TLDR; Old school skeezy used car salesman with a heinous shop/mechanic uses cheapest parts available and lies in his online ads. Let me save you the read: - Photos in online ads are not actually the car you're buying. - NEVER use MyCarGuy-SF.com for a remote purchase. - Think hard before working in person with Dave Sutch / MyCarGuy-SF. - DO NOT let his shady mechanic touch or inspect/vouch for any car. - DO NOT let Dave Sutch / MYCARGUY-SF guilt you into the "warranty he already prepaid when the previous buyer fell through." Here's the story. I was deployed in the middle east during the summer / fall of 2021. Needed reliable transportation when I got home and found Dave Sutch / MyCarGuy-SF selling a low mile car that he raved about. I was skeptical, but reliable used / new cars were impossible to find in SoCal in the short window available to figure out reliable transportation. After reading his yelp & google review history and giving him a mulligan for Daniel P's 1 star write-up I decided to give him a call. While I discussed the car with him, he came off as very forthright and open about the condition as well as some minor flaws he didn't want me to be surprised by. He even took $500 off the asking price to repair a dent in the car that wasn't shown in the photos. Things were going swell! We agreed on the price and I got wiring instructions from his dealership. That's when he slipped in the cherry about the "warranty he already prepaid for another customer who fell through" and then casually mentioned that the warranty would be on top of the full price offer we'd already agreed on for the car. In hindsight, I should have run as fast as I could in the other direction at the first sign of his old school shyster car salesman tricks, but again, I had one hour a day to find a reliable car to support me once I got home and so many reviews come across as positive and glowing. Maybe they're fake, who knows. I didn't run,...Dave's depiction of the flawless car, his attestation of how good the workmanship of his personal mechanic was and the fact that he'd personally driven the car over 600 miles all won me over. Skeezy Dave's top 4. 1. Right as I finalized the wire to him for the purchase he casually mentioned there was a "little yellow paint" on the engine cover he hadn't been able to clean off yet and that he'd used a stock photo of the engine compartment in his ad. The truth is that the engine compartment was trashed & no one would ever have bought this car if he'd used a real photo of the engine, which was way beyond "a little cleanup". Looks like someone put a can of silver spray paint in a kindergartener's left hand and a can of yellow spray paint in their right hand, then blindfolded the poor kid then and left them alone with the motor until the cans were empty. Also, while trying to figure out who did what to the engine I came across some real quality workmanship by his mechanic.... all the engine mounts were wrapped in multiple layers of electrical tape to keep vibrations down. (if you're not a car guy/gal, electrical tape is not the preferred method of fixing engine mounts). The brand new replacement struts and springs they installed are so cheap that to keep the car from bottoming out we are going to need to replace the entire suspension AGAIN. 2. The car showed up a week late, filthy and covered in grime/pet hair. Gross! 3. After sending the money to his dealer account, we started working through the title details. That's when he mentioned that the vehicle had actually been titled in his name (not as a dealer) so it would come across as a direct transfer but the whole thing should be transparent to me. Here I am past the point off no return, money's in his account and suddenly the details are changing (surprise!). Not a big deal until i let him know about the problems we were having with the car, and our disappointment with his dealership. Suddenly it was a "private sale," not subject to CA buyer protections. 4. After about 50 miles of driving it was pretty apparent this car had transmission issues, turns out this is known issue for the model and a simple fix IF YOU DON"T LIE ABOUT IT AND HIDE IT. On our first drive as a family it broke down in downtown SD, then we had to limp-mode it home on the 5 to the OC. This is when I learned about what a shitty warranty Dave sells. For $1900 dollars, the warranty company provides up to 7k of coverage. Of that, up to 2k can be used for transmission repairs. Rebuilt transmission on this car? 3.5k. Labor to remove / reinstall? another 1.5-2k (verified with a Volvo dealer and an independent mechanic. So best case the warranty will leave you with an out of pocket expense of 2.5k on a transmission. NOT WORTH IT! I've had the car six weeks now, it's been in the shop over 5. $7k of work to fix. Dave Sutch / MyCarGuy-SF.com are unwilling to work with us in any way ...no support whatsoever. Don't repeat my mistake, Stay Away :) read more

Um, I am never buying a car alone again. We stumbled upon Dave after googling "Can't I hire someone to just negotiate with the car dealers for me?" Surprise, the answer is yes, yes you can. Once we knew the type of car and trim we wanted (2018 Audi Q5, Premium Plus), but I wasn't excited to spend hours and hours calling around and negotiating with sales people. We tried True Car, but a lot of the offers we were getting were still thousands over MSRP. Not to mention the hounding via text, email, and phone calls desperate to get us to buy our car with their dealer. Enter Dave. He found the car + trim offerings we wanted and he got the whole deal locked down in one afternoon. He connected us to a wholesaler who gave us a better price our trade-in than the dealer would. When we were signing paperwork they said to us, "We would offer you more, but you got such an aggressive price on the car, we can't afford to lose any more money on this deal." Which was comforting to hear. Our car buying experience simply involved strolling into the dealer, signing some paperwork and walked out two hours later with our new car. It was well worth Dave's fees, and I doubt we'll ever work without him again. read more

After being back in the market for a vehicle, I was excited to contact Dave from "My Car Guy".. Despite the stellar reviews I had read here, he was ultimately not able to deliver on my requested car after nearly a month of correspondence with him. Being a college student, I was in the market for something cheap, fuel-efficient, and moderately responsive. I email him my inquiry for the vehicle with most of the specs I'm looking for and along with some means of assuring the quality and condition of the vehicle. He then responds by requesting my desired maximum price and mileage (which I forgot in the first email) and gives me an explanation of his services, his information network for acquiring vehicles which allegedly allowed him to purchase his vehicles far below NADAGuides values, and business warranty. In addition to this, he requested that I pay for the vehicle in cash. I responded by stating my maximum of $5,000 for an all cash purchase and 120k miles and was thrilled to read that the document he sent me claiming that he could acquire my vehicle for less than NADAGuide value; which was less than half of my maximum. He sends me a post for the vehicle I'm searching for from his network of sellers; this particular vehicle is moderately damaged with a few bends on at least one of the body panels, the back side window broken and ready to fall off, and a huge crack running across what seemed to be the entirety of the width of the windshield. For this vehicle, he requested that I wire him $6,700 as well as some additional unknown amount for service fees and that it must be done within a few days otherwise I would need to wait until next week to further correspond with him since he was going to be out of town for an entire week for some unknown reason. I express to him that I'm not terribly excited about purchasing this vehicle and would like to wait to see what else he can come up with for me. Several more emails later he responds by saying that I had not given him my maximum for miles and dollars yet (even though I had in my first response email indicating he had not read it thoroughly) as well as sending me an admittedly very interesting and moderately extensive report from his car network indicating that the projected average sale price for the vehicle I was looking for the following month would be $3,600; a full $1,400 less than my maximum. I was elated. I tell him that I'm willing to wait another month to secure the projected price in order to pay for the vehicle in cash as well as cover any additional service fees he may charge me. He responds by telling me securing that price would be very difficult and that I would need an additional $2,000 to be able to "comfortably" secure the vehicle and that $5,000 was a "low-ball offer". If I had an extra $2,000 in cash, I would have no need to request his services and could just purchase the vehicle almost immediately from a dealership. Have we really reached a point in American history where offering $5,000 cash for an 8 year-old commuter Honda coupe is considered a "low-ball offer"..? Times sure have changed! What a milestone. So after about a month of these emails, he finally tells me he's given up looking and cannot help me. Judging from previously posted reviews, it seems he reserves his greatest efforts only for a certain demographic (likely only those with a fair amount of spare cash, but I'm not entirely sure). My guess is; unless you have enough cash to purchase your desired vehicle from a dealership, I think attempting to purchase from "My Car Guy" will be a fairly abrasive experience for you. As for me, I'm heading back into the wilderness to search for my car and a reputable, reliable seller. Keep me in your prayers. read more

I read great reviews, so I called Dave as I'm in the market for a station wagon for my growing family. I had a fairly negative experience. First, I experienced him as fairly surly and gruff--this is something I'm willing to overlook if he delivers on what he says he's going to (i.e., close to wholesale pricing and in the timeframe I need). This is the person, who when I sent him examples of car listings, I got a one line responses that literally read (and this is copied directly from my email): "I still have two people in front of you; can't respond to this" I had the feeling that he felt he was doing me a favor and that I needed to wait my turn. Not the customer experience I typically seek. Second, he reneged on when he would be able to start working on my search. When I first gladly handed over my retainer, he did say that he wouldn't be able to get to my search for 5-7 business days, which I appreciate and respect. However, after 10 business days, I emailed to check in with him on status, and he said that he didn't recall giving me that timeframe and said that he was sending me my retainer money back. On a positive note, my impression is that he knows what he's doing--he seems quite insightful about the car business and appears well connected, but I never really got a chance to find out. read more

Do not purchase a vehicle through My Car Guy, Dave Sutch, unless you have the opportunity to inspect the vehicle prior to purchase. As an auto dealer, I expect Dave has access to sale inventories that you don't, but that advantage comes at a cost. At least a portion of his business is to buy vehicles, sight unseen, with his client's money, making the purchase himself and then transferring the sale to you. In my experience, he will then take no responsibility for that purchase should there be a problem. You would be better off buying the vehicle sight unseen yourself because you may have recourse against the seller if the vehicle is misrepresented. When you buy from My Car Guy, you are assuming all of the risk and forgoing any protections the law may provide you from a misrepresented sale. In my case, Dave purchased, then sold me a vehicle that obviously did not match the sales description and he was unwilling to challenge his purchase or refund my money. I spent $18,600 on a vehicle that several body shops have since quoted at least $15,500 for rust repair. When I picked up the vehicle it was immediately obvious that there was far more rust on the vehicle than advertised. There's no way I would have bought the vehicle if I had had the opportunity to see it first. Both Dave's expertise and his network failed me. Why did I make this purchase? My wife met Dave through a business networking group many years ago. He sold himself as a vehicle broker with purchasing expertise and wide connections in the auto industry, who specializes in finding the right vehicle for people. He quickly found a vehicle that fit our needs in Pennsylvania. I'm in California. I made the purchase, sight unseen, with reservations that were dispelled by his claims of trustworthiness, the value of this extraordinary deal (quote: "I'll buy this myself if you don't") and his assurance that the vehicle would be inspected by a reputable entity before the purchase. However, once my money was transferred and the purchase made, problems surfaced. Dave told me that I would need to pick the vehicle up in Pennsylvania posing as his employee. Somehow the vehicle was no longer at the dealership that had advertised it, but was now in the hands of a used car wholesaler, which also turned out to be the inspector. (The purchase was made in Dave's name and only he, or someone working for him, could receive it as they required a licensed dealer to claim it). I drove the vehicle off the lot and across the street to look it over and immediately saw that there was far more rust on the vehicle than was described or pictured in the advertisement. I found myself standing outside of the wholesaler's lot having purchased a falsely advertised vehicle, with no recourse against the seller, without even the right to purchase from them. Months have passed and Dave refuses to take any responsibility for this bad purchase and sale nor has he looked at the vehicle or the pictures I've sent showing the extent of the rust. He did offer to help sell the vehicle as long as I provided him photos that hid the extent of the rust problem, so that he could perhaps sell the vehicle to you. I chose not to take him up on his offer. After consulting lawyers, I've come to understand that I have very little chance of getting any compensation from him. Vehicles of this age (2004) are sold "as is" and Dave has never laid eyes on the vehicle, so he cannot be accused of intentionally misrepresenting the sale. My Car Guy, Dave Sutch, took on no risk. I've bought 2 cars from Dave, an Audi A4 Avant, and a Subaru Impreza Sport (both stick, thus harder to find). Both transactions have been the smoothest I've ever had plus I saved money. Who ever heard of a win-win situation when purchasing a car? In between buying my two cars, I leased a Jetta TDI (also stick, so probably harder to sell) without Dave's help (afterwards, I learned that I should have done it through him). The car needed some cosmetic work and Dave hooked me up with a great body work guy (LC Auto Polish & Body Work). When I went to pick up the car, LC suggested I could make a profit by buying out the lease and selling it instead of turning in the lease (VW would have probably found something additionally wrong with the car and charged me), and that he knew a broker that would handle everything. It turns out that broker was Dave! Anyway, I bought out the lease and let Dave handle everything, and even with his fee, I turned a profit that more than covered the body work I did. I think that constitutes a win-win-win. The plan is to give my Impreza to one of my kids in a couple of years, so when I'm back in the market for another car, gee, who do you think I'll use? I've seen the less-than-positive reviews mentioning he's gruff. I'll take gruff, honest, and me saving money over the alternative any day of the week. read more

I would recommend Dave over some of the local dealerships I've had to deal with hands down. He didn't pressure me when I was thinking about buying my car. I didn't even have to ask him to test drive the vehicle; he offered to hop in with me and had me go through a predetermined route through SF that allowed me to test the vehicle's handling in a variety of conditions, like the highway and a street that was riddled with potholes. I honestly felt like I could trust the guy, and it was rewarding to see the level of trust he placed in me as a customer: I was able to take the vehicle down to a mechanic to get it inspected prior to the purchase; we even agreed that I'd drive the vehicle back to my home and return to his office the next day with my check in hand (not a typical scenario mind you). That was probably the kicker for me. I'm somewhat young, and I look younger, and my experience with other dealers is that they either don't care/ don't give you the time of day because they assume you have no money if they don't see parents around or they treat you like a criminal - like if they give you the keys to their car, that you'll drive away with it (one dealer was visibly anxious, and then audibly breathed a sigh of relief after he learned about the kind of work I do i.e. payment was no longer an issue). Frankly, from my perspective, I think it's really rude, and it makes for a terrible purchasing experience. Used car salesmen have a bad wrap, but I wouldn't throw Dave in the same category. Again, he's trustworthy, nice, professional, and courteous (even offering to drive my registration down earlier during the week as I needed to have the car shipped within several weeks). He doesn't sell lemons (in fact, his wife drove my car several weeks before, as a testament to that fact) - something that the mechanics who inspected the car can attest to as well. Also, he gives you a fair deal. If you want a no-hassle, and relatively positive car purchasing experience, I'd recommend him. PS. I love my Accord! read more

I called Dave a couple weeks ago looking for the a 'unicorn' of a car. It had to be the perfect Audi A4. Not just one that was well equipped, but one that had virtually everything, in the perfect color, with the perfect S-Line package... Oh, and it had to be a screaming deal too... When I needed a used pick-up truck, I had very specific (perhaps demanding?) criteria: bed liner, ladder rack, hydrolic lift on the rear gate, low milage, V-8). They found me a used Ford F150 with all that I wanted and delivered it in the rain to my business office after 6 pm one evening. The truck had 12k miles on it and was in great shape - all for a price I could not have been bothered to have shopped it. They handled all the paperwork, details, etc. What a relief to do business with someone that knows his stuff and has a passion for the industry! Dave knows all the fleet managers of all the regional automobile manufacturers and is on a first name basis with the people that matter. He took the time to understand what I wanted and he has been the sole reason I have had such great experiences using his firm. I have known MyCarGuy since they started in SF. The owner, Dave, has been an automobile broker for more than 20 years and he knows not only how to get you a great deal, but he is a wealth of information about where to go to get detailing done, parts, painting services, etc. I can not say enough good about Dave and the work he has done for me. read more

Dave is The Man. I'm a little concerned if he puts as much effort into every car search as he put into mine - he reported that he knew the search was complete when he was dreaming about it - but I got the ride of my life out of his efforts, way beyond what I had any right to expect, and it would not have been possible for me to come close on my own - I would not have even thought to try for the perfect 10. Working with Dave is a no-brainer. He'll help you narrow your search, and once you know what you want, he is a fierce ally getting it for you at an incredible price even once you've factored in his fee and any necessary shipping (if it's a used car). Mine came from Arizona - the decision was easy thanks to the options and research he unearthed on my part. Living in San Francisco for my adult life, I hardly even liked cars anymore, but this was a great move and I am appreciating this one every time I get in it - I don't even drive that much, which in this day and age helped justify (since you're no doubt wondering): Dodge Charger SRT8, fully loaded. I worked with Dave primarily by email (I'm in MN) for a few months as I dipped my toes into and out of and into the car market. He was great. Always patient and responsive. We eventually realized a new Honda Pilot would be less expensive than a used one (to Dave's credit he tried to convince me of this from the start). While he was able to get great deals I CA, I still would have had to pay for and wait for the car to be shipped. I eventually asked if he could get the same deal on MN. He didn't hesitate to try and within 24 hours found me a screaming deal (thousands off MSRP) at a dealer 10mi from my house. I've already passed his name on to two friends who are in the market. I was looking for an auto broker to consign a car I had for sale-I had never been through that process before. I looked at yelp reviews and gave Dave a call. I remembered I had met Dave at a function a few years ago. We arranged for me to bring the car in within a few days to have a look. When I met him, he took the car right then; I wasn't prepared, but I did it anyway wanting to get the process started. He was immediately ready to get started on the process of selling my car and felt he could sell it for more than I thought. The short answer is, he did. He had suggestions of what to do to make it more marketable and I followed his lead. They were great suggestions and I am glad I did them. He coordinated the smog test, repairs and detailing and had it sold within a week; then he deposited the proceeds for me at my bank. He knows what he is doing and he just does it. My only frustration in the process was that I am more of a need to know, blow by blow kind of guy. When I had specific questions, I didn't feel like I got clear answers. For instance, I didn't understand that one of the documents actually signed the car over to him! In the end, he did what he said and I was very happy with the result. When I asked for documentation, he provided it. I would refer him and work with him again, now knowing how he works. read more

Dave helped me sell my car on consignment while out was out of the country. The experience with Dave from the get go was honest and upfront. Once in possession of the car, he found several issues that would make it harder to sell and was able to have the work done via his connections for much less than I could have done on my own. It took a couple of months to sell, and all through the process, Dave was very communicative via email and phone, never did I have to wonder what was going on, and I always felt like he was on my side. Once the car was sold, Dave quickly sent me the balance of the proceeds via wire transfer without hassle. I consider myself somewhat of a car nut (as do my family and friends), but was having trouble selling a car that my dad had left to me upon his death, despite its being a popular car with very low mileage. I read all the favorable reviews of Dave's service on Yelp and saw that he's Diamond Certified, so gave him a call. He gave me some valuable tips on preparing the car for sale and did some thoughtful brainstorming about pricing it. Within a week of my delivering the car to Dave, he called to say that he'd found a buyer (in Wyoming of all places!). I accepted the offer, and just like that, the car was sold! I realized more on the sale than I anticipated, and the buyer got a good deal as well. Dave really knows his stuff and delivers on his promises! For a couple years, I was looking for a nice old pickup. In two hours after contacting My Car Guy, he identified one. Later that day, I owned it. Couple days later, I drove it home. The truck was in Texas. Not surprisingly, there are more pickups in Texas than the Bay Area, and the law of supply and demand worked in my favor -- even with car transport fees. Looking in Texas never occurred to me, and even if it had, I would not have been able to execute on it. The 45-year-old truck is in great shape, and I feel like I got a very good buy. Dave knows cars (and trucks), and was able to steer me (so to speak) toward a vehicle I really like. He managed all the details of transport and registration. First, he suggested I buy a used car from him--not the kind that I wanted; in fact, wasn't even close. Then his call waiting beeped, and he told me he had to go--clearly, I wasn't that important--and that I should look at the used car on his web site and then call him back. Why would I do that? Instead, I found another broker who listened to what I wanted and could handle returning phone calls. (Her name: Ioanna Stergaides at Bay Area Hand Picked Cars). I was looking to buy my first car and as I am not an American did not have anybody to help me. I wanted a very particular make, model and transmission. So, I found David on Yelp and asked him to help. He didn't have too many clients at the moment (August 2013), so I was lucky to get his full attention for a little while. I am not sure whether he didn't want really to do anything or my task wasn't interesting, or a "better" client came up, but in my humble opinion he doesn't deserve the money he got from me. Before I asked David to find the car for me, I was looking for the car myself already for a couple of months on-line. But I didn't find what I was looking for yet. At the beginning of August I was about to leave country for vocation when I got an e-mail from one of the dealerships that they had the car like I wanted, but it was getting ready for sale and wasn't offered for sale yet. I e-mailed that info to David and asked him to check the car out and he said he'll do the check. So, I went happily on vocation. I can bet money if I didn't e-mail him that info he would not do a thing until I would come back and by that time the car would be long gone... While I was still on vocation he e-mails me to go urgently to the dealership and buy the car and I even didn't come back to the country yet! So, as soon as I got back two days later I asked him to slow down and go with me and see the car with me at least! He refused to go and said that I could go and look at it by myself and for him it'll be a waste of time. Of course I could not go there because I don't have a car to go there in a first place! And using public transportation it took me 2h to get there when I went to actually buy the car. So, to get out of the job he forced (he refused to look for the car for me because:1. he was leaving to Monterrey for a car show; 2. he had other clients waiting in line; 3. he doesn't want to do it anymore) me blindly agree to buy the car and give him money for his "work". I am not going to perseverate about absence of a minimum respect to a customer. Unlike many of his customers who whote 5 star reviews I am not able or interested to handle "tough love". He might know about cars, but hey! if you do it for 20+ it would be a fraud not to know something... Finally he didn't get ANY price break he claimed he did, I negotiated a little bit myself. And of course since he didn't see the car, he didn't know the car has a beat up rare bumper and broken insert (excuse my ignorance, but I don't know what it is called) between the rare bumper and trunk top which costs about $2500 to repair and he could get me a nice break on a price of the car and five star review from me. I called Dave after seeing all the reviews on Yelp to see if he could find me a used Mini Cooper. Dave was very knowledgeable about cars and clearly knew which year, model and make I should purchased based on my driving behavior. He found a bunch of different cars and walked me through my options to help me find the right fit. He was very prompt in his response and he even found me a great extended warranty for my used mini! There are 2 reasons why he's not getting a 5 star review here. (1) The car he found for me was out of state and he did not warn me on CA taxes for purchasing an out of state car which is higher than buying a used car here in CA (2) he is quite brusque (which I can deal with since he know what he's talking about) but part of the reason I wanted to use his services to buy a car is because I don't know anything about cars, I don't want to deal with a dealer and I wanted someone in my corner to help me get the best value for my money -- I didn't always feel like Dave was approachable and patient..he may have had a lot on his plate but if you're looking for someone to hold you're hand and be patient with the purchase process he may not be your guy. On the other hand if you know exactly what you're looking for and need someone to find it for you -- he's your man. He really knows his stuff. read more

I was looking for a certain car to buy. I spent about a week on various online web sites like CarMax and cars.com but it was taking too much time, and, frankly, when I found one, I could not tell if I was getting a good price or not. So I tried calling Dave, mostly based on his Yelp reviews. I had never used a car broker before. We talked for a while on the phone, so that he could get a sense of what I was looking for. Then he immediately found a great car at a broker's auction. The price was great. He said he needed me to wire him money to his business bank account so that he could buy this car for me at the auction. I had never done anything like this before, and to be honest, I was a bit nervous about doing this, but based on my conversations with him, I trusted him -- so I wired the money to his bank account. Next day, he buys the car at the auction, and a few days later, the car arrives on my driveway! Got me a better deal that I could have ever done myself. All along the way, Dave was great. I had a very short window to find a car and Dave was able to bring me options in my price range very quickly. He has access to a great inventory of cars and helps you through the entire process of getting the car approved in California, which being from out of state, was very helpful. The reason I am not giving Dave a 5 is because it sometimes felt as though he was doing me a favor in doing business with me and that I should have my mind made up on everything before calling him. Returned from a 2-year stint abroad with a strong desire for a classic Mercedes roadster, specifically 86-89 560SL. Only 50,000 were ever made, and I hated the 3 most prevalent colours so this would be a challenge! Dave scoured the entire USA and found me one on sale by private owner with 74,000 miles and in fantastic shape for a smidge over $10k, in *Texas*. He organised every aspect of the deal, including shipping, registration and smog. He hooked me up with financing (most banks won't finance a 22 year old car) and gave me a great price on a 100k mile drive-train warranty (again, on a 22 year old car!) plus arranged a PPI in Texas at my request. He even picked me up at the airport for final delivery. I sold my car to Dave a couple of weeks ago and I want to say that I very much appreciate the way he does business. I found him through an internet search and I was very impressed with the great things his other customers had to say about him. His is a style that is shamefully missing from most businesses these days. He is upfront, knowledgeable and very comfortable to deal with.
