After waiting for my sister at the beach because she was eating at My Hero, we decided to try it on our way home! The line was out the door, so you know it's great if people are willing to stand on a line for 10 or so minutes on a hot summer day. I got the Chicken Supreme (a small one) and my fiance got the All American. Although we order smalls, they were by no means small! We each only ate half of our sandwich and got to have lunch the next day too! The sandwiches both had perfectly distributed ingredients. Delicious generous size sandwich was amazing. First time here and it won't me my last you know this place is a good sign when there is a line out the door! But don't worry it moves fast they got it down with their service! I am fighting back tears writing this review. I have never been spoken to like that before in my life. I called to place an order for multiple heroes in hopes of bringing them to a block party. The gentleman on the phone was condescending, aggressive, told me to "stop talking," when I was trying to ask questions about how they might be able to help me. Told me he didn't have time to cut the sandwiches up and asked why I couldn't do it myself. Talked me through "walking into the kitchen, getting a knife, slicing them"...in such a degrading and belittling tone like I was a child. I told him I'd be withdrawing my order because I couldn't tolerate being spoken to like this. I'm angry that I couldn't find braver words in the moment to defend myself and that I allowed him to make me feel so small. If a coworker/boss heard him, I would hope they would have acted on the spot. It truly bordered verbal abuse. I grew up in Bellmore and have long frequented My Hero. It's a family staple. I will gladly never eat a sandwich there again and tell everyone I know that they do not deserve our business anymore. The parking situation is terrible and the lines are very long but it doesn't stop people from coming! They actually take the phone off the hook on Saturdays when it gets too busy - I don't know many businesses in this economy that can afford to do that. Our favorites are the Chicken Club and Roast Beef Melt but you really can't go wrong with any of the heroes! I guarantee that you won't be disappointed. A word of advice: If you can get through, place your order on the phone and pick it up. Skip to the front of the line for phone orders. The bread here is really good. They make a good chicken club, and "The Champ" is their take on an Italian, which is great. The salami and provolone melt is also fantastic. I have had many different hero's here and they are all good. It is a family run place, and they are all nice and helpful, the store closes for 2 or 3 weeks at the end of August. They also make egg sandwiches all day, I have never had one, but they make them all day. The restroom is off the back room, rather small but clean as the employees use it too. One of my personal favorites is "The Champ" with the works, but you can never go wrong with a "Chicken Club" or "Meatball hero." It's not a fancy place by any means, just a neighborhood spot that's hung around a long time and knows what works. I've been coming here for the chicken club since I was in high school. That sandwich, like just about everything at My Hero, is more about the execution than the originality. It's stuff that you've seen before done REALLY well. They do the aforementioned chicken club, parm sandwiches, cold cuts, and anything else you'd expect from a deli. All top-of-the-line, right down to the roll. They also offer the option of getting "The Works" on any sandwich, which consists of lettuce, tomato, onion, salt, pepper, oil, and vinegar. I personally don't go for it as I'm not big on the idea of oil and vinegar on a sandwich, but if you're not like me then it's an even better experience. Portions are big - when they say "large" they are not kidding - and prices are very reasonable. If you're staying there's also the choice of indoor or outdoor tables, which is nice to have on a day with good weather. So what are the downsides? Well, a couple of things that are out of their control. For one, the line at peak times is really long. You can avoid it by calling ahead (and I did plenty of that in high school with my lunch period time constraints), but it can be a bit frustrating. The other problem is that the parking situation is legitimately bad. Ever since they put no parking signs on the side street across Jerusalem, it's been all street parking on Jerusalem (rough) or the tiny lot in the back (don't even bother). And don't even try parking at the neighboring Carvel because that guy defends his parking spots like a mother bear defends her cubs. But these are fairly minor complaints. It's a damn good sandwich, and one that's kept me coming back for years. read more

I love to come here when I'm on Long Island. It's not much to look at with not a lot of seating (some indoor and some outdoor), but it's the bees knees. I usually get a large hero with whole wheat bread, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and oil and vinegar. They really pile on the meat!!!! Half of the hero is sufficient for a meal for me. I think what makes the heroes so good here is the bread and the amount of meat. The bread is so fresh. The meat is so plentiful and delicious. I honestly crave their heroes when I'm not on Long Island. I have heard the chicken cutlets are amazing. The service is also good here. The line can be pretty long most times, but it goes quicker than you think. Try to call ahead (if you can get past the busy signal). If you call ahead you can kind of bypass the line. My Uncle always said this was the best hero in town, and it still is - especially the cold heroes. The Champ (Ham Capicolla, Prosciuttini, Genoa Salami, Provolone with the works) is a gold-standard sandwich perfectly executed. My advice is to stick with the cold sammiches - the meatball parm was near perfect...but the meatballs had no seasoning whatsoever. What would gramma say? My Hero indeed! As a Marylander just here for a visit - it sure seems to me like there's twenty of these places per square mile in this region. So it strikes me that there must be a reason the line is out the door here at 2:30 on a Saturday afternoon (I wonder what it's like after work on Friday??). Just like there must be a reason there are signs everywhere saying the owner of the Carvel store next door will tow you and your hero for parking in his lot. We had The Champ (an Italian sub) and The Bocconcini (a roasted veggie sub, with fresh mozzarella). Both were delicious. About the only thing keeping this place from 5 stars is the "cash only" policy. It's very inexpensive, but I got lucky this time ... and had exactly $1 cash to spare. I'm giving them 4 stars because I've been here before and love this place. Great sandwiches!!! I usually go with the chicken club, they have the freshest cutlets. I ordered one the other day and asked for the works. Although the sandwich was still good I was disappointed they forgot to add the vinegar, salt and pepper. It lacked that My Hero's flavor. Nobody's perfect and hard to find good help. But I was so disappointed considering I drove 15 min out of my way to treat myself that day. Oh well better luck next time. I will continue going.
