As far as heros go, this place makes a solid one. We went during lunchtime on a Saturday and were met with a line out the door. The line moved steadily though and we placed our order after about 20 minutes. The inside is pretty narrow but did have a few tables that were all occupied by catering orders. Definitely a take out spot unless you can snag one of the three picnic tables outside. CG and I split the chicken supreme and bocconcini on whole wheat heros. I enjoyed both. I was surprised at how soft and fresh the bread was-- sometimes it's all the difference in a sandwich. The chicken in the supreme was seasoned well and tender. The eggplant in the bocconcini was interesting in a good way. The eggplant was not fried but still so good. Both sandwiches had an abundance of the works -- roasted red peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil and vinegar. Subway got nothing on this place. If you think Subway is good then you haven't tried this place. Tried the Chicken Club, Roast Beef Melt, and The Champ. All three were very delicious and just eating half a sub was very filling. These guys don't skimp on the portion sizes and toppings. Looks like a 1930's bungalow in the Catskills but what's inside is the ticket...great, huge old school hero's!! Big long breads overstuffed with meats, cheeses, sauces, etc!! Have extensively ordered the eggplant parm, chicken parm, chicken supreme, etc...they just don't make a bad sammich!! Prices very reasonable for what you get, definitely worth a trip!! No indoor dining but there are some nice parks in the area. read more

If you live in town then mostly everyone will tell you if you want a good hero/sandwich then My Hero is the place to go. I don't think theres one time ive been there when there wasnt at least a small line. And from the outside it doesn't look like much, its wasy to pass and not notice but thats part of the charm of this homey establishment. I personally always get the american and they put a house vinaigrette on their sandwiches (which is delicious) but if you dont want that on your hero make sure to let them know. And it doesn't stop with an array of different types of heroes, they also have great breakfast sandwiches and healthy portions. So if you ever find yourself not just hungry, but HANGRY, then this spot is the perfect remedy. Located directly next door to carvel, its not a place you wanna miss. Highly recommend! read more

I've been here multiple times over my years on the island. I left Queens at 14 and I've been coming here ever since. I've had a few different things on the menu and everything has been amazing. What I usually go with is the chicken club. Coming here on lunch breaks when in high school to meeting up with friends for a bite to eat, my hero has always been there. The staff is super friendly and have been working there forever. They work super fast and are super attentive even when they are packed with people and there's a line out the door (which is very common). If I had to recommend one sandwich that everyone should start off with is the chicken club and put a little bit of hot sauce to just top it off. From there on it's an adventure. I feel like this review is long over due and most people know this placing being so good just by the word of mouth but I'm putting it here online so it can be here forever. When I started my trek over to My Hero I was ready to give them a bad review. My wife and I had just gone to Robert Moses and wanted lunch on the way home. We tried calling in our order here and got a busy signal over and over again. I don't like waiting if I can avoid it and I really don't like having to stand in line if I can avoid it so when I pulled up to this deli and saw a line I was annoyed. I should be making a simple pick up and not dealing with this crowd. The whole ordeal probably took 20 minutes which isn't bad. The wait to order was probably half the battle. They have an interesting system here. The person who takes your order also makes your order. They had 4 or 5 people making sandwiches so sometimes the line stalls as they are all busy. The thing is this place knows what they're doing. The line moves and once they have your order it's out in minutes. The thing about this place is its really busy so you know it's gotta be good. My wife and I got a chicken club and a roast beef melt. We got them both large because it's only a few dollars more. Both sandwiches and 1 soda came out to $20 which is good value. These sandwiches are huge. There are a few tables to eat at but this is more of a to go place. There is a small parking lot in the back, do not park in the carvel parking lot. They make it clear that you will be towed. The chicken club was one of the best deli sandwiches I've ever had. For some reason, all of the elements work together and it's just so delicious. Like I said I wanted to give this place less stars after I couldn't call in my order. This sandwich was so good it demanded 5 stars. The roast beef sandwich was really good but even my wife said the chicken club was better and she never says chicken is better then roast beef. I can't stress enough how much I recommend this chicken club sandwich. This place was really good I just hope next time they pick up the phone on my way over. read more

I am writing this review strictly focused on my experiences at this location within the last couple months, hoping that someone on the management team will read this and consider the feedback productive and fair. As someone who has worked in restaurants for the the last 10 years it becomes second nature for me to walk into any food establishment and quickly assess what it is that keeps a business like this afloat and what I would do to improve the overall hospitality and efficiency of the 10+ team members they have on any given day. I am not an elite Yelper but my experiences here have been worse and worse every time I visit that I have to let everyone know that the hype isn't all it's worked up to be. While I don't expect them to completely change the format of the business I think it is important that they understand that quick take-out food should be exactly that-- quick and painless! The last couple times I have visited I have waited 20-30 minutes from the moment I entered to walk out with my food, even on slower days. Aside from the bread which is always extremely soft and fresh the food quality has taken quite a dip. In addition to the food being plain and average I have noticed major cleanliness and food safety violations that genuinely make me want to give this place up entirely. Dirty counter spaces (where they build the sandwiches) and employees eating their meals while making food for the guests are something I just cannot tolerate. I am giving this place a generous 3 stars due to the fact that I have been coming here for years and have had some really good experiences, unfortunately the bad experiences have heavily outweighed the good ones. I'm a regular @ My Hero because they make THE BEST Bacon, Egg 'n Cheese Hero hands down! For Mother's Day, we ordered 1/2 trays of Penne Alla Vodka, Chicken Francaise, Stuffed Rolled Eggplant & Sausage and Peppers. Believe me when I tell you, ALL were ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! The chicken francaise had a very nice lemony sauce and was lightly breaded. The penne had the right amount of vodka sauce and was perfectly al dente! The eggplant was stuffed w/ ricotta and topped w/ a very flavorful sauce and mozzarella cheese. The sausage and peppers was another winner!! They used plump, sweet sausage that 'snapped' when you bit into it (casing). It was also in a delicious tomato sauce along w/ green peppers. For catering, I know where to go from now on. Easily four-and-a-half stars. My Hero is the best Sandwich spot in Nassau County. Many frequenters will rave about the Champ or the Chicken Club, but I'm a fan of making my own creations because this venue is the epitome of making a sandwich an expression of yourself. My old go-to was Ham Capicola, Salami, Pepperoni, Fresh Mozzarella, and the Works. My new go-to is Turkey, Roasted Peppers, and the Works. If I remember correctly, the Works is supposed to consist of lettuce, tomato, onion, salt, pepper, oil, and vinegar, but the ratio of each ingredient that the sandwich crafter applies changes the flavor and the texture of your sandwich, Please, do not skip on the Works. Also, My Hero becomes very busy around noon, so much so, that they take the phone off the hook. read more

My Hero is, admittedly, very popular with locals. We've found that the best way to deal with them is to phone in an order in advance and pick it up. Today, we were on our way back from Suffolk County, so we phoned a half hour in advance and got a busy signal. More busy signals for the half hour it took to arrive, where people were l;ined well out the door. It was clear to us that they were so busy, they just left their phone off the hook. I wrote the above several years ago. Recently we went back and found that they are just fine if you make sure to go early on a weekday. To be blunt I ordered a salad & they gave me a sandwich. When I returned it I was literally yelled & laughed at by 3 employees who told me this is what I ordered. I can't stress this enough - you HAVE to go here if you're in the area. It's the best hero (sub, sandwich, hoagie... whatever you want to call it) I've ever had, hands down. This quality comes with a wait, though - no matter when you go there will be a line, often out the door. When you go know it's cash only, too. Enough seating, but not all too much - about 3 small tables when you walk in, two more in the back, and three picnic tables outside. You sit down after you get your food - no waiter service or anything like that. I'd say their most popular hero would be the Chicken Club (chicken cutlets, lettuce, tomato, mayo & bacon), but my personal favorite is a make-your-own (they do that too) chicken cutlet with fresh mozzarella and the works (thinly sliced onion, lettuce, tomato, salt, pepper, oregano, oil and vinegar). I think it's overrated. I've heard a lot of hype and good things from reviews and friends, but unfortunately our lunch last weekend fell short of satisfactory. The line was out the door when we got there (not to mention having to find street parking) so it added to the angst and anticipation. I went with the lauded chicken club and hubby chose the champ with the works. The sandwiches are HUGE so you get a lot of bang for your buck, but not a lot of flavor. We went halfsies and I just couldn't understand why people love this place. Both lacked flavor...and we were basically eating because we were hungry, not because we enjoyed it.
