doing and does it well.

I had the classic Tonkatsu Ramen, with an egg - The pork ws seared and still so tender! The broth was very flavorful. My husband has a salmon rice bowl, and he loved it. He said the fish was cooked perfectly! We started with veggie gyoza, and they do them in a very interesting way. Very flat and all fried together. We were surprised when they brought them, but they were awesome! we were. fan of this style almost immediately! The waiter gently recommended the pork gyoza (his preference) but not everyone at the table eats meat, so we stayed with the vegetable. The restaurant is a small cozy place that's great for a date night. The ramen itself was good. It wasn't very spicy despite me ordering the spicy beef ramen. However that's usually the case for all ramen places. The broth was delicious which I finished every last drop of. Again, the meal was very delicious. It wasn't a memorable bowl of ramen but I have no complaints. The ingredients were great and it had good flavor. It's definitely one of the better spots in the neighborhood. I could recommend this location for a date night over the other ramen establishments in the area. Again, there's no shortage of choices.

It was our first time eating at a Friedman's location. It had a nice diner feel to it, with a mix of booths and tables. The brunch menu has a variety of breakfast items, salads, sandwiches and burgers, starters, and entrees (fish tacos, grain bowl, fried chicken). I like that several of the items are naturally gluten free, and some can be made gluten free by request. We decided to go with three breakfast items from the brunch menu: I got the shakshuka, my sister got the Nova Benny, and we got the lemon ricotta pancakes to share. All 3 dishes were great. The shashuka came with grilled ciabatta, perfect for dipping into the sunny side eggs and tomato sauce. My sister loved that the poached eggs and smoked salmon of the Nova Benny came on top of a crispy potato latke. The pancakes were fluffy and the lemon ricotta and lemon zest elevated their flavor. Our server was friendly and attentive, and he asked us if we had any allergies when he took our order. He came by several times to check on us and refill water. I would return to Friedman's when I'm in the Herald Square area, or check out one of their other locations in the city.

One of the things I really liked about the restaurant is the individual booth concept. You order easily at the front, and once seating is available, they call you in. There's also a code board in the front room that lights up red or green to indicate whether seating is unavailable or available. Be prepared for a long wait, though. My party and I ended up waiting in the rain before we could get seated. That said, the food did not disappoint. The menu is pretty limited, so you don't have many options to choose from, especially if you're vegetarian. The noodles were cooked perfectly--chewy with a nice bounce. The broth was rich yet surprisingly light, and the pork was incredibly tender, practically melting in your mouth. The presentation is minimalist, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, considering the price, I would have liked to see more sides or additional options included with the meal. The individual booth setup is also an interesting experience. Since you have your own private space, nobody bothers you while you eat. When your food is ready, the blind in front of you is raised, your meal is handed to you, and then the curtain drops back down. Overall, it's a unique dining experience with delicious ramen, but the high price and long wait are definitely things to consider before visiting.

Got off the E train and when we looked for Chinese food, this place popped up with good reviews and it was just a short walk from where we got off the train. My buddies ordered the special lunches and we also got two types of xlb's, beef chow fun, and some fried dumplings. The special lunches come with a little fried rice, cold garlic flavored noodle, choice of egg drop or hot and sour soup, and main side. My buddies all enjoyed their meals. The beef chow fun was also really good and beef was nice and tender. The xiao long baos were excellent and is comparable to any place in California like DTF. Nice and juicy and great with some ginger, soy sauce, and spicy chili. Friendly service and food comes out pretty quickly. Credit card is accepted. I missed a call and literally two minutes later the call came through again and the woman yelled at me - "hurry up hurry up, hurry up, hurry up!" said the driver was waiting 10-15 minutes for me, which was simply untrue - I got a call literally two minutes before- just rude. Added a screenshot in case the owner doubles down that it was 15 mins. Guess the first call was from the delivery driver, and the second was from the restaurant itself. ‍ But the really disappointing part is that they didn't pack any soup separate from the noodles! - So my chicken dumpling noodle soup basically had no soup - don't know if they forgot it or if it was absorbed by the noodles but most restaurants at this point know to pack the broth and the noodles separately,- so I ended up having to add some of my own vegetable broth, which totally was not the flavor I was hoping for. So - love the food, but delivery service leaves a lot to be desired - next time I'll try giving instructions to pack the soup separate from the noodles and see if that helps!
