While this spot is a bit off the tourist track, it is worth stopping by if you are in the area. Very busy during lunch time, even on weekdays, so you know this place is good! First Impressions- The restaurant itself is pretty quaint, with about 5-6 tables (I think), most of them being 2 tops. All of the staff were super friendly and welcoming, including the chefs. We ordered 2 ramen bowls and a deluxe bento box, everything was satisfying. Prices were slightly on the more expensive side, so unless you order a simpler meal, you're looking at about $15-$20/person for lunch. That being said, their portions are pretty big so you'll definitely be full and honestly, for a treat yourself type of meal, I think it's worth it. Or you can always share a dish! For bento box- fish was fresh, tempura perfectly crunchy, katsu had good flavor, and they give you lots of rice. In terms of ramen- obviously they don't claim to be a ramen restaurant so it's not your typical good ol' bowl of ramen. Eggs were towards the hard boiled side, broth was good but nothing to rave about, however noodles were perfectly al dente. First time trying the restaurant for dine in dinner. The interior is small, less than 10 tables and there is seating at the bar; the tables are kind of close together. Menus are QR but they also have laminated menus. They have soy sauce, reduced sodium soy sauce and tamari sauce. They were busy for a Friday night and so it was recommended to order all at once instead of ordering as we go, which is understandable. We order gluten free so our order was mostly fresh, raw rolls. Service was fast and the staff was very attentive and friendly. The fish was good. There were a couple of rolls where the rice was falling apart so the rolls broke before they reached our mouths; but it is a personal preference for more rice on a roll. We also ordered dessert, and oh golly, it was tasty. The Yuzu Panna Cotta was so creamy and the perfect texture. We will definitely go back and try some new rolls. read more

We traveled from Bellevue to eat at this restaurant in the search of finding a good Japanese place to take my mom who has moved to Bothell. This was not it, unfortunately. The good news is that the raw fish alone seemed very fresh and I would recommend that to people who eat here. Two of our dishes had hair on them which was confusing to us because our waitress had her hair in braids and the chef was bald. We had a chuckle over that! When we drew attention to the hair on the sushi, they replaced it with a new sushi roll. I had the Bento box which was a generous serving compared to other restaurant's bento boxes. My complaint is that there was some miscommunication about the salad. I thought I could order a small version of the crab Caesar salad instead of the house salad that came with it and a huge crab Caesar salad came to the table I was surprised but halfway through a tiny salad showed up and I figured out that I had purchased an extra salad. It turns out my daughter purchased this salad as well this was a situation where maybe it was nobody's fault but I would've appreciated the clarification from our waitress. Because the dinner comes with a salad why would someone order an additional salad with it? It doesn't hurt to clarify. Unfortunately the crab Caesar salad was beyond unimpressive. The dressing was light and watered own And the stuff shredded on the top did not seem like crab at all. Also the croutons did not taste like croutons they tasted like they had been kept in the freezer and had freezer burn but then were warmed up somehow so the texture when I bit down was like a fragile cube of sawdust that just melted in my mouth but had no flavor. We really should have returned the salads, they were horrible now they I think about it. Th crab didn't taste like crab either. I don't know why I ate as much of it as I did, it tasted like iceberg lettuce with nothing on it. I learned a lot of things here that I have no idea why it took me so long to learn. For example, at a strip mall restaurant how could a crab Caesar salad be done well? Also, if we were to want a really good complicated role, Japonessa or UMI sake House is a place to go. So I take responsibility for bad ordering. I will not take responsibility for the hairs in the food, however. I want to end on a positive... the Tempura was done well. I would give one star, but I'll give an extra for my bad ordering. But, it shouldn't be like that- the menu was large for a small place, I would suggest taking the items off that are not done well so whatever people order they enjoy. read more

I'm starting to think good sushi is easier to find than I might have suspected all these years. Even up in the northern suburbs, there are so many places I really, really like. Add Nakagawa to the list of places where you can order a meal that ranges from a casual lunch to a special-occasion feast. We just started ordering and ended up on the feast end of the spectrum. This isn't the most poetic or serene setting. It's in the middle of dozens of acres of strip malls straddling the intersection of two huge busy streets a few blocks from 405. But it's surprisingly quiet and peaceful once you make your way inside. They're working the curbside pickup, the outdoor dining, and the indoor dining--and the steady thrum of activity in the kitchen shows that they're working it correctly. They offer a bunch of menus for lunch, dinner, hot, and raw. We started with the geoduck appetizer, which was excellent. Lightly chewy, well-seasoned, served on a big curved white geoduck shell (cool!). The white mushrooms and iceberg lettuce weren't the most interesting things in the world but they added texture to the bite. Two of us ordered a variety of rolls, which came out together on a big butcher block. The soft shell crab tempura roll was very generous with the crab; the spicy hamachi roll had beautiful seasoning. All the rolls were perfectly prepared and presented--lots of color, super-tight shape. Tons of flavor. We had an omakase sashimi platter which disappeared in minutes (about 12-15 bites. We ordered a bunch of other sashimi which also came out on a big wooden butcher block. Their sashimi really stands out--thick, abundant slabs of fish with sparkling flavor. We kinda lose our minds at sushi places, and we also had a plate of uni and a plate of calamari. I don't know how you can make calamari any better than this; it had a thin layer of breading that added flavor and just a bit of crunch without covering the flavor of the squid. The squid was remarkably tender. The uni had a bright, slightly sweet oceanic brine to the flavor. Nice tight seaweed wrapper that added a hint of darker saltiness. The owner stopped by just as we finally convinced the kids (early 20s) to try it for the first time. She had quite the chuckle, talking about how her kids had gone through various phases of uni hesitancy as they were growing up. All 4 of us came to it later in life, and the kids are still in early/mid stage uni hesitancy, but they warmed to it at least in theory. Without intending it to be a crazy new-to-you food experiences night, it turned out that way. We finished with some yuzu panna cotta, which had incredible bright flavors and lovely thick creamy texture. It came out with ice-crunchy matcha ice cream, whipped cream, and strawberry slices. This is a gorgeous light dessert that avoids the super-heavy sweetness of many American desserts. By the time we were done, we had way over-ordered, so I won't go into pricing. Their prices are right on the money for the quality they offer, and that says all that needs be said. I wish the service had been a little faster and more organized, but we never really lacked for anything at any point, so I won't quibble. We'll definitely be back. read more

There are lots of great sushi options in Seattle, which can make for a tough decision. Decided to try a new spot and was extremely pleased with the food and experience. Ordered a variety of appetizers, the Nakagawa House Roll, and a few different types of sashimi. Each item was tasty and delicious in their own way. In particular, I recommend their Crab Creamy Croquettes - perfectly crunchy exterior/ soft & flavorful interior. At this time, there was indoort and outdoor seating. Eating at an outdoor table, the staff was great about checking on regularly and giving us updates on the status of our orders. This is now my favorite sushi spot for the area and highly recommend it to anyone that can't decide on where to go for sushi. read more

Nobody likes change. I noticed the original Japanese head sushi chef is no longer there. Did he quit? Is he on vacation? We were a bit worried. After three visits, we both agreed the replacement measured up.. sigh of relief We enjoyed their good variety of seasonal chef specialty items on the white board. There's always several featured seasonal items. Here's what we tried: 1) Tempura halibut fish and chips: were a little on the fence with ordering fish and chips at a sushi joint. Super clean tempura batter with large flavorful chunks of fresh tasting halibut with nori crinkle fries that came with house made dill aioli. Impressed it definitely wasn't slapped together. Every component from batter to the attention to detail in the perfect crisp and flavoring of the fries and the condiments were executed to perfection. Glad we managed to squeezed this dish in.. 2) Raw pacific oysters on a half shell: large deep cup oysters dressed perfectly with a light tangy ponzu sauce which is better than oysters we have had at other high end places. The only difference is variety. If you like the small and medium size variety, they don't have it.. 3) Spain tuna toro sashimi or nigiri: mild, rich, melt in your mouth. Not sure how long they will feature this. Hope it's here to stay! You may not go back to regular ahi after trying this! Everything is good but our must have's on every visit is: 1) tempura veg and shrimp- light and never greasy and delightful textures : eggplant, acorn squash, broccoli, asparagus, taro root, sweet potato. My only wish is for the veg, instead of one piece each I wish there's two each so I am not having to fight over who gets what. We have to divide each veg in half to be fair. 2) Seaweed salad- fresh, bright and balanced in flavors. Not over vinegary like some places. Nice vegan dish! 3) Nigiri -here's our favorites: A) Hotate-scallop-super mild, fresh fat pillows of creamy goodness. Our personal favorite so we double the order B) Spain tuna belly-rich and fatty yet delicate melt in your mouth feel C) Ama-ebi or sweet shrimp: raw sushi grade shrimp is delicate- comes with fried shrimp heads D) Atlantic salmon: classic must have. Note the thick slices on the pic. Fatty compared to wild. Miso soup: some days it's extra good when it's extra hot! One critique is wish they serve better green tea than the cheap green tea bags they are bland like drinking hot water. Not a deal breaker. Delicious, fair price, pandemic friendly for dine in and take out. We need to do our part to keep them in biz. read more

Our new go to place for sushi! We haven't been really impressed with any of the sushi places around Kirkland. Very glad that we found this hole in the wall! It was busy for a small setup for a Sunday evening. We waited just a bit for one of the few tables for dine-in. Even with constant takeout orders and other dine-in patrons our food came out pretty quickly. We had the tempura shrimp and veggies as an appetizer and two rolls which was a good amount of food for me and my husband. Both the Rainbow and PNW roll were good but I'm a suckered for seared salmon so I give the edge to the PNW roll. read more

I have to admit that I've only had sushi a handful of times in my 30+ years of life. Recently I've found myself having sushi cravings so I went on a hunt for the best local sushi. I was directed to this restaurant and wasn't disappointed. The online ordering process was a breeze for to-go food! I got a variety of dishes for myself and my non-sushi loving husband. He got the Katsu Don which he really enjoyed. It was a fried breaded pork & egg with salad and rice. It was steaming hot when it came home and he was impressed by the portion and flavors. I also got us garlic edamame and pan fried gyoza. Those were good but the least exciting parts of the meal. Sushi wise I got California Roll (8pc), Sunrise Roll (8pc), Spider Roll (5pc), and Maguro sushi. All of the sushi was super fresh and tasty. I got the Maguro seared for an additional $0.50. This was because I don't have much sushi experience and thought that was a safer option for me in case I didn't like the raw fish taste. Based on my enjoyment of the sunrise roll though I feel confident I wouldn't have to do searing next time though I did enjoy the seared Maguro sushi. The COVID pick-up precautions were on point and I appreciated that they bagged everything hot together and everything cold in a different bag. It seems simple but after months of take-out you come to appreciate these small attentions to detail. I saved a couple of the sushi rolls for leftovers the next day and they were just as tasty then. We ordered takeout from Nakagawa and it was tasty. The sushi and sashimi was well prepared and delicious. The rolls were a nice size and full of flavor. We did order a couple of bento boxes and even though everything was there, I think this is one of those food items that's really nice inside a restaurant, but doesn't appeal much in takeout form. I would try their bento boxes again when dining inside, but for takeout I think we'll stick to the sushi and sashimi, which were good sized, traveled well, and were delicious. read more

What a hidden gem! You are warmly greeted as you arrive and exit. It's small and very casual with a sushi bar where you can watch the chef make your meal. The sushi is the star here with a large traditional menu and for the less adventurous they have great rolls like California and tempura. Bothell has quite a few really good sushi joints. Nakagawa has been an institution here for a long time. The original family sold the business to a new owner last year, with their son staying on to provide continuity. Like some other locals, I was concerned that this would have a negative impact but as it turns out... I actually think the place has gotten even better! I always thought of Nakagawa as the place where the basics were done right: The best miso in down, the sashimi so fresh you don't want to put anything on it that might spoil the experience. That is still 100% true... The sashimi last night was unbelievably fresh and tender, and the pieces were decently sized. We also had the Cloud 9 roll, the Nakagawa house roll and the Rainbow roll, all of which were fantastic. I wish I had taken pictures as they looked as good as they tasted but alas... They didn't last long enough for a photo. But it doesn't end there. We also tried a couple of the specials and they were out of this world. For our appetizer we had the firefly squid. They are so delicately flavored, and the accompanying mustard-ish sauce pairs very well. For "desert" we had the tempura-fried brie cheese, which came out just perfectly melty. Finally, the service was top notch. Our server was friendly, professional and always on top of things. If you're into really good sushi, Nakagawa is definitely worth a visit. read more

Service: wait to be seated, order at the table, you will be watered, request a box and box your own leftovers, check will be brought to you. Wasabi is potent! Use sparingly to taste. Miso Soup: slightly watery texture but is still flavorful and not overly salty. Generous tofu cubes and a hunk of seaweed. Scooped out of a soup crock pot near the back. Seattle Roll: generous salmon to rice ratio. This roll is packin' compared to some places that give you "rice rolls". I like the crunch that the cucumber adds. Sunset Roll: so much salmon! I love salmon and this roll was great! Avocado adds a nice smooth touch. Philadelphia Roll: great filling ratios! Salmon isn't overpowered by the cream cheese. A very good Japanese restaurant. Excellent service with well crafted sushi and sashimi offerings. We had their special dinner that included uni a nice nigiri and maguro pieces as well as pork cutlet katsu. I ordered the Tekka Don. We rounded out the order with agadashi tofu, salmon sashimi platter and avocado rolls. At the end we had mochi ice cream (green tea, strawberry and mango) and Yuzu panna cotta. All very tasty. UPDATE: even though Yelp/their website states that they take reservations, the reality is that they do not. Just spent 10 minutes having a challengjng conversation with the owner on the phone re: the fact that they don't allow reservations between 6-8 pm (which is the time period most people come to eat there). Ridiculous. I then asked if it was okay for 3/4 of our party to arrive at 5:30-6 and still be seated (my husband is driving from Bellevue in rush hour traffic), and was told "no." I then politely suggested that they consider changing their online information re: reservations (which apparently do not exist here), and she said they aren't interested in doing that "because we're a small restaurant." Not sure how I feel about this place, now... the bloom is off. The perfect neighborhood Japanese restaurant - appears to be owned and operated by Nihonjin. Service was warm and attentive; prices are very reasonable (especially as compared to peer restaurants in the region - e.g., Seattle neighborhood haunts like Kisaku). The menu is varied: lots of izakaya-type small plates for sharing, a wide variety of entrees, solid sushi options, and a nice selection of in-house seasonal fusion desserts (Yuzu panna cotta, matcha creme brûlée, imo sundae, etc.). The karaage was some of the best that I have had in this area, hands down. The location is very convenient, too - right off of the 405 exit to downtown Bothell, with plenty of parking. It's in a strip mall, but it doesn't feel that way once you're inside the restaurant itself. Just a lovely experience all the way - we'll definitely be back. read more

This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in the area. I tend towards traditional, which they are. And in general like regional cuisine cooked by people of that region, which it is. You can tell the quality of a Japanese sushi restaurant by their rice. Short grained and plump. Slight chew to it with just the right amount of moisture. Lightly vinegar-ed without overpowering their fish. Their simple rolls themselves are outstanding due to the quality of rice. Add to it fresh fish. I'm in sushi heaven. In addition to their sushi, I love that they have plenty of hot kitchen items. The classic katsus, curries, and fried mackerel. Plus street foods of takoyaki and croquette. Plus "yo-shoku" items on the weekends like hayashi and omuraisu. And ramen, too! The more I write the more I think they deserve all the accolades. Go try them out if you haven't! The only reason it's not a 4 star is due to these two facts: No crab options for sunomono salad.. in addition. The chef didnt want to improvise; which, would of been overlooked. However, a snare and frown was made to us; as if we are crazy or who does that. Albeit, many other sushi places we been had then option of crabs in a sunomono / seaweed salad or at least improvised.
