Old school charm and superb smoked fish. Clearly they are not Russ and Daughters - the younger generation of ownership has not gotten involved to their detriment. The smoked fish swillers of the UWS have moved on to Fairway and stayed true to Zabars, but I would still strongly recommend the Nova, Scotch Salmon and Baked Salmon - really and truly high quality. The rest of the output is questionable in appearance as many of the salads (cucumber, chopped liver, whitefish, etc.) looks like they suffer from lack of turnover. I sincerely hope this store hangs on and stays around for another 100 or so years, but unless they see investment both financially and emotionally from new blood, the prognosis is dim. 5 stars sometimes is not enough for an establishment and that's certainly the case for Murray's Sturgeon Shop. We just moved to the area but have already been here over a dozen times. This is a place to get honest food, excellent service in a clean and friendly environment. This is true gem in the UWS. Our fridge is always stocked with their fluffy tuna salad, quarts of borscht and other soups like their potato leek and split pea. We always get some sliced pastrami and of course, lox and smoked fish and bagel chips. Service is always nice and every order is accurate. Each person takes great care in putting your order together and it's one of the few places that truly appreciate your business. This is a special place - you must try it :) read more

Food was okay. BUT ... I ordered a smoked salmon "sandwich" and a sturgeon "sandwich", both on plain bagels (in addition to other items). Each "sandwich" contained at most 2 ounces (i.e., 1-2 thin slices) of fish. The charge for the two "sandwiches" and a total of 3, maybe 4, ounces of fish was $32.70. That is obscene price gouging! I will not order online from Murray's again unless they make a point of providing a fair return for the prices being charged. read more

This place is really, really bad. When I unwrapped the sable, a foul stench consumed the house, and my wife asked me immediately to throw it away. I took one nibble and on reflex spit it out. The chopped herring was dessicated and flavorless. And the gravlax was oily and unevenly seasoned. I ended up throwing all the fish away. You can read my other reviews: I love smoked fish and know the strong taste and smell that comes with it. But this was different - it smelled and tasted bacterial. Of course, I wasn't expecting Russ & Daughters or even Zabars, but I was expecting fresh fish. I should have walked out without ordering. What kind of Jewish deli doesn't sell cream soda. Even more embarassing was that i ordered fish from a place whose cream cheese is from Philadelphia - Philadelphia brand cream cheese. Never again. read more

When I was a teenaged boy, I use to walk by this place on the way to school, and laugh; it seemed so anachronistic, and what i wanted then was a good slice of pizza...which was about what i could afford. The old Jewish guys that worked there were not exactly kid friendly in 1971, either. I wish i had been more of a fresser (glutton) then. Every single thing i have had at murray's has been amazing, and i rarely use that word. The food tastes like memories of food i never even had before but should have. And i am now a fresser. Try the Schav, Borscht, and drink them both cold, in a small glass, not a bowl. Herring in sour cream, Rugelach, and of course the smoked fish. You wont get sturgeon or sable like this anywhere else, ok, except a few places in the city, or montreal, or toronto. the sturgeon is expensive, but have it at least once in your life, and dream sturgeon dreams the rest. Have the sturgeon with cream cheese on a bialy, not a bagel. Ach, don't be such a poyer (peasant). I would, though, if you have the time, get the bagels at B & H. That could be where Murray's gets theirs, but water is always freshest at the source. read more

Here's why: Thanks to the excellent taste of those who hosted a sudden funeral (my cousins), multitudes of those paying condolence calls were satiated after a long, dreary day. This is the reason we live on the Upper West Side. Murray's is the kind of place that makes you happy. There's a very strong mix of high-quality "elsewhere made" smoked fish and appetizing counter stuff alongside some really good items "homemade" at/for the shop. What they buy in from outside is clearly edited for quality, and the way they prepare it is outstanding. The counter guys put so much effort into ensuring that the fish you're buying is trimmed perfectly, and that you won't be eating or paying for any part that's less than the best. Anywhere else, that's not going to happen. Service is really friendly and thoughtful, offering suggestions but not being unpleasantly aggressive. In this neighborhood, the choice is between Barney Greengrass and Murray's. I go with Murray's. read more

Walking into this store is like taking a time machine back to 1965. The decor and the merchandising seem unchanged since I first visited the store in the late 1980's. At some point, about 10-15 years ago, they added kosher deli meats, but otherwise the store is unchanged. The distinguishing feature is the fish cutting. You always get meticulously sliced fish - with the sable trimmed to remove the dark area near the spine and the salmon in paperback sized slices. Many stores ruin good product with bad knifesmanship. At Murray's the countermen have major skills. The salads are also good, particularly the smoky whitefish salad and savory spinach and egg. Old fashioned pickled lox catches your eye. For me, the sturgeon and sable have become special occasion items, but the salmon is reasonably priced. The Scottish, sampled most recently, had a fine smoky flavor and was not greasy. If you can afford the sturgeon, well the place is called Murray's Sturgeon Shop for a reason. $24 Groupon barely made a dent at Murray's. Virtually everything is quoted by 1/4 lb, and the Groupon cant be used on any smoked fish. Here is what I got: White fish salad: homemade, chunky white fish, and a bit on the sweet side, chopped liver, also homemade and chunky with bits of egg: good but at almost $20 a lb?? Although I have always liked the nova at Murray's, unfortunately I have to give a bad review now. I was visiting a friend in Maine and wanted to provide a weekend brunch for my host. I sent in an online order for about $200 worth of smoked fish and bagels. When the order didn't arrive on the Friday before the weekend, I called Murray's and was told that the website never transmitted the order to the shop. He kind of suggested that the fault was mine and made no effort to correct their error--no attempt to make a Saturday delivery, no apologies, no nothing. They have lost one customer. read more

Five stars for the regular Nova lox. I can absolutely attest that this is the best place to come elevate your Sunday brunch menu. The Nova lox are smoked and cut to perfection (ask for a sample, but only if you are going to buy). The staff know their product is amazing, and so do the patrons. Eh. Just eh. The Sturgeon did not look good so I didn't buy it. I had some of the Whitefish, while adequate it was hardly transcendent and it was very expensive. Service is spotty. There is something really disconcerting about cans of Pringle's Potato Chips on the counter of a place like this. Doesn't fit. I think the Cucumber Salad was sitting there for a while. Ordering is very slow and very tedious. Yentas with large lists ordering one thing at a time, droning on and on. I don't get it. I'll go to Zabar's or Russ and Daughters. I don't know if it is because I live in Philadelphia and you just can't get food as good as this here. You just can't. The chopped liver is to die for. Well that's not nice to say, but I could sit there and spoon feed myself the whole container. The lox melts in your mouth and the herring in cream sauce with onions, oh.......................if I lived on the street where my brother lives I would have a big problem with less money and more weight. I did not visit the store myself (Good thing) or more would have been purchased. Next visit watch out. I know another yelp member had a problem back in 2009 with the sable. Well next visit, that will be something I will look into as sable is such a delicious delicacy. Please note this place is not for the faint of heart. Right now lox is going for $40 a pound. I've been going to Murray's for 25 years or more and I can tell you that their smoked fish surpasses Zabars, Barney Greengrass and Fairways. First, the staff all know how to slice the fish, which is becoming a lost art. Second, they know how to produce a consistent product, each fish is perfect. Third, their other food offerings are incredibly good as well. Their sable is the best anywhere. If you haven't had sable, try it. It is more subtle than lox, and has an incredible velvety texture. Their Eastern nova is superb; you can get cheaper by going to Broadway Farms, but it won't be as good. Pickled lox is hard to find, theirs is great. They also have three kinds of herring - you have to go to Russ & Daughters for a better selection. the schmaltz herring is fantastic. The whitefish is good, but honestly, the stuff at Costco is good too and 1/3 the price- and that includes the whitefish salad. Their soups are surprisingly good. Only my Mother makes better cold borscht and the schav is fantastic on a hot summer's day. The egg salad, spinach egg salad, tuna salad, and chopped chicken livers are all fresh and delicious. Finally, my kids think that their rugelach is the best in New York. So check it out - this is a serious old time smoked fish place. read more
