After hitting the gym, I was craving a sandwich and stumbled upon My Hero on Yelp. With all the good reviews, I put the destination into my map. It's on a main road and I believe there is parking behind but I snagged a spot along the road and went in. The deli itself has an old school vibe to it. There is no seating inside but there is some outside. It was cold so I devoured my sandwich in the car. I crafted my own hero while my bf ordered the Cuban. Mine had chicken cutlet, pepper jack, lettuce, tomato, pickles and Russian dressing. The weight alone to the subs was insane! And quite frankly if you get a large consider yourself fed for at least two meals. The food was soo fresh, delicious and you can tell they do homemade chicken cutlets which is a huge plus. The Cuban was also really good and unique in flavor! The service is fast and I want to note they only take cash so make sure you have some before stopping in. I've been a customer for decades. It's been my go-to for parties, days at the beach, or just for a quick bite. Unfortunately, under new ownership nearly everything has gone downhill. The bread used to be one of the best I've ever had and now you can barely chew it. The sandwiches are significantly smaller and thinner for the same price. The ingredients and deli meats seem to have changed for the worse also. An 85 degree October day called for a visit to the beach. Lunch on the beach seemed even better. My Hero is located about 1 mile off the Southern State Pkwy, so it was an easy detour while heading to Jones Beach. Arriving during prime lunch time, there were people eating outside and a line inside. While the line was about 10 people long, it seemed to move at a good pace. Sandwiches are offered in 2 sizes, small and large. Let me just say the small is by no means small and at $5.50, its a much better deal than a $5 foot-long. The Champ is an Italian cold cut sandwich; get it with the Works which adds lettuce, tomato, onion, salt & pepper, oil and vinegar. A well made sandwich with high quality ingredients. Delicious. The Chicken Club, was outstanding. Moist chicken cutlets with crispy bacon, lettuce and tomato. I asked for hot sauce to be added and it was amazing. Sandwiches are bursting with ingredients and by no means skimpy in any way. The bread is soft and chewy which makes for quite an enjoyable eating experience. We have been coming here for years... 12 to be exact. Today as running around hubby asked if we could stop in... big mistake!! HUGE MISTAKE!!! When we got home to eat the turkey with lettuce and tomato sandwich we knew immediately that something was very different... first the turkey is now shredded so they can use less... next it was awful. And I mean really really awful. Tasted like old turkey laying around for a few days to many... No flavor at all. Then my hubby took some of his side salad...his words "this is disgusting"!! We then threw it all out. We called our son and asked if by any chance the owner sold since he knows him. Yup he did!! We will not be going back for terrible food and we are now both feeling sick.
